Reviewer's comments
"A short Catacomb level that contains no real stopping points and shouldn't stump you for too long, although it did take me a while to get out of the door maze. There's a nicely executed, albeit short and simple mirror room, but apart from that, everything progresses really smoothly, before the level crashes to the desktop at the end of the level." - Ryan (26-Jan-2018)
"In this level you don't have a lot to do than running from boulders, finding puzzle items (which is easy), running through a maze, moving a pillar, and a short 'puzzle' with a mirror that shows the safe and deadly tiles (also the key lock where the star has to be placed). There are some missing textures. In the big room that has to be filled, there's a texture of a mirrored face on the floor and it looked funny. I never used pistols as there's only one skeleton, bugs, and a wraith in the end. It crashes whenever you want to reload, or die, or end the level. I only found one piece of the portal guardian, and I didn't have to find the other piece, nor use it, as the level end was just behind the key lock." - alan (26-Nov-2017)
"Be warned, if you try to reload this game it will crash to the desktop. Shame really, because apart from that frustration I rather enjoyed it. It's a solidly built catacomb level that jogs along quite nicely, although there is quite a complex maze towards the end, which slowed me down somewhat. Enemies are few and far between - a skeleton who didn't seem bothered about chasing Lara anyway, some of those voracious beetles in the maze (aaargh) and a wraith at the end who absolutely refused to commit suicide on the owl statue, but could easily be ignored." - Jay (08-Jul-2015)
"I don't know if the missing textures in the starting room are intended, 'cause I didn't find more missing textures in all the level, but in that room there are a lot. In the ramp with two spiked balls it's difficult to grab the ladder once both balls are against it. The dark maze was very nasty, but hopefully Harry had posted a good map. The small mirror room was the best of the level and I found no sense for the last wraith, when you can simply slide to the last "crash". Try to not die or reload a savegame 'cause there is a problem with the engine or the script, and each time you do so, the game goes to the desktop." - Jose (18-May-2015)
"Probably an unfinished effort, as there are lots of mistakes right in the first room (broken landscapes with untextured surfaces and such). Eventually you also come to a maze where a skeleton will really annoy you as you look for buttons and levers to occasionally find the hathor effigy. Like Michael, I didn't use any of the four levers at all either, simply jumped down into the room. Anyway, I'm not quite sure the portal guardian had any use at all. At least, I'm not sure it opened the exit door simply because I think there was none at all. Texturewise it's not very diverse and lighting is also on the average side. Worst of all - no loading cam (and *cough*catacomb*cough*). 15 minutes. 02/07" - Treeble (19-Feb-2007)
"In this tomb you don't find items at every corner so be careful with your resources. You don't need much ammunition though as you won't meet the usual opponents such as crocodiles or scorpions. Nice maze (keep always on the right hand side to get through!) and a nice mirror room too. Unfortunately there are quite a lot of bugs damaging the fun: 1) There's one door where you have to put in two keys. If you put in just one the camera moves through the closed door and then starts to circle around wondering why Lara won't follow ;-). 2) There is one wall you can walk through without having pulled a lever enabling you to do so. 3) Lara can jump down into the great hall but there is no way to climb back up anywhere. You are expected to flood the hall but if you don't you're easily stuck. 4) If you jump (or fall) off a rising block you don't have a possibility to activate it a second time so you can't continue the game! 5) There is an invisible pole to slide down that was surely not intended. 6) Why does a ghost appear in the last room before the level exit? You can run to the cross to have him killed but it's much easier to walk through the level exit? A level with so many mistakes of which half at least are obvious in the first test run should not have been released yet. Sad but true." - Rüdiger (07-Nov-2003)
"This should be called tomb of bugs. The textures are awfully applied thin walls everywhere and a very dark maze with no flares not to mention the lack of the loading screen which made this level irritating. You are supposed to get a star and the portal guardian I found only the Ornate Handle and not the Hathor Effigy but you don't really need it as you can finish the level anyway. I might have missed something as two doors at the maze didn't open but I don't realy care his level is as buggy as hell and I advise you to stay away from it at least until it's fixed." - Kristina (05-Aug-2003)
"This solid catacomb level is indeed very buggy but some tings others mentioned are mostly their own fault - the boulder at the start which supposedly halts you from getting the knot has to be triggered in the middle of the slope instead of being climbed through the skeleton can be knocked down the edge from which you entered the area with a shotgun and the stubborn wraith actually gives up rather soon must've been a bug in the game. But still I can understand very well why others were so irritated as there's no load screen the maze ain't no fun either you can easily miss the golden star before dropping in the water (even if the crowbar before the maze hints you that there will be something to pry off a wall) and there's no real clue to where the pillar must be pushed. It becomes clear when the pillar becomes green and blue on the sides but was too enigmatic anyway. Well go for a challenge and try not to die when playing this if you're in for one..." - eTux (12-May-2003)
