Reviewer's comments
"A fairly simple and straight forward raid using TR1 textures. Gameplay relies mostly on finding buttons and keys to proceed, but the level design gets a bit ambitious now and then by allowing you many side paths, although ultimately there's only one logical order to follow. The end of the world was easily reached in a room where the sand had taken over the temples, and I think the leopards clashed with the setting. The ending was also rather abrupt. Not an award winner by any means, but it kept me engaged even if only because of the nostalgic value of TR1 Khamoon visuals. 45 minutes, 3 secrets. 03/21" - Treeble (07-Mar-2021)
"another two part adventure from Laralevelbauer that was more enjoyable to play. Built with the TR1 Egyptian textures , enemies are skeletons , mummies , and panthers. The level allows the player to explore some big areas even if there isn't necessarily something significant to do in each. For example in the 2nd level there is a building in an oasis that almost feels babylonian but i found nothing to do in it. For some players it may not be eventful enough. The texturing is mostly good ( the missing texture right at the beginning does not really count ) , and if there isn't enough places with contrast for the lighting , Lara appears in 3D in many of them. The game was quite pleasant , in the first level i particularly like the high room where the shotgun is found, in the second the outside area with greenery was nice. A few different objects were noticed. Easy 45 minutes adventure i do not regret playing." - eRIC (29-Oct-2019)
"Too high ratings for this TR1UB-type level where you only need to pull some switches and look for some keys (well, and shoot some leopards too). In fact, in the entire second level there are several huge areas to explore but the only task I did there was to pick up a key and return to the first level. The environments are very nice, and usually the rooms are very well textured, the best feature for me, but many times you'll only explore and explore with nothing to do. No many enemies to shoot, I missed an explosive gun to blast the skeletons near the end; found three easy secrets. Not a bad level but not so interesting as the ratings show." - Jose (22-May-2017)
"This was a fun level while it lasted, but I found it a little underdone. I liked those colourful TR1 Gold textures and the cat statues really spruced up various rooms. Also, for the most part, the gameplay flowed relatively smoothly. However, I felt it kind of ran out of steam towards the end with large expansive areas containing little to do. Overall, worth a look, but could have been better." - Ryan (17-Nov-2016)
This is a solid bit of entertainment, although I agree with the other reviewers that more use could have been made of the wide-open spaces provided for our exploration. I was mystified, for example, by the existence of a large building near the beginning of the second part, together with a linking underground passage leading to still another area, none of which gave the player anything at all to do. This minor quibble aside, I found this level to be a very enjoyable diversion. The stuck thread gave me all the clues I needed to progress, although I missed one of the four available secrets. Grand raiding in the old tradition. Recommended. - Phil (01-Jul-2005)
"In this two part Lara level adventure your main objective in these levels will be solving some puzzles pulling a few floor and jump-switches to open up the doors to find the correct keys to proceed further. Some of these keys are very well hidden in these rooms so keep a lookout and search everything. After which you finally arrive and reach the Holy Cat's Head which is your main mission in this TR adventure. During these levels you will have some underwater swimming to do and to find that very well hidden underwater door that had me swimming around for while before locating it. Your enemies are mummies bats skeletons & panthers most of which can easily be disposed off with your shotgun. On the whole this is a very well laid out level but if I might add some rooms could have had some extra objects in them to make them that little bit more interesting. Lighting and atmosphere was very good game-play - nothing to tedious here it's a very nice and straight-forward level to play and I enjoyed it." - Gill (11-Dec-2004)
"Very cute set of two levels that lasted a total of 50 minutes for me. It felt though that these levels were a little underdeveloped in the gaming area with levers and buttons being the extent of it all as well as 4 keys to find along the way. Had the author added some timed elements to some of the levers this would have given some of the level a kind of urgency but as it is it was all a little placid. I did however like the look of the garden area in the second level with the giant emerald cat statues and the inclusion of the leopards was cool but this doesn't make for an extremely exciting time alone. I found 3 of the 4 secrets and ended wondering what some of the buttons I pressed did." - Sash (11-Nov-2004)
"This is a very good 2-parts level. You must find the Holy Cat Head solve numerous puzzles and find Keys. One of them is very well hidden in the hole on the wall. There are only a few enemies: crocs bats panthers skeletons and mummies. There are 4 Secrets on the level but the game didn't count the 1st one: the Shotgun Ammo which is guarded by a panther. Your only weapon is the Shotgun but you can shoot the skeletons in the water with it. The textures are nice and various and the added sounds give plus to the gaming experience. I recommend this level to all of you. You can find a Hungarian walkthrough (as we don't have English version) savegames and pictures here: http://www.freeweb.hu/treditor/12/queen_of_the_cats.htm " - Obig (11-Jun-2004)
"What a wasted opportunity. 284 rooms built in those two parts of this level and yet you get only 45 minutes of net game time in them and in fact spend most of those with rather aimless running around wondering why you are here and there are areas which totally serve no purpose whatsoever giving this a feeling of a level that is not finished and that the author maybe actually got bored with it. Having said that - it's an easy enough not all that spectacular but enjoyable run with a few buttons and switches crocodiles bats scorpions and tigers and a fun skeleton chase at the end. The Holy Cat Head pickup was a nice touch and it is all fairly solidly built for your quest for a few keys so you may want to check it out for a bit of fun. Found two secrets." - Michael (30-May-2004)
"This is a straight forward classic tomb raider level. The goal is the Cat Mask seen in the opening flyby. You'll need to find a series of well placed keys to get you there. One key in particular is a very hard find. The author has great ideas and should be encouraged. I enjoyed this and look forward to more. It will be interesting to see this builder's work as it progresses. Lots of promise and ability here." - Bene (27-May-2004)
