Reviewer's comments
"I personally love Karnak levels, but this one was a miss for me. Not only due to its excessive darkness (although truth be told, the central area from the original game did look good under a night sky, a few torches would have made this a perfect setting), but generally speaking I found this hard to like. From the start there was a tricky jump which took me a few tries and didn't quite feel like it was the proper way forward, and then there was an underwater maze with timed doors which had no indication whenever a door would open. The constant dying and reloading took its toll on me, and then the huge chamber where you have to work your way down to the bottom also seemed as though as I took a shortcut by sacrificing some health to drop to a lower platform. I guess this one just wasn't for me, sorry. 20 minutes, 2 secrets. 11/20" - Treeble (22-Nov-2020)
"This is definitely a step up from the previous level of Ruediger's that I played. Lara has returned to Karnak once again, but this time things have taken a darker turn, literally and metaphorically. I did find it a bit too dark at times, but not too bad. I liked how some of the colourfully illuminated rooms conveyed the dreamlike atmosphere. That timed door swim had me in fits, until I cottoned on to the logic. There are also three tulip keys to find. Worth a look if you like dark levels." - Ryan (06-Dec-2016)
"Here players can see how this author gets better creating levels. The architecture and texturization are pretty good, but not so the lighting, too dark for my old monitor. The tasks are entertaining and the enemies well placed, but I went crazy in the underwater passages with the timed doors. Good atmosphere, I missed a gun with some explosive ammo to deal with the skeletons. Definitely, a level worth to download and play." - Jose (21-Oct-2016)
"Ruediger was quite prolific for a while, and his review scores here show a definite upward trend, so it's too bad that he stopped building several years ago. This 30-minute adventure is fairly pedestrian but it's also entertaining, with a convoluted timed swim thrown in for good measure. One of the two wraiths seemed to be immune to the bird statues, so I shot at it until it left me alone. And the final boulder bounced harmlessly over me as I ran up the ramp toward it in total oblivion. Enemies are ninjas, crocs, scorpions and skeletons. The lighting is dark in places but you can generally see what's going on around you. Not at all a bad effort." - Phil (29-Sep-2016)
It seems that in this dream, the Temple of Karnak (at night) is darker and more difficult than the actual temple. Perhaps this level reveals Lara's subconscious mind and even her secret fears (eg. the boulders and the skeletons). Therefore, as a precaution, when Lara woke up, she decided to go to the temple of Karnak (the one in TR4) during the day. The two original music files give an ominous feeling, which goes well with the atmosphere of this level. The boulder traps and the timed swim (with a crocodile) are challenging and impressive (especially the one where Lara needs to dodge two boulders at once), the shotgun and the skeletons are very-well placed (especially with the chains that Lara needs to avoid in order to pick up the shotgun). Aside from crocodiles and skeletons, Lara will face ninjas as well. I have found three secrets. The main goal in this level is to obtain three red roses (two of them are called 'Load', and one of them is called a 'Hypostyle Key'). The translucent slopes are a mark of originality, and the blade trap stunned me. - Sakusha (09-Jul-2005)
"This starts out with Lara returning to Karnak in a dream but soon turns into a horrible nightmare. After a set of deadly boulders it turned into a nightmare for me too with an underwater maze that also goes up and down filled with crocs and timed doors and there was no way of figuring out that the doors were timed. I found myself just swimming around and dodging crocs for a while till I found it out. The rest of the level seemed pretty easy after that but did have more boulders spikes and lots of jumps as you search for three flowers needed to end the level. Nice lighting and effects plus three secrets to search for but that underwater maze was the pits!" - RaiderGirl (30-Oct-2003)
"A nice easy level which was enjoyable. A bit too dark at times and with the usual things to shoot. It was quite a good looking level overall. I liked the title and agree with another reviewer when he suggested the builder did not go off into a fantasy world just because it was a dream but kept it a clean Egypt level." - Sherry (11-Oct-2003)
"This level is a bit dark but Lara explores the Karnak Temple at night. You have to get 2 Red Roses. Some skills are needed but they also needed for a good adventure too. Right in the beginning you must jump deftly to the gap. I suffocated a few times until I found I have to swim behind the 2nd gate's small underwater maze for getting behind the timed doors. I loved the glassy sloping platforms they fit perfectly for this night adventure. Ninjas crocodiles skeletons and spirits try to stop Lara obtaining what she came for. And there are swinging chains rolling stones blades and spikes of course. I found 3 Secrets. The added sounds increase the mystery of the level. I like the textures as well. I recommend it to everybody" - Obig (27-Sep-2003)
"Karnak at night. I have to say I prefer it by daylight. This level is much too dark for my liking. The idea is interesting and some of the gameplay entertaining (the water maze may have you cursing for a while). It's not a long level but there is plenty packed into it. The enemies are just what you would expect from a Karnak level but collecting tulip keys is certainly a little different. I just hope next time Lara has a dream she has it in glorious Technicolor. 22.09.2003" - Jay (22-Sep-2003)
