Reviewer's comments
"This was a really solid Colosseum level of a little under an hour playtime and in general I really enjoyed the adventure with the expected gladiators, many lions and a few skeletons to battle along the way. What spoiled it (at least a little) for me are a few things that could have easily been addressed and were not, such as: the wrong animation when Lara pushes the many, many buttons, several flames placed too low on torches, a significant amount of squashed textures, maybe some of the darkness was a bit too much and then there was the fight with the 4 hydras that really took me a few attempts before managing it without any intermediate saves to avoid the issue of the door maybe not opening. The highlights for me where the two flybys that nicely introduce a next area and the 5 secrets were a nice addition too. For sure worth a look if adventures in good old Rome are your thing." - MichaelP (14-Mar-2024)
"A beautiful level based on the Colosseum from TR5. The lighting fits in well with the textures and geometry of the level, although you can see some textures that are missing or look squashed or drawn out. The puzzles are also well done and not so difficult that you despair. You fight lions, skeletons, knights and hydras, although I had a big problem with the latter, a softlock to be precise. You have to defeat all four to start a flyby sequence, which in turn opens a gate. However, this wasn't triggered the first time, which was probably because I saved the game when a few Hydras were already dead. So my strong recommendation would be to kill all four without saving or loading. That was the only thing I found very questionable, and need a fix. Otherwise it was a nice and believable atmosphere of a coliseum and was exciting until the end. Very well done." - Astraf (07-Jan-2024)
"This level had an interesting atmosphere, with some nicely designed areas reminiscent of the classic TR 5 Rome levels without being a remake. There are many parts which could've been better designed, especially that there are several texture mistakes that should've been avoided, but it still works rather nicely together. I could've done with less dark underground parts, though. Gameplaywise I felt more than a little want at the end, the everlasting to and fro and dozens of levers to be used were not exactly enjoyable parts and there are few moments that distract from the fairly monotonous design - a certain lack of puzzles (the one button puzzle was purely trial and error) or even serious platforming. Enemies are fitting but I also had problems with the hydra fight and the door that would not open. This 30 minute level shows the potential of the builder mostly in terms of visual design but there's a need to improve in terms of gameplay. Found all fairly easy secrets." - manarch2 (23-Aug-2021)
"Very short and sweet level, variety of enemies in such small level, however I find the level a bit big for some easy puzzles, I got lost few times when going back and forth but it wasn't a big of deal maybe I am just too lazy. everything in this level looks superb, I love the layout of the castle is on top and the rest of level which was mostly caves was underneath. I run out of flares quickly because the level is too dark and there were not much flares pickups and I would say that's the only thing that to keep in mind when playing this level.. something else that this level doesn't have a backstory or a meaning of what is happening in the level because I like reading people creative ideas and what they have in their minds I think it's beautiful" - p1kaa (11-Aug-2021)
"a solid effort overall but with an abrupt ending after 58 minutes , and many texturing mistakes (compressed most of the time). There was a bit of confusion for me in the progression and too many buttons to push. Aside from that the atmosphere is there , secrets and enemies also (btw i could save during the fight with the 4 hydras) and some good traps also. Nothing too difficult." - eRIC (30-Mar-2021)
"I really liked this level. It is not too difficult, but very relaxing. Levels in Rome are quite rare. Nice to see this beautiful location" - ddaring_dash (01-Feb-2021)
"A solid little adventure in the style of the TR5 Rome levels, the third Rome level in particular. The gameplay consists mostly of finding some puzzle items to open doors and pulling switches (with the wrong animation unfortunately). Sometimes there were many ways to go, so it does not have the feel of linearity, but after exploring every of these ways it's clear that there would have been an intended order to do the tasks, cause in some cases one other possible way leads to an dead end or "just" an item. The secrets were too obvious sometimes, I found three of five, but without actually trying to find any. The overall gameplay experience was positive nevertheless, cause it felt coherent with the environment and atmosphere. The tasks itself could have been a bit more innovative or at least more varied though. The atmosphere and the use of audio tracks always felt on point, as well very close to TR5 (which is a good thing!). Texture placement wasn't as good as the lighting sometimes, but these are only minor issues. It unfortunately ends pretty anticlimactically and no story seems to exist. It took me about 45 minutes." - MarlenaCrystal (20-Dec-2020)
