TR3 - CATACOMBS OF THE SERPENT 1-2 by ANTON SCHMITT

Level 1 - Catacombs of the Serpent 1

 

You slide down a slope into a small valley. Jump over the short wall to your left and into a trench to pick up flares (1). Go to the far left corner behind the broken column and drop into a hole. Go through the crawl space and drop down the other side. Go forward and slide down a slope. At the bottom, jump the gap to the ledge. Light a flare and turn around and jump back to the slope. You can climb down the slope and get into a crawl space. Enter a small cave for secret #1, small medipack (2), large medipack (3) and two flares (4,5). Crawl back out and climb up to the slope. Back flip to the ledge and continue to enter another crawl space. On the other side, the tunnel widens. Before going down the tunnel, go to the right side corner and pull up into an alcove. Pick up flares (6) and a small medipack (7). Get down and continue down the tunnel.

 

When the tunnel ceiling gets higher, you can see a crawl space in the upper left wall. However, you cannot reach it. Follow the tunnel and jump left through a gap. Go around the column and stand in the high corner to grab and pull up onto the column. Step down to a lower triangular ledge. The red line on the tunnel wall denotes an invisible crevice.  Jump and grab the crevice and shimmy to the left to pull up into the crawl space. Drop on the other side and face three tunnels.

 

Follow the right side tunnel to get shotgun shells (8). Follow the left side tunnel around a loop to pick up a small medipack (9). Now enter the center tunnel. Go through a crawl space and follow the tunnel to a wide down sloping section. You have to crawl in this area because of the low ceiling. The exit way is in the lower left corner. First, crawl to the lower right corner and drop into a hole. Enter the crawl space at the bottom for secret #2, flares (10) and a large medipack (11). Get out of this area and go to the exit area. You face closed doors. Hop onto the right ledge for shotgun shells (12). Hop onto the left ledge, and push in the middle movable block to reveal a switch. Pull down the wall switch and the doors open.

 

Enter the large room and the doors close behind you. Kill the two dogs (1,2) that attack from the sides. Ahead of you is a closed door. Go to the right side corridor. Continue to the end to a T-junction. In the upper left corner you can see a closed door. Go to the right side and drop into a hole. Run into an opening and pick up shotgun shells (13). Pull up into a crawl space at the back wall and get secret #3, flares (14) and a large medipack (15). Exit back to the large room for now.

 

This time go to the other side of the room and up the stairs. You see four sets of stairs. Go down the right side stairs and kill a dog (3). You enter a room with a closed door and a key lock. Return and go down the left side stairs to find a crawl space in the wall. Enter and pick up a small medipack (16). Get into a second crawl space and follow it to stand up. Climb the ladder around the corner. At the top you enter a small room. The wall switch in front of you opens the door next to the switch.

 

Turn around and follow the tunnel over a hump to the very end and pull back a movable block. On the return trip, pull down a wall switch and get a cut scene of a door opening. Continue backand pull down a second wall switch and get a cut scene of a door opening. Then exit the open door and you are on the ledge at the top of the stairs. Go down the stairs and turn right into a small room. You can pick up a small medipack (17) beside a vase. Go to the doorway and you are overlooking the large room. Jump to the left side ledge for shotgun shells (18). Jump back to the room and exit back to the ledge near the stairs. Go to the right and enter the open door. Go to a small room and pick up the Gatekeeper Key (19) from the corner. Exit the room and go down the stairs to the room with the key lock.

 

Use the key to open the door. Go up the steps and drop into a hole in the corner for a small medipack (20). Get up and enter a room with a switch on the wall. Pull down the wall switch and get a cut scene of the door large closed doors. Exit this room and go back up the stairs to return back into the large room.

 

Return to the other corridor that you visited first. Notice that the door is open in the upper left corner.  Go to the right side and jump onto a block. Pull up to a ledge at the back wall. You could not do this before because a movable block was in the way. Jump over the slope and onto a triangular ledge. Jump to another ledge. Jump to a slope and jump forward to grab a crevice on the wall. Shimmy to the left as far as possible. When Lara gets into a climbing position, back flip, roll, and grab the ledge in front of the open door.

