Reviewer's comments
"I rememeber the massive room with the menorah from the original which I had played long ago (almost twenty years ago, according to the date on my review) but that's about it. While the atmosphere is quite soothing and the place is nice to explore and roam about, and obviously the menorah is still a sight to behold, it gets tedious rather quickly with the constant pushblock bits. I'd wager we spent around 10-15 minutes watching that pushing animation alone, which is quite a lot, and sure they come in different shapes with two-layered pushblock puzzles, one that requires you to push each block into its proper slot, one that you need to stack blocks to sustain the floor above, and the main one which revolves around dragging urns to the top of the menorah which seems to take forever. Other than that it was all fair and like I said, it's pretty chill, a nice way to decompress after a long day at work (ie. any day of the week). 50 minutes, 4 secrets. 07/23" - Treeble (23-Jul-2023)
"After my rather negative and buggy experience with the original version of this level, I am happy to report that this revised version can be enjoyed from start to finish glitch-free. It follows the same format as the original level, with the aim still being to light the enormous Hanukkah Menorah in the main hall and to do so, there's quite a lot of pushable puzzles to do, plus a small waterskin puzzle and a torch lighting sequence. I did feel that the pushing was a little too overdone and the backtracking a tad too onerous, but that aside it was a fairly enjoyable experience in a wonderful looking setting." - Ryan (30-Dec-2017)
"The temple has undergone a ritual of error cleansing, so the progress is much clearer than since our last visit. It also seriously pumped up atmosphere by growing railings, textures and a new garden location, an architectural gem I would like to see many of. Though we're again short in worshippers other than Lara, the floral elements indicate somebody cares about them, and the fountain must have been turned on by someone, so I will once again decline Masha's request to rate life content with 0. Last bits of immersion are added with some new cameras, fitting tunes, eventually much more discreet and mood-sustaining background loops than the repeating and often disturbing melody from the original version. The storage room was a nice touch as well. The puzzles are as meaningful as before but their elements are arranged almost the same way, involving extensive pushing and a lot of running between temple wings. I also wished for better introduction and conclusion because once again the game starts with Lara having already entered the temple, and ends with a sudden pickup finish." - DJ Full (17-Feb-2016)
"This one differs in many things from the original level released in 2003. First of all it’s important to find the waterskin. A part of the 8 stars are elsewhere too, and the Hebrew letters play an important role. Except all the pushing, it’s a great level. There are no hard tasks in it, just the items are needed to be found. The order doesn’t matter. I can recommend this relaxing Christmas adventure to everyone. You can find a Hungarian walkthrough (as we don't have English version), savegames and pictures here: http://treditor.hu/trle/treditor/09/chanukka_revised.htm" - Obig (05-May-2012)
"A great level. It is full of great tasks you have to accomplish to get the eight Stars, and they are not easy, you have to watch out for hints and you have to know a bit Hebrew ... Atmosphere is wonderful and very warm. Long flybys were professional built. To spend an hour in this beautiful temple was a great fun for me. The hunt for the secrets was interesting, but not that hard. Recommended much!" - manarch2 (24-Dec-2010)
"This level although it’s a single one it’s very good and - what’s the most evident – it’s very big. I was really impressed by the size of this Jewish Temple. Also visually this custom stands on a high level. Lighting is very well done, and texturing isn’t bad either. In this game there wasn’t a single crack or a stretched texture. Gameplay is rather easy. It’s full of puzzles (mainly push-pull puzzles) and running around the temple. One thing annoyed me: at the end the player has to run four floors down and four floors up. Then he has to return… But mostly the level is pleasant and is enjoyable to play. Objects and textures were very detailed, what increased the fun of the game. Overall it’s a good level, with nice touches and I can rightfully say that it’s one of the best levels in this year’s Advent Calendar." - jawi (28-Feb-2010)
"I didn't play the original Chanukka level, so I can't say anything about the improvements. But still, this level is brilliant. The enviroment is great, the rooms are textured well, and the music in the background is also great. The weak point of this level is maybe the gameplay. There are many puzzles to solve, and they're really great, but after a while, I've got to the pushpull puzzle at the main structure, which was quite boring. Secrets are easy to find. But I must say that's one of the best levels in the 2009's Advent Calendar." - rtrger (16-Jan-2010)
"The visuals from the preview screenshots made me think this would be a great level. I wasnt dissapointed! A nice soothing level, but still pleanty here to keep your brain ticking away and make sure that your observations of the environment are nice and sharp. Took me around 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete. That included a fair bit of time just enjoying the skill employed in the texturing, lighting and objects used throughout. Truely relaxing and wonderful to play." - TheStig (15-Jan-2010)
"I don't believe I played the original version of this level, as everything here was new and fresh to me. It's a visual feast and much fun for the first 45 minutes or so. Toward the end, however, there was much too much pushing and pulling and running hither and yon. I suppose the immensity of that central room and the menorah structure it houses justifies a certain amount of tedium, but to me it felt a bit over the top. That's about the only wet blanket encountered in this stunningly beautiful level. Everything else was perfect for the season, and I can heartily recommend this level." - Phil (13-Jan-2010)
"Hard to believe that is has been 6 years since the release of the original level. The advantage we therefore have is twofold: Few will really remember a lot of details about the first level and masha has grown a lot as a builder since then, so what you get here is a great looking and well rounded adventure with nice audio, great texturing and lighting and a charming atmosphere overall. What I did remember from 2003, was the need for a lot of running and pushing objects and unfortunately that remains the only problem this hour long adventure still has today, as the exercise become obvious and thus repetitive quickly and some of the running from one side of the room to the other (up and down the many flights of stairs) is just a bit too much on the tedious side. Still, and especially in the season it is wonderful diversion that you do not want to miss." - MichaelP (06-Jan-2010)
"The Advent calendar was really diverse in 2009. There was debut levels of people with whom one would never have thought that they would build sometime something. There was short and long levels. There was a summer level and a little bit oddish level. And there was with Hanukkah revised a level which has a Jewish celebration on the subject.
