Reviewer's comments
"As soon as I started playing this game, I lost my motivation in continuing it... There were loads of frustrating errors which had destroyed the gameplay itself! There were tons of untextured polygons, the gameplay was pretty pointless in general, misuse of pickups, bad lighting, etc. These problems mentioned were somehow a pain in the neck due to the fact that it made your motivation to go away abruptly, which means you are about to put the controller device down as soon as possible. I wish the builder of this level could have put more effort on his debut. Thank you anyways!" - Mehrbod (21-Jan-2019)
"There's an effort to experiment with eclectic lighting and texture choices in this early level, but I can't say it works well in this level and it comes across that the effect was just tampered around with. Weird scenery aside, this doesn't offer a whole lot to fire the blood, with gameplay involving lever pushing, basic item quests and a bit of jumping around while being heckled by countless scorpions and ninjas. Can't really recommend this one." - Ryan (09-Dec-2017)
"Another short level without interest. Simple architecture, recharged textures and no puzzles to solve. Few enemies to shoot, few pickups, your goal here is to look for two eye pieces (very easy to get) to open the exit door. The author forgot to activate the “one shot” button in the flybys, so don't step too long on the trigger tile. The author simply follow the instructions from the manual to build her own tutorial level with some new rooms. Playable, but not entertaining." - Jose (09-Nov-2017)
"In this level you'll find some boxy rooms with repetitive textures but there is plenty of lighting used for some rooms. You'll also find some oasis before the last one. The most annoying part is when the flare bug appears. There are enemies, and many of them. Approximately 30 minutes of gameplay about finding puzzle items, kill enemies and do some tricky jumps." - alan (30-Aug-2017)
"Don't know about silent; the clash of colours and textures is enough to wake the dead. Also, the scenery has an alarming tendency to disappear towards the end of the thirty minutes the level lasts, which is disorientating to say the least. This is mainly an exercise in fighting off multiple enemies - ninjas, crocodiles and scorpions - otherwise it's pretty straightforward. There's some attempt to use interesting camera angles, which once or twice looked rather good, but otherwise it's a bit lacklustre." - Jay (17-Mar-2015)
"This is one of those old and straightforward levels which had somehow slipped under my radar;but, having finally played it,I can't say that I was missing much. It looks decidedly scrappy from a texturing point-of-view,and lighting was too overdone - vibrant,retina-hurting colours are not the most effective method of creating atmopshere.Nonetheless, there's something bracing about straightforward linear progression being hindered only by absolutely huge amounts of attacking enemies. In my case I managed to destroy them all without Lara losing her life (indeed, she actually survived the whole level without any reloading on my part being necessary),but it was certainly exciting in a good, old fashioned unpretentious way.Once in a while,it's good to experience that sort of level." - Orbit Dream (30-Dec-2009)
"In this Egypt level Lara runs through rooms with partly stretched textures, missing textures and vast amounts of crocodiles, Baddies and scorpions. Sometimes the textures are completely disappeared Silent Oasis? After Lara has marched through here, the level name fits. Then there is really calm, cemetery calm. One must find only the Pyramid Key and a Vrus. Actually, this level is built partly quite well. And, actually, it could give more pleasure, when the level builder would have worked more carefully. But, nevertheless, this constant fire in all directions nerves very much. And the mistakes with the textures nerves still more. And then the Flarebug may not be also absent of course. And at the level end one should run quite fast into the light, because a camera journey runs in endless loop. Result: Who has no problems with the texture mistakes and stands on shooting level, should access here" - Scottie (08-May-2009)
"This Silent Oasis must be a famous place loads of people come visit and in such droves that it ain't silent no more and perhaps all the crocodiles who thought here was a peaceful haven having all those humans shouting and thundering about made them start roaring too; so silent it isn't until you've done away with all living creatures including scorpions. This is really just a run through find things and place them level. I found three amulets which I presume were secrets. There's a lot of problems with this level but I can see there's been an attempt to try and make the most of it like some rooms are quite nice looking despite the obvious problems and I really liked the coloured lights and sky. The flare bug is here but what surprised me was Lara herself she's flat and dark but if she performs an action she becomes bright and 3d so for a fraction of a second this looks good. It's a pity this wasn't cleaned up and fixed but I guess now three years later that's not going to happen." - CC (26-Oct-2004)
"I don't know about an oasis but it certainly isn't silent. With all those ninjas ten at one area coming right at you and crocodiles plus scorpions it's rather deadly loud. Guardian keys two vraeus (anyone knows the plural of vraeus?) and Egyptian like rooms. The textures are missing at places and at the last rooms the walls disappear. Push a button place a puzzle item and you're done after a swim in a kind of maze but easy one and a slide-jump over fire." - Kristina (10-Dec-2002)
"This is a pretty poor attempt at a level. Whatever could go wrong here has and you will find floating butts the flare bug lots of missing textures and paper thin walls. I don't really know what the object here was but you end up with three amulets at the end. A couple of things impressed me though. When the red ninjas attack they attack in packs of five or more and there was a crocodile room with at least nine crocs running around in it which made for a bit of mayhem. The level only lasts 25 minutes and with some work this could be a great little level." - Torry (15-Nov-2002)
