Reviewer's comments
"Just by telling you that at the very beginning you must do some jumping on pillars in a huge room, you already know what to expect. Running through loooong passages that lead to this room where you must do more jumping, then you fall down into this other room, then another passage, then a maze, and it just seems like it never ends. But it does at some point, so that's a good thing." - alan (23-Nov-2022)
"Jumps and jumping sequences in a level can be OK, provided they are at least entertaining and challenging. However, this is made up of nothing but jumps and climbs, interspersed with a few swimming passages and long corridors. It's not very attractive looks-wise either with stretched and missing textures as well as pitch black spots. To be fair, it is a very old level, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed it." - Ryan (07-Jul-2017)
"I think the watchword here is bland, which applies to the gameplay and the environment. Most of the textures are sandy, with very little in the way of objects to add a little relief. There's a bit of jumping, climbing, swimming and shooting ninjas to achieve and two parts of a cartouche to find. There's a few boulder and fire traps too, but the whole thing just feels rather dull and far longer than the 40 minutes it actually lasts, which isn't the best recommendation." - Jay (30-Jul-2016)
"I don't know how a builder can release a level like this seeing all kind of defects you can find in a custom level: paper walls and floors, ilegal slopes, missing textures, elongated textures, cameras going out of the world... Also the architecture is very simple, very huge rooms with monotonous texturization, no puzzles to solve, no objects to ornate the rooms, repeated traps, dark areas where you are not able to see even with flares... Definitely, a level to forget." - Jose (11-Jan-2016)
"In my on-going efforts to play all of the very earliest levels which I'd somehow not quite got around to until now,I've had to confront the inevitable truth that a lot of them are going to be unavoidably poor...and this particular adventure is a classic case in point. It's not that the gameplay is in any way weak, but you can't hope to create a fully-rounded level with little more than slides, jumps and swims. The repetetiveness of the whole thing becomes quite fatiguing after a while, and this is not in any way helped by the uninteresting and occasionally scrappy textures and half-hearted lighting.Enemies crop up once in a while, but pose little threat;while objects are mostly left out. There's little atmosphere and poor use of cameras, and the whole thing (despite the occasional imaginative use of rolling boulders)slouches along for 40 minutes. Another one for completists only." - Orbit Dream (01-Jul-2013)
"Another amateurish Tut1-WAD level, with the occasional oversized rooms, monkeyswings that don't work (but unmarked swings that do), the odd unpredictable fall through floor, some illegal slopes toward the end and occasional wafer thin surfaces. What was a total let down, however, was the texture work which seems to have been applied careless, for they often are stretched, wallpaper effect and there's even room for untextured surfaces. Camera flybies could have used more work as well, for they often go through walls and floors. 35 minutes, 2 secrets. 08/07" - Treeble (12-Aug-2007)
"I suppose the emphasis must be on 'folly' because even though the level is designed to accommodate what you do the decor is awful in fact it's very bland and ugly in places. Folly in this country means a building or structure that has no real purpose they were built to give work to starving people rather than just feeding them; to give them I suppose a sense of worth. These follys are sometimes ingenious constructions and sometimes weird mismashes of architectural elements like columns sitting on windows etc. Anyway that is more or less what's going on here you are in huge weird rooms and you need to make your way across and through them occasionally going up a sloped corridor to avoid a boulder and long swims that seem to go on forever. At the end what I remember are the monkey swings jump sequences over columns fire floors the seemingly never ending spiral of a 'maze' when you keep looking up to see what look like crawlspaces and you can't get up there the long swims the long sloped corridors sometimes with boulders in them and a terrific long fall into water. You need to leave your sense of realism behind before entering here." - CC (15-Oct-2004)
"This old level looks wonderful (the textures) and gave good atmosphere only two half cartouches need to be found. Most of the level Lara runs and tries to find the way to end she must be careful about many spiked boulders and a few ninjas - enjoyable level for sure." - Yoav (16-May-2004)
"Enemies are ninjas and Lara'll find more than enough weapons and ammo to take on an army. Found twice the grenade launcher and if I looked right when Lara picked up a heap of ammo also twice a crossbow. There are boulder traps throughout the level some are easy and some are not. There is even a quadruple boulder trap and yes - I died many times. In a way I was glad of all the pick ups as with some long breath taking swims I needed the medpacks. The jumping was great but you also have to monkey climb. There are also some drops into water and boy they were getting deeper and deeper. The ending was very sudden as Lara approached the sarcophagus as it finished there. Found 2 secrets. 25-11-2002" - Gerty (26-Nov-2002)
