Reviewer's comments
"Well despite the visually appealing lagoon setting we are greeted with as soon as the first level loads I did not really enjoy part one of this adventure as it’s underwater section was so large with gameplay or tasks mainly revolving around just swimming and trying to find how to progress with just item and switch finding. There is a building to explore and some crocs to kill as well as we make our way across the rocks but yes I found this first level disappointing dull with the only half decent task being the timed swim just before we enter the aquatic complex itself. The second level set in the base is by far the superior level of this set with both fun and challenging tasks, traps and timed runs! from the start we have fast lasers to outrun, aquatic sea monsters and guards to fight, tricky platforming, good exploration, a thoughtful pushable object puzzle and a variety of timed tasks: my favourites being the timed run to the top of the room involving platforms circling around a metal column and the poison gas area with the monster. The most original and surprising task was later on when we need to lower a boat suspended in the air by a crane down to the water below to ride it, very fun and original! and i don’t think i’d ever guess that method despite how simple it was! Lol! It’s this and the shooting task that I never would of figured out, these for me were the obscure things I needed a walkthrough for otherwise it was pleasure to figure out what needs to be done for progression. Overall this adventure won me over with its very enjoyable second level as the gameplay and challenges here leave the first level for dust basically." - John (20-Aug-2023)
"I had a reeeeal trouble going through the initial part because of the insanely bright lagoon where everything was similar to each other, but I gotta admit a lot of that trouble is on me - I just cannot help sniffing too much and sometimes I was discovering more than I should... the second part is also too bright but already much better except from the laser room (OMG WTF WUT was even that and why so loud). I noticed a possible softlock with the pushblock, that's not good... what was neat instead was several unique things near the very end, and yes I know the interactive dinghies were not intended but I will count them as extra gameplay as well." - DJ Full (04-Jun-2019)
"Really very worth to play this set of two levels. A huge dose of exploration and variety of tasks combined with a great architecture and nice environments, icredible new objects, good use of cameras and musics and perfect texturization. Highly recommended." - Jose (25-Mar-2019)
"If any other custom level has been released posthumously, I'm not aware of it. Even though A Summer Adventure, as indicated by its title, has nothing to do with Christmas, it's fitting that it be offered to us as an Advent level, and my hat is off to Sponge and any others who put the finishing touches on it for public consumption. I knew Pat to have a saving faith, and there's no question in my mind that she's now resting in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior. It's tempting to award top marks to this level as a tribute to Pat's memory, but to do so for that reason alone would be unfair to the builders who have truly earned such an honor. Even so, this is an exciting, fun-filled raid that requires both mental acuity and an experienced set of playing skills, so A Summer Adventure is certainly worthy of a high rating. The timed runs were taxing but fair, and Dutchy in his walkthrough has documented some trouble areas that might cause problems for players, notably that jump to the first pole in the loading dock area. There are two TR4 files that fit together seamlessly, and my total playing time was just over an hour and a half. It's worthwhile to watch the cut scenes that unfold after you hit the finish trigger, which show why the raid was necessary in the first place. I liked the use of the Beach Boys' hit at the end, I Get Around, which was popular when I (and probably Pat as well) was a college student. Think about Pat's many contributions to this site as you play her praiseworthy release." - Phil (27-Dec-2018)
"First of all congratulations to all who helped to release this level of mugs which is not necessarily a specific level to advent calendar. I just noticed the non animated water textures and the bastet statue upside down, the set was remarkably well corrected and is nice to play." - Drakan (21-Dec-2018)
"As the title indicates, this is not an Advent level, but it certainly is a wonderful Christmas present. I think we all very much appreciate the work put in by the team to restore Pat's last level. The island setting is very atmospheric and the base is impressive, with some amazing laser traps. Enemies are mainly guards, but there are some mutants in the base (quite a few sea hags) to spice things up, just how Lara likes her summer 'holidays'. Agility tests and timed runs (and swims) are nicely judged, difficulty-wise and everything proceeds at a brisk, enjoyable pace. Obviously, this is a bittersweet experience, but definitely one to treasure" - Jay (18-Dec-2018)
"Well Jorge, the level was completed except for some minor issues that had to be fixed. I did some work on objects for Mugs and we were testing it when her HD crashed. I believe as I see the level now, the game play is exactly the same it was so it was mainly re texturing the whole level again. Thanks for that guys. All tens, just because..." - Dutchy (15-Dec-2018)
"This level has a really touching but also adventurous story and after all it's a really great tribute to Mugs to have this released as a gift for the Advent calendar. It feels somewhat pointless to add a critique to this level, so I leave it by saying it's a fun if not highly involved game with a variety of tasks, rather few puzzles and a few bugs. The only more serious ones were: the only key in the first level dropped by an enemy, this went under a machine for me so I never found it the first time around and was stuck for good; also, the second level lacks an ambient background audio. Otherwise, everything is handled with care and skill and there are a lot of nicely built areas and fluent gameplay, four rather easy secrets, and 35 minutes of net playtime. A huge thank you to all who were involved in the release of this effort!" - manarch2 (15-Dec-2018)
"A really touching idea to continue one of Pat's works that she sadly never got round to finishing. This isn't a particularly festive adventure as it wasn't intended for the Calendar, but was released as a gift instead. Still, it's a great one, with pleasing scenery and involving and challenging gameplay. The timed runs had me going for a while, but I eventually conquered them without too much frustration and the layout of the island and base complex area is very well done. Maybe a few too many guards and hags at times and a few sounds seemed slightly off, but nothing detrimental to the gameplay at all. A touching tribute to a much missed builder. Thanks to Sponge and the Levelbase Team for finishing this one, and rest easily Mugs." - Ryan (15-Dec-2018)
"Lara explores a sea base to find the next statue for her cat collection. Gameplay is a good mix of exploration, traps, and combat. I particularly liked climbing up to a chained boat and pulling it down to use it as my escape. I would have liked to see some puzzles; I did come across some pushblocks but I never ended up using them, except to expose a switch behind one. Combat is good and features a variety of enemies, including a fight with a large fish creature in a poisoned chamber (although his death animation seems to be triggered haphazardly). Decorative objects are used well. Architecture is solid, the outdoors is slightly blocky in some areas but mostly nice and natural. Audio is used well, except the boat which has irritating sound effects but that is a small part of the level. The cutscenes are good (particularly the title sequence, nicely done) but switches could use more camera cues. There are a few random missing textures and some small patches of wallpapered textures, but these are minimal and textures overall are done well. The lighting is decent overall, but too flat and bright in a couple of areas. Overall a nice raid, and I'm glad the community took time to make it fully realized. 1 hour 32 minutes." - JesseG (15-Dec-2018)
"I don't know how much of this is mugs' level and how much of it had to be rebuilt but, even though it has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas (and of course it wasn't initially meant for Christmas) it's still a wonderful Christmas gift, an homage and a team effort for which we all should be grateful. I know I am. For that, together with the clearly apparent mastery of it all, both in the first and second levels, I'm more than happy to grant it four tens. Varied and well built, a really nice adventure. Thank you and Merry Christmas." - Jorge22 (14-Dec-2018)
