Reviewer's comments
"Good, complete level. It might take a while to finish, but it's quite enjoyable. Action-packed, with some easy puzzles, a variety of traps... Everything to keep you entertained for an hour or so." - alan (05-Feb-2023)
"As the more recent reviewers have mentioned, it is actually possible to get through this level without the need to cheat...but probably only just. The majority of the sequences are indeed difficult to get the hang of and mainly involve very tricky trap sequences and acrobatics which require precise timing. This could reduce many players to jelly, but it's still possible to get through without cheating. The pushable puzzles are actually well thought out and the secrets and object placement have had real thought and effort put into them, although the Amulet of Horus was basically a souvenir. The atmosphere is good for its age and some of the scenery is impressive. Maybe a slight overuse of samey texturing, but not too bad. Probably good for the really (and I mean really) experienced raiders out there." - Ryan (08-Feb-2018)
"This is a long and difficult level with very challenging traps and jumps. In fact at the last trap with three boulders rolling to crush Lara, the track from the mechanical snake charmer at the TR4 Coastal Ruins area plays after the second boulder rolls and I thought the designer put the track just to get on the player's nerves. There is also a quite difficult area with sliding platforms and lava below, first the angled jumps are hard and second there is a very obscure shimmy crack. Seeing the ladder at the edge of the room I thought maybe there is an invisible crack, jumped and hit the wall and let it go. Then out of desperation I angle-jumped to the wall beside and she held on on there, that was very unfair to the player. I also didn't like the column pulling parts: the trial-errors and the solution relying on in my opinion a glitch in the game - if you push a box on a trigger and do not stop and keep pushing it, triggers do not work. Besides these issues the level is entertaining with diverse gameplay and nice architectures, and some traps are challenging in a good way. The secrets are very well hidden. Overall recommended if you are up for a challenge." - Nomad (20-Apr-2016)
"It's quite a shame that the builder has stopped building after two levels, since I've played both and they are quite inventive and strong given their age. The looks are somewhat less strong this time, with some very large outdoor sections that provide for some nice views but also suffer from wallpapered textures and flat lighting, followed by some much smaller scale and slightly drab indoor areas. The texturing is decent but not very impressive. But the gameplay in this level makes up for that with some quite novel pushable puzzles, very hard traps and jump sequences that will all test your skill and to some extent your brain. What I disliked were the rather obscurely or not at all marked ladders and surviving one of the traps is actually random because of the buggy boulder collision (which actually is an engine error, but affects the progression). The four secrets are extremely well hidden and pretty rewarding to say the least, while enemies and objects are used wisely but their usage is pretty ordinary. Could have needed some extra care but it's still a rather satisfying expert level which took me 45 minutes to complete." - manarch2 (22-Feb-2016)
"Well, as usual, I can't give an approved for a level I can't finish. In the small room with 4 falling boulders I was very lucky, and I was able to continue, but when sliding down the ramp into the corridor with the spikes and the falling boulder I've tried it for ages (dozens of times) and i was not able to survive so, for me it was not a playable level. It's a pain." - Jose (07-Feb-2016)
"This Japanese builder produced two levels about a decade ago and then dropped out of sight. Looking for Inheritance was his maiden effort, and it's a good one. Gameplay is quite complex, and the player is obliged to go back and replow explored territory after the crowbar is found fairly late in the game. It's pretty standard Egyptian fare, but when the environs are as lush and beautiful as they are here, you won't find me complaining at all. Moonpooka has provided a most helpful walkthrough, and since she's rarely seen these days it was nice to have something to remind me of her. There are a couple of brutal traps, both involving boulders in cramped quarters, that gave me fits, but for the most part the tasks are achieveable with a little effort and I spent a pleasant hour and a half here. Recommended." - Phil (23-May-2012)
"This is one of the few levels I've ever played where I needed the help of a Walkthrough almost from the very start. With the help of Moonpooka's excellent written advice I was able to navigate my way around this complex and ultra-challenging level, and successfully aquired all of the secrets;but even with her help I still found many of the tasks extremely difficult indeed! One room contained several wall buttons which needed to be pushed, but the acrobatics needed to accomplish these tasks were right at the limit of what the player may reasonably be asked to do WITHOUT using the Fly-cheat.Similarly,a couple of rolling-boulder traps required split second timing and masses of re-loading before they were finally conquered. The only utterly unfair sequence was a huge jump to a column which seemed to be quite impossoble;but,as this was only for a secret, most players can ignore it with a clear conscience. Enemies are well placed;objects are used very smartly indeed, while atmosphere is always engrossing and occasionally breathtaking.Textures are generally placed with care, although the fact that one column was climbable was not indicated clearly enough. For those wishing to tackle this adventure unaided - I wish them luck! Everyone else can do as I did and use the Walkthrough;they'll still be kept absorbed for at least an hour-and-a-half. Despite the difficulty, this is still quality adventuring." - Orbit Dream (14-Sep-2009)