 

Go through a crawl space and stand up. Jump to the ladder and climb down into the hole. Pull down the wall switch in the corner and get a cut scene of the large doors opening. Stand under the ladder, back flip to a slope and jump forward to grab the ladder. Climb the ladder and back flip to the ledge. Jump to the left ledge and you are overlooking the large room. Jump to the left ledge and loop around the left to find a crawl space. Get inside and pick up a small medipack (21) and shotgun shells (22). At the shells, turn to the right and pull up into an alcove. You get secret #4, large medipack (23) and Desert Eagle Clips (24). Climb back down to the ledge over the large room. Watch your head on the overhang as you jump to the left side ledge for a small medipack (25). It is a long drop to the floor. Go back to the entrance door and safety drop to the floor there.

 

Then go back to the large room and go towards the newly open doors. Approach the doors and turn around to kill two dogs (4,5). There is a key lock and a closed blue gate at the bottom of the ramp. There are two side tunnels. Enter the right side tunnel and go to the end. Turn around and jump up grab a climbable wall. You can also climb onto the movable block to the top. Move the block to the opposite end of the ledge. You cannot do anything with the second movable block yet. Get down and return to the main tunnel and take the left side tunnel. Follow the tunnel to a ledge overlooking a large room with a structure in the middle.

 

Drop to the floor and find flares (26) under a ledge near a wall. Find a small medipack (27) on the floor near the structure. On one side of the central structure is a movable block. Move it and kill two vultures (6,7) that appear. Move the block so that you can jump onto the left ledge near where you enter the room.  Jump to the ledge and go to the left end for a small medipack (28). Go back to the center and climb a ladder. Pull down the timed switch and get a cut scene of an upper gate opening. Kill the two vultures (8,9) that appear. Try out the route. Pull the switch and run and jump to the ledge to you right. Go to the end and turn around. Back flip to a slope and jump forward to grab a higher ledge. Run and jump the higher ledges and run into the open gate. If you do not make it go to the end of the ledge for shotgun shells (29) before you try again. When you do make it, the gate closes behind you. Slide down the slope and push the movable block onto the block that you moved earlier.

 

Climb the block and jump up to grab a monkey swing. Follow the ceiling to the left and drop into a small alcove. Get secret #5, Desert Eagle clips (30), Desert Eagle (31), large medipack (32) and a small medipack (33). Jump back over the entrance slope and jump to grab a wall. Climb down and release to drop back into the main tunnel. Go up the left side tunnel again and back to the large room. Move the block again to where you can jump to the column with a switch at the far wall. Pull down the switch and jump to the timed blue platform that rises to the left. Turn and jump to the ledge above the switch and through the open gate. The gate closes behind you. Pick up the Catacomb Key (34) and the gate opens again.

 

Exit and turn to the left to jump over the next two ledges. At the end of the second ledge, jump with a left curve into an opening in the left wall. Slide down a slope and go to the end and turn to the right to pull into a crawl space. On the other side, drop into a hole and pick up a large medipack (35). Get out and return to the entrance. Go to the right and pull up into an alcove. Turn and jump the edge of a slope on the opposite wall. Pull up and back flip to a slope behind and above you. Jump forward and grab a crevice. Shimmy to the right and pull up into a tunnel. You can turn around and jump to an alcove for a small medipack (36). Follow the tunnel and drop into a hole for flares (37). Get out of the hole and grab the black ceiling. Monkey swing over to the central platform and be careful not to fall into the central hole. Pick up shotgun shells (38) and a small medipack (39). Kill a vulture (10) before it pushes you off the top of the structure.

 

Just run off the top into the central hole and you should land on the ledge below. Climb down the ladder in the central hole. At the bottom, pick up secret #6, shotgun (40), flares (41), small medipack (42) and two shotgun shells (43,44). Climb back up the ladder to the ledge. Go to the side facing the entrance and safety drop. There is a hill at the bottom so you do not loose too much health. Move the block again back to a position where you can jump to the entrance ledge. Follow the tunnel back to the main tunnel. Use the key and the blue gate opens.

 

Enter the gate and pull down the wall switch. The green gate opens but another blue gate closes. Use the switch again and the blue gates rises and the green gate falls. Turn around and pull a movable block from the wall. Push the block under the blue gate. Pull down the wall switch again and the green gate opens. The blue gate closes on top of the block so that you can walk under the gate. Walk down the slope and jump over the spike pit.  Slide down a second slope and jump over a second spike pit. Continue sliding down the slope and the level changes.

Level 2 - Catacombs of the Serpent 2

 

Slide down the slope and follow the tunnel to pick up a small medipack (1). Continue forward towards a bridge and ahead of you is a tower. Continue forward and Lara looks over to the left wall of a large cave. You need to get across the gap. Drop and grab the edge of the bridge. Pull up and roll. Now run, jump and grab the far ledge. Pull up onto the ledge and pickup shotgun shells (2).  If I just ran and jumped to the ledge, I always missed. Go to the end of the ledge and run and jump to the next ledge opposite the tower. Notice a climbable wall on the tower for later.

