The Secret of Babylon

[Note] You start the game with no medipacks, no compass, no flares, no binoculars, and no weapons. In many places, the camera view changes in a way to cause the maximum of annoyance and to give maximum trouble seeing things. You cannot use the LOOK key to even see where you are going.  And there are a lot of enemies. [End note]

 

Level 1: Introduction Movie

 

You watch a very long flyby and listen to a very long story. Finally the level changes.

 

Level 2: The Choice

 

You start with a small cut scene. You are not Lara but a blonde named Kraene. Run up the ramp and pick up the Book of Death from the pedestal. You get a cut scene of a door opening next to a fire. Run down the ramp and enter a doorway. Turn to the right and see the fire and the open door. Enter the door and go up a ramp into a corridor. You get a cut scene of a gladiator running towards you. Turn to the right and run to the corner. Enter a passageway and follow it to a large room. Run to the back left corner and pull up onto the right ledge at the back wall to avoid another gladiator. Jump onto the archway in the middle of the room. Then run and jump to the doorway over the entrance.

 

When you enter the next room, turn to the right and run to the wall. Climb the ladder as a gladiator runs up behind you. Back flip onto an upper ledge. Enter a small room and use the floor lever. You hear a trap door drop. Return to the room below and exit back onto the top of the archway. Be careful of the fire and safety drop to the floor. Drop into the open trap door in the floor. Just follow the tunnel and pass a closed gate. Continue forward into a room with a very annoying camera view. Ignore the room and go forward to the slope where the camera appears to be located. Pull up to the slope and back flip to a ledge with a pole. The camera view is normal again. Climb up to near the top of the pole and back flip onto a ledge.

 

When you land, you can see a crawl space in the far wall. Behind you are closed double doors. Jump over the room and follow the ledges to the crawl space. Crawl through and climb a wall. You enter a small room. Go forward to the fountain at the back wall. To the left is a closed door. Go to the right and step onto the platform. Jump up and pull down a trap door from the ceiling. Turn around and pull up into a tunnel. Go to the end and press the wall button. Get down again and go back through the crawl space. Jump the ledges again and get onto the opposite corner where you landed from the pole. Push open the double doors.

 

Follow the tunnel and find a small closed door. Go to the right and enter an open door. You are on a ledge over an outside area. Jump to the ledge at the left wall and see a high jump switch. Jump to grab the hanging rope. Turn around and swing to the wall and pull down the jump switch. Go to the ledges opposite the entrance door. The green vines on the wall are climbable. Climb down to the ground. Turn around and go into the small gazebo to pick up a small medipack that looks like a flask of red liquid. The jump switch has opened the doors in the wall beneath it.

 

Enter the open doors and get a cut scene of two fire wraiths attacking. Go forward and run into the right passageway. Grab the ceiling and monkey swing forward to drop into a water pool. The fire wraiths follow you and die in the water. This was very bad because you are slow on the monkey swing. I never made it even once to the water without catching on fire and losing much health. Return to the entrance room and enter the opposite passageway. Go to the end and push open the double doors. You face a room with lava. Jump onto the column ahead of you. You slide down and at the end jump forward and onto a platform.

 

Enter another room and follow the platforms to the left. Enter a dark alcove and go to the back to find a ladder. Climb the ladder and pull up onto a bridge. Cross the bridge over the room that you just left. Jump into the opening in the wall. Drop into a room and go towards the right. Press a wall button on the back wall. Continue to the right and into an opening above the room. Use the archway over the entrance to get into the open door at the far wall.

 

You enter a room with a lava floor. Go onto the beginning of the sloped ramp at the left wall. Roll and run back down to the left to avoid a rolling rock. Go up the ramp and be careful of the swinging ram as you jump onto a column in the lava. Jump to grab the ladder on the tall column. Shimmy around to the other side. Climb the ladder to the top and pull up into an alcove. Press the wall button. Climb down the ladder and back flip onto some steps. Go down the steps to pull down a jump switch. Go up the steps and through the open door. You are back in the room with the horrible camera view.

 

Jump the ledges again to get into the crawl space. Go to the fountain again and go left into the open door. You can see closed double doors in the far wall. Go there and push open the double doors. Two knife blades start moving ahead of you. Carefully jump over the knife blades and follow the tunnel. The door opens as you approach. Enter another very dark room. Stand at the entrance before the room and use LOOK to see a trap door in the floor towards your left. Go there and pull up the trap door. Climb down the wall and drop into shallow water. Go to the end of the tunnel and pull down a jump switch. You hear a door open. Exit the room and run and jump over the two knife blades again. Exit the double doors and go to the right.

