Reviewer's comments
"It’s another short Tut1 debut, but an unusually atmospheric, somewhat brooding one, and in this enhanced rather than hampered by the absence of audio cues and cameras, none of which are needed. Lighting doesn’t really come into it—the builder is rather too fond of his shadowbulbs and doesn’t even provide one measly flare pickup for balance—, it’s more due to the clean and competent texturing; the texture set used is from the Title level, but the builder avoids the usual mixing-up of ancient Egyptian and Islamic textures. The map suffers a bit from symmetry (the rooms where you pick up the Cartouche pieces look identical), has no ‘wow’ moment to offer (a network of passages connects rooms which aren’t impressive in themselves), and the inexplicable presence of ninjas is somewhat distracting. Gameplay consists in finding your way around the place collecting the usual items, and is spiced up by the occasional rollingball trap. Unfortunately the builder thought it was a good idea to include booby traps as well, in the form of two variations of the same ‘spiked lever’ pseudo-puzzle, which lowers the scores a bit. The mildly hilarious moment when you encounter a second Eye door and find the Eye pieces sitting on pedestals right next to it presumably wasn’t intended as such and may, like the belated crossbow stash, indicate plans that were originally more expansive but abandoned." - Mulf (30-Mar-2022)
"Here's another brief little Egyptian level that you should likely blitz through even if you don't intend to rush. It's not badly constructed (quite dark in a few places though), although the gameplay doesn't have anything involving or standout, aside from a few booby-trapped levers and a lot of boulder traps. Enemies are scarce, so you likely won't need all of the Uzi or Crossbow ammo that you accumulate, and it ends after around 15 minutes. Not bad, but quite forgettable." - Ryan (26-Jan-2018)
"Short and linear level, nicely textured. There are puzzle items to find, like stars and pieces of the Eye of Horus. The second door of Horus was unnecessary as the pieces were at each side of it. There are some levers that you must not pull or you'll be stabbed by spikes. You also have to avoid some traps besides the spikes like boulders and darts. I finished the level in 15 minutes and with a star in my inventory." - alan (17-Nov-2017)
"A classic Egyptian raid, but a rather brief one at 20 minutes. I ran out of flares long before I ran out of the need to use them, and as no extras are provided by the builder I manufactured my own. Which leads me to say - yes, it's too dark. But the game map seems to have been well thought out, and if you overlook the unmarked spike traps you should have a pretty good time here. You get tons of weaponry and ammunition near the end when it's no longer needed, but the enemies are rather few (ninjas and scorpions). Another time filler that can be easily managed in one sitting." - Phil (16-Aug-2016)
"Twenty minutes or so in a very traditional, well made Egyptian setting. Gameplay is easy and involves finding eye pieces and hands, most of which are just lying around for the taking and don't present any challenge. A few spike and boulder traps, with ninjas and scorpions to kill completes the action. Good level for a new player." - Jay (21-Jun-2015)
"This level is very well textured and lightened, but I missed a lot some packs of flares to explore the dark areas. The gameplay is fast and is based about avoiding traps and look for pieces to open doors (pull some switches too). There are two rooms with a couple of floor levers where one of them is a spike trap, but there's not a hint to know what's the wrong lever in both rooms (at least I couldn't find it). There are very few enemies, only white ninjas and red scorpions (are not there more kind of enemies in that wad?) and total absence of sounds or cameras. I found the crossbow and many ammo near the end, but it was unuseful for me 'cause there were no more enemies to shoot (???). At least the level has a good look..." - Jose (12-May-2015)
"A very nice wll done level where the main quest is to find two pieces for the eye of Horus, though this level was a bit average regarding gameplay, both eyes (pieces) were actually next to the other. Well, another thing is that you leave with the hand of Orion (I guess it was) as I couldn't find anywhere to place it. Atmosphere as well as lighting were Ok but a bit darker most of the times and at the second half of the level we can't use a flare because of the famous glitch. Took me about 40 minutes" - Gonxii (21-Oct-2013)
"A very early level but with few mistakes. As far as gameplay is concerned, which I believe is the most important aspect of any level, this was very good. You are basically trapped in a temple with twisting and winding corridors which can leave you a little disorientated if you lose track of where you are. As far as design it was nicely done and created the perfect atmosphere for this type of environment however I did notice a few flaws includeing the lack of use of the water texture and I also didn't like the trial and error in some of the switches (one killed you, the other opened a door but there was no clue as to which was which). The bottom line is this was an enjoyable level, not too difficult but enough to keep me entertained and the few errors in this level are not major and do not hinder the overal gaming experience. Give it a try if you have half an hour to spare." - Necro (23-Apr-2008)
"Who says you can't make a good tut level? Bartek has done a terrific job here and to think he did it way back in 2001 too just goes to shows you. Lighting textures and atmosphere are perfect. When finished I thought it was a very short level but while in it it didn't seem so. Some clever boulder dodging to do finding two sets of eyepieces and cartouche. I had a star when leaving but I didn't find anywhere to use it! I'd recommend saving a lot too as there are some nasty traps at levers. A good clever little level." - CC (09-Oct-2004)
"A nice level with good atmosphere and texturing (good to see the title.tga textures). Ninjas spiked balls traps darts emitters are what you will encounter here. There is also a couple of pull-the-RIGHT-switch-or-die puzzles (if we can call this puzzles). Yes sir it was twice the right switch and not the left. And you can find the crossbow when everyone is dead. It may be a crossbow of great value who knows?" - eRIC (01-Sep-2003)
"I don't normally read other people's reviews before I post but I did in this instance and Torry is surely describing a different level? There were no jumps here to speak of and no deadly end sequence either. Nevermind this is an efficient first effort. The textures are pretty good the traps are standard (and sometimes too sneaky) and the challenges straightforward (why place the puzzle pieces next to the very door they open?). Still this is a decent 25 minute adventure." - Orbit Dream (28-Oct-2002)
