Reviewer's comments
"The real horror here is that the player is forced to exit and re-launch the game each time Lara dies (I had to do it at least a dozen of times). An anodyne and lineal level where you only need to shoot some enemies, avoid a lot of traps (spikes, blades, steam emitters, slicer-dicers, darts...) and sometimes climb ladders to pull levers and open doors. No pickups, very simple architecture with elongated textures and paper walls and a poor atmosphere complete this vulgar level without interest." - Jose (15-Jan-2018)
"Ye gods, what lurid textures. I found them most distracting. This is really just a series of traps to negotiate whilst shooting a few enemies. I see this is the only stab at making a level that this particular builder undertook. Without wishing to sound too mean, that may just have been a good decision." - Jay (07-Nov-2017)
"I assume "horror" refers to the sight that greets you when you load this level up. The textures are abominably stretched to the point of unrecognizability, wallpapered and they gave me a headache. The level is indeed aptly named. There is no atmosphere, the enemies seemed thrown together, there was a "no way out" secret, no end trigger and you crash to the desktop when you die which irritated me greatly. The one positive (if you can call it that) is that the harmless traps provided a slightly hint of amusement. I would leave it well alone and visit a more attractive palace if I were you." - Ryan (01-Aug-2016)
"I dunno whether to make an ironic joke or not towards the very title of this release(considering the overall quality we're dealing with here), but the fact of the matter is that this level, just isn't really any fun to actually play through. And with such awful texturing, lifeless environments, flat lighting, no finish trigger and thrown-in objects/enemies alongside the general lack of a proper design focus at the forefront of the experience, this is one debut Egyptian-themed level that should simply be avoided at all costs." - Ceamonks890 (23-Dec-2014)
"Well,'horror' pretty much sums this one up;but the plethora of (generally harmless) traps does manage to entertain for a short while;and you can't help but feel kindly disposed toward the builder, who is clearly under the impression that it's all rather good. Which it isn't." - Orbit Dream (24-May-2011)
"One point for secrets. Never seen a secret like that - one can choose between getting squashed or stuck forever in the pit... The rest of the level is just a ridiculous show of maximum possible trap density. Traps are everywhere, some of them deadly, another optionally harmful, and the remaining can be passed by easily. It proves the author didn't even think about their placement - he just used all the traps he could find in the settomb.wad and pushed their amount to the object limit. A result is horrifying indeed. But I liked the feeling of enormity of the final abyss, full of slicer-dicers circling down there. My eyes got open wider in that place. "Wow" - I thought. So I decided to give 1 point for the atmosphere. Feeling the space was increased by fine change of sounds, so I also give 1 point for them. SUMMARY: All the people who like chaos and madness of total abstraction should play this level." - DJ Full (26-Oct-2010)
"This level is really the purest horror. One runs here about 15 minutes through gigantic rooms, admires the wallpaper textures and the paper-thin walls and is angry about the absolutely pointless and useless Gameplay. One is accustomed a lot as a player who plays everything, but this level is one that, which can spoil the whole day for one. What does the level builder actually think, if he served such a thing to the players? Does he imagine generally anything in particular? Or does he think "Chief thing, I have cobbled together a level"? Besides crashes one on the desktop, if one wants to load a Savegame or Lara dies. And there is no Finish-Trigger. Better you don't play this thing, if you want to keep your good mood." - Scottie (15-Jun-2009)
"As the title suggests, this level is full of horror. It's basically an egyptian level full of trap after trap. There's no real goal except to just follow where the doors open. There are a lot of stretched textures which suggests that the designer rushed the production of this level but its doesn't alter the gameplay. There was a lot of action to keep you busy. One thing that really annoyed me about this level is that if you needed to load a level, or if you died, the program crashed to the desktop because the load camera settings mustn't have been set right in the script.txt. This could have been a real promising level if a bit more effort was involved." - Necro (20-Nov-2007)
"The whole level is about getting through traps, but they not even hard. Plus a few dogs bats and scorpions. There is no end trigger, and from the secret we can't get out. Only streched textures on the walls, and mostly they were put next to each other as if randomly, the result is positively ugly. I could get around the load bug by renameing the tr4 file of the level to tut1, and playing with the original english and script dat files, that way you can load as usual. Although I reckognise the idea of making an obstacle course level, but this one was done poorly, I recommend the final level of Recon Labs 3 instead." - Akcy (10-Nov-2007)
"Well...in this level we are confronted by trap after trap after trap and then maybe an enemy is thrown in for good measure. The look of the level is appalling with the colours out of whack and the textures are stretched. The level design is not much better with traps randomly placed and some of the traps being far too hard and far too many. Without going into much details on what is wrong with this level, all I will say is, it's just a bad level. However, if you like seriously hard challenges and that's it, this is your level. If I had to give this level a grade, I would give it an E+, a fail mark." - The Aussie Adventurer (03-Mar-2005)
"This is one of those levels that's so strewn with traps that you imagine the author was in a bad mood and created a level just hear how often Lara died. On the other hand it's an author who is going for a complete challenge non of our old block pushing or key finding stuff here. But in the end despite all the obstacles it's quite a linear and fairly easy run through. I have to say though and I won't mention textured as it would be just too cruel that I did like the big slicer blade traps." - CC (04-Oct-2004)
"I suppose the name of this level is appropriate because this level is more or less an abomination from the depths of hell. The textures are stretched the author didn't put a finishing trigger the rooms are huge they are badly lit the traps are placed at random and the load screen parameters are incorrect (if you die there is a 'double death' where tomb4.exe crashes). The traps and the jackal are positioned in such a way that you think that you are in a mad house instead of a palace. Maybe the palace only exists in the fantasies of a madman who urgently needs a tranquilizer so that he could organize his ideas instead of throwing them into one bug pile. The slicer dicers the boulders the spikes the jackal the blades the lava and a few pits make you want to laugh like a hyena for a short period of time although I haven't had this effect at all." - Sakusha (15-Aug-2004)