 

You enter another area with an annoying camera view. Run towards the camera and follow the ledges around and you should find a floor lever. Use the floor lever and turn to the left. You can use LOOK from only this tile. You see a waterfall and some columns. Go to the left and follow the ledge to a raised block. Jump forward to grab the black climbable wall. Pull up onto a bridge area.  Follow the bridge and see an open door. Pull up onto a block at the top of the waterfalls. Walk to the start of the waterfalls. From the annoying camera view you can see a small closed door and a jump switch on the column to your right (lower left side of the camera view). Pull down that jump switch. Climb the block and ladder again and get onto the top of the waterfalls.

 

The small door is open and a gladiator is running around the area. When he seems far away, jump and run into the open door. The camera view becomes horrible again. You can see a tunnel in a wall. Follow the tunnel to a dark room. Avoid two swinging rams and go up the steps to the corner. You get secret #1 and pick up a small medipack from the pedestal. If you get lucky, the gladiator did not follow you. Exit the rooms and return to the bridge. When it is safe, jump into the larger open door. You slide down a slope and drop into a water pit. Swim into an underwater crawl space and enter an underwater maze. Swim down and to the left. When the tunnel splits, always go to the left. Swim up into a pool in an outside area.

 

Go to the outside corner of the pool. Look towards the only tree and you should see closed doors between two columns. Go there and push open the double doors. Enter the room and two gladiators attack. Go around the central column. Enter the next outside area and get a flyby of the area. The gladiators do not follow you. Turn to the right and run into the corner. The camera view changes to annoying. Jump up to grab a crevice in the corner. Shimmy to the left and pull up into an alcove with a fountain. Jump down to a lower platform. Grab a ladder and pull up to a higher platform. Turn to the right and jump into the alcove by the wall. Turn around and stand jump to grab the higher ledge as seen in the annoying camera view. Pull up and stand jump onto the ledge to the right. Go to the end of the ledge and jump to grab a crevice. Shimmy to the left and drop onto a ledge. Turn around and stand jump to grab the top of the slope. Pull up, slide down, and jump onto a corner flat ledge. Turn left and follow the archway to a floor lever. Use the floor lever and return to the center of the archway. Safety drop down the waterfalls and land back at the entrance pool.

 

Exit back through the small room back into the open area. Evade the gladiators and run to the far left corner pool. There is a hole in the bottom. If not, you have the wrong pool. Swim down and through a crawl space. It is almost impossible to get lost and you should swim down an underwater tunnel and through an open door. Continue swimming and you should surface into a dark room. You can see a trap door on the floor. Pull up the trap door to open it. Drop into the tunnel and go to the end. Use the floor lever and climb back out of the tunnel. Swim back to the outside pool again. Get out and run back to the pool where you entered this area.

 

Do not exit yet, but wait until the gladiators are far away. Pull up out of the pool and run to grab a black climbable wall. Climb up to the top and pull up onto a bridge over the area below. Turn around and jump onto a corner ledge. Three bats start to attack. Continue jumping the ledges around the walls. On the last ledge, drop onto a lower ledge. Go to the end and pull up onto a higher ledge. Follow the ledges around and finally jump into an opening in a corner wall. You enter a dark room. Run to the right wall and enter the open door. Follow the tunnel down a ramp to a room with a throne. Go through the crawl space in the right wall and enter a room with a bridge over a pool. Dive into the water and swim down into a central hole.

 

Follow the underwater tunnel to a room. There is a large bridge over your head. In one wall there is an upper closed door. Go into any corner and follow the steps up to then bridge. Go to the middle of the bridge and pull down a ceiling trap door. Pull up into the next room. Go to the corner and grab the wall ladder. Climb until Lara's hands are hear the top of the gray section of the wall. Back flip, roll, and grab the breakable tile. Pull up and run and jump to the next breakable tile. Jump up and grab the ceiling. Monkey swing into a corner alcove and release. Use the floor lever and return to the alcove entrance. Run and jump with a left curve to avoid the spikes on the floor. Safety drop onto the bridge below. Drop into the water and get out of the water. Pull up into the open door in the wall.