"A short easy straight forward game. Lots of dark and I mean dark as in total black places. Lara is stuck in a dream with ninjas and crocodiles boulder traps blades and one timed swim in the beginning that kept me busy for a while. She has to find three roses to unlock this nightmare and escape into the light." - G.Croft (17-Sep-2003)
"This starts indeed with very familiar surroundings the beginning of the original Karnak levels but by night. After opening the first door you are in for a surprise as some boulders will greet you. There are also some familiar enemies like ninja's crocs and scorpions. Getting all door open and also that timed door in an underwater maze while chased by a croc was not really my way of fun. The jumping on those translucent blocks is a different story; that was fun although Lara died quite a lot before I could figure out how to proceed. At places it was rather dark a bit too dark for my taste. Getting 3 thistles is your goal and then Lara wakes up. 07-09-2003" - Gerty (10-Sep-2003)
"Another short but well-crafted effort from Ruediger and his best adventure to date. This is a fast-moving action packed little outing with plenty of challenge and quite a few gameplay surprises (I especially liked the use of two sets of rolling balls. This was a brilliant touch and rather tongue-in-cheek at the expense of the player; I was caught out the first time but really should have been prepared for it the second!). The level essentially consists of two set-piece scenario's: an underwater challenge (easy to solve in retrospect) and a 'how do I get down there?' room. Everything else was rather too simple but the level should be commended for studiously avoiding the 'it's a dream so all the textures can be really zany' approach which so many other adventures of this ilk seem to take. The only real disappointment was the finale; it seemed rather evident that the Author couldn't quite work out how to end it (or at least how to create the impression of Lara waking up). Overlook that and you'll have an enjoyable experience." - Orbit Dream (09-Sep-2003)
"I was expecting this to be dark but not that dark. Lara in the Karnak setting has to pass traps with spikes rolling balls timed doors and a find three thistles to finish the level. the maze with the timed doors was difficult the triggers after the first door were in front of a closed one so you have to immediately roll and swim to right direction. Needless to say that poor Lara drowned many times. Then it gets easier with transparent blocks you have to slide on and get down to grab the thistles. The three rooms have lava blade traps and rolling balls. The enemies are skeletons ninjas and I saw one or two scorpions somewhere. This isn't really my kind of level but try it." - Kristina (09-Sep-2003)
"A cute and short level of about 25 minutes with a few nice elements. This is of course another level where Lara finds herself in a dream but it's not really eclectic looking like a lot of the dream levels are this is a fairly standard one and is actually based on the original Karnak level from TR4 well at least a small outdoor section and you'll know it when you see it. The last half of this level has Lara searching easily for three tulip keys to open the end and each is found in booby trapped areas with a different enemy of choice the first half though has probably the best thing in the whole level a water maze with timed doors that are triggered open by swimming next to other doors and of course there are a few hungry little crocs thrown into the mix this is also the place to find a little something extra if you know what I mean but I can't tell you what it is because it's 'secret'. As this is only a small download it is well worth taking a look even if it is a little too short for us spoilt players." - Sash (08-Sep-2003)
"Entirely in Rüdiger's typical style: creative title sort of special atmosphere and only 25 minutes long but great fun to play through. You slide into a dark lava room make your way across and find yourself at the familiar entrance area to Karnak at night. The inside does look all different though and you get to explore three areas with red boulders and spikes an interesting underwater timed doors puzzle and very cool jumping on translucent sloped blocks where you then get to pick up three tulips before you reach the end and wake up. I missed the second of three secrets and thought it was just a bit too dark in places (granted that this is supposed to play at night) and the enemies seemed somehow a little oddly placed (scorpions crocodiles ninjas and skeletons and wraiths) but that aside this was good clean fun while it lasted." - Michael (08-Sep-2003)
"You can just hear old Ramses: 'This is not my beautiful Karnak! This is not my beautiful tomb!' Starts off with a dramatic slide into a lava filled room. Then you go to the familiar entrance to the Karnak level. From there all similarities vanish. There are some challenges here. In a gorgeous blue and rose colored room you have to navigate a tough underwater maze. That's hard enough but you are chased by an alligator and never get the chance to get even with the thing. I consider that malicious gameplay and it soured me on the level. The next big room has a significant and visually very appealing jump challenge. Once down you do get to waste some gators and then face a rather nasty blade trap room. I felt the ending was disappointing - no emotional pay off whatsoever. Visually an Egypt level that stands out as appealing and lush." - Duncan (08-Sep-2003)