"This was a rather boring level for me. I don't like the textures from Tomb Of Seth and exactly that texture set was used here. There's no water so the author put the spider webs as water which was ugly. Room design also was poor I mean the whole room is very high but the ceiling near the door is very low just there and this is very ugly for me. Also the oasis made a very small appearance on the level. Well download it at your own risk!" - Treeble (07-Nov-2002)
"Well the oasis is silent now but when Lara was attacked a bunch of sword wielding assassins it was rather noisy. The two big battles and a fun slide with overhead camera angle were quite good but there are so many flaws here that it puts a serious damper on the gameplay. Here goes: floating butts stretched and missing textures no loadscreen illegal slopes paperthin walls missing animation enemies materializing out of thin air frequent blackouts in one room; not to mention the boxy rooms and the puzzle free course." - Dimpfelmoser (09-Sep-2002)
"Although not a difficult level there was just something really interesting about the look and feel of it. Texturally there are some wonderfully fun uses of colour and objects in the room designs above and under water and the great positioning of enemies for me gave the level a nice adrenalin pumping edge especially the large ninja ambushes that seemed to go on forever and I'm sure each time I killed one another would take its place. There are a couple of bugs a fly by that will recur over and over again if you don't move or if you walk back over the trigger and in one room the surroundings will flicker to black off and on when you move around but they didn't detract from this fun 40 minutes level." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Having only 38 rooms this level appears much bigger and will provide you with quite a bit of fun. There are a number of typical bugs such as enemies (scorpions ninjas crocodiles) appearing out of nowhere paper-thin walls very patchy texturing cobwebs used as water textures etc. but there are also some unique ideas such as the very cool top down camera views two fun battles with numerous ninjas the crocodile pit and I found the 3rd red Oasis like room at the end of the level quite impressive." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"Ok here we go again. As I replay some of the lesser reviewed levels I can't help but think that I'm glad I didn't review them originally. Having the benefit of hindsight and knowing the heights to which level building have gone since my rating now is quite different than it would have been at the time many of these levels were released. The case at hand is a short level completely linear and without puzzles and set in a patchwork quilt of textures. Enemies (ninjas scorpions crocs) come by the baker's dozen so it you like shooting things you'll enjoy that aspect of the level. Add to the above many thin walls missing textures rooms that black out and the flare bug. There are some rather interesting experiments in lighting and I did enjoy one long slide with overhead camera angle toward the end." - Tombaholic (21-Jun-2002)
"I really enjoyed this thirty minute level and found it to have a bit of everything. Each large room seems to have it's own look yet they seem to blend together smoothly. The design and texturing of some of the rooms were just amazing - the sandy oasis rooms with palm trees and the underwater areas being the most memorable. Also in some rooms the use of lighting made them even more spectacular without being too obvious. The puzzles were never hard but with the few ninja attacks and finding and placing a few objects it was very interesting. I completely passed the guardian key and had to retrace my steps to go back and search for it. Aside from the ninjas there are a few scorpions and some very well place crocs including a pit of them in one room - I didn't even bother killing them. There are a few lava rooms and a great slide down a long slope with pits that was just great because the camera view was from the ceiling. The only problem I had was a flyby that I got stuck in till I reloaded and just ran through and I saw a few butts but they didn't affect gameplay. I found three Horus Amulets and two of them showed up as secrets. Overall an easier level but one I really enjoyed playing." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Yuck another shoot them level and another butt level LOL sloppy though. Luckily there are some nice puzzles as well. This level is made a year ago and you see that in the thin textures enemies appearing out of thin air. Apart from the ninja battle it was not a bad level." - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"I was less than thrilled with Silent Oasis. I do not like to give poor reviews so I will be as specific as I can about what I did not like as well as mention what I did like. I admit to being "old school" TR; namely puzzles keep me happy and I am not exactly into shoot-em ups. Silent Oasis falls into the latter category for the most part. The texturing was questionable but the puzzles were interesting enough sometimes even creative. There were a few bugs (Lara's pelvis floating in mid-air; invisible objects that Lara bumped into on a ledge) and although the directions are in German it is simply a drop in build and play level. All in all an average level worth the play." - MichaelB (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a 35-minute level. This level is easy and the gameplay is for all players who like easy levels. There are many crocodiles ninjas and scorpions. The textures are fine but the atmosphere is not so good. The puzzles are not hard. I found 2 secrets and two weapons. It was easy to play but I had fun." - Andi Croft (21-Jun-2002)