With this level it was an advantage that one has exactly perused the Readme before, because otherwise one did not get on with two riddles. The riddles were very well all together, indeed, one Item was a little bit too much hidden. The level was wonderfully formed, as usual with a pro like masha, and very nicely textured. I have not played the original yet, hence, I cannot say which version is nicer. But after this miraculous Revised version the original far stands on top on my To do-list." - Scottie (02-Jan-2010)
"I enjoyed this level immensely. It was fairly much follow your nose, but for all that I got stuck a number of times and had to resort to the forum. My own stupidity notwithstanding, there was a lot to do in a fairly short time in this little adventure, and you can be running up and down stairs an alarming number of times if you don't have your wits about you. However, the atmosphere and lighting make this a very pleasurable experience and the sound track, though a little repetitive, is appropriate. All in all a very enjoyable level if you have an hour or so to fill." - sharnilal (26-Dec-2009)
"Masha has reworked this level , and this is quite a success , new rooms have been added , mainly the gardens are beautiful , I really like some of the objects like the little Mediterranean trees and many others. Also some of the tasks with the movable blocks with symbols are more ambitious , in fact the two puzzles which involve these are really clever and a joy to solve even if you know the solution. The looks are quite good and the ambient musics well chosen. A very well accomplished level." - eRIC (24-Dec-2009)
"It's been rather nice to revisit some of the Advent levels this year and this is another one I was more than happy to play again in its revamped version. It certainly is looking better than ever and the gameplay is somewhat more involved. It was good to have a comprehensive explanation of just what Hanukka is, included in the readme. Don't miss it." - Jay (22-Dec-2009)
"Now, here's a very, very nice level, superbly constructed, as all Masha's levels that I had the pleasure to play. Thanks a lot, girl! I didn't give a 10 for everything only because the music is non-stop and because that sequence of pushing/pulling the candles was a bit tiring for my Lara. (She needed a whole weekend in bed to recover.) But it's only a question of personal preference, of course. Raid on, Masha!" - Josey (21-Dec-2009)
"A revised level, and from what I remember, the appearance of the level has been greatly improved with more color, light, and gardens. Hanukkah is the Feast of Lights, and my [befuddled] memory is of unhappiness over the drabness of the original. We still have the same basic layout, with Lara traveling repeatedly up and down each side of a huge chamber, with the goal of placing "candles" and lighting a central giant menorah. I had trouble finding several stars because the author's readme stated that one room was only a memorial to objects from the original version. So when Lara found this room, I thought there was no reason to search it. Therefore Lara lacked water for the scales, and three easy stars couldn't be found. The game play mostly follows the original, so there is still a lot of pushing things. Lara moves lettered boxes into the correct order in two places, and drags boxes to stand on, and pushes "candles" endlessly, and pulls mirrors to place them to catch sunlight. Maybe all the work for Lara to place the "candles" is to remind us that Hanukkah lasts for eight days. Some helpful files are included on the meaning of Hanukkah. The revised and improved version is much appreciated." - dmdibl (21-Dec-2009)
"Although it's a revised level, it's still nice nice to play with some new rooms and puzzles. The look is very good, with nice and well applied textures, well builded objects, appropriate musics and a nice environment. From the other side, I waste a lot of time going up and down the stairs, and dragging/pushing a lot of moveables long distances. Like David, I was disoriented with the paragraph in the readme file where I read that one room was only a memorial to objects from the original version. So when I visited this room, I thought there was no reason to explore it. So, don't forget to explore this room if you're going to play. Still an enjoyable level." - Jose (21-Dec-2009)
"I never played the first version but its surely a very nice and charming christmas level coming from Masha this year. For the Nes Godol Haya Sham Puzzle I took some help from Wikipedia to figure out what the symbols (or rather letters) mean but Masha has made it easy by having inserted the right blocks in both slots already so the solution was close at hand. I am a great fan of custom music in TRLE games and always enjoy very much if one builder puts some effort into this rather underestimated criteria as to review guidelines instead of using the old TR4 audio files over and over again.Lighting and textures were very well executed , no moments of stumbling around in the darkness in this game. Pushing eight candles up into position , raising and lighten them was a bit overdone and only stretched the gameplay in the end. But again , same as last year , Joyeux Noel to you dear Masha and a Merry Xmas Time to all you TRLE Lovers out there!" - Ruben (21-Dec-2009)