"A rather large and empty level and that is its main drawback. It has too much space for too little to do. The construction and texturing is competent but very familiar Egyptian. There are some clever bits and including a well-hidden door and a key pick-up that is nearly invisible. The second part has almost nothing to do except dodge many large and clumsy white cats. As I dislike shooting animals I was able to go in for the switch and the key without killing any cats or taking any damage. An easy tension-free level for those who need some relaxation." - Duncan (23-May-2004)
"This is a good level and it is not too hard to play. You can finish it very quickly. Unfortunately it is not clear how many secrets are there in this level. After some back- and forth tracking Lara discovers keys and switches. Your goal is to get the cat's head seen in the cut sequence at the beginning of the level. There are movable blocks. And my favourite enemies the skeletons appear in this level. I love to shoot them into the water where they run around for the rest of their undead life. I liked the setting in this level. Lara was never in danger because the shotgun is in her hands. In some rooms I found nothing. Next time the author should place more things for Lara in the level the rooms are big enough. Very easy level no problems at all." - Avmaster (23-May-2004)
"Oh those lovely rich TR1 Egypt textures - I love them. In fact this is a nice bright pleasant level altogether. Nothing too difficult but plenty to hold the interest. Enemies are skeletons scorpions mummies and snow leopards - I HATED shooting the snow leopards they're an endangered species damn it. Mind you so was Lara at the time. Make good use of your flares or you may very well miss one or two things. Your ultimate object is to find the head of the cat goddess and along the way you will require a key or two. A good basic enjoyable way to spend a little over an hour. I managed to miss one of the secrets mind you. " - Jay (01-May-2004)
"We know now that this author can build levels as this is looking pretty good. What is lacking are some puzzles and some more action and than this could be pretty darn good. I am a bit puzzled as in the second level I never used that push button or the lever as that would close off a part of where Lara needed to go. There is also one big NO in my book and that was the place where the Garden Key was hidden. How could I know... For the rest I had a good time even if the room were rather empty and some of them completely empty and I hated to shoot those beautiful snow tigers. Found 3 secrets. 22-04-2004" - Gerty (30-Apr-2004)
"I didn't like the original level 'Tomb of the Cats' and I can't say I am too thrilled about this one either. The two levels aren't the same they just have the exact same textures and overall atmosphere. It's quite a simple level with some keys to find blocks to push and enemies like tigers scorpions mummies and skeletons. Your goal is to find the cat's head and finish the level. The rooms are empty so that and the lack of gameplay made me not enjoy the game. If you liked the original level's atmosphere you'll probably like this one too." - Kristina (22-Apr-2004)
"Well there are two levels - easy to play and the textures look nice and enjoyable for sure. Usually I do not play Egypt levels but this one is familiar from TR1 and I am not missing levels of this kind." - Yoav (22-Apr-2004)
"Now here's a Level builder to watch out for. I predict that Laralevelbauer is destined for great things as this is a worthy follow-up to the very underrated 'Indian Mountains' (which I loved). The textures (courtesy of 'Goldcat') and lighting are quite beautifully applied (and that's overlooking the missing texture in the very first room!); the atmosphere isn't bad at all although the 'end of the world' was possible on occasion and there seem to be too many areas with no real purpose (the Garden though rather beautiful is too expansive for its own good); the enemies are not too plentiful until the very end (when they can be run away from) and the Gameplay is smooth flowing and often rather clever (particularly the key hidden in the small room). This is an absolutely perfect level to wallow in for an hour or so without getting yourself wound up. The craftsmanship is accomplished and although not as atmospheric as 'Indian Mountains' is nonetheless a fine achievement. I do indeed believe that Custom Level greatness lies not too far ahead!" - Orbit Dream (20-Apr-2004)
"I had the pleasure to beta test this small yet well-crafted adventure set in Egypt and even though I've not yet played the author's first level from this one I can judge that the author knows how to texture a level well add decent lighting great action and nice flow to it. He's also bothered to customize/add customized guns to his level what not many do and overall I can only congratulate him on a level well done. The 2 secrets I found were moderately difficult yet I missed 3 more according to the read-me. I can't say that this is flawless as there's an issue with the door of the pussy-cat cage (Lara could walk through it for some reason) I also could reach the end of the world bug nearby - even though it didn't hurt the gaming fun much and there's the horizon bug but that's not the authors fault really. Overall - an enjoyable 30 minute adventure well worth a try if you want a small adventure in middle of the big ones we're getting nowadays." - eTux (20-Apr-2004)
"Not a bad level. The object is to search for and obtain the holy cat head being careful of traps and enemies on the way. A fairly straightforward level quite simple you should be able to play it through without needing help it took me about 30 mins for both levels so it was pretty short. The traps aren't very challenging I think I only died once by underwater darts (it was a little bug the darts came out all in one instead of 1 at a time!). The enemies are just some skeletons a few mummies and a quite a few cats! The only extra weapon you get is a shotgun but it has been remade so it is quite fancy. About 3 or 4 keys to pick up on the way and not really many medis not that you need them it only took 1-2 shotgun bullets to finish the cats off and you could easily avoid the mummies and skeletons. There is some custom music from tr2. Also the backgrounds were refreshing it wasn't another tomb raider 4 Egyptian level it was mostly tr1's Egypt so it was good to take a trip down memory lane. So for anyone who wants a tr1 style Egypt level which is fairly straightforward and pretty easy then this is for you!" - Aims (20-Apr-2004)
