Reviewer's comments
"First of all, I didn't take the speedrun challenge as I was not in a hurry to leave this beautiful and well-crafted environment. I liked the quest for the secret and the timed runs and the...explosive ending. There is also a good variety for the short time that it lasts. A very enjoyable little romp. Recommended." - billie2001 (13-Mar-2023)
"Level quite short that we can do as quickly as possible, or .... like me quietly to appreciate the environment is rather nice. The timed races are not very hard. I liked the final and the end flyby." - Drakan (19-Nov-2018)
"This is intended to be played as a speedrun level, but you can just play it as a normal level, which is what I did. I took my time exploring the gorgeous snowy environments, the buildings, negotiating treacherous jumps across pits on the snowmobile and hunting down keys to access a secret, which was quite challenging. Enjoy at a leisurely pace." - Ryan (23-Apr-2017)
"Of course, I never liked to play TR levels in a hurry so, with calm, it took me almost half an hour. I missed two of three keyholes so I finished without the secret. The gameplay is good, with the timed runs not very hard; a nice ride with the bike, some enemies to shoot and traps to avoid with enough ammo for the uzis and enough flares and medipacks too. I liked the excellent architecture and the texturization; also cameras, flybies and musics are well implemented too. Even when being a short level, I recommend it. Good work." - Jose (05-Nov-2015)
"This is a foot race, and as someone who has played too many Sonic games I found this to be a neat change of pace for raiding. I like that the incentive for pickups and secrets are increased by awarding time for them - but you'll also want pickups to survive several hordes of enemies gunning you down. There is much to look out for - it rains stalactites and Lara freezes in the cold water, and not to mention the timed switches - that is an entertaining timed-run within a timed-run. The camera shots were mostly helpful (a few got in the way though). The environment is built pretty well but the textures suffer some warps and stretching here and there. I missed several keys which it looks like would have paved the way to more shortcuts - this kind of variety is exactly what I look for in a foot race. The balloons and explosive fireworks certainly add to the competitive atmosphere. My time was 8 minutes 19 seconds." - SSJ6Wolf (11-Oct-2015)
"Gameplay & Puzzles: Not so much gameplay here, only few nice parts - this game is very short. There are no real puzzles. Enemies, Objects & Secrets: Nice use of enemies, loved driving over them with the snowbike. The secret is very well planned and the few objects sweet. Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras: Very good architecture in this realistic valley, but a bit monotonous inside areas. Sounds and cameras are good. Lighting & Textures: Nice texturing, a bit the same, which is also a problem of the lighting. But there are quite good parts too. Total: 7/10, a entertaining and nice looking but very short concept level." - Rambo (01-Oct-2015)
"This is an excellent short level, whose 'speed run' concept actually seems an irrelevance (if not an actual deterrent). It's beautifully built, with a detailed landscape that cries out to be explored at a leisurely pace. The gameplay basically consists of two solid lumps of challenge (the first, involving a timed run;the second being the hunt for a Nitrous canister);and a few enemy confrontations. There's plenty to do (although little actual puzzling),and the level is lovely to look at.Graceful fly-by's;beautiful texturing and interesting light effects (especially on the underwater bodies);even a secret that is a separate challenge in itself. Ignore the superfluous Timer (there's no forfeit for being slow, anyway).Just play and enjoy." - Orbit Dream (23-Sep-2015)
"Interesting idea and a nicely executed TR2 environment. This may be designed as a race level, but you can equally play it as a good, old-fashioned raid in a pleasant setting, with just enough interesting gameplay to make it worthwhile. The timed run is rather well conceived and not frustratingly tight and who doesn't enjoy a snowmobile ride, especially when there's an opportunity to flatten some baddies? If you have previously played 'Following the Balloons to Another Party' by this builder and found the difficulty level too much for your abilities, be assured that this is a much gentler game altogether." - Jay (22-Sep-2015)
"I must be getting old. I used to love those trle time trials, but today I rather enjoyed the leisurely stroll through this little adventure and ended up with about 30 minutes net game time that translated into 17:25 on the timer. I did then start one attempt to a speed run, but got nowhere near Moritz' time, so won't mention that one here... The level itself looks great as you would expect from this builder and is enjoyable enough to play through with a few switches and keys, a double timed run and a snowmobile ride and the single secret takes a bit of effort to acquire. Enemies seem to be added more as an afterthought. Definitely worth a quick look, either to enjoy the snowy hills or to race through it for the best possible time." - MichaelP (22-Sep-2015)
"g&p: the gameplay of the level is not bad at all, we have to find keys to open doors, we need to do same timeruns, hurry in cold water...We have to find three levers in the level, to open 3 doors, levers are really far from the doors, these guys were really smart to make such levers open door that far, in such an icy mountain. Cameras were a problem for the gameplay in around the "speed jump". The level does not really contain a lot of puzzles, find key to open doors, with some timeruns, and some levers, it could be a trle classic level, except for the "electrity timerun". Enemies, objects, secrets, I did not search secrets, the "timer" did stress me a bit, I was trying to reach the end as fast as possible, and it took me already enough time. I found a lot of "uzis" I'm not sure it was useful to put that much weapons in this quite shot/compact level. Enemies were stupids, some of them stuck in walls...objects were too old for the TR4 engine, I mean why not make a tr2 level if you want to build some TR2... everything is TR2like, except Lara. So I do think that objects are too ugly and quite cubic for an NGLE level, even if they were nicely used, except the balloons