Reviewer's comments
"It's easy to get a bit lost in this level even though it's short, but it gets easier once you know what to do next. There are some puzzles with movable angel statues, and there's also this classic hunt for the 4 candles, but something I liked about this one was that you were able to light them with the torch, something I don't think was done in previous levels (or maybe it did, but I don't remember very well)." - alan (30-Dec-2021)
"This is a short simple but sweet xmas level set around a castle area and its outside areas and you goal is to find 4 candles mainly, place them and then light them. They are quite easy to find but on your way you'll come across some pushable angel tasks, some traps to escape and avoid, a bit of platforming jumping climbing around and a lot of switches to pull. Its all very easy stuff here but with the lovely snowy atmosphere and nice music in the background it was quite fun to explore around here" - John (11-Dec-2021)
"Here's another lovely Xmas themed level. Lara's search for four candles is a rather simple one, mostly revolving around a few pushblock sequences and some switches that, for most of the time, blend into the walls. Nothing too taxing, although the maze-like sequence of levers and doors at the end was a bit "too much", as it were. Still, the environments are gorgeous and the background audio selection is a very soothing one. 30 minutes. 09/21" - Treeble (05-Sep-2021)
"This Advent level is better than this builder's 2003 effort, at least gameplay- wise. The tasks are more entertaining (I liked the pushable angels puzzles, as well as igniting a wreath to gain access to a key). The lighting and texturing is well handled and made the surroundings a pleasure to explore. There's unfortunately no secrets to find, which explains my 7 in the second category, but that should not be taken as an extreme piece of criticism. The pleasance of it all, along with the lovely music choices, should get you in the festive mood, regardless of the time of year." - Ryan (04-Sep-2017)
"A nice little 15 minute offering here that is a step upwards from the builder in terms of room design that is more colourful and varied this time (while there are still missing textures below raising blocks, boxy areas and very low walls). The gameplay is generally enjoyable with a lot of pushable puzzles of which some are more on the tedious side, while some are quite nicely designed. There are a few quite hard to find switches which is actually better than no gameplay at all. There are a few objects that nicely decorate the rooms (especially the angel statues), but there's not so much variety, not so special things are done with the objects and there are secrets to find either. The background sound is okay for the short time but it could potentially become annoying if the level was longer; textures and lighting are solid but not outstanding. All in all a decent effort that might be worth as a quick in-between level." - manarch2 (30-Dec-2015)
"Although veering toward the esoteric at times, particularly at the start (where it took me a long time to work out how to actually get things moving,gameplay-wise),the deeper into the level you go the more enjoyable it becomes;with some thoroughly nifty sequences which always raise a smile (the rising angels, and the lighting of the mistletoe, being especially praiseworthy).Once you remember that this author is very fond of well disguised crawlspaces(and levers which blend into the scenery)you make faster and faster progress (although the location of one of the candles eluded me completely until I'd consulted the walkthrough). The texturing and lighting is first-rate,although the open outside area comes perilously close to the end-of-the- world;while cameras are always helpful. The lack of enemies and secrets means that I can't score the second category too highly, but this doesn't reflect detrimentally in any way.You too may need the use of the walkthrough once or twice, but the playing area is pretty compact so it's easy to retrace steps. Fifty-five minutes of gentle and peaceful searching." - Orbit Dream (09-Dec-2014)
"I really enjoyed this level. The tasks are very simple and I liked them, the only thing I didn't like was the maze but that's just because I hate mazes! I'm surprised how old this level is now and it still looks pretty good. Recommended!" - misho98 (25-Dec-2011)
"Although a couple of years old, this is still a very nice Advent level to get the Christmas spirit going. The game play is fairly simple: Lara has to find four candles to complete the reef and so there is a bit of searching, block pushing, monkey swinging, jumping and swimming through a nicely laid out map. Nothing is hard or difficult but some things are well concealed so the player has to keep looking. The switch area towards the end was a little tedious, but straightforward enough to never get lost and no need to look in the walk-through. No enemies (of course) but Lara still got her weapons and she will need them to progress by shooting grates and locks. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful with the right soundtrack. The texturing looked convincing and well applied, just the lighting was a bit dull and flat in many areas, except where there was a fireplace or torches. This level is easy and definitely a good way to start the Advent season, there I enjoyed it very much." - Blue43 (01-Dec-2010)
