Reviewer's comments
"Ostensibly we’re on the hunt for the secret of Selket, yet there’s not a scorpion in sight to guard it. As in the builder’s debut, no relation can be established between the level itself and its title; it may be vaguely suggestive of a plot, but the level ends abruptly after some 20 minutes with nobody’s secret unveiled, indeed not even any secret in the Tomb Raider sense discovered.
It’s a Catacombs level that plays out in the usual big, boxy and wallpapered rooms connected by unnecessarily long corridors or crawlspaces. To begin with, the builder takes a stab at employing fixed cameras and lighting, but these efforts cease as the level progresses. It starts out in a memorably bad way with no fewer than three consecutive pushable puzzles, the first of which, to make matters worse, takes place in a maze. It’s not a stupid puzzle or a mere chore, but it’s made much more tedious than it needs to be by the distances you have to cover. As I encountered the second, which is merely a variation of the first, I heard myself say out loud ‘you must be joking’; but it turns out that the pushable puzzles get progressively less tedious and also simpler. This makes the gameplay bearable, but not enjoyable. It is enlivened to some degree by a a couple of brief jumping sequences and a few rollingball traps, but the missing sample for the rollingball undercuts the latter’s potential to inject much-needed drama into the proceedings. The skeletons fail at this even harder, as you acquire the grenade gun (and ample ammo for it) the instant you meet the first one. Your last task involves unmarked spike tiles, leaving a particularly bad aftertaste.
The load screen has been fixed, so the level is now playable; but it’s still nothing to write home about. If it’s an improvement over the builder’s debut, it’s a very minor one." - Mulf (22-May-2021)
"This adventure seems a bit linear, it had a few mazes which were quite small and tedious. It gives you the Uzis but nothing that you can shoot with them (or at least what i found) anyway really easy, nothing much to say about it really." - JoeTheCrazyGamer (04-Jan-2019)
"This catacomb level is based only about move objects to get access to levers or buttons. Lineal gameplay, simple architecture, some skeletons to shoot and correct texturization, I missed some cameras and flybys, even when they are not necessary 'cause the triggered objects are usually near from the levers. There is an error near the end, the player doesn't need to swim to the area with many spiked balls; in my case, the exit door automatically opened when running near it. Playable, but not very interesting." - Jose (08-Jan-2018)
"A short, traditional catacomb level. Gameplay mainly involves pushing pillars around mazes and avoiding boulders (I rather liked the underwater ones). Enemies are mostly skeletons but you get a lot of grenade ammo so you can just enjoy blowing them up, or indeed play the old 'how many can I get with one shot' game. Undemanding and unremarkable." - Jay (05-Jul-2017)
"I must have downloaded a new version as mine had a load screen, so whenever I died, it just warped back to the main menu. However, even with that, the level wasn't really that riveting. Some of the boulder traps required some thinking and the one underwater was a nice touch. However, the author completely overdone the pushable objects, one even inside a maze. Some of the rooms are unattractively empty and the textures, although not bad, were a bit unimaginatively applied. It's very much average, but made a bit worse by the long-winded aspects." - Ryan (02-Oct-2016)
"A catacomb level lasting 20 minutes, with pushable objects puzzles, some spiked balls , an easy jumps room above deadly water, and no real threat from the enemies as you get rather soon the grenade gun. The setting is not particularly appealing , rather dark at the beginning but happily turning brighter for the rest of the level. I noticed that the last puzzle with pad tiles and spikes was not necessary, as you can hit the finish trigger without solving it." - eRIC (19-Jan-2009)
"I havent got much to say about this level. Its a pretty standard effort from the early days complete with large rooms, standard enemies and boulder traps. I wasn't bored though and found some nice ideas here but it was annoying having to load the game each time it crashed because of no load screen. i was even unsure that i have finished the level or whether the game had just crashed. I presumed that after entering the crypt at the top of the stairs, you completed the level (cause thats where it kept crashing for me, each time I entered)" - Necro (19-Nov-2008)
"I initially couldn't understand the low marks this level has received,as the first minute or two contains some really nice surprising moments. Very soon, however,it becomes apparent that this level has two major weaknesses: boring push/pull puzzles (one,as if to add insult to injury,in a large maze) and no Load screen. This whole level would very quickly become a tiresome exercise were it not for the entertaining rolling-ball traps;some of which are rather inspired and go a long way in salvaging an otherwise poor level.Everything else is simple and dull." - Orbit Dream (05-Feb-2007)