"I didn't have any problems locating both halves of the Portal Guardian but I do have to wonder why you need either one. All you have to do is run forward to end the level without ever using it. The level itself was pretty easy though the maze was a bit too large and if you jump down into the water without getting the Golden star first you'll have to start over or reload. I'm not sure about the pushable object puzzle right after the maze either. I pushed this pillar all over the place and all of a sudden the doorway opened without me ever knowing what I did. There's only one skeleton but make sure to grab the crossbow because he can be really annoying and watch out for boulders and beetles in the maze." - RaiderGirl (26-Jan-2003)
"A rather neat little level which if there were an award for 'Enemy which most pissed me off in a Custom Level' the Skeleton in the maze would most surely be the outright winner. He prevented me from collecting a vital Star and thus compelled me to re-play part of the level over again. There's plenty to do here and the game moves along at a decent pace although why it ended when it did (with part of a crucial piece still to be discovered) I don't know. Full marks to the mirror room also." - Orbit Dream (29-Nov-2002)
"There I was ready to place the portal Guardian (unlike Michael I found both pieces) when the ice elemental attacked. Dutyfully I kneeled down beside the bird statue but the daft elemental wouldn't explode and as I was crouching there seeing my health dwindeling away I noticed a nearby slope. Hey I said to myself maybe that leads to a bird statue that works. Strangely enough it lead straight to the finishing trigger. There are a few other highly irritating things. You can get stuck on a few occasions with the first boulder trap I found no other way than climb through the boulder there are heaps of textures missing in the first room the desktop death mentioned by everyone else and finally the confusing maze. Otherwise I enjoyed this well enough for the 20 minutes it lasted and the mirror room was indeed very nice." - Dimpfelmoser (12-Oct-2002)
"The name of this level definitely suited the first boulder puzzle I came across in this 30 minutes level as it took me ages to finally figure out what I was doing wrong unfortunately though with each death I was thrown to desktop so after the 10th time I started getting a little irritated. The rest of this level happily isn't as dangerous although it still had its moments but the puzzles were more interesting like the mirror room where you have to place something as well as collect something all unseen without the mirrors help and a terribly confusing maze full of buttons levers and doors that some how I managed to make through without really knowing if I was doing the right thing. All in all this will have you possibly scratching your head and reloading more than once but that will also give you a sense of achievement as you make your way to the end." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"This seems clearly an unfinished effort. It has a few of the standard bugs such as a missing loadscreen missing textures and a missing one-shot trigger with a flyby. And while it actually plays quite nicely for the 20 minutes it lasted for me I left the level with a slide without ever finding or needing the second part of the portal guardian without ever using the four levers (as you could jump in from the top of the elevator) and with quite a few unopened doors in the little maze. The mirror room and the spike ball room was fun though." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This level has some good points - the initial spike ball trap and good use of a mirror room. But outside of that there's not much here (unless you like dark mazes filled with scarab beetles). It also loses points for crashing every time Lara dies or you reload (no load screen?) which gets tiresome very quickly. Texturing is actually well done in the Catacomb style but there are too many broken textures and the lighting for the most part is dull and lifeless." - Tombaholic (21-Jun-2002)
"It was an OK level over all. It had many faults such as missing textures walls that you can walk right through horrendous lack of flare pickups and a lack of camera shots. In all it did have some rather cool effects; it used a mirror room with a neat little trap. It also had a nice little rising platform and a short maze. My biggest complaint about this level was its length; it was a very short level." - Scott (21-Jun-2002)
"Although I enjoyed playing this level there were a few things wrong with it. Like being thrown to the desktop every time Lara died and also when reloading. That is SOOOOO annoying. For the rest there are some nice boulder traps a mirror room and a very confusing maze with coloured buttons to push and doors to open. You don't need the four levers in that huge room as you could jump over or even walk through the wall where you will find the opening to the maze. Also a problem I had was climbing the wall after the first two boulders so stand back and do a run and jump. Some textures were missing and a loop in a flyby just walk some steps forward or else you will still be looking at that flyby. Apart from all the standard bugs for someone just learning how to work with the LE it was a nice level. Enemies I encountered some pesky beetles and a skeleton. 11-05-2002" - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
