Reviewer's comments
"My initial impression of this level wasn't the best, what with Lara into what might be the sewer system of this small town having to wade through darkness with a crocodile swimming around — fortunately you can gun him down before he even gets to you. It took a few levers to finally get to surface level where things started to look up, but not much. I always found the official London textures to be very hard to make sense of, and this town has you going in and around four different buildings which make no sense whatsoever. Of course this is me being harsh on the author when really all of this comes down to the engine limitations, but my point is that atmosphere felt quite non-descript here. It's a city because we have to make believe it is. Gameplay involved quite a few tasks as you hunted down several diamonds scattered around the level, but on a general note I think we could have benefitted from more camera hints (not sure there was any, now that I think about it) once there are quite a few doors, and the pushblock puzzle towards the end became tedious before I finally made it past it, but I admit I liked the concept. 40 minutes, 3 secrets. 09/20" - Treeble (20-Sep-2020)
"Lara starts this level in a sewer being approached by two strategically placed crocodiles and wearing a fetching costume that I am assuming she chose personally for her role as "Diamonds Raider". This isn't a very confusing level - there are a few large areas but generally everything is quite simple. Simple but fun gameplay with a few levers, a sphere to shoot with Revolver and Lasersight and a well thought out block puzzle. Rather clashing texturing, but I still thought it managed to work." - Ryan (28-Apr-2017)
"Not huge areas to explore here, but a central outside part of a city and numerous adjacent buildings. Even so, the gameplay is obscure, 'cause sometimes you pull switches or levers to open very distant doors and there are not camera shots to guide the player so, in that cases you'll be totally disoriented. The tasks are easy, only pull some switches, shoot a ball and a very interesting puzzle with moveable blocks near the end; that puzzle was for me the best of the game. The secrets are very easy to find, and they will give you enough pickups to deal with the soldiers and light your way. Odd texturization, applying different textures in the same surfaces which often don't fit, but not too bad. Lights are well worked. Enjoyable." - Jose (01-Sep-2016)
"By sheer coincidence the last two levels I've selected have been gem quests (6 in the first Tarragona release and 9 here). However, I had a far better time with this one, even though it's much less renowned and doesn't have the reputation associated with a signature builder. There's plenty of light so you can see what you're doing, you have some wide open spaces to move around in and aren't constantly crawling around in tunnels, and there are some interesting puzzles thrown in for good measure. My playing time was right at one hour, and although you get no reward for finding all nine gems (at least that was the number documented in Obig's walkthrough), you get a well-rounded gaming experience that gave me considerably more satisfaction than the higher-rated Tarragona level. Recommended." - Phil (04-Jun-2015)
"I was just admiring Lara's outfit for a second - a mixture between Ninja warrior and Mrs Zeta-Jones in the movie 'Entrapment' - when a crocodile already bit her leg. Monsieur le Createur didn't overdo action after this initial shock though. There is time enough to watch and think. The textures look a bit randomly applied - a blue one here a green one there. The strength of the level is clearly the gameplay not the pictures or sound. The story line is simply to collect as many diamonds as you can although they are not needed for a task within the game here." - Rüdiger (02-Nov-2003)
"I'm assuming Lara's rather strange get-up is intended to make her look like a Burglar thus substantiating the somewhat more accurate translation of the level as 'Thief of diamonds'. Whatever it's a fast moving little adventure chock-full of interest which sees Lara infiltrating a well planned out and constructed little City on the hunt for the valuable jewels of the title. There are perhaps rather too few heavies guarding the valuables but they are well placed (including the two crocs at the start); and the tasks are fun and fast moving (including a block-pushing puzzle that is far less convoluted than it appears at first glance). It is only the somewhat eclectic texturing that lets this down a little as I never found the City atmosphere terribly convincing. Overlook that and you'll find this Level to be as much of a Gem as those of Lara's quest." - Orbit Dream (22-Sep-2003)
"Before you have time to think where you are immediately draw pistols to shoot a crocodile swimming towards you. Now you can see you're standing in a sewer. Lara has a diving wetsuit on including the headcover which only allows you to see her eyes. I somehow never got used to this throughout the level. Anyway she must open three underwater doors to come up on a city street. This city looks totally unconvincing the textures are just pasted on any old how. Aside from that there's a lot to do here. Climbing shimmying shooting a metal ball finding a pyramid key and a key to open the big double doors into a building under which is a terrible looking jump sequence over lava but it's not difficult. There is a large room that looks interesting with rope wall switches ledges blue double doors to open and a trapdoor. And an even bigger room but all you see are the outside corridors and four doors inside are blocks to be moved so can get into a water maze. All this is to get 'diamonds'. Are there such things as blue diamonds? And I haven't the foggiest idea how many I got because my game didn't count them and neither did I. She ends up in the sewers again at the end. Took me 1:07 hours to play." - CC (08-Aug-2003)
"With SAS and the occasional croc to battle Lara finds herself in a small city on the hunt for the most important find in her small but illustrious career a girls best friend diamonds. Now there was no way that Lara wasn't going to make it out alive with the 9 diamonds on offer here I mean have you ever tried to stand in the way of a woman and a diamond yes it's not pretty. This in the end is an exploring level through the cities buildings and not really a puzzler although at the end you come across what looks like a complicated block puzzle that I have to say is well put together but it is actually very simple and only a sprinkling of the blocks need to be moved. With 3 secrets to find and about 45 minutes of play this was an enjoyable visit to the small city but maybe a little too straightforward for my tastes." - Sash (18-May-2003)