 

Go to the right end and stand jump to another flat section. Stand jump to a flat section in the corner and then to another section to the right. Jump up and grab a crevice and shimmy to the right. Pull up into a crawl space. Drop into the room on the other side. Get secret #1, large medipack (3) and three shotgun shells (4-6). Safety drop down onto the hole in the middle of the floor and slide down a slope. Follow the tunnel over five breakable tiles. Continue and drop into a lower tunnel. Run, jump, and grab the ledge at the far end. You cannot jump up there from the base of the ledge. You may notice another tunnel at the base of the ledge. This is an exit for later.

 

Follow the tunnel to pick up flares (7) Continue to the end of the tunnel and turn to the left and face a climbable wall. Climb the wall and when you are near where the wall changes color, back flip to a ledge. Turn and climb another wall and pull up onto the bridge. Run down the bridge and you are back at the tower.

 

At the base of the tower is a wall switch. Go to the wall switch and pull down the switch to open the trap door behind you. Drop a very long ways into water. Swim to the bottom and follow an underwater crawl space. When you reach a junction, swim down a little and enter a tunnel to the right. At a T-junction, swim to the right and surface for air. Return and go to the left tunnel. At another tunnel split, swim down and follow the tunnel to the end. Get secret #2, large medipack (8) and two shotgun shells (9,10). Swim back for air. You can swim to the bottom for a small medipack (11).

 

Swim back to the first junction and notice a second lower tunnel. Swim there and follow the tunnel to the end. You surface in a room that may look like the room that you fell into to earlier. But there is a ledge in a corner where you can pick up flares (12). You can also climb the back wall to pull up into a large underground room with a many buildings. Hop down and go right, right, left and straight. You pass a branch with rocks to climb. First go straight to the far wall for shotgun shells (13) and then return to the rocks. The rocks give you access to many tunnels in the buildings.

 

The tunnel to the left is the way to the exit. Take the right tunnel and jump to the next building. Continue and take the first right branch. Jump to the next building and run up the ramp to the roof of the building. There is short section and a long section of black roofing. Go to the middle of the short section and look down to the left to see a tunnel. Run off the roof and use grab and you should glide into that tunnel. If you see a wall torch out a left opening, you are in the right tunnel. Jump to the next building and turn the corner of the tunnel. You see a very wide cave opening to the right side. Run up the slopes of the cave to the very back. Pick up Serpent Stone #1 (14) and turn around to kill two poisonous lizards (1,2). Search the cave alcoves for flares (15) and a small medipack (16). Jump back to the building and continue down the right tunnel. Drop to the ground and go left to get back to where you entered this area.  Follow the same route to the rocks and get back onto roof.

 

Take the longer black section and jump to the next roof. Go to the right and jump to the next roof. Go left to the end and turn to the right. You see a flat section at the corner of the next building. Slide down and jump there and get on the roof of that building. Run to the end and turn around. Look up and pull up into a tunnel. Go to the end for Serpent Stone #2 (17). Go back to the lower roof and go to the middle. Look down to the right and see another tunnel. Slide down the roof with grab and land in that tunnel.

 

Go forward and slide down a slope. Go around a column and see a large mound of earth. Stand jump to the earth behind the column. Stand on the right side and stand jump into the opening in the top of the mound of earth. Pick up Serpent Stone #3 (18) and jump out back to the ground. Use stand jumps to get back into the entrance tunnel. Jump to the next building and get back to the ground.  You have to kill two poisonous lizards (3,4) somewhere on the ground. Return to the rocks and follow the same route and get back to roof.

 

Take the longer black section and jump to the next roof. Go to the right and jump to the next roof. Go left to the end and turn to the left. You see a crawl space on the far wall. Go to the end of that roof but do not get into the crawl space yet. Stand on the second tile from the end. Turn to the left and slide down the right side of the building. Grab the edge, release, and grab a crevice. Shimmy to the left and pull up into an opening. Pick up a small medipack (19). Drop into the small hole and get secret #3 and two Desert Eagle clips (21,22). There are two routes you can take. Drop and grab the edge. Shimmy to the right as far as possible before you release and drop into the mud. Go to the right and wade through the mud to dry land. You use about 7-8 small medipacks. Or drop and go the left and wade through the mud. You use about 5 small medipacks to get where you rise out of the mud again.  Ignore the first right branch, as you need medipacks for that route. Go forward to the second right branch. Turn right and wade through the mud to dry land. This route uses no more medipacks. Return to the rocks and follow the same route and get back to roof.

