Valeria Messalina's Lair

You
drop down a shaft and land in water. Swim north and use your medipacks by the spikes. Enter the north underwater tunnel and pick up a small medipack. Continue swimming and follow the underwater tunnel as it twists and turns. It is not a maze. Pull up at the end and kill a crocodile. Go north and overlook a slope and a water pool. The bottom of the slope is a spike trap. The water to the left side of the slope is deadly. Slide down the slope and jump to the right side and into the water to avoid the spike ball rolling behind you. Swim into the open tunnel in the south wall. You pull up into a room and face a floor of fire. Sprint through the fire and you ignite. Fall into the water trench at the east end to put out the flames.

 

Swim north to a junction. Notice that the tunnel ahead is very short. Swim west and down a hole to get a small medipack. Return to the trench for air. Swim back and go to the east. Follow the tunnel and pick up the Trident of Purity. You get a cut scene of an underwater door opening.  A wraith starts to attack you. Swim back and now that short tunnel is open. Follow the new tunnel to find a bird statue. You may have to go for air and return to the bird statue to get rid of the wraith. Swim back to the water trench and pull up to the north ledge. A wall has dropped so you can get pass the fire. Swim back to the water pool and into the underwater tunnel in the north-east corner.

 

Swim to the end and follow the tunnel to a small room. Push the tower to one side to get into the next tunnel. Go to the end, turn around, and pull up to the north into another tunnel. Follow the tunnel to a room with pillars. Go to the north-east corner and press a big button. You get a cut scene of a block rising back at the pool. Swim back to the pool and pull up to the north ledge. Climb the block and jump to the west ledge in front of an open doorway. Keep back from the deadly water pool or another wraith may be triggered. Enter the doorway and see a pole in a deep pit. Climb down the pole into the pit and enter the tunnel in the west wall. Follow the tunnel to a room with three statues. As you enter the room, you hear, "Follow the pure white light, Agrippina the Younger." Go to the statue in the west wall alcove and place the trident. The other two statues are fire traps.

 

Go to the north-east corner and enter a tunnel. You see three trap doors. Run and jump onto the last trap door. It opens and you drop onto a slope. You can jump up and enter the other section of tunnel but there is nothing there. Drop and jump to another slope. Slide a little and jump with a right curve to another slope, Slide and jump to grab a crevice on a wall. Shimmy to the right and safety drop at the entrance of a tunnel. Follow the tunnel and pull up onto a ledge over deadly water. Jump the ledges to the north-west corner. You will need a flare to see, as the corner is very dark. Pick up the shotgun to the left of the doorway and shoot the skeleton into the water. You can look to the south and see a scroll at the bottom of the water.

 

You have to crawl backwards and drop to get into the doorway. Enter the north doorway and go north to pick up a small medipack from the floor. There is a closed door to the north and tunnels in the east and west walls. Go east to enter the east tunnel and pull up into a crawl space. Crawl through the steam trap and continue pass two more steam traps. You drop into a room with a picture on the north wall. The grenade ammo on the south-west pedestal is a spike trap. Go to the south-east pedestal for a small medipack and red shotgun shells. There are three buttons under the picture on the north wall. The left and right buttons are fire traps. Press the middle button and get a cut scene of a door opening. Go back to the crawl space and go pass the three steam traps again.

 

Enter the room and now the north door is open. Enter the room and pick up a large medipack that you probably really need by now. Use the floor lever and get a cut scene of the scroll on the dry floor. Exit this room and go south into the room where the deadly water used to be. Safety drop to the ground and pick up the Ode to Valeria (scroll). You hear, "When a not very clever and not very attractive man of 50, falls in love with a very attractive and very clever girl of 15, it is usually for to lookout for him." I guess this is a reference to Messalina. Climb the ladder on the north wall and return to the earlier room.

 

This time, go into the west tunnel. At the end, use the Ode to Valeria to open the door. Enter the door and get a flyby of the room and down a tunnel to another room. Enter the room and go north. Follow the tunnel onto a ledge over deadly green water. Look to the north to see a closed door in a tunnel. Return to the first room and drop into the tunnel in the south wall. Follow the tunnel to a room with a deep pit. Jump to a central column and shoot the two skeletons into the pit. Jump to the ledge at the south wall. Pull down the wall switch in the corner. This opens the timed door that you saw over the green water. Jump the pit and return to the first room. Continue into the north tunnel and jump over the green water and into the tunnel. Go to the end of the tunnel and get a cut scene showing that the fire is gone on the ledge by the water.