 

Follow the tunnel to the end and get a flyby of the next area. Another two bats start to bite you. Dive into the water and swim to the far end of the second room. Pull up on the left and look for a black climbable wall on a column. Pull up and back flip onto a ledge. Turn to the right, if you used a back flip, and run to the end of the ledge. Use the floor lever and dive into the water to avoid the bats. You may see a chest on the opposite ledge. Ignore it, as it contains nothing.

 

Swim to the far end of the room again. Swim to the right and pull up onto the ledge. Go to the back ledge and run and jump to pull down a jump switch on the column in the water. Pull up onto a ledge and enter the open door in the wall behind the column. Enter the room and go to the left. Go to the right of the throne and use the floor lever. There is also another empty chest in the opposite corner. Enter the open door in the far wall and run through the dark room to the fountain at the end. You get secret #2 and a large medipack that looks like a flask of blue liquid. Exit the rooms and dive back into the water.

 

Swim left and look at the opposite wall for an underwater tunnel. Swim inside and follow the tunnel to a dark room. Pull up and go through an open door in the wall next to the water hole. Slide down a slope and follow the tunnel to a ledge over a water pool. Dive into the water and pull up in the far ledge. The camera view is annoying again. Pull up into a tunnel and enter another large outdoor area. When you enter the area, four gladiators start to attack. Run and keep near the left wall. After you go around a few corners you should look up to see a jump switch on the wall. Pull down the jump switch and the large gates open in the nearby corner. Now return to the entrance of the room. Pull up again and race the gladiators to the far right corner of the area. Go around a trap door and pull down a jump switch on the wall. Carefully drop into the open trap doors before the gladiators get to you.

 

It is not easy but you stand jump over the two knife blades. Save before you enter too far into the room. Look at the ceiling. Some tiles have a fancy design and some tiles have a skull design. Follow the fancy ceiling tiles to avoid the spike traps. Get into the corner for secret #3 and a large medipack. Follow the fancy tiles back to the entrance. Run and jump over the knife blades again. A diagonal jump to avoid the black pivot boxes seemed to be the best jump. Pull up and run across the area and enter the open gates in the opposite corner. Follow the passageway and pull up onto a red wall to avoid the gladiators. Slide down the other side into another area.

 

Go forward around a building and get a cut scene of a black figure and a gladiator. Karene also gives another speech. Go around the building and turn to the right. You will see a cart. Push the cart twice onto a fancy floor tile. Turn to the left and run forward towards the closed doors on the other side of the pool. To the left is the gladiator of the cut scene. Go right and follow the wall to go through an open door. Pull up into an upper crawl space in the back wall. Crawl inside and turn around to safety drop into a hole. Release and the level changes.

 

Level 3: On the Run

 

[Note] You have a compass now but still no weapons. [End note]

 

You start in the hole from the last level. Turn around and go forward and slide down the slopes into a room. You get a flyby of the way up the ledges leading to a crawl space. Turn to the left and pull up onto a block. Turn to the right and run and jump to grab the next block. These jumps are hard because of the triangular wall blocks that force you to run on the edge of the block. I found it easy to grab the block, shimmy to the right just around the outside corner, pull up, and roll to get the proper setup for the next run and jump. Do this many times and on the last block, just stand jump to grab the crawl space. Pull up into the crawl space and go for a long dark crawl. When the crawl space splits, take the right branch. The left branch is a dead-end.

 

You stand up in a corridor with columns. To the south are two closed doors. Go to the north and emerge onto a balcony. Run to the left and follow the balcony. Jump over a gap to the other side. Pull down a jump switch and get a cut scene back to the corridor. It shows gladiators and doors opening. Return to the gap and use the green vines to climb down into the room below. Avoid the gladiator and see closed doors in the north corner. Go into the south corner and go through a crawl space in a small room. Pull up onto a ledge for secret #4 and a large medipack. Crawl back out and climb up the wall back onto the upper balcony.

 

Return to the south corridor and avoid the two gladiators. Go left through the open doors and jump up to grab a crevice on the left wall. Shimmy a long ways to the right until you can pull up into a crawl space. Crawl through and grab the other edge. Shimmy around to the right until you stopped by a wall. Pull up into another crawl space. Crawl through and stand up in a small room. Curse at the annoying camera view and run to the corner to pick up Crystal #1 from the floor. Crawl back out and shimmy back to the area above the steps. This lessens the damage when you drop to the floor. Follow the steps down to a large room. Again there are annoying camera views. The gladiators did not follow. I may have been lucky. Go across the room to the right window and get a flyby of the outside area. The left window has the same flyby but there is a hole beneath it.

