Reviewer's comments
"It’s always a delight to play the first work of an esteemed builder and discover that they already had promise from the very beginning. Following some cheeky misdirection in the opening room is an agreeable yet mournfully brief adventure through a classic Egyptian tomb setting and all of its most common characteristics are on display here with levers to pull, items to find, vases to shoot, keys to place, boulders to evade and scorpions to slay before you are able to make your escape. The texturing is pleasing to the eye, the oft-modified geometry helps the environments to feel more authentic and some camerawork at opportune times adds a stylistic flourish to the map. Of course, the one thing that should be apparent to everyone upon completion is that the level ends much sooner than you might expect, especially considering this was intended to be a sequel to TR4 (though you’d never know it without reading the description!). This results in some questionable design choices being made such as the revolver and LaserSight located in the same room in lieu of creating some distance between these two items and thus extending the overall runtime, but whether the level is short because key items are close together or if the converse is true, it’s hard to say for certain… regardless, you probably won’t regret playing this and in any case it’s an easy one to cross off the list." - Ejecta (07-Jan-2024)
"1st level of miss kroft (it always takes 1), certainly already an omen for its future good levels. Theme Egypt, this level is short and a little dark in places but it already has some subtle ingredients. To do." - Drakan (20-Oct-2019)
"Another enjoyable Egyptian game, consisting of a straightforward gameplay, cunningly-placed objects, stunning atmosphere and correct use of lighting and textures, which turned this level into one of the good levels ever released on this website. Recommended. Thanks!" - Mehrbod (13-Jan-2019)
"This is a standard Tut1 level of the kind I suspect the good people at Core were hoping to see come out when they released the Level Editor: capably constructed, free of glitches, built with care for textures and lighting. So, a good Tut1 level, but a Tut1 level nevertheless, and a very short one at that: you’ll be through in under 20 minutes of net gaming time, and real gaming time will not be significantly longer. As previous reviewers have noted, the gameplay is generally undemanding, but I liked the fact that the two rollingball traps were set up in such a way that you can avoid being squished even the first timeâ€"if you react with appropriate swiftness, obviously; I was also saved from getting spiked underwater by consistency in texturing. These are rare occurrences in the TRLE world and therefore to be cherished all the more. Enemies are few and harmless, but placed rather well nevertheless; as Sethian’s review points out, the absence of BADDY_1 types is to be applauded, since this is one of those early levels which claim to be a continuation of the TR4 storyline, so the baddies would make even less sense here than they usually do in Tut1 levels. However, this absence and the fact that you emerge out of some pyramid at the end are the only things in the entire level to support that claim, so it is after all only marginally more valid in this case than it is in those of Salvin (Goodbye Lara!) or Pedros (Lara Alive!) and might just as well be ignored; indeed, it probably should be, as seeing how short and slight the level is, one might well wonder what all the fuss was about." - Mulf (08-Jan-2018)
"Monika has gone on to be one of the most highly thought of builders out there, and poses a highly recognisable building style. Although not quite brought to the forefront in this, her debut level, signs of her talent are still visible. A few sneaky red herrings (particularly that out of reach empty crawlspace), we'll made textures and lighting, nice enemy encounters, and smooth gameplay, despite there being no puzzles. A nice little starter, but a rather abrupt ending." - Ryan (14-Oct-2017)
"This debut level is pretty linear and easy. The first flyby shows you a crawlspace above, but you never get there, at least not legally. The objective is to find 2 stars in an Egyptian environment, while avoiding the mummies that you encounter. I found 1 secret but it didn't register in the statistics. I see The author has more good levels and I'm looking forward to play them in the future." - alan (30-Aug-2017)
"This is the debut level from one of our most reliable builders, who was quite prolific during the early years but has produced nothing new of late. One can tell by playing this level that she was feeling her way along and getting her feet wet. Lara's upward look at the very beginning must have been an intentional tease (you can't get up there legally and there's nothing there anyway), as otherwise there's no point to the room being there at all. Everything's pretty straightforward here, with good scenery and lighting and a fairly linear path to follow. You get a shotgun and a revolver, but neither is of much use against the mummies you encounter. The only other enemies are a few scorpions. The only secret documented in Gerty's walkthrough didn't register as such in my game. A nice beginning, but a bit short at 25 minutes." - Phil (13-May-2016)
"Even in the first level from this good builder you can notice the peculiar style who makes most of the players like her levels. Easy gameplay with no puzzles but nice and entertaining tasks; good use of the cameras and musics, good texturization and lighting, solid architecture, well balanced enemies and definitively a short level worth to play." - Jose (17-Apr-2015)
"How wonderful to discover the debut level of one of my favourite builders. Even with such a short (approximately 15 minutes) level, the budding talent is obvious - it's beautifully made and such gameplay as there is has been thoughtfully produced, with some nice touches. It made me realise how long it has been since we had a new level from this excellent builder - we can but hope." - Jay (16-Feb-2015)