"Why should someone name his Level so? Easy to explain - should have the name Level of Horror; the Textures are stretched so much colours of horror for your eyes. You meet dogs bats traps and teeth spikes... some knifes..Later more Horror because of the bad Script - you will fly out to the Desktop every time you die - even if you try to load between. Finish trigger does not fit and the whole game is not funny. You can throw it away and not even talk about it." - Miguel (31-Mar-2003)
"Another level reviewed just to get this out of my system. Does it sound horrible wait till you see this horror level. Gameplay consist of traps textures are stretched and I found them rather ugly. Enemies bats and dogs and also some scorpions. No loading screen so you crash to your desktop every time you die and also no end trigger. Oh well I had some fun getting through all the traps. 17-01-2003" - Gerty (18-Jan-2003)
"Well I really have no words to explain my ratings. The level was quite boring for me and I was very un-happy to know there's no finish trigger (at least I didn't find one and I found an area that I believe was supposed to be the final room). There are a lot of objects simply dropped around badly used and the textures are really UGLY! Man this level had a lot of strange textures randomly applied on to the whole surfaces! :P" - Treeble (21-Dec-2002)
"This 15 minute sweep of traps dogs bats and scorpions should be titled 'Let's See How Many Times Lara Can Die and Drive the Player Crazy When the Game Crashes to the Desktop Each Time'. What a farce. You face a spectrum of slicer/dicers revolving spiked thingies and spikes all the while trying to run your way through repetitive rooms listening to irritating incessant music with dogs and bats on your heels and coming at you with a few scorpions thrown in for good measure. I know this was a 'run on' sentence but what can I say it's effective lol." - Momster (23-Aug-2002)
"In this level you have 15 minutes of running through very unattractively textured square rooms avoiding loads of bizarrely placed traps and shooting some dogs bats and scorpions that never really pose a threat to end at the top of a set of stairs with no end trigger. I did have a bit of fun getting through the not so difficult traps and the floating sand platforms were cool but this is really just a novelty level and so I couldn't take it at all serious." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Only 13 rooms and with rather bad and not very moody lighting and long stretched and repetitive texturing in huge rooms. What makes it still worth playing the quick 15 minutes episode is the sequence of blades rotating wheel blades spikes steam fire dogs scorpions bats rolling balls and darts that presumably were meant to create the 'Horror' here but are actually rather harmless." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This novelty level is full of rotating blades falling boulders fire spikes bottomless pits and darts - with an odd lever to find with nothing more serious than some bats and dogs to combat (one secret which once entered you couldn't get out of). The most annoying thing about this level was that when Lara died (which she did often) the game crashed to the desktop meaning a reload and the end was confusing as there was no end trigger. This was a good idea really that just wasn't executed as it should." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"If you really like obstacle courses then this level is for you. It's basically one long obstacle course full of blades boulders fire spikes pits and darts - occasionally pulling a lever or two and shooting a bat or a dog with your pistols (no pickups here - or objects or secrets either). I thought the music and camera angles were used well to add to the excitement already there but I think I would have enjoyed this more had different textures been used. These were just too loud and didn't seem to fit well together. The fact that there was no end trigger and that the game crashes to the desktop every time you die (and in a game like this!) was especially annoying. This level was a good idea I just thought it could have been done better." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"It was quite horrible. Huge empty rooms with traps and blades in the air not of any threat. Bats and dogs all over the place and a few scorpions. The textures are terribly placed and distorted not to mention totally incompatible. I was expecting to see an Egyptian palace or something dark with many enemies and traps but I saw nothing that could interest anyone. Some levers to push and climbing blocks and that's all or at least I think it is because there is no finishing trigger." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"It's a fair first level. Gameplay: avoiding many traps (slicing blades smoke emitters spiked balls and others) in very huge rooms. Puzzles: pushing some levers. Pickups: one (flares). Secrets: none. Enemies: that's alright nothing horrible. Sound and Cameras: rather good. Textures: well not very well chosen and too colourful. Just a few more words: no end trigger and the game crashes to the desktop when you reload. Come on Andy you can improve several things in your next level!" - eRIC (21-Jun-2002)
"Of course the textures are stretched to the maximum and seem to be placed at random; the gameplay is so linear and obvious that it isn't very satisfying and the assorted health hazards and traps don't make much sense but still somehow the whole thing is rather sweet in its innocence You can see what the author wanted and where he failed. You become aware that some things you hitherto took for granted apparently need to be seen to by the level builder. You suddenly realise that a gloomy atmosphere is better than no atmosphere at all. Having said that the gameplay isn't that bad actually and the run and jumps over the floating cardboard near the end was kind of fun. But instead of just throwing poisonous darts the big blades spikes the rotating slicer steam vents and what not into one big room it would have been more effective if some thought had gone into the placement of those elements. The only chance of dying you get is if you laugh yourself to death. But that's pretty horrible isn't it?!" - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
"Horror is the correct description. The thing looks horrible but not completely in a bad way. The textures are applied in a very unique way. But in this case it fits. The level is full of traps of all different kinds. The baddies are good in my opinion. I've never been attacked by a bat a dog and a scorpion at once. The really annoying thing was that the level crashed when you died or when you tried to reload during game. I like traps so this level was fun to play for me not everybody might enjoy it." - Tombraidergirl (21-Jun-2002)
