Reviewer's comments
"While I do think this was a step back from the author's previous level, especially regarding the visuals and atmosphere, I still had a lot of fun. If you are able to overlook the boring samey Catacombs style (which the author used efficiently, using and mixing a lot of different textures) you will see that the gameplay is surprisingly rich. It includes a few entertaining traps, satisfactory exploration, a well-designed box puzzle, and a ziggurat- like mound where the safe tiles are hinted with a green light. So the adventure never becomes boring or stagnant. Map design is also solid, with believable architecture, and the big room with the columns is quite an eye candy. The author also used the smart tactic to put grates at the walls in some rooms, so you are able to have a feel of the map, keep track of where you are, or where you have come from. I don't have anything really negative to say about this level." - Nomad (11-Dec-2023)
"This is a brilliant level in the Catacombs style and a bit of an underrated gem in my opinion. The gameplay is often fast moving, but with plenty of variety and some well executed puzzles and trap sequences, particularly the ascension up the pyramid near the end. The enemy attacks (particularly the intensely placed wraiths) also add much of a frisson to the proceedings. The only place I was stuck was when I overlooked a couple of trigger tiles before the pushable puzzle room, but otherwise everything is entertaining and achievable. The rooms are impressive and pleasingly textured and lit and you get to explore every bit of them. Definitely recommended." - Ryan (21-Nov-2018)
"This is a continuation of the builder's previous levels. It's set in the catacombs. There are several traps to avoid, easy puzzles to solve; skeletons, mummies, bats, scorpions and harpies to kill. Secrets are well hidden, I found 3. Puzzles have their respective clues and that's good. Cameras and sound are well placed. I liked that there's a variety of lights in each room. Recommended." - alan (02-May-2018)
"There's a lovely golden glow quality about this level; the rooms are richly textured and appealing. Gameplay is classic catacomb, with the usual skeletons, mummies, wraiths etc., all effectively used. Well devised puzzles and traps make for just over an hour of most enjoyable raiding. An oldie but a goodie and what a crying shame the builder hasn't made a level since." - Jay (09-Apr-2016)
"Worth to play this catacomb-type level with several easy puzzles and variety of tasks. In the room with 4 moveables if you move an object onto a wrong tile you'll have to reload. Well placed enemies and also enough guns and ammo; secrets are hidden but possible to find. Correct cameras and musics, there are variety of textures too. Not a jewel but well playable. Take a try." - Jose (23-Nov-2015)
"This is a gem of a Catacomb level from the Old School. No fancy objects or custom textures, just your standard stuff;but it's all beautifully put together with flair, and the occasional dramatic gesture.Rooms which become successively more grandiose and colourful as the level progresses;pesky yet entertaining enemies (that second wraith was excellently placed,as the 'race to the statuette' became a nerve-tearing thing);intelligent puzzles (the pushable object sequence was well clued and not too long-winded;while the climb up the booby-trapped stepped pyramid was good fun);interesting and occasionally surprising progression;plenty of exploration;some good trap sequences;and well lit and (generally) well textured environments.Progression is fluent and hard enough to keep you on your toes, but not so much that a reference to the Walkthrough is ever necessary. It's great traditional fun (especially now that the TRWest bugs are a thing of the past) and really ought to be rated considerably higher." - Orbit Dream (22-May-2015)
"This is an attractive Catacombs level that requires about an hour to play. However, the version I played had been incorrectly compiled (but I understand from Treeble that he may be able to fix the problem) so that most of the enemies and some of the hazards (spikes near the end) didn't appear. For some reason this phenomenon didn't affect skeletons, wraiths and mummies, so at least I was able to score a few kills along the way. eRIC has provided a comprehensive walkthrough that documents all enemies and hazards (so obviously he didn't experience the same situation I did). There's nothing particularly memorable here, but the lighting is good, the environs are pleasing to the eye, and the gameplay is varied and reasonably challenging. A nice, solid level. Recommended." - Phil (30-Mar-2015)
"The "Featured Level" feature has been giving older levels a chance ever since it was first implemented, and that's pretty much how the thought to play this one crossed my mind. Compiling wads with TRWest scripts seems like a distant memory and in this case pretty much a non-issue ever since all levels were only available in TR4 format on TRLE.net, so that part of the nostalgia trip was spared for me. As for the level - I'd say it has aged considerably well - namely, the parts that are clever in it would still be clever for a level in these days and the criticisms that were made at the time of its release would also still hold today. The texturing and lighting are competently done offering a number of nice-looking areas, even though some texture combinations are not as aesthetically pleasing and come off as somewhat haphazard. I got the feeling that the pack of enemies you encounter here was thrown in just because the author could add them, and not because all of them organically fit in (though to be fair - none, except for the dogs maybe, really feel out of place). The gameplay is the level's best aspect - always keeping you on your toes, with nice use of traps and simple, yet fun puzzles (ascending the pyramid, the 4 pushable object puzzle). With 30 minutes of net gaming it's not too long or too short, but with lots of stuff going on - the experience feels much richer in the end." - eTux (01-Oct-2011)
"Level is a course in catacomb blending research and very amusing crossing of obstacles to be played, The author to us to give quite a lot of traps to be avoided and quite a lot of all types of enemies who really does not pose problem with weapon provisions. The decoration of level is made well and the visit of places is appreciated. To cross a right time this level is very well. Congratulation to the author." - Daffy (24-Jul-2009)