"It's amazing how old this level is and yet how great it looks! In this coastal setting level you will come through a number of ingenious pushblock puzzles (with boulders and spike traps to spice them up) and also through a number of deadly corridors with tightly timed jump sequences to avoid being killed. Lara looked to a number of bones, of which I didn't shatter any, which I presume lead to more secrets. There was one particular room with a number of switches around and you had to visit over and over to proceed. The crowbar only appears late in the level, and most of the doors you come to later on are just ammo stocks, but you will keep wondering if you haven't overlooked it along the way. This level is sheer genius! Other reviews mention having to use flycheat, but I didn't have to -- maybe it was left for one of the unfound secrets? 55 minutes, 1 secret. 12/07" - Treeble (26-Dec-2007)
"At this date the revised version of Inheritance is up for a download and so far I encountered no bugs. The first time around I had the buggy version but threw that in the bin. I did however use the flycheat to get on that green pillar (where one can see a small medipack lying) as no matter what I tried I couldn't get there and I did use every trick in the book. The secrets are very well hidden and please shoot every bone you find as they do something. There are some traps in there that will have you reloading quite a lot (specially the spiked boulder one) but for some they might be thrilling. What does prolong the gameplay a bit unnecessary is the finding of the crowbar as that comes later in the game and that means backtracking. So you sort of play part of the level twice. So anyone up for a challenge play it. 06-11-2004" - Gerty (21-Nov-2004)
"It took me a while to finish this level and I have here few minutes fun from good Gameplay and nice looking rooms, but also some irritating traps, for example, in the room when Lara pushes the objects to tiles and avoids four balls in a small room. Another thing: many gates need to open with the crowbar but I found it later and need to come back again to this door apart from all this it's a cool level that is worth a try." - Yoav (29-May-2004)
"This old level is really very good. You start from the caves and darkness and you work your way outside to the light. The jumps you have to perform are not difficult but I understand that at the time it was released it must have been something new to the TR players. There is no need to use the fly cheat anywhere as the three buttons area is easy enough. The same goes for the rolling ball with the spikes coming up. The most exciting moment through all those traps was the three rolling balls area with the ladder. As soon as you think it's over another one comes; I liked the thrill it gave me. I found no secrets and never used the second canopic jar but you don't need them to finish the level so don't spoil the fun and the author's work by cheating your way to the top of the pillar. There are guardian keys and a vraeus to find plus crocodiles dogs and bats to fight. It's a good level and very entertaining. I definitely recommend it." - Kristina (01-Sep-2003)
"I liked the environment and textures in this level and liked that there were more interesting puzzles than finding buttons and switches but I thought some of the puzzles were a bit on the difficult side. There's a large Karnak style area to explore for a number of objects and the exploration is fun but the boulders spikes and confusing pushable object puzzles got on my last nerve way before I actually finished. There are few enemies though and lots of pickups behind doors that require the crowbar." - RaiderGirl (07-Feb-2003)
"I still can't believe that you have to use the fly cheat in the lava room in order to make progress. There are a few other occasions that seem almost impossible and with the kind of inner logic than Mazun employs here I would be surprised if he had made such a gross blunder. However I tried for forty minutes to find a legal way and when I couldn't I had to fall back onto the fly cheat. A little later you come to this very nasty trap where you have a fraction of a second to backflip from a certain point before the boulder and the spikes close in on you. I must have done that 50 times until I succeeded and by then I was really fed up with the level and just wanted to get out of there. Once I had the golden birdy I not even bothered to revisit a gate that was now accessible to be because of the crowbar I had found somewhere along the course. I just placed the crucial item and made for the exit. Nevertheless this level has great potential and if you like a bit of mission impossible you will have a field day here. The beautifully textured canyon and the gloomy catacombs certainly provide the perfect backdrop for some classical raiding and apart from the few frustrating bits the puzzles are pretty neat." - Dimpfelmoser (13-Sep-2002)