"The 'diamonds' referred to in the title of this level are actually the nine gems that Lara is after. She must first search a series of underwater tunnels a small section of a city with a few side trips and doors to open and finally solve an intricate pushable block puzzle before she finds all nine of the diamonds. I kept expecting to come across the receptacles to use my new little treasures but apparently they are for Lara to keep and take home. Nothing difficult here but there are three secrets at least some good jumps and keep an eye out for that brass ball to shoot - it's hard to see." - RaiderGirl (31-Mar-2003)
"Quite a suitable outfit indeed for the occasion. Lara infiltrates a little City area through the sewers and steals 9 diamonds in this 50 minutes quest. There are a few bats SAS and crocodiles to battle I found only two of the three secrets and you get a Silver Key and a guardian key (optional) for progression around the central area. The lava pool looked good and there are a few traps (boulders slicer dicer) a rope and most notably an interesting movable block puzzle and it is really over very quickly but still good fun while it lasted." - Michael (15-Mar-2003)
"A reasonably good little level which makes you think and look round. Start being eaten by a croc - draw and shoot ASAP. Wade and swim to start with and eventually find your way to the 'square'. One by one you will open the gates and collect the diamonds (I got 8-don't know which one I missed). The odd SAS guy tries to stop you. End by sorting out the block puzzle. One hint - why have you got the gun sight. Good sewer atmosphere to start and a reasonable mix of light and dark sections. Atmosphere could have been improved with better sounds. The textures vary without great repeats as you go through the level. Definitely worth a play" - Whistle (13-Mar-2003)
"This is an hours worth of looking for diamonds. Set in some streets there are some underground bits to visit and a little climbing. There are crocs to shoot in the sewers and the odd sprinkling of SAS men. I found all the diamonds (I assume) and the level ended before I got a chance to use them. Textures are not bad but there was one gate that was still shut even though the game ended. I would look forward to a more challenging level in the future." - Doug E (10-Mar-2003)
"The beginning is totally unfair as Lara is bitten by two crocs even before she can have a look around. Lara is wearing a new outfit and half way through I thought how can she breath properly but hey this is a game. Staring in a sewer like environment Lara has to do some swimming to find levers that will give her entrance to a small town. Climbing jumping shimmying will give access to parts of the buildings. Main goal are 9 diamonds and she battles in the town with some soldiers. You need to find the revolver and lasersight as there is a ball to shoot. Most tedious thing I encountered was the block pushing puzzle. For the rest I had a ball. Found 3 secrets. 07-03-2003" - Gerty (09-Mar-2003)
"A good level where we see Lara in sewers at the beginning and then coming outside in a little city where she has puzzles to solve before returning again in sewers at the end. On her way she has stolen 9 blue gems (that's the goal of the level: finding the maximum of blue gems) and found 3 secrets. There is not a lot of enemies a couple of hungry crocs bats and some SAS but the puzzles are good but not difficult and give one hour of net gaming time." - eRIC (09-Mar-2003)
"In this level you must find 8 blue gems. The main location is a mixture of city with an hint of Venice and castle. Lara is wearing a mask all the time ninja style. The game is very nice and smooth and relaxing I didn't find any particular difficulty jumps are easy and puzzles not very demanding but not too obvious. Textures are well done and well placed with no bugs to stop your game. Enemies are not too much guards mainly no big monsters and you can survive with the ammos you find that are not too much. A few medipacks around just to survive (I ended my game with 4 small and one big left). Not too much fantasy but a very good level anyway a very pleasant way to spend an hour and a half (that's the time it took me to finish it) ...Well done!" - Glow (09-Mar-2003)
"A little more than an hour of game play. At first the level looks like catacombs but the areas are very narrow and small. Then the scenery changes completely and you're in a city a bright one with buildings all around. Your goal is to collect diamonds I have no idea what for though as I found nine of them with no use. Also found three secrets. The puzzles are simple at first jumping from slope to slope in a lava room push buttons levers and open doors plus avoid death from stargates. SAS guards and a couple of crocodiles at the beginning are the enemies in the level. The last puzzle is with moving blocks you have to get them out of the way and collect the last diamond to finish the level. Lighting and textures are good enough but the windows textures at the buildings could have been better they looked a little bizarre the way they placed. Lara's outfit was interesting she is wearing a hoot. Give it a try." - Kristina (07-Mar-2003)
"This is a great level. You start in a channel fighting with 2 crocs. After getting the first diamond the story continues in a district of a town. The objective is to getting the diamonds. I found 9 diamonds and 3 secrets. There are 2 crocs some soldiers and 2 bats in the end to be fighting with. The puzzles are not particularly difficult: couple of jumps some block-pushing and you have to find the levers for opening the doors. There are no added sounds but the textures are good and I didn't find bugs in the level." - Obig (07-Mar-2003)
"Lara has the task to find nine diamonds and first you need to solve a little puzzle in the sewers. Then you enter a city where you have a lot to do. Puzzles are easy but there is a pushable object puzzle where you need to think a bit. Other than that lots of switches and levers to use. I found 2 Secrets. Textures are well done although you need to get used to them. Enemies are guards crocodiles and a few bats. The atmosphere was nice and Lara's outfit was very suitable - something different :-) Lara finds the diamonds but cannot really use them so maybe there will be a sequel. Looking forward to it. Recommended." - Engelchen Lara (06-Mar-2003)