"Every level builder starts sometimes small. Just it is with Miss Kroft. This level is her first work. And interesting, unfortunately rather short, interpretation, as Lara has escaped in TR4 out of the pyramid. Though the level may be rather short, but for it Miss Kroft has avoided all beginner's mistakes capably. There are no stretched textures, no gigantic rooms and no dull Gameplay. There are, except a few mummies and scorpions, no opponents. And the riddles are completely easy. Hence, the level is suitable very well for beginners. Playing time was about 20 minutes." - Scottie (23-Jun-2009)
"There were at least 3 levels in the first few months of the LE which posited what could conceivably have happened to Lara after the end of TRLR: Hokolo's majestic 'Laras return'; Kurts ingeniously-plotted 'Old Haunts; and this little adventure by Monika. It's by far the shortest of the three and the simplest but, even in her level-building infancy, Monika's trademarks are rather apparent. Viz.atmospheric lighting, immaculate texturing, thoughtfull enemy placement,a few innovative puzzles (especially the underwater shootable vases) and occasional moments of quirkyness (the red-herring crawlspace at the start). It's all over not long after its begun, but it looks good and moves along smoothly. Shame the beautiful final room was severely underused, though. A promising little debut, nonetheless." - Orbit Dream (06-Feb-2008)
"I have three favourites among the female part of the building squad. Monika is without doubt one of them. Walhalla was the first custom level adventure I got through in one piece and I've also played her last couple of levels. For that reason I decided that I wanted to go back in time and see her earlier offerings. This is Monika's tutorial level and I must say I really enjoyed it. It is really very good for being someone's first level and especially for being a level of that time. Although quite simple as most Egypt levels were back then it has a beautiful and uncomplicated charm that makes it one of the classical levels, taken straight from the early days of the level editor. The level itself is rather short and I got through it in about 20 minutes or so. It's straight-forward and contains no puzzles that will have you wondering around aimlessly for hours(the level is honestly not even big enough to allow for that). There are some traps such as the regular spikes, fire and spiked balls to dodge, a few hands and two pieces of a cartouche to find + some mummies and scorpions to keep Lara busy. The lights and textures are well distributed, giving way for an overall good(although not very striking) atmosphere. I found one secret which didn't register as such and all in all I had a good time the short while it lasted." - Selene (21-Aug-2006)
"This is obviously the author's first level, yet it was still highly enjoyable and very creative. I am a big fan of tr4 continuations, and this a wonderful simple level to play. The gameplay was quite good, and the puzzle solving was simple yet enjoyable. Traps are placed wonderfully, and for me the most memorable traps are a pit of spikes that pop up when one accidentally falls into the water. This is highly unexpected and therefore works beautifully. The objects are of course the limiting Tut1.wad, yet the creator at least doesnt randomly decide to place the BADDIE1 enemies all over this lost and untouched tomb Lara is trapped in. What got me to fall in love with the enemy placement and therefore give this category a 10, is the moment when one shimmeys along, pulls up, and then without expecting it a scorpion comes crawling along through the 1 click high crevace to sting Lara. this is a wonderful and simple creative placement which one doesnt find to often. Also, shooting the underwater vases with the revolver and laser sight was a great and clever addition. The atmostphere in this level was quite good, however it didnt have that dark suffocating feel I would expect from a level entitled "Tomb Survivor". And, although the textures are place very nicely, I think their bright and decorative nature takes away a bit from the sinister atmostphere that i think the creators where going for. Otherwise, the authors make good use of audio tracks and cameras - thankfully neither of which is overused. The texturing in general is very nice and simple... although a bit odd and random at times in my opinion. The lighting could also use a bit of work, and some of the random shadow bulbs placed here and there looked a bit out of place. Yet, all in all this level was a very short and sweet and enjoyable experience." - Sethian (26-Jul-2006)
"A great level, maybe a bit short (took me about 20 min to finish it) I really enjoyed this level due to the nice atmosphere. Great Job, Monika!" - QRS (17-Mar-2005)
"Rather a quick level (25mins) with quite straight forward gameplay if you keep your eyes open. Never did I find out why Lara looked up to the lit space in the start room. Enemies are scorpions (2 lots unless you take a detour and meet the third) and zombies (easily avoided). Find 4 pickups and you can get to the open air. Graphics standard Egyptian but the lighting does create some atmosphere. More sound could have been included. I assume this was Monika's first level and as such was a good platform for the later sagas she tells. If you have the time it is worth a look." - Whistle (06-Jun-2004)
"This is the first time I give a comment for a level. This one looks ok. Lighting should be worked more with. The texture looks not meticulous. The author has also put some sound for some event. And the puzzles are good. I was stuck because of not finding the right secret item which is located under a shatterable jar in the water room for the holder. I found 1 secret in the room with firing floor. But it's not difficult to get to the secret area. But: Good level! I hope the author will have better investment for your future levels. Good luck!" - DeathMelody (01-Jan-2004)