"This level would have been on the Review Wishlist, had I played it at another point in time, at the time of this writing there were only 8 reviews for the level, mostly because it requires TRWest and somewhat specific knowledge to build the WAD (back when it was released, the smaller the files were, the better for us it was)... Anyway, enough chit-chat. What this level provides is a very simple (yet fun) catacombesque environment, with straightforward gameplay. Overall I enjoyed it quite a lot, but some of the textures felt awkardly out of place here, despite being well applied. There's also a mix of baddies, but enough ammo to dispose of all of them. 40 minutes, 1 secret. 08/07" - Treeble (07-Aug-2007)
"That was a nice surprise a typical catacombs level but interesting with simple and good puzzles. Lara is trying to find a knot a pillar a star a gem and the portal guardian to reach the final room and end the level. The traps are all over spikes spike balls and fires. The skeletons harpies and mummies are of no threat once you get the crossbow and revolver. I liked the room with the three levels structure and the one with the monkey bars. It's really a fun level to play and one of the many down rated. Play it you won't regret it." - Kristina (05-Aug-2003)
"Another of the gems I spotted. A shame that the author made us use TRWest and I did try but halfway through I was asked where Angkor WAD was so I left it. That only meant 'butts' flying around and hardly any enemies. I only encountered skeletons and mummies. But finding the crossbow they were no match. Had also problems with the only wraith I encountered and it took quite a while to get rid of that pesky thing. I had a jolly good time as this level had lots of different puzzles. Spike and boulder traps but they didn't hinder the gameplay at all. Will ask Mulf (he is ever so good in explaining) how to properly use the TRWest as I would like to try this the way it was intended. So I can't give it more for gameplay for the moment. 29-11-2002" - Gerty (01-Dec-2002)
"To experience this hour long level in its full beauty you do need a bit of technical skill as you have to create the custom WAD yourself from a TRWest Script. What you then dive into is a Catacomb style adventure with quite an army of enemies (mummies bats dogs scorpions skeletons harpies and wraiths) levers and buttons to push and a pillar a knot a gem a star the portal guardian and your prize - the amulet - to find. Traps are the usual suspects (rolling balls spikes darts) and as it is rather common in catacomb adventures you get a lot of windows giving glimpses of things to come. Towards the end there is an interesting puzzle with four movable objects and a nice camera hint on how to master the 'pyramid' with the deadly tiles. I found 2 secrets (what was that lasersight for?)." - Michael (19-Aug-2002)
"If this is just the entrance to Salomon's tomb then I hope Jean releases a level featuring the tomb itself as I've enjoyed the two levels he's released so far. This is a very professional looking level with nicely done textures music lighting and camera work plus a nice blend of enemies that include bats dogs skeletons elementals and a few harpies. The puzzles are never hard but there is a nice mix of them and it seems like every room has something to do. The well done spikes boulders and fire traps had me reloading a time or two and there were a few switches but thankfully this wasn't one of those 'find switch open door' levels. I found and used the gem golden star knot and pillar and left with my artifact - The Amulet of Horus." - RaiderGirl (25-Jul-2002)
"With some great quite creative puzzles especially the object pushing one and the one it led to the fire trap pyramid lovely interesting rooms and a solid hour of gameplay this level was really nicely put together. There are not many enemies along the way that were much threat apart from a certain ghost that for some reason gave me a lot of grief and just took quite a while to explode there are also 3 secrets well possibly more but that's all I found with some of them being very well hidden. Being the first level I have played that was constructed with TRWest I was not totally sure how to use the TRWest program so I played it without some of the intended objects which were replaced I assume by Lara's floating butts luckily this didn't really interfere with play as I finished it without any problems but I look forward to playing it again the way it was meant when I finally get a grip on the use of TRWest." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"I remember thinking this was quite a challenging level when I first played it a year ago. Other than remembering pretty much what to do I still think the gameplay is quite good for a short level with some interesting puzzles. It did lack any good skill sequences however. You'll need to use TRWest to make the proper WAD which I didn't do this time as I've gotten too lazy and expect custom WADs to be part of the download. There are some interesting rooms and the lighting is generally good but the textures are a bit patchwork. Otherwise the level has held up well and is still worth a look." - Tombaholic (21-Jun-2002)
"The game plays good in general but there aren't new ideas in the way to solve the level there aren't new textures there are a few bad textures. There aren't enough lights in rooms. The big room with three floors was beautiful. Combination of enemies from different wads was also a good idea but this makes some extra work for installing the game. Anyway I can recommend the game." - Juan Carlos (21-Jun-2002)
"It was good to see a catacomb level with not only skeletons and wraiths but also with a few bats dogs and harpies but you can only see them if you build the new catacomb wad with TRWest. One of the wraiths does not explode when Lara takes refuge behind the little bird statue so I saved the game while the wraith annoyed her and reloaded and eventually it exploded. The setting is less brilliant than in 'The Canyon' but it is good. The gameplay is always interesting for 1:05 hours and there are some good puzzles especially at the end with objects to push on different patterned tiles and a trapped pyramid to climb. A cleverly built and enjoyable level. I hardly see where is the link with the king Salomon. Not a difficult level found only one secret." - eRIC (21-Jun-2002)