 

Go back to the ledge and jump onto the block at the east wall. Press the big button on the east wall and get a cut scene of water. The green water is now clear and safe. Drop into the water and pick up the crowbar from the picture on the south floor. Swim into the underwater tunnel at the east wall. At a T-junction, go to the right and follow the tunnel until you can see a place to surface. Pull up to a ledge and enter a crawl space in the upper north wall. Follow the crawl space and drop into a room. You get secret #1 as you pick up a small medipack from a pedestal. A horde of beetles attack and follow you back through the crawl space and into the water.

 

Swim back to the T-junction and go straight. Follow the underwater tunnel to another junction. Take the left branch and follow the tunnel to pull up into a small room. Use the floor lever and get a cut scene of an underwater door opening. Dive into the water and swim back to the junction. Go straight and where you see a picture on the wall, watch out for a crocodile. Just follow the underwater tunnel to pull into a dry tunnel. Go to the end and enter a room.

 

You see an item on a pedestal. Do not touch it yet. Go east into a tunnel and run into a side tunnel to avoid a spike ball. Continue east and run into a side tunnel to avoid a second spike ball. Continue east and follow the tunnel to where you can see a ladder on the east wall. Look to the north wall for a side tunnel with a bird statue. Now return to the room and go to the pedestal. Pick up another Ode to Valeria and a wraith starts to attack. Run back to the bird statue to get rid of the wraith. You also hear a very long monologue that I could not make out completely so I will not attempt to quote it.

 

Leave the bird statue and go to the wall ladder in the east tunnel. Climb the ladder and back flip into a room. Shoot a skeleton back into the hole. Try to avoid the wall darts as you place the Ode to Valeria to open the door. Enter the door and pick up a large medipack from the floor. Go east into a doorway and slide down a slope. Slide down a second slope and jump at the end to grab a rope. Swing forward and release to grab a wall ladder. Climb to the top to avoid the spikes at the bottom of the ladder. Pull up into a tunnel and follow the tunnel around a corner. Notice a side tunnel with a closed door to the south. Continue east and reach a room with a deadly pool.

 

Turn and drop to grab the edge. Release and grab the crevice beneath it. Shimmy to the left until you can pull up into a tunnel. Pick up the crossbow from the floor. Follow the tunnel and find two big buttons on the side walls. Push the two big buttons and continue. Pick up a laser sight from the floor and you hear a door open. Continue and you pull up into the first tunnel. Go east to the deadly water room again and see two alcoves in the corners of the east wall. Use the crossbow and laser sight to shoot the two vases in the alcoves. The right vase will open the underwater door. The left vase will drain the water.

 

Safety drop into the dry pit and enter the east door. Pick up a large medipack and blue shotgun shells. Follow the tunnel to enter a room with a pit in the middle. There is a tunnel in the south wall. Go to the west wall and use the crowbar to pry Valeria's Heart off the wall under the writing. Ignore the skeleton and just run into the south tunnel with a wraith at your heels. Pull you into a crawl space and go to the end of the block. Drop into a tunnel and turn to the west.  Enter another crawl space on the lower west wall. Drop into a room and run to the bird statue to get rid of the wraith.

 

Return to the crawl space and go back to the tunnel. Continue into the east tunnel and follow to a room when a flyby starts showing you where to go next. Place Valeria's Heart in the receptacle on the south wall. A bridge appears over the deadly water in the south doorway. Cross the bridge and pick up a large medipack from the floor. Follow the tunnel to a room with four movable pillars, four pictures of a man (Claudius) on a floor, and four pictures of a woman (Messalina) on the floor. Save the game for the two endings.

 

Bad ending: Move the pillars onto the pictures of Claudius. You hear a sound like low rumblings of an earthquake for each picture. The door in the south-west corner opens. Enter and run down the corridor. The door closes behind you. You slide down a slope and fall onto a fire trap. The green water you see to your right is deadly. Time to reload.

 

Good ending: Move the pillars onto the pictures of Messalina. You hear a sound like thunder for each picture. The door in the south-east corner opens. Enter and run down the corridor. You hear "You will not get out of this place alive, Agrippina the Younger." Continue forward and a wraith starts to attack.  Jump up to grab the ceiling and monkey swing over the spikes and fire traps. Drop in the south-west corner and you may not catch fire. Go west and jump into the water to avoid the falling spike ball. When the ball stops rolling, pull up to the north ledge and go west up the ramp. Go to the top and drop into a south tunnel. Go to the end and pull up into a west tunnel. Go to the end for a bird statue to get rid of the wraith. Go down the south tunnel and get a flyby of the next tunnel. You hear "Even though Valeria Messalina is dead, the corruption will not die." Climb the ladder at the end and run towards the picture of Messalina as the level ends.
