Reviewer's comments
"So short at 10 minutes (can't rate higher for that matter) yet so good. Egyptian adventure with a mix ot TR1/TR4 textures and objects with Atlantean references. Every building category is well done in here, it is like a demo of what good classic raiding is. I like the Jackal statue and the placement of enemies and objects (the mini waterfalls in the mouth of the cat textures for exemple)." - eRIC (18-Sep-2019)
"I have such a fondness for those TR1 Egypt textures, with the beautiful blue and gold colours so I'm always pleased to see them again. At not much more than ten minutes of gameplay it's obviously difficult to rate with any accuracy, but I do wonder why Justin never took it any further. I think it would have been rather good." - Jay (18-Apr-2018)
"As a demo, this ends very abruptly (and before something exciting by the look of it), but the atmosphere and environments are well crafted if a little dark, there's a hint of a puzzle with a few torches and enemies are nicely placed. It's a pity that the full version was never released." - Ryan (06-Oct-2017)
"A pity this never came to a full level, for now it is over before you know it, so short. Oh well, luckily he made much more levels you can enjoy." - Gerty (14-Aug-2017)
"It seems an enjoyable level, but too short to give high ratings. The environment is too dark for my taste, but the texturization is excellent. An easy task with the torch, I've got problems to climb the ivy covered wall. Well placed enemies, good that the shotgun appears soon to deal with the hard to kill atlantean enemy (ahmet?). A pain that this author never released the final version." - Jose (04-Jul-2016)
"This is a 12-minute tidbit aptly dubbed as a demo, but I think it's the best-looking of Justin's early levels. The lighting and the surrounding textures provide a totally immersive atmosphere, and I wish there'd been more to do here. The enemies are the eponymous jackals and an assortment of other critters. Anya Marie McDonald and I wrote a walkthrough and didn't find any secrets. An enjoyable little teaser." - Phil (30-Apr-2015)
"It's a well made little level;contains a rather impressive Jackal statue, some good atmosphere and enjoys a neat progression from 'standard Tomb' to 'rather scary place' (with one really effective fright moment) but it ends just as it's starting to go somewhere interesting.Never mind." - Orbit Dream (23-Feb-2008)
"A little adventure with shorter haired TR1 model Lara, in a mostly TR1 enviroment. Many of the textures, some of the enemies are also from there. The Atlantean zombi centaurs used to give the creeps, but here they won't come alive. Not much to do, just get the torch, a Sands of Time, few switches and kills, but it's just a demo. Now it seems, it will never be finished, too bad, it's promising." - Akcy (08-Nov-2006)
"This is a short level but this is only a demo. You have to find the torch above behind the statue but you need to pull some levers before. The Timeless Sands is hidden in a box. The enemies are jackals crocs scorpions and a monster in the end. You will find the Shotgun in one of the sarcophagus. There are no added sounds. I hope it will be continued." - Obig (18-May-2003)
"As this is a demo it took me only 10 minutes and 10 seconds to finish it. It was quite easy and there were not many puzzles and the ones that were there were just too simple but I liked the placement of the torch. I guess it's the TR1 Lara we're playing with here so if it is I can stop wondering from where did she get one of the old Madonna's bras. It was a bit dark for me in some places and I would've loved to fight the Centaurs here but that skinless beast was quite scary so I think it makes up for it. The demo is nice and I have really no complaints. Looking forward for the full version." - eTux (26-Aug-2002)
"This is a 10 minute demo and as such I must say I am surprised at some of the other scores it has received. There's nothing hard here though there is something startling and that would be the Atlantean mutant that sprung from out of nowhere other than that there are some levers and a torch puzzle and then a flyby ends the demo. You can tell however that the atmosphere and texturing will be fantastic in the full level and it would be even better if somehow Justin could get those centaur like mutant statues to be actual enemies but just as I know I will never fill Wembley Stadium singing ever so slightly off key versions of Sheena Easton's classics (does she have any classics?!?) I know that those mutants will stay merely statues but I can wish....'My baby takes the morning train he works from nine till five and then....'" - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Quick 15 minutes demo in 30 rooms. I did not like the 'old' Lara and her hairdo too much and in this nicely textured small area there is not much to do other than pulling a few levers solving an obvious torch puzzle and pushing a block in. But as a demo it shows a lot of promise and that rebuilt ahmet was scary." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"As a sequel to Lair of the Jackals this level was very different from what I was waiting to see. Though I still prefer the first this demo shows some promise. The best parts on this level are the huge jackal statue (better than the one in the first level) and the Atlantean rooms. Ok it's true that the huge yellow ball didn't free another Atlantean crawler but the crawler that comes right after it's scary! Nice demo but too short (15 minutes)." - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"This level is a time travel! A travel back to 1996 in the very good times of Tomb Raider 1. The puzzles of this short demo are very similar to the puzzles of the Egyptian levels from that game. But as a demo I have to say some things to the author to make the full version better: makes the level a little brighter (I know a tomb is very dark but a videogame doesn't need to be completely real does it?); and don't use the TR1 skin (I prefer the 'beautiful' Lara from TR4). I think that's all. The rest of this level is quite nice. Waiting for the full version! :)" - Leandro (21-Jun-2002)
"First of all I can't wait to see the finished level and I know justin will come through for us unlike many authors that put out demos then never seem to come through with the finished product. I always look forward to justin's levels though because I know I can expect something new that hasn't been done before and I can also expect some excitement. If the finished level is like the demo I can already tell it is going to be really creepy. Seeing the statues of the centaur mummies brought back a few memories and the pulsating orb that I was expecting at any moment to burst open and some unimaginable creature to jump out and get me only to have that creature attack me only moments later! There are no hard puzzles though I'm expecting to see them in the final version (just no timed doors ok?) and there were few other enemies just a few dogs and a croc. There was a door near the beginning that had a dog behind it and I never figured out how to open that door which drove me crazy. This was a lot of fun to play and I wish it had lasted longer than fifteen minutes." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"This level was short but very sweet. The lighting and textures were really very good. Justin shows time and time again that he has great talent. The whole thing gave an atmosphere of cold and dampness! If he wrote a full length version of this I'm sure the marking would be extremely high. Load this one now." - Doug E (21-Jun-2002)
"Given the fact that this is a demo it looks promising. Although the game play could use some improvement. The textures are well placed an Egyptian level but you already know that from the title. Not much to start with you can collect the Sands of Time solve the torch puzzle and there is a room with another artifact that I couldn't access. A few dogs and a beast are your enemies. The cameras are good the flyby at the end lets you get a glimpse of what will follow in the full version I hope we will see it and the atmosphere gives you that gloomy feeling inside a pyramid or cave like. Lighting is also good and my impression for someone that's tired of Egyptian levels was very good. It's short but interesting with Lara from TR1.Give it a try." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I suppose it's a tribute to TR1 and truth been told that isn't my favourite part of Lara's history. Also I'm not absolutely certain how to rate a demo. True this took me nearly 20 minutes which is longer than some other levels I cunningly downloaded recently to get ahead of Torry. Alright it starts rather harmless with a couple of levers a jumpswitch and an obvious torch puzzle (though it took me some time to locate the crucial item). But soon after that things get a bit nasty. The highpoint being confrontation with the mutant. Gave me quite a shock. It looked vaguely familiar but I haven't seen the likes of it in ages. Probably imported from TR1 as well. It all ends far to soon with a tantalizing fly by. What can I say I pray to a God I don't believe in that the proper version will be playable for the common Mac User." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
"All I can say is WOW. I loved the baddy at the end It was cool and the two statues at the end too very realistic. The author has managed to put the TombRaider 1 Lara in the level and also her bullets and her guns. I loved the fire puzzle where you had to light the 4 fire holders for the doors to open. Very clever (How do you do that) Maybe a reviewer can tell me. Anyway brilliant demo I completed it in just under 12 minutes but great fun to play. The full version is going to be a hit I can tell. Justin make sure you create a full version because I most certainly will download it and review it. Brilliant demo the best demo I have played on!" - TombRaiderFan (21-Jun-2002)