 

Hop down onto the outside balcony. Do not go east and down the steps, as there are two gladiators waiting at the bottom. Go to the west and up the steps. Drop onto the ledge on the other side. Run and jump to grab the window in the north wall. This jump may be easier from the end of the nearly brown arch. Enter a room with closed doors. Go left and exit out the other window. Run and jump to the brown arch on the south-west. Run across the arch and jump into the open window. Enter the room and go into the corner to pick up Crystal #2. The door does not open. Go out the window and jump back onto the arch. Go to the end and stand jump onto the ledge with a plant. Safety drop to the ground on the west side of the ledge. Turn to the left and pick up Crystal #3 from the corner. Exit this area and go east and run towards a pool with obelisks. You may have to evade two gladiators. Go east and stop before a large pit. Grab the edge and shimmy to the right. Pull up in the corner and pick up Crystal #4. Shimmy back around the plant and pull up.

 

Go west to a large green plant on a large brown platform. Go north over the bricks and enter a corridor. Go north and find a crawl space behind the left column.  Crawl inside backwards and grab a ladder. Climb down to the bottom and enter a room with four receptacles. Place the four crystals and the door opens in the south wall. Save the game before entering the maze behind the open door. As you enter the open door, several skeletons appear in the maze. There are also a few pits in the maze as well. Go forward, left, right, left, right to jump over a pit, left and follow to the end to pull up into a crawl space. Drop on the other side and go west. Follow the steps up to a T-junction. Follow up the left branch and go up steps to the end. Pull down a jump switch on the north wall. This opens the doors to the outside area and attracts a gladiator. Go down the steps and follow the right branch. At the end jump to the north-east over a hole. Climb a ladder and back flip into a library-like room. Go to the bookshelves and pull down the jump switch on the west side of the column. The doors open in the east wall.

 

Go east and onto a balcony. Run and jump to grab the window to the east. Pull up and enter the room with closed doors and a throne. Pull up into either north wall window. Drop onto the outside balcony. Pick up secret #5 and a large medipack. Get onto the ledge and run and jump to grab the edge of a window. Pull up and drop back into the throne room. Go out the window in the east wall. Turn around and grab the edge. Climb down the green vines to the bottom. Release and grab the ledge below and pull up into a crawl space. Go north and drop onto a ledge. Follow the ledge north and get into a crawl space maze. Crawl north to a T-junction. Go left to a T-junction. Go left and follow the crawl space to go through a partially hidden by green leaves crawl space to the west. On the other side, safety drop into another library-like room.

 

Go south and run down the steps to see two closed doors in the north wall. Go west into the dark room. Go to the south end and pull up onto a bookshelf. Jump onto the north bookshelf. Go north and jump onto the hole in the north wall. Slide down into another room. You get a cut scene of gladiators. Hop onto the west ledge and look east towards a south wall alcove. You should see a jump switch. Go there and pull down the jump switch to open the doors. Avoid the two gladiators and run east down the corridor. Hop onto a ledge and you overlook a large throne room. Hop down into the corridor again and go south. Avoid another gladiator and pull up into the crawl space in the south wall.

 

You are in another crawl maze.  The tunnel splits as you enter. The right branch is a dead-end. Take the left branch and follow it to the end. Safety drop onto the floor of the pit. Go east and awaken a skeleton. Slide into the water and pull up on the other side. Go behind the large rock at the east wall. You awaken another skeleton. Pick up secret #6 and a large medipack. Go west back into the water to evade the skeletons.

 

Swim north and go behind the last ledge and pull up. Jump into the north wall alcove. Run and jump to grab a higher south ledge. Pull up and go south to hop onto a ledge. The green leaves indicate a climbable wall. Climb up and hear the top, back flip onto a ledge. Stand jump south-west to a ledge. Run and jump to grab the east ledge. Shimmy around to the right to get around the large plant. Pull up and stand jump onto a south ledge. Stand jump onto the east ledge. Go south and get into the tunnel in the east wall. Get into a crawl space. Crawl left, straight, and then right to exit the small maze. Safety drop onto a ledge in a large room. Hop down and look north to see the black figure. Run towards the black figure and the level changes.

 

Level 4: Ending Movie

 

You get another long speech and cut scene. Kraene is caught and executed. You get a glimpse of a woman who could be Lara. Then the level ends.