which appeared when lara slided down the first slope. And I also had a bug the switch to stop electricity when we have the second key, I did need to use the switch twice to make it work...NGLE bug maybe. Atmosphere sound and Cameras, Atmosphere looks empty, the mountain is well made not that cubic but it seems to be really empty, even the balloons seem to be here to "decorate", and it worked not that good, for me it was not like playing TR2.Cameras where not that useful. Sounds were pretty cool even if I had a "bug" with the snowmobile, I had the music of the jeep when I was not on the snowmobile, and vice versa, maybe a problem of "global trigger". Lighting&texture, lighting is quite good, not too bright not too dark, I would have enjoy to have some cold effect, like fog or something like that. Texture were applied with care, even if in some place they are deformed because of the non cubic aspect of the level. TR2 texture are too old, I mean they are ugly compare to textures we can have now...Particulary with NGLE, try to play last teme9 level to see what is a real snow/mountain scenery. All in all this is a quite good level, even I think this kind of level is a waste of time for those who think that a tomb raider does not mean to be a rush to the end. For me this level is solid, even if Timj seems to be torn in between the desire to make "classic TR levels" (btb etc) and the desire to make such new stuff...I do think we have to choose. Every reviewer will rate it as he wants, some of them will appreciate it, some will try to explain why they did not like it much. I hope some play will take the time to play and review this level, only 3 reviewers took the time to play it/review it...That's a shame. I recommand this level for TR2 fans." - Lara_Fox_Croft (20-Sep-2015)
"This is a fun level to play and a worthy bonus level for the in my opinion excellent Balloons level. A tip: don't mind the timer at least in the first playthrough and the gameplay works rather well, even if there is not much to do, but what is presented here is rather fun. An intricate double timed run and the use of the snowmobile with nitro are the highlights in here, unluckily there are very few other tasks. The huge starting area definately feels underexplored and there's only so much you can do in 15 minutes of playtime, the lever sequence to find the nitro is not very inspired either. The whole secret quest, however, is very well executed, the use of the few enemies is smart, even with some you won't be able to kill (directly) and of course the finale is quite nice too. The atmosphere is very convincing with the detailed cave settings and great architecture throughout, plus little details like the dead monks. Textures are done with care but I felt the lighting, despite the use of contrast, feels a bit too flat in the outside areas. Overall a fun and quite atmospheric little level and its only downside is that it's too short to represent the same gameplay quality of a level with solid length. After the normal playthrough I made the speedrun, and managed to get through in 2:09:20 minutes including the secret but no other non-important pickups." - manarch2 (15-Sep-2015)
"I'm surprised I'm only the second reviewer of this level nearly two weeks after its release. Perhaps others may be scared away by its speed run billing. I'm not a fan of hurry-up levels, but this one need not be played that way at all. I ignored the flashing digits at the top left corner of my screen and took my sweet time, enjoying the scenic vistas along the way. I hit the finish line right at 26 minutes (did anyone else beat that?) and had a grand time from beginning to end. At times you actually feel a part of the winter olympics, at least during the outdoor segments. There's quite enough old-fashioned raiding to do indoors, however, including a brief swimming exercise. Manarch2's concise walkthrough made things a lot less stressful for me, particularly in the way he prepped the timed run (which I made on the first try, knowing ahead of time the necessary route to take). The playing time is perhaps too brief to make this level a true classic, but it's certainly fun, easy on the eyes and it pays fitting tribute to the earliest Tomb Raider commercial release for Windows. Recommended." - Phil (14-Sep-2015)
"Wow TimJ, I can't remember a greater representation of root Himalayan captured with TR4 engine. Yes, there are some highly customized adventures which point to TR2, but of the levels using just classic texturing this one is the best of a kind I can remember. Some parts also pay tribute to Golden Mask but their mixing is seamless even though local transitions aren't. Lighting also resembles the original game and has been yet improved into more natural - the only correct way to recall atmosphere from 1997 when using an engine more capacious than the one which already did great back then. The main shape of the path curves and ascends like we are used to know from motorbike levels, and soon we can get across it with a trolley, what is observed from a different angle to make a relatively small level feel much bigger - another piece of design used and reused since classic times but still working very good. Local passages are also conducted the masterful way with room connections utilizing loads of transparency in the old peek-through style, so playing this level is like unwrapping a gift what could fall into Xmas or Carnival category even without a single piece of snow applied. But it's not that you cannot die in here: pitfalls and icicles just wait to perform their job, and we also encounter a bunch of enemies ambushing in groups, oppressing monks and dwelling in fully-equipped hideouts showing traces of their pre-game activity, what feels extremely smart, organized and evil compared to baddies used without a point in many custom levels around. And not to miss that random fun addition, there are some clueless leopards to run over (yes, you can take the bike through the barrier and in this case it's an additional feature instead of a flaw). As for a pinnacle, the sole secret is a masterclass of design, with a complete side thread divided into exploration, riddle and conclusion on its own. SUMMARY: It says a "race level" but don't be fooled. This is a fun mission of simple goal yet complex scenario which took enormous effort to put together and make flow. Almost perfect, I guess any TR2 fan should give it a go." - DJ Full (01-Sep-2015)
