Reviewer's comments
"The builder’s second level does for Catacombs what his debut (Trapped) did for Tut1, namely add another standard variation on that particular theme to the existing pool— short, easy, and slight; none too painful, but also barely memorable. There are similarities between the two which serve to emphasise the areas in which the builder has made progress: the flyby at the start (albeit again singularly pointless and caressing the ceiling of the initial room) is no longer on repeat; the texturing and even the lighting have improved somewhat, although there’s still a long way to go towards a convincing and evocative atmosphere; the rooms, not as excessively large in the debut as they are in many other builder’s debuts to begin with, have been further reduced in size and reasonably furnished with props. It’s essentially enemies and a few traps that carry the burden of gameplay, and for the most part they do their job well enough.
On the other hand, there is an overload of weaponry this time around (useless Uzis; explosives; the shotgun should have sufficed), and audio cues are somewhat overused as well. The sole secret, again ‘hidden’ by a shadowbulb, is even easier this time around, despite the added distraction of a glaringly obvious rollingball trap. More concerning, the builder tries his hand at setting up booby traps (the two levers at the start) and denies the player a prize pickup this time around, with the game simply breaking off at an entirely arbitrary point. The finale, such as it is, involves a wraith you can’t get rid of because the apotropaic bird statue doesn’t work; oddly, the finish trigger is located a mere two tiles away from it in a dead-end alcove. This looks like a rather desparate move on the part of a builder who couldn’t find out why his setup didn’t work and chose to quickly draw the curtain, so as to avoid generating hard feelings on the part of the player, which having the wraith trail them for the prospective rest of level would have entailed. Alternatively, the builder could of course have had another look at the Manual, p. 90 (regarding the role of Animating10), or, everything else failing, he could have devised a different task to replace the one that wouldn’t pan out. This latter is something that many builders are loath to do (they’ve invested time and toil, and now it should all go to waste?). It requires a will to recognise and acknowledge what works and what doesn’t; and, not least, a sense of discipline (nooo! discipline! takes all the fun out of it!). Choose to view it as a lesson learned; or, if you insist on financial metaphors, cut your losses and don’t throw good money after bad." - Mulf (12-Feb-2022)
"Pretty linear level. No real puzzles aside from pulling some levers and finding a portal guardian. There are skeletons, a wraith and two mummies. Easy and short level for beginners." - alan (24-Jan-2018)
"Simple, straightforward Catacomb raiding. No real puzzles (in fact hardly any puzzles at all), a couple of easily avoided boulder traps, plenty of skeletons that are easily taken care of thanks to explosive ammo, and a fairly tight wraith chase. There's some nice uses of colours and although it doesn't present anything challenging to the experienced player, it might be a good starting block for beginners." - Ryan (14-Nov-2017)
"A very nice and well made Catacomb level. Pretty straightforward and with not much to do but to collect a Portal Guardian and using it to get through. Atmosphere and textures were well used. A 20 minute raid through a nice level." - Gonxii (15-Nov-2015)
"This short catacomb level is actually quite pleasant - not badly made and, for the 15 minutes it lasts, feels brisk and action packed (mainly with skeletons, but I rather enjoy shotgunning them into holes). Easy and linear, a nice little coffee break level for catacomb enthusiasts." - Jay (30-Sep-2015)
"Short level with a fast gameplay. Only a trap when choosing a lever to open the door as the only "puzzle". Excessive pickups I never used, even when in the first part there are a lot of skeletons to shoot with the shotgun, you can avoid them easily. Cameras don't exist, but they are really not necessary 'cause the level is pretty lineal and the doors are close of the levers. Correct musics and textures, there is an effort with the lighting too. Play it to take a short ride." - Jose (02-Jun-2015)
"A short Catacomb level , at about 10 minutes , with a fast pace , where the point has been put on the enemies , I did not found the shotgun so outsmarting the skeletons was fun, later on explosive weaponry can be found so mummies and more skeletons are not threat anymore. The level ends after a chase by an elemental. The rooms are not eye-candy but the setting is solidly made , the lighting can be bright or dark." - eRIC (16-Nov-2008)
"A quite nice little level despite the fact that it crashed every time you died. The texturing is average and the enemies are skeletons and mummies. The level is very linear and you always know where to go next. Without any real traps or puzzles I can't really recommend the level especially since it only last for five minutes (I thought the game had crashed). Oh and I found one secret (which is very good considering that it's me)." - Magnus (29-Jan-2004)
"...review comments unfortunately lost L...sorry...“ - Doug E "There is no loading screen so it is desktop heaven every time you die and that you do at least twice. Enemies are skeletons and later two mummies and a pesky wraith and a cross that won't work. Luckily you do have many pick ups so those medipacks will come in handy. 21-07-2003" - Gerty (05-Aug-2003)