"This is a TR4 level that is remarkably faithful to the Rome sections of TRC. The hydra courtyard is especially noteworthy for its beauty, the tantalizing glimpse of the Colosseum it affords, and the rain that starts falling soon after you first enter, turning quickly into a steady downpour punctuated by crackling thunder. I was prepared to award even higher scores until the final sequences in dismally dark surroundings that obliged me to use up most of my remaining supply of flares. This put a damper on what until then was a thoroughly fun raid, but it still gave me warm fuzzies that left me hoping for an encore. This builder is quickly establishing lofty credentials that place him high up on my list of favorites." - Phil (08-Nov-2020)
"Comfy comfy comfy! Visually appealing, immersive in character, packed with subtle touches, and also featuring one of the best Roman patios I can remember. After we get tons of supplies it ends very suddenly, so it's probably a prologue to something more complete we might see one day, but even in the current trimmed form it's definitely underrated if you ask me." - DJ Full (20-Oct-2020)
"Gameplay & Puzzles: Pretty straightforward key and switch driven progression. There was also a fair amount of backtracking to use key items. The only task I would consider a puzzle was finding the correct combination of buttons to press in the hallway with the statues. I 'solved' by trial and error, only later realizing the position of the patterned tiles near the correct buttons. A few nasty surprise traps to navigate but nothing overly taxing. Newer raiders would most likely be able to play through this one without too much frustration. I felt that the level ended very abruptly, which made me a bit sad. A bit of story line would also have been appreciated! A story gives the raid purpose, even if it's just a few sentences, and it doesn't need to be stellar writing. Just a few details like what Lara is after or why she's there goes a long way in orienting the audience and engaging them. Enemies, Objects & Secrets: There were plenty of enemy ambushes and a heated boss fight. Luckily there were plenty of pickups as well so Lara never lacked health or ammo. Combat was fairly balanced, I thought. The fight with the hydras provided a hectic interlude from exploration. There are plenty of shotgun shells to use in dispatching the beasts. I located all five secrets through careful exploration and paying attention to the environment. Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras: The atmosphere is spot on - the caverns and chambers of the complex are lonely and foreboding. The above ground courtyard was a nice break from the gloom (until it started raining). Sounds were fine; background ambience and keyed tracks played at moments that made sense and added to the overall experience. Cameras were fine; the hint cameras worked properly and the angle while exploring never irritated. Lighting & Textures: The level is very dark in many places and flares aren't as plentiful as I would have liked. Very dark corners and other sections. This is a personal gripe of mine (my eyesight is getting to be not so great, even with a big monitor and the very dark areas strain my eyes) so take with a grain of salt. On one hand the lighting works well for the atmosphere of the area, on the other it's no fun to stumble in the dark after burning all flares and have to use muzzle flash to explore. Overall it's an enjoyable level with a solid raid. I hope the builder keeps building and getting better!" - Chel (18-Oct-2020)
"It's good to play a Rome level, even if the Colosseum can only be seen beyond some bars - but that has been already mentioned countless times. So be it, the Colosseum. This one combines exploration, traps and fighting quite well, namely the four hydras in the courtyard - the level is full of great-looking, threatening hydras, but fortunately only those four will cause trouble. And what trouble do they cause, as I have the European alt gr that makes Lara keep wasting her shotgun ammo at every side jump she makes. Still, the way they stand in the said courtyard, the best is to simply run in circles in the middle of them and keep shooting until you're blessed enough to watch them all blast into pieces. The dreaded tight rope is there too, but it's a short walk and you may even just jump when you get to the second one. Basically, I enjoyed the level and my only main gripe was the darkness throughout." - Jorge22 (13-Oct-2020)