"What a real pity - this level has so many smart ideas but it just got me so frustrated and there I really cannot rate it higher. I did enjoy many of the jump sequences and the overall setting is real nice even though some of the larger (not to say huge) walls are wallpaper-style textured. Often enough you have slide-jump-grab moves which take you a few tries and after a rather linear start it sends you off to little side adventures for the next pickup. I found two canopic jars two guardian keys a star and the vraeus and was very bad on the apparently well hidden secrets as I found none L. The puzzles with the pushable objects are very well designed and there are few tough boulder traps too. Enemies are scorpions bats crocodiles dogs warthogs and harpies. So it's all nice and well but somehow it just doesn't tie together and of course the fact that apparently you have to flycheat at least to that one ladder in the three button room is a big let down. 1:30 hours spent and somehow not happy about this level..." - Michael (24-Aug-2002)
"This is a very interesting level with some really nice puzzles a lovely canyon and cave environment to play in and 4 great secrets to find but unfortunately there were a couple of things that let this level down. The main one is that you need to use the flycheat 3 times twice to progress and these occur in the same room and once to reach a secret which is a necessary pick up to aid in finding the fourth and most tricky secret and the second let down is that if you miss a key pick to access that third secret then you can't go back in the level to retrieve it because of a very long slide. Apart from some wonderfully deadly traps the hardest involving groups of large green balls where the margin of error in passing them is extremely thin and some of the puzzles timed runs push/pull objects fire tiles my favourite part was working out how to open the gate to the fourth secret as you had to take note of what Lara's gaze would fix on throughout the level and then work out what to do this wasn't always evident in particular with the room where her gaze fixes to the ceiling but there doesn't seem to be anything to do believe me there is. Lasting around 80 minutes with not many enemies to fight unless you find the fourth secret which then will bring 4 demigods out of the woodwork this is a fun level but it is unfortunate that the flow of things are hampered a little having to cheat to get to areas but I think if knowing this as you go into the level the game might play more smoothly." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"A good level but with too many serious bugs 3 to be precise all for wrong calculation of the distances. The first two in a room with buttons to the corners a button is not attainable how to even a staircase on a walls the last is the third attainable secret with a jump that however results impossible! Obviously after a lot of attempts and consultations with other reviewers the only solution has been the use of the flycheat. For what concerns the history of the level Lara has to succeed to find a hidden room between the rocks where there is a precious artifact but first she has to find some objects in rooms with difficult traps resolve some particular enigmas various stunts and kill little enemies only animal. There are 4 secrets to disposition I have found two honestly! ending the level in 1 hour and 30 minutes about with middle difficulty. I hope that the author that cannot be found! reads this review and gives some explanation on this bug." - Boris (21-Jun-2002)
"This level is like the 'one that got away'. It's so close to being a really great level but several major flaws just keep it from getting there. And since I originally played this level many months ago the author has not chosen to fix the problems. There are actually 2 instances where the flycheat is required as noted by Boris and Sash. However one of the jumps in the three button room is possible although quite difficult. Also as mentioned by Sash a key pickup (to get all the secrets) is impossible to retrieve if you miss it the first time. These coupled with the haphazard texturing and lighting are the main problems with this level. Now what is really remarkable is the way the four secrets are tied together. Pickups in the first three are required to get the fourth and once you get the third you need to backtrack to one earlier spot. As noted you also have to shoot 5 objects one of which is easy to miss. This level also includes many difficult moves (jumps etc.) and a couple very tricky traps. Finally the push-able objects puzzles were very good. It's really a shame this author never released another level or at least never chose to fix the problems in this one." - Tombaholic (21-Jun-2002)
"I don't know if I have the right to review this level since I had to cheat to finish it.....but then I'm not alone on that. I think the intentions are good but.....There are not many enemies but a lot of traps some of them are really hard and then some things aren't what they look like....A little advice...pay attention when Lara looks at something and try to figure out what to do!" - G.Croft (21-Jun-2002)
"I guess Mazun is not only a good level-builder but also a cool player because this level requires many a little hard actions. It includes few hints for players to go ahead. Secrets are very hard and difficult to find out. In particular we must shoot ceilings to get the 5th secret to enter the repositorium and after shooting we are doubtful about our success. I always worried in playing. But the appearance is so much beautiful! A professional work I think. Hope the next is more amusing." - Vinci (21-Jun-2002)