"Catacombs of Wesarius is a standard catacombs-type level built using the Catacomb wad and texture set. It is a short (15 minutes total) linear level with few puzzles. Enemies are mostly skeletons with a couple of mummies and a wraith that will not die -- the author placed the wraith-destroying statue but apparently forgot either to place the Animating10 object or to trigger it. There was only one 'secret' but it doesn't register as a secret probably because the author triggered the secret sound. The atmosphere is mostly dark -- the author liked hiding things in the dark. Cameras were occasionally used but always without timing them." - Loren (27-Jun-2003)
"This level ended so abruptly that I re-loaded a couple more times just to make sure. There was no load screen. The ice elemental wouldn't die. I encountered a confused skeleton. The boulder traps were quite ineffective. There was an infuriatingly unfair booby-trapped lever and the fly-by at the start was totally pointless. But never mind because the textures were decently applied; the lighting was well-handled and the whole thing was quick and pretty easy." - Orbit Dream (01-Dec-2002)
"Levelbuilders of the world do you want to endear yourself to the ever critical reviewer?! Why not create a level with a trial and error lever pushing some mean spiked boulder traps and a wraith you can't get rid off. It's all been done before I hear you cry. Yes but to put the icing on the cake you have to release the level without a loading screen. Not Amused!" - Dimpfelmoser (13-Aug-2002)
"Another level that gives the impression of great things to come but ends a little short of the mark, I gave it an 8 in the enemies/objects/pickups rating not for the secrets as I found none and presume there wasn't but because the enemies were placed well and the pickups served a purpose and were also placed perfectly, the textures and lighting were also nice and well placed but it lacked many puzzles (really any puzzles) and was easy to maneuver through in quite a short period of time, actually when it ended I was so surprised that I thought I must have hit a wrong button and sent it back to desktop but I hadn't, still it was enjoyable while it lasted." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Second level by Ext and it is getting better but still rather short and linear at 15 minutes game time. A few skeletons mummies and rolling balls and a wraith which you can outrun at the end." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This is another of those annoying levels that drops you to the desktop every time that Lara dies. UNACCEPTABLE. For a 15 minute level due to these drop outs you can spend double that trying to get through. Gameplay was fairly linear with the end abruptly dropping you out for the last time a few steps passed the wraith statue (thankfully)." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"A standard catacomb level. Skeletons mummies and wraiths. I actually could not finish this level because of a crash that happened all the time I climbed up to the right of the cross. In the 10 minutes the level lasted for me there was a nice work in textures and simple lighting effects. I don't know if the level finishes there then due to the missing camera coordinates so every time I died I was back to the desktop." - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"This could be the start of a really good level - it just needs more puzzles and needs to be longer than ten minutes. It was actually fun to play while it lasted and has you running from skeletons quite often and finding and placing the two parts of the hathor effigy. There are a few burning tiles fake switches and boulders to watch out for and if you die the game crashes back to the desktop which really annoys the holy snot outta me. At least there was one good thing about the level being short. I do recommend this for an exciting ten minutes of raiding though." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"...review comments unfortunately lost L...sorry...“ - Doug E (21-Jun-2002)
"Standard TR-Gameplay: lots of doors lots of levers. Every lever opens the next door! No searching required! Therefore the gameplay is very linear - you cannot go wrong or get stuck. Its a pity that the level is extremely buggy: Every time you die or try to reload you land on your desktop. A statue which is supposed to absorb the air(?) demon doesn't do so. And when you enter the alcove to the right of it the level ends.... Therefore this level was no fun to play - avoid it!" - LaraFan (21-Jun-2002)
"A standard catacomb level. The textures have the usual brownish but there is a problem with the monkey bars the texture applied isn't the best choice. I was expecting more enemies than just skeletons because of the pick ups many health packs and the revolver with so much ammo not to mention the crossbow and the arrows. Altough I think those medi packs where about right because I couldn't get rid of that demon. The cross-eagle didn't work it didn't want to extinguish my problem so I got through the rest of the level with that annoying ghost on my tail. Fortunately it was easy as the entire level is. I never got to use the crowbar I might have missed a secret there(?)! There is a room with many slopes which gives you the mechanical scarab but again I didn't see the use of it as the room which had the spike tiles was easy to pass all you need to do is avoid those dark textured tiles. A nice swim and a gem will lead you eventually to the end of it." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a small game but it is nice to play. The enemies are hard in beginning but a few minutes later you find what you need. The puzzles are very easy and I have played this game in only 15 minutes. The textures are good. This game is good when you play a long hard game and you want to have an easy time between. You find a lot of flares (I don't know why). When you want to play this game you have a short nice time." - Andi Croft (21-Jun-2002)