"A peaceful level , not confusing at all , and with a minimum of backtracking so the map is good and well thought out. The tasks at hand are of the simple kind , but quite pleasant , you have to push some angel statues , make some gym to get up a series of slopes out of water , use a torch , an easy timed door , and I like the little underground area with all the doors. Good lighting , the texturing would have been better if all textures had been jointed together perfectly , but on the whole good work and I like these 'Castlesque' textures , also the ones underwater. Good objects used , and there is only one audio loop , a peaceful piece of harp playing. Enjoyable. [ 38 minutes ]" - eRIC (23-Dec-2009)
"This Christmas offering was much more enjoyable to me than Winston in Trouble. The tasks are much more straightforward, and the hour I spent here passed by much more quickly. It's altogether too dark, however, and I was obliged to bump up the gamma on my monitor so I could see and appreciate the eye-pleasing surroundings. It shouldn't have been necessary, but I guess builders are going to do what they're going to do regardless of public sentiment. There are a couple of timed runs, but nothing that even an inexperienced player couldn't handle. I skipped most of these 2005 Advent levels when they were released, probably because I was engrossed in the BtB competition that began shortly thereafter, but it's never too late to go back and enjoy these seasonal diversions. Recommended." - Phil (28-Sep-2008)
"This was a breath of fresh air. I loved the background music although it did get a little annoying as it was repetitious but it certainly added to the mood of the place. It was very christmas-y and I must admit I enjoyed it a lot. The level was nicely designed and the story was great. I thought the new objects added to the experience - I loved the angels appearing from the floor (I've never seen that object before). The only downside to this level was the part near the end with the maze of switches. I did get a little confusing and I'm sure Bagi could have come up with a better finale but the idea of placing the 4 candles in that ring was a great touch. A nice level if you fancy something different for a change." - Necro (18-Feb-2008)
"Playing custom levels with the Cristmas theme in the winter time is such a treat! This level makes no exception. The goal is to light 4 candles, the symbol of light and connection to spirit, your inner light, softness, relaxation, romance having hope, not giving up, keeping the candle burning ... And the atmosphere comes to complement this symbols. The contrast beween light and dark areas found in this level is very well mastered. The gameplay is not so hard so don't worry about getting stuck too often and just enjoy it." - dya1403 (15-Jan-2007)
"I like levels with continuous background music, and this Xmas melody was a great choice. Lots of pushy angel puzzles, and levers to find. The goal is to light the four candles. Very festive atmosphere, a masterpiece." - Akcy (21-Dec-2006)
"After being stuck on the very beginning on this level for ages, I finally played it again, and finished it. A very nice Christmas level with plenty of pleasant atmosphere that will get you in a Christmas mood. Plenty of custom objects, no enemies, difficulty just right. Reccomended when you want to play a beautiful Christmas level!" - Thorir (02-Jul-2006)
"This is one more peaceful Christmas level with a nice festive atmosphere but unfortunately too dark in some areas. Lara is searching for four candles and keys in order to complete the level. Don't expect any enemies, naturally, but do expect some unusual objects that can be pushed and are part of puzzles. One trap isn't that dangerous if you use it, sort of speak, after you have completed the task with the angels in the room with the boulders. It's a nice level suitable for kids." - Kristina (05-Mar-2006)
"The author gifted us a little bit dark, but wondeful level. The evening has come, Lara has to find 4 Candles and light them using a bough in order to gain access to the presents. Meanwhile there are challenges to complete, of course: pushing wonderful angel statues, completing some timed runs, and we also need the Revolver and the Laser Sight for precise shots. There are no enemies on the level, and no medipacks are needed. The textures are various and really beautiful, and the added sounds also raised the feeling. This is a real Christmas-adventure. Merry Christmas to you too, BaGi! :) You can find a Hungarian walkthrough (as we don't have English version), savegames and pictures here: http://treditor.hu/16/candlelight.htm" - Obig (25-Jan-2006)
"As the name infers your quest is to find 4 candles and light them. On your journey you come across many transparent angels that need to be pushed onto their rightful places. None of this is too hard, although I have to admit to overlooking a wall lever near the start so was running around lost trying to see if anything and everything was pushable to help advance me, again I over thought things. I never found any secrets in this lovely snowy xmas level which was a little bit of a shame as xmas is all about finding presents, well okay it's not all about that there is the whole religion, Christ thing. This took me just over 30 minutes to finish." - Sash (07-Jan-2006)
"An attractive, if dark, level that requires a bit of thought and observation. The setting is compact, and the rooms and buildings nicely finished. Lara has to find (and light!) four candles to get to her presents. Not quite as easy as it sounds, but not that hard either. A gentle and pleasant addition to this series, and to TR as a whole. Recommended." - Duncan (02-Jan-2006)
