Reviewer's comments
"I can't just recall ever having driven the jeep around in the tree branches before; it turned out to be an interesting experience. This is cleverly designed and, if you like driving the jeep, it is quite a lot of fun as you negotiate tight passages, riverbanks and the aforementioned treetops, running over a variety of enemies on your way, finding secret trigger tiles and counting 'Dead Tonys' ! Rotten driver though I undoubtedly am, I actually rather enjoyed myself with this one." - Jay (20-Feb-2018)
"If you're a petrolhead, then you'd better step right up. This entire level consists of one extended Jeep ride around a well made jungle course in search of six optional trigger tiles to open the door to a little secret area (I only managed at least four or five so couldn't access it). You can stop if you wish to pick up items but you'll not need them if you don't explore on foot. Not a puzzling level as such, more one to play if you like vehicles, but I actually felt that the looped action music helped this time rather than hindered." - Ryan (30-Oct-2017)
"Not agree with this design. Players will think that there's a nice or dangerous ride with the jeep but it isn't. The architecture is good, also the new textures and all those "enemies" you can kill with the vehicle. But that grey tiles for all the secrets add confusing to the gameplay, and when you reach the end with the finish message, still there is more work and no hints to show you the way to get the finish trigger so I had to take a look to Phil's walkthrough. Recommended only for that players who love the drives with vehicles." - Jose (27-Jun-2016)
"A really impressive race level. The best I have played until now, I think. With a convincing atmosphere that was created by building nice temple entrances, tree areas and good textures, this made the good setting for this race. We have to find six grey tiles (yes, each of them), the four hardest of them even counted as secrets, with the jeep and do quite a lot of varied tasks while still driving. Although the boulder traps weren't really lethal, I found them and the enemies quite well arranged. Monkeys, tigers, cannibals from TR 3, more gunmen and crocodiles that quite fit to the setting you can find here. The race was never too hard, well the tree area kept you a while as the safe way is really narrow. I have to critisize some tiles did not fully work as secrets (unless this was intended?), and secret 4 could be gained without finding the fitting trapdoor. But all in all much fun the overall 5 minutes it lasted. Plus, you get a nice prize at the end..." - manarch2 (29-Jun-2011)
"A nice little level only lasting around 6 minutes for the first time I played it, although it does have a lot of replay value. It builds up a nice jungle atmosphere and the tree was built incredibly well. Enemies were tigers, monkeys and guards. It was textured nicely and thus made a good atmosphere. The boulder traps were well built and I think that this is an incredibly good race level." - Cory (22-Feb-2009)
"This is a pleasant little level that shouldn't unduly tax the skills of any of us. Some of the reviews say you can do the whole thing without ever getting out of the Jeep, but I don't recommend playing it that way. Half the fun is exploring ahead on foot and gaining insight into what's going to happen next, and even though you can't really make use of the pickups they're there to be had if you're a completist by nature. I played this one for the purpose of writing a walkthrough, although I suppose "drivethrough" would be a more accurate description. Your goal is to locate and drive over six gray tiles to open up a secret area at the end and give you a proper finish trigger. (If you finish the Jeep course without finding the secret area, you're congratulated on a job well done and that's it.) There are also golden tiles that must be run over to open doors and lift trapdoors so you can continue. Thorough exploration time is about 30 minutes, and the few enemies you encounter are dispatched by running over them or simply allowing them to rush forward and self-destruct on the Jeep. An added attraction, if you want to call it that, is a quintet of Dead Tonys impaled on knives that you're supposed to count as you progress. Reminds me of the game we used to play as kids on boring road trips, counting cows or some such to help kill time. Don't remember any Dead Tonys on those trips. Anyway, you'll enjoy this one if you haven't already played it." - Phil (12-Mar-2006)
"For those of you out there who avidly read all the reviews I have ever written I have two things to say. 1) What good taste. 2) I once wrote a review where I said 'There is no reason why there shouldn't be a 'Lara Racing' level but that a decent one hasn't yet been built'; or words to that effect. And it is now time for me to humbly retract my previous comments and inform you that a good 'Lara Racing' level has indeed been built and this is it! All the logistical problems of gameplay which simply involves bashing a Motorbike around corners have been ironed out and we have been presented with a highly entertaining occasionaly difficult but always enjoyable game; a game where careful control of the Bike is an essential part of the game as many of the acrobatics and maneuvres that you are asked to perform trigger events that enable you to progress. And while you are bumping and jumping your way around don't forget also to appreciate the scenery. So much detail has been put in simply to create atmosphere. Lovely stuff." - Orbit Dream (26-Apr-2003)
"This is just one of the funniest levels available so far. It's another racing level and wow it's very cool! Nice textures don't bore you while you're making your way through the jungle and even if there wasn't anything else other than race through the jungle it was VERY fun. I recommend this level for all the jeep freaks (like me) and to the TombRaiders that are fed up with the Egyptian tomb levels! Congratulations Jaxx and I am looking for your next level :)" - Treeble (19-Aug-2002)