 

Take the longer black section and jump to the next roof. Go to the right and jump to the next roof. Go left to the end and turn to the left. You see a crawl space on the far wall. Go to the end of that roof and get into the crawl space.  Go to the end and jump over the water. Pick up Serpent Stone #4 (23) and pull up into the crawl space above your head. Crawl to the end and safety drop back onto the building roof in front of the crawl space. Follow the roofs back until you can get back to the ground. There is another poisonous lizard (5) running around. In one far corner of the area you can find a small medipack (24).

 

Now just return to the rocks and take the left branch. Jump to the next building and follow the tunnel to crawl space. Crawl through and stand up again at the end. Go to the end and pick up shotgun shells (25). Pull up into another tunnel and the tunnel changes from brown to gray. You go pass a wide tunnel section. Look through the crack in the wall to the right to see the tower at the start. Follow the tunnel up some blocks and climb a wall. At the top go forward and slide down a slope.

 

You were here from an earlier secret. But now the breakable tiles are gone. Drop into the pit and slide down the slope backwards and grab the edge. Shimmy to the right and pull up into a crawl space. Follow the tunnel through another crawl space.  Stand up and see an alcove to your right. Climb the wall there and pull up onto a ledge. Get secret #4, large medipack (26) and two shotgun shells (27,28). Get down and go to the right and through another opening. You have been in this short tunnel before as well. Now to the end of the short tunnel and run and jump to grab the high ledge. Follow the tunnel to the end and climb the walls back to the bridge. Run down the bridge and you are back at the trap door. Watch out for the trap door, as it is still open.

 

Go to the left end and jump to the ledge at the wall again. Then jump to the next ledge opposite the tower. This time run and jump to the tower to grab the climbable wall. Climb the wall to the top and pull up to the top of the tower.

 

Hop onto any corner block to pull up onto the beams of the structure. Place the four Serpent Stones in the holders on the central column. Fires start at the end of each beam. On one beam a semi-invisible platform floats in the air. Time the fire and stand on a fire platform to pull up onto that floating platform. Jump into the blue light on top of the central column. You are sucked up into another area at the top of the structure. It looks like a cave. Jump to a hill at one side and look for a tunnel above your head. There is only one place you can do this.

 

Pull up into a tunnel and climb the blocks to another cave. Jump to the top of the structure and pick up the Serpent Artifact (29). An earthquake starts and the ceiling starts to fall. Go to the wall in the direction of the falling debris and find a tunnel in the wall. Follow the tunnel as more ceiling collapses. Turn a corner and you see light and a tree at the end of the tunnel. Run down the tunnel as more ceiling collapses. The floor collapses and you land on breakable tiles. You cannot reach the end so just slide down a slope back into a trench. Go to the end and side down a slope.

 

Safety drop into a cave. Quickly climb the block under a grate and shoot three poisonous lizards (6-8). Look around the room near the four doorways. Look up to the ceiling and see a hole and a ledge. Push the movable block to a hole and climb up into the ledge. Run and jump over the hole and into an alcove. Press the button on the back alcove wall. Do this for all four ceiling holes. During this process you have to kill thirteen poisonous lizards (9-21). When all four buttons are done, the grate in the middle of the room opens. Move the block back to the center and climb the block.

 

Pull up into a small cave. Climb one of the walls in the hole above your head. Pull up into a tunnel. Follow the tunnel to an outside sandy area with trees and a water pool. Slide down the slope and look in the corners for a dark brown path in the sand. Just follow that path and the level ends.

Hi Lucas and Harrie Laudie,

first a great THANK YOU for writing this walkthrough.

I just want to make two additions:

1. The jump to the left ledge at the start of the second level isn't really that difficult if you use this trick: position your Lara with her back to the ledge, then hop back and grab, so Lara hangs from the side of the bridge. Enjoy the view into the abyss, then pull her up and immediately let do her a roll; now Lara is positioned perfectly for a runjump and grab to the ledge.

2. The swamps in the lower catacomb rooms are deadly deep on the left side (blueish lighting) and rather shallow on the right side (greenish lighting). So e.g. from the secret room back to the left you could jump with a curved runjump to the right into more shallow areas and back to solid ground without the need of any medipack.