"By playing Monica's first level I have to see that I didn't find any mistakes that usually beginners make. It's an Egyptian level with mummies and a few scorpions and rather short about twenty minutes. Well constructed with two hands and a cartouche to find you go from one room to another by climbing poles to place the items mentioned above. This is surely a fun level to play and a good way to start with Monica's levels and finally go down the list to finish with a few of her master pieces." - Kristina (07-Aug-2003)
"This was a quickie and I couldn't play it for a while as I got a corrupt download and recently got a working one. A Tut1 level very easy but most first level are. Finding two Hands and the Cartouche and you're out of this Tomb. Then I went back and used the fly cheat to have a look at that mysteriously looking crawlspace Lara looked at in the first time around and don't tell me than none of the reviewers did cause I won't believe them. Nice touch Monika hahahaha. 28-10-2002" - Gerty (09-Nov-2002)
"Now the first work of the siblings Miss Kroft and Uzi is already a little bit older. In puzzles there is not a lot to solve the one with the vases was not known that well at the time. Miss Kroft has stayed on this path to this day. The atmosphere in the level is quite good good lighting fitting sound and beautiful cameras. There were not many opponents a few scorpions... The level is suitable for beginners very much they can practice Lara's basic moves." - Xxenofex (17-Aug-2002)
"This level ends where the 'Between the Space' level begins and sadly it just doesn't match up to it this level is straightforward and holds no great challenge except for an extremely well hidden crucial pick up although it looks quite appealing and has some nice things to do if I had the choice between this level and 'Between the Space' I know which I would choose." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Very short typical adventure playable in under 30 minutes. All you actually do is find two hands and two pieces of a cartouche. Good idea with the vases in the water some scorpions and mummys but all in all not overly exciting." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"Not exactly a real tough level to get through except for one cleverly hidden pick up. I must admit I enjoyed this level. Lara talking in German really had me laughing so it gets extra points just for that. The revolver and lasersight is something you MUST find LOL." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"Lara Croft is inside a tomb and has to find her way out. To do this she will have to collect a cartouche to find a revolver and the laser sight to ingeniously destroy the underwater vessels and find a hand. I liked the textures used giving a good atmosphere to the level. I just didn't figure out why did Lara was looking for a high hole in the initial room - she won't ever get there!" - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"It is a 'correct' level, with no errors. One aspect that I have enjoyed especially is that the very first moment there was something, some underwater shatter objects that you think that you must crash but you do not have the way to do it. At the end you are right, you must find the way to do it." - Josep (21-Jun-2002)
"A simple little level with some good puzzles. Lara must navigate three areas reached by climbing three poles. Along the way there are the usual scorpions and zombies with a couple of boulders thrown in for good measure. It's a little straightforward - nothing too taxing although a couple of the pick-ups are hard to see (and one is essential to continue!) Enjoyable and diverting but not too challenging." - David (21-Jun-2002)
"This level will see you on a short journey in search of two hands and the two pieces of the cartouche. Along the way you'll run into some zombies scorpions climbing poles lava spikes and even a boulder or two. Although the usual tutorial textures are used here - the level still has a look all its own and the perfect 'lost in a tomb' atmosphere. I enjoyed this short level and had fun finding all the objects." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"A good level. Nice textures some puzzles and good lighting make this level fine. Some zombies and some scorpions are in the right places. This level is short (29 minutes) but nice to play." - Andi Croft (21-Jun-2002)
"Tomb Survivor is a somewhat small but nonetheless enjoyable level. It's not too hard so that makes it great for me as I am not noted as the fastest tomb raider around. I found it nicely textured and designed with only a couple of paper-thin walls but I can let that go. Lighting was good if a little too light and I enjoyed the camera work. It took me about 40 minutes to play and I didn't die too often. Perhaps a tad too easy for the hardened players but fun." - Staticon (21-Jun-2002)
"After the initial short fly by Lara stands right in the middle of this little tutorial chamber and is looking up at a crawlspace high up the wall. Is this a secret? I wondered. I found no way to reach it from the room itself and so I thought I might come back to this later or reach it from somewhere else but when I stepped into the sunlight only 17 minutes later I already hit the finishing trigger. Quite amazing how many things you do in such a short period. Find two hands two pieces of the cartouche revolver laser sight do some swimming pole climbing master two bouldertraps; a bit of monkey swinging here a bit of shimmying there and the odd jump in between. Nothing to set your pulse racing and though the setting is solid tutorial standard I'm not going back there to find out what's behind that crawlspace Curiosity killed the cat you know. I'm happy enough that I've survived this tomb." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
"Nice little level especially good for a beginning raider. As usual Miss Kroft builds a nicely working level. A little short but 1 quite difficult pick up. It does have you going when you find the 1st hand and excitedly go to place it and find it's not the correct one." - Momster (21-Jun-2002)