"This is one for the people out there who have been on their feet all day long it's a jeep level set in the jungle. And although you can get out to pick up a few things including a well hidden weapon there is no real need to as there are trigger tiles through the level that when run over open gates and lift trapdoors so you can progress there are also certain other tiles the author says 5 but I had to run over 6 (thanks to Halcyon for pointing out the sixth) that when driven over open up an area where you will find a golden rose and the genuine level end. This took me 15 minutes to finish and is a really fun little place to visit and just to answer Jaxx's question in the readme I found 5 dead Tonys!" - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"A pure fun level with a couple of nice twists. You start by picking up the Jeep keys and the instructions for this level and off you go with the Jeep through a cool Jungle setting trying to find the grey and golden tiles to run over. You don't actually ever have to step out of the Jeep if you don't want to and it is easy to kill the tigers tribal men and poor monkeys by simply running over them. Not so easy it is to avoid all the spikes and boulder traps and I died quite a few times. The road sign textures and the filling station made me smile too. Try this one for some fun diversion - sadly it is actually rather short (about 15 minutes) even if you drive the routes back and forth a bit so the rather beautiful scenery is a little wasted." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This is not so much a race but a jungle expedition in the Landrover and you had better have good driving skills because the course is tricky and full of traps. Although I managed to get through in 14 minutes the number of reloads were countless. Now I loved the fill up station and the dead 'Tony's' hanging on the wall (saw 3 only) but never found the golden rose but did find a secret just before the finish line. This is a lot of fun and a departure from the norm and the author deserves a higher score for his ingenuity." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"You get to drive the jeep through a jungle drive over the golden tiles and you can finish. Drive over the grey ones and you find a secret area. Tigers monkeys and tribal men are easily killed with the jeep. An average level that gives you a fun ride through the jungle." - G.Croft (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a race level. So what should you expect from it? A 10 minutes adventure where all that Lara needs to do is ride her a jeep and drive. This kind of level is really fun but this one could be better. Want an excellent jeep ride in a jungle to play? Download 'Deep in the Jungle' and play the second level. This one here is good but not excellent." - Leandro (21-Jun-2002)
"I was quite surprised when I first loaded this up and realized it was just a long obstacle for the jeep. It has been brilliantly done though and is filled with clever ideas and traps. I liked the signs that marked the beginning and the end as well as the signs scattered throughout that tell you what direction to go. The jungle looked just right and was the perfect setting for this as part of the course takes you over and by a couple of croc infested rivers and through the branches of two very large trees. There are also boulder traps lava pits spikes and some enemies triggered only by the jeep - tigers monkeys guards and I was so excited to see the headhunters from the jungle levels of TR III - I hope we see much more of them now. I actually played this twice because there is a golden rose secret you can only get by driving over six grey tiles and I only found five the first time. I hate to leave anything unfinished so I just had to try again. I also found all five dead Tony's the second time because two you can only find in the area with the golden rose. There were a few health packs scattered around some ammo and the AK-47 near the end but I never used any of them. This is the best obstacle course for the jeep I've ever seen it was a great idea and is fun enough to play over and over again. Good work Jaxx!" - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Just drive that jeep. It sounds easier than it is done at least for me. I'm not a fan of vehicles and I like to do everything on foot as well. But there is that compromise drive a bit get out and explore where you have to drive next. At least in that way you can enjoy the scenery. Found so many pathways on foot and I'm sure I never got every one in that jeep. Still a question remains why do the monkeys explode? That gas station was great to see and I loved the road signs. Found four dead Tony's (yuck) and got the rose. This is a game I saved almost at every corner and reloading over and over again but it was fun nonetheless. Would like to have more flares as using the binoculars is boring but that is what you get if you insist on doing this level on foot as well. 24-05-2002" - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"This level isn't one of the typical TR kind but it's a clever idea. Lara has to make her way through the jungle by jeep in a kind of cross-country-race. That sounds simple but it's heavy in some places. Time doesn't matter but the passages are narrow and you have to pay attention to keep the jeep on the track. You can find the Desert Eagle and some ammo on your way but you don't really need it as you have the jeep to get rid of the enemies. BTW: I am so sorry for all the dear monkeys I killed." - Sheevah (21-Jun-2002)
"There is nothing more than a jeep race well not exactly. There is no one chasing you. The goal is to find the grey squares and access a secret area. Now there are some tiles with golden skulls in them that represent normal puzzles. That's not my idea of a puzzle though there is no challenge in that or interest for that matter. For enemies you get natives and soldiers but again no fun because you can easily run over them with the jeep. I did like the jungle scenery with the water all around in some parts and all that greenish with the passages hidden in leafs is always appealing to me. While you are in the quest for the secret squares boulders are coming down on you also spikes in many areas and you have to maneuver in narrow spaces. An interesting part was the tree route and a tricky one of course which the player has to carefully pass from all the golden squares that open a door up. It is a nice idea and the big letters at the start and end of the level were nice too they indicate START and FINISH along with a big sign that reads WELL DONE. I will say the same but if the puzzles were a little more complex I would have added the word very in that sign about this level." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"You don't have to leave the car during this one. The revolver ammo is pretty useless. Ok it's a brave effort to come up with something out of the ordinary and the course created for the car is pretty creative but the problem is that TR is not a Race game and it's just lacks the dynamics of the rallies we're used to. So bearing in mind that this game is devoid of jumps swims runs crawls monkeyswings battles and puzzles it's still fairly entertaining. Mind you it won't take you very long to reach the finish. But I must have missed a Secret tile I guess. The setting is quite good but since you speed past you only get a detailed look at the flora and fauna when you're crashing into some pools or pits. You have to maneuver carefully over trees and around creeks avoid some boulders and accelerate over streams and spikes. I don't know if it's a bug but in one area Lara doesn't die when the car explodes in the water; she just sits there in mid air swinging to a beat of her own and shifting gears that are no longer there. Quite hilarious. All in all this is a nice diversion from the usual stuff so you should give it a try." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