"Lot's of thin walls stretched textures large empty rooms and careless lighting but there are a few good jumping sequences along the way the boulder traps are quite exciting and the fast paced gameplay has a certain appeal. I wonder why you find two grenade launchers and heaps of ammo when you never encounter a mummy afterwards. Such a waste. There are long swims fall through floors (although you will be extremely grateful for one of those) deadly tiles and only a handful of levers. For those of you who have read my review of Escape from Sintech City and who are still wondering what an 'Achsensprung' is this level illustrates it quite beautifully. Halfway through the adventure when Lara comes to a room with a fake monkey swing where she actually has to cross the room via the scarab tiled catwalk you get a long shot of her running from left to right. Then just in the middle of the catwalk the camera view switches to the other side so that Lara is suddenly running from right to left. Very disorientating cause you have the feeling that Lara is running back and as the author has cut two long shots back to back it's a jump cut as well. However if you walk back and then run and jump so that the camera view switches right in the middle of the jump you will notice that it's far less confusing as your perception concentrates more on the action itself than the way it is depicted. Well I find all of this utterly fascinating." - Dimpfelmoser (14-Oct-2002)
"This level took just short of an hour to complete and comprised of some very tough jumps. The rooms were overly large and the boulder traps devious. There were heaps of corridors to negotiate and it got tiresome at times with all the running around but all in all not a bad level." - Torry (20-Aug-2002)
"So far this is definitely Robert's best work but still it lacks a little something. Texturally this does not stray far from his other works with the use of a sandy colour across everything as well as a little green in a few areas rooms are also a bit boxy but I guess in the end they serve their purpose. The game play consists of a lot of mainly maneuvering through rooms a bit of swimming not that many enemies finding a couple of large pick up secrets and trying to avoid a fair few boulder and fire tile traps which all combines to make this a fun but not difficult 40 minutes level." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Well I don't know. On the one hand there is very careless and bland texturing and often-unnecessary darkness tedious mazes and long monkey swings booby traps and a breathtakingly long swim. Then there is a pickup frenzy (twice actually) and a few fun jump sequences and a nice spike ball puzzle - but I had the same issue Jbc21 had and got stuck because one of the rolling balls blocked the exit. So I am not overly happy with the experience but you may want to try for yourself." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"A very strange and mysterious level with spiral-like rooms and mazes. I actually started the game backward (by the end) and I didn't really understand how to progress. When I started over but in the right direction I was really enjoying the gameplay until I got stuck in this spike ball room! And I am still stuck! I couldn't reach the end! So unless there is a solution to the game I write this rating. I might reconsider it later..." - Jbc21 (21-Jun-2002)
"After playing this forty minute level what stands out for me the most are the boulder traps the jump/slide pillar puzzles the fire traps the mazes the jumps and monkey swings and the nice swims. The majority of the time though was spent running through large rooms shooting the occasional ninjas trying to quickly get to the next puzzle. I'm not sure what the objective is as I got to a room with a sarcophagus and the level was suddenly over and I left feeling like I hadn't done anything. Overall a simple level with a few tricky moves and few enemies." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Difficult jumps and a cartouche puzzle. Many bugs textures related and very big empty rooms. The only traps and obvious enough were the spike balls and burning tiles. One trap though really surprised me the one with two spike balls coming from either sides at the maze it was a good one. Large areas with sand and baddies one very long underwater tunnel which almost drowned poor Lara. I don't really like running for a couple of minutes to reach the other side with no real purpose but only to meet another enemy and a swim or a climb. Not my idea of fun." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"The texturing and lighting are not very good it is very bright in some places where you have nothing to do and sometimes very dark when you have traps to avoid or jumps to do. There is a plethora of pickups but no flares I found two secrets and had 46 grenades at the end just to kill a few more ninjas. I thought this level would never finish. There are many rooms to visit in some of them there are some interesting series of jumps or spike balls traps but you have also to run or swim in long corridors all that to find two pieces of a cartouche. Maybe worth a download for some interesting actions." - eRIC (21-Jun-2002)