"I was oh so hoping the four hydras in the courtyard were purely for decorative purposes. Fat chance! Actually, knowing how to deal with enemies is paramount and hydras aren’t nearly as bad as I used to think them. I must say I enjoyed a nice little trip to Rome – another raid that benefits from lovely atmospheric sound files. It’s not a difficult level by any means, but there’s enough to hold the interest for the comparatively short time it lasts. I liked it." - Jay (05-Oct-2020)
"Well, actually, the "Colosseum" part of the level is fairly limited, aside from a few faraway glances out of grated windows, but this moderate length raid really isn't too bad. Admittedly, the gameplay is a little repetitive in places with rather a lot of buttons and switches to pull, the section that required you to deplete Lara's health by dashing through spikes seemed a bit odd and the hydra fight can be buggy if you don't execute it correctly, but progression flows nicely and in a smooth linear fashion, with the only real unfair puzzle being the button puzzle in the statue-lined hallway, to which there seemed to be no other solution other than trial and error. Lighting and textures are solid enough, but a little on the bland side in the underground areas. Not a masterpiece, but a solid enough raid." - Ryan (30-Sep-2020)
"Indeed the best level from this author. No hard tasks except the fight with the hydras and a gameplay with no much backtracking. I had to solve the buttons puzzle by trial and error and I couldn't find a way to deactivate the spikes near the end; also I suffered a bug when saving and reloading the game in between when fighting with the hydras, but nothing really important. The environments are convincing but the textures in small and triangular surfaces are not well applied. The best for me was the use of cameras and sounds. Good work." - Jose (28-Sep-2020)
"Where is the Colosseum in this game? Oh, yes... looking carefully it's barely visible from a pair of windows, but you never go there, instead you play in some caves, ancient rooms and a roman place as boss room. By the way, the hydra's sequence is somehow bugged so, at the end of the fight, the gate opens only if you are lucky (or if you don't save during the battle, as someone guessed). Fighting hydras is always boring for me and the thought that it might be a futile effort doesn't help my mood. It's a shame because in general the design is good and the gameplay quite enjoyable. Sadly the story is absent, the title is totally misleading and the abrupt ending left me a bad taste in the mouth." - Teone (27-Sep-2020)
"An easy and nice pleasant level. It took me some 55 mins to coplete, I've found 4 secrets. The level is not very complex, although its enemies can hurt Lara a lot, there are plenty of ammo to enjoy the confrontations. The level path is well balanced between progress and backtracking, the only what shocked me was the sudden level ending. I liked a lot the ambience of this level, and the weather subtle I found it quite immersive. On the other side, there is a switches puzzles that I didn't figure how to solve, I explored a bit but at the end just did it by try and error. In my eyes, this is a good general level, nice for casual fun." - Adngel (24-Sep-2020)
"Gameplay&Puzzles - I wish some ideas were a bit more engaging. There's quite a bit of switch pulling and opening doors. I'm actually don't really mind this much but some of the backtravel was iffy for me some times. Maybe more platforming throughout would have been nice here. Like the timed run was a nicely placed. The Hydra fight certainly grasped my attention. I recently played Rome in TRC and finally learned how to take them out the right way so I couldn't pass this up. Enemies, Objects & Secrets - Enemies are fitting we have Lions, bats and even a well placed skeleton. Objects were fitting for the Rome theme. Secrets were pretty easy for me to find I found all of them. Maybe a few flares in the beginning would have been nice. I was pretty good on ammo and health. Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras - The atmosphere I thought was nice. I enjoyed this the most. Sounds were pretty decent. I remember some highlight moments with them. Camera seemed pretty well used. Lighting & Textures - Pretty nice overall I'd say. Some extra care could have been nice here. But I enjoyed the look overall. I thought the fog also did a good job of submerging me into your level. Overall a fun adventure took me 46mins and 5/5 secrets. I wonder where shall we go after this? Looks like there was more =)" - StudBuddha (23-Sep-2020)