"Here is a level with a very good design. Nice objects, well textured and beautiful music. The level is dark enough, but I only found a pack of flares near the end; this is not good, 'cause when you really need the flares is at the beginning to better explore all the no familiar places. In the room with the rolling balls, if you put the angel over the "death" tile you can't do that the blocks lower and you have to reload a savegame. After get the third candle you slide down a ramp; if you miss the ladder at half way, you can continue playing, but you'll need to go back to that ladder later taking a long detour or reload a savegame too. If the level wasn't so dark I'd like it more." - Jose (31-Dec-2005)
"Is there no end to this lady's talent! It amazing how BaGi creates completely 'new' levels each time. Even here, in this Christmas level, designed for children. So it's safe for them to play. And yet, at the same time, there's a fair amount of thinking to be done here, especially at the start. Once those well hidden crawlspaces and switches are finally found it becomes easier to find your way. Very atmospheric and although there are a lot of dark places, there is nothing sinister here. Lara has to find four candles, and the lasersight and revolver are used very well here. She also find a flowering twig (mistletoe!) to light and set fire to things. I was slightly confused when I made it in the mansion and was able to set fire to the four corners of the wreath 'before' I placed the candles. But that's nitpicking, so we'll leave that there. I was really impressed in the dark church like room with the beautiful transparent angle statues, and the criss-cross fires in the crawlspace. There are a lot of statues to push in different rooms, and the angle cutscenes were a lovely surprise. The level is very beautiful, but a little too dark in my opinion. Another excellent level. Thank you BaGi." - CC (23-Dec-2005)
"Nice Christmas level. Beautiful music and atmosphere, only few puzzles and pickups (candles, keys, one medipack and some ammo). Lara has to find the way to get her gifts and this is not easy, I was stuck in the water and missed one open door because the darkness of some rooms. Beautiful and entertaining level." - Loupar (17-Dec-2005)
"Getting really in the Xmas spirit with the advent levels and I could get use to not shooting enemies LOL. This is a level you have to think a bit as it isn't that clear cut in my opinion anyway. Get used to figure out what to pick up as a torch isn't a torch as such. You are in search of four candles and when you light them you accomplished your task. Still not sure why Barbara put in that hellish tile, but I can see that too curious people can be a in trouble if you didn't save before that. 03-12-2005" - Gerty (15-Dec-2005)
"I did get off to a slow start in this level because I overlooked some sneaky exits and crawlspaces, but once you get started t flows really nice and easily with some excellent use of objects, very nice textures, lighting and suitably chosen music. The pushing of the angels was nice but got a little tedious after a while. Camera work is excellent and helps the smooth progression. Very nice to use a mistletoe as a torch replacment, although it looks kind of funny when you first light the candles (as you do not actually need to place them to do that). Very festive, very fun - recommnded for the season." - MichaelP (14-Dec-2005)
"It's snowing, hurrah. This is a charming level, gorgeous to look at, fun to play as you search for four advent candles and, although I usually find looped audio tracks induce the red killing mist, this particular choice of music was so lovely that I really didn't mind a bit. There are puzzles to solve, which aren't difficult but are entertaining and a really nice theme of angels running throughout. Another level to get you in the right frame of mind for Christmas." - Jay (13-Dec-2005)
"Wow! I'm not a huge fan of snowy levels but who can resist them when you get some x-mas spirit at the same time? :=) This is a gem when it comes to this kind of levels and the best one I have ever played. The difficulty is normal and invloves a lot of thinking. Great objects and puzzles. The atmosphere is the best I have ever seen in a x-mas level. Just the music hmmm. I urge anyone who likes december, snow and great atmosphere to play this and get some x-mas spirit NOW! :)" - QRS (11-Dec-2005)
"In this lovely game is Lara searching for four candles to free the angels. Very lovely environment with very well placed textures and very well made architecture, enriched with lovely music, uniting and then separating flames (beautiful game effect), stairs up into the church, which wasn't the church but a lovely, warm room, was breath taking. Also a little town is lovely, sometimes maybe little bit too dark, specially the maze with switches. Rooms with angels are in warm atmosphere, surrounded with corners, filled with fog and flowers. Puzzles are very well done, not just to solve but also to admire. One multiple jump, where you climb out of water, and timed run are easy to master, so game is suitable also for beginners. I didn't rush through the game, so different background music in different places would be much appreciated. In the end you are welcomed in beautiful room, decorated with christmas tree, presents and gifts, to enjoy peaceful, lovely and merry Christmas. I enjoyed playing very much and I'm looking forward to play the next game, made by BaGi and thank you for building." - Oxy (10-Dec-2005)