"A pretty simplistic catacombesque level featuring more pushables than you'd ever want and they're all in mazeish areas. Don't worry looking for a place to push them on to, just get them out of your way. Nothing too impressive over all, but then again, I might be biased because this IS catacomb. The spikes popping out of unmarked grounds and the lack of adequate scrips didn't help, either. 25 minutes. 02/07" - Treeble (01-Feb-2007)
"Ok I've had it with these old levels that have bad textures big empty rooms and no loading screen. Not only that but there is no game play or any big threat skeletons and mummies easily defeated. Push some objects and avoid getting killed by the spike balls or you will be cursing a lot. Better yet just choose something else to play." - Kristina (04-Jul-2003)
"This level was a deception for me. At the beginning it was nice - new Outfit Cameras Sound rolling ball challenge. But then texture errors too much goodies you never will use and you get the impression you've forgotten something. The pull-push-puzzle is boring and overused. Enemies: skeletons waiting to be blown away by the grenade gun. Spikes which only come out one time - maybe for new players. But then I came to the end room - nearby a door - it opened and I was taken to the desktop. Was this all? Second attempt: Underwater-rolling balls and a switch - then the same story. A nice loading makes not a nice Level... Sorry." - Miguel (27-Jan-2003)
"Do you like pushing pillars through a maze? Then you will have the time of your life here. Me I think it's extremely boring (thank God you can squeeze past the pillars). The author states in the readme that this level has very few enemies but a great many traps. They come in the form of spiked boulders and deadly tiles that look pretty harmless. Let me tell you this once and for all: if you build a level based on traps it's absolutely necessary to put in a loadscreen. Here death not only through me back to the desktop but gave me system error number ten as well so I had to reboot my computer every time Lara ran into a trap and that made the whole level pretty unplayable." - Dimpfelmoser (18-Sep-2002)
"A relatively easy Catacomb-Level. In puzzles there was a bit of block pushing otherwise actually nothing worth mentioning. The atmosphere is bright the lighting was almost always the same somehow. Also the textures were arranged boringly. Sound was fitting. Opponents were skeletons which were however no problem thanks to the grenade gun and many many grenades around. There are a few jumps to work well. The level is to be recommended particularly for beginners very much." - Xxenofex (21-Aug-2002)
"The secret in this level may have something to do with push/pull objects because that seems to be all you do in this catacomb style level. There are also some nice traps but each death threw me to desktop which is a very annoying thing that I wish authors would fix. All in all an easy 30 minutes level with no great challenge just watch those traps!" - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Lara is wearing some cool trousers and boots in this 20 minutes run through a rather standard level. Your main task is to avoid a few spike balls and get movable objects out of the way to pull some levers. There are a handful of skeletons and mummies around but as you have the grenade gun they pose no threat." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This is another of those annoying levels that drops you to the desktop every time that Lara dies (hence the low gameplay score). Highlights are Lara's new green camos and I also liked the underwater rolling spike ball trap. Other than that the level was relatively bland running around 20 minutes or so." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"This level is filled with well-done traps which is both good and bad. It's good because the traps aren't the kind where you can see the boulder coming from a mile away and have plenty of time to escape - your reaction time has to be pretty quick. Which is also bad because every time you die which was a lot for me the game crashes back to the desktop and you have to restart the editor. I still enjoyed this level - the pushable object puzzles blowing the skeletons and mummies away the jump over the lava the underwater boulder trap and a beautiful waterfall were some highlights but there was also the problem of some large empty rooms that could have used more puzzles. It looks like the author has some great ideas though and I hope to see another level released." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"This level has been out for some month now and still you get thrown back to your desktop by each death very sloppy. Does this mean that the author is not checking or doesn't care? The level itself is quite easy although the surprises as boulders and spikes do tend to kill Lara -see above- that IS annoying and hinders gameplay in a major way. Lots of movable objects and lots of traps. 09-05-2002" - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"The traps in this level are well done - I died often enough. The textures are very well selected; the ending has flair of the TR3 level - well done! Maybe a little too few enemies but still ok. Mazes are not really my favorite the acrobatic jumping however I liked a lot!" -XETH (21-Jun-2002)
"The level is simple easy to go on. Rooms are very square. Some rooms very big and nothing to do inside. The use of movable objects is too much. There aren't lights. Some textures aren't worked correctly. Rocks fall from roof every time be careful." - Juan Carlos (21-Jun-2002)