"A nicely done 1st effort but not too much action. Lara must find 2 hands and 2 Eyes of Horus to escape into the bright outdoors. Enemies are a few armed Ninjas that generally come at you from behind and a couple of scorpions. Mostly pulling levers to open the door right next to you and obtain the pickups you need but there are a couple of traps set for Lara spikes boulders. Funny but I can't remember picking up one medpack or weapon or ammo. 20 minutes for me." - Momster (08-Sep-2002)
"As a first and if I ever build a level I wish mine would be as good as this one. Although very linear you do cover a lot of miles running around this tomb to get twice the two pieces of the Eye of Horus and 2 (?) cartouches. I only found the BA cartouche and the door opened anyway. Found also two Hand of Sirius and finished with still one in the possession of Lara. Enemies you encounter are just a few a lost scorpion or two and some ninjas they either jump on Lara or sneakily shoot her in her back. For the rest you have to find levers to pull some swimming and climbing and even crawling. There are some nice traps and the pace is really fast so no boredom here. Still there are some grates I never entered might start all over to have a better look 16-07-2002" - Gerty (21-Jul-2002)
"Texturally this level is lovely with the use of muted blues and browns to give the place a very authentic feel and the dilapidated areas a gate that is already opened by a previous unknown explorer and the use of dark lighting all combined to give the level a wonderfully spooky atmosphere. Progression was quite straightforward but was never dull especially as the large amounts of booby traps spiked boulders and spikes keep you on your toes unfortunately it only took around 30 minutes to finish and the ending which never cut to black had me running around in the blocked off last 2 rooms making sure there was no where else to go." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Alright from a gameplay perspective this is nothing new and not overly exciting or difficult. You are on your way finding a few pick-ups placing a few items to open doors kill a few ninjas avoid darts and spiked balls. From lever to next lever and door to next door but still you have to see this level because the texturing and lighting is really worth looking at and sets a marvelous atmosphere for the 20 minutes it lasts." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a pretty good start for a level although I cannot see how my fellow reviewers took 20 to 30 minutes on this as I waltzed through it in 12 minutes including one secret. There were some good variations to the standard jumps here and I advise you to save your health packs because at one point you will need heaps." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"This was a short level that took me around 20 minutes to take Lara out of the tomb. Inside it she will have to beat simple puzzles. The texturization was the best of all I think but the lighting was very simple. Almost one year before this surely was a must have! If you like Egyptian style levels download it." - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"I suppose this is a first attempt after playing around on the tutorial level and to be honest this is quite well done! A nicely textured and lit level takes you to this Egyptian adventure where all is not quiet as it seems! Poison darts and deadly traps await the unwary (as Von Croy would say) but also those who are wary. As a matter of fact there are (almost) no warnings to tell you about dangerous passages nor to tell you which switch is lethal and which is the right one. A bit more atmosphere with cameras and music would have been a plus. Enemies come out of nowhere and right behind your back so be prepared to suffer a couple of bullets before you can draw your guns! Not many pickups but a bunch of key elements to open various doors to eventually see or should I say guess the outside daylight. Why not show us what seemed to be an outside scenery with a jeep?" - Jbc21 (21-Jun-2002)
"You'll find some classic Tomb Raiding here as Lara has broken into yet another underground tomb and your job is to guide her out. The treasure you're after is the Hand of Sirius but to escape you'll also need to find two halves of the cartouche and four eye pieces in this very realistic looking environment. Whoever buried this prize left it well guarded with some unexpected booby traps including both spikes and boulders poison darts and the rooms themselves as once you enter they try to trap you for all eternity. Apparently some ninjas have also broken in and are trying to retrieve the Hand of Sirius before you and will stop at nothing to do so even sneaking up behind you. Between them and the many dark passageways you'll be watching your back every second and deciding if you should carry a flare or your weapon. Although short at 22 minutes this is an interesting adventure - the author has done a great job with the tut1 wad." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Good level. I thought the sound effects would have really improved this offering. I love booby traps and there were some here. A cowardly ninja shot me in the back after emerging from under a sharply spiked ball. Is this why he screamed? Great textures - good effort." - Doug E (21-Jun-2002)
"Two hands a cartouche and two Eyes of Horus that's your puzzle items to collect in this level. Nevertheless it does have a nice atmosphere some dark spots though are very dark and even with flares you can't manage to see anything not that the flares are enough. It lasts less than twenty minutes and the few traps it has are not very original but well placed. The spike balls coming fast on Lara's head and the spikes if you push the wrong lever are some of them. Actually the others contain the same objects but they are slightly different. Doors are closing behind you while you enter a room and another way out after accomplishing what you came in for is available. The textures are taken from the title of TR4 the treasure room something we don't see a lot of. One scorpion and a couple of baddies isn't the ideal way to stop Lara but because of the length of it it's understandable. A quick look at it isn't going to hurt." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a typical Tut-level. I played 30 minutes for it. There are some enemies some eye-and cartouche-pieces and some lever. The textures are very good but the lightning is very dark (you don't find flares). But this level is nice to play" - Andi Croft (21-Jun-2002)
"Fast painless and easy. A twenty minutes tutorial exercise that doesn't come up with anything new or tricky. There are no jumps no puzzles the spiked boulders being the biggest health hazard here. If someone had given me a cent for every level of this kind I've played I would have now well let me make some fast calculations six cent I guess. Anything else you need to know? I suppose not. But you will be thrilled to learn that I played this while making a nice Pasta dish with onions mushrooms bacon garlic cream rosemary nutmeg and a lot of Parmesan cheese. And guess what was more exiting." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
