THE PERIDOT OF SINOOH

Level by Jungle Raider

Walkthrough by Phil Lambeth, with the assistance of Steven Svorticher's two-part video posted on YouTube.

Slide down into a dark room already occupied by an angry tiger.  After dispatching it, note the closed double doors in the E wall that requires a key.  Right behind the keyhole is a high jumpswitch.  Activate it to open similar double doors in the N wall.  Go there and head up the ramp on the left side as a boulder rolls down to your right.

After the coast is clear, locate the ladder in the E wall and climb until you're nearly even with the narrow opening to your left.  You should be able to see a sloped surface behind you.  Back flip, jump off the sloped surface without sliding, jump off a second sloped surface and grab the slit in the E wall.  Shimmy left and around the corner, and pull up onto a ledge.  Take a running jump to the N ledge and drop down onto a platform with water all around.  Pull down the wall switch to open the gate to your left.

Don't go in, however, as the opening leads to the area where you began the level.  You'll return here later.  Instead, side flip left into the water and swim forward into the small alcove for SECRET #1.  Pick up the MP5 ammo and small medipack, swim out and pull back up onto the platform.  Stand at the NE corner and jump over the fern onto the sloped E wall.  Slide down and grab the edge.  Shimmy all the way to the left and pull up to back flip to a ledge beyond a cage.  Pull the cage once toward the N wall.  Since you can't climb up onto it, you need to jump back to the slope E wall and shimmy right until you can back flip to the space on the ledge between the cage and the central column.

When you get there, push the cage against the N wall.  Now you can pull up onto that central column.  Do so and take a running jump and grab W to the next column.  Pull up and approach the open gateway.  Before entering, stoop to shoot three crates in the clearing ahead, so you won't agitate the friendly guards as you enter.  Note the alcove with the closed gate in the W wall.  Behind it, against the E wall, is a hole in the ground.  Head S into the campground, where a helicopter is hovering nearby, and go to the Options menu by hitting the P key.  Turn targeting to "manual" so you can shoot the other crates in the area without making enemies out of the guards.  However, they start moving around nervously when you fire your first shot, although they won't fire at you unless you fire at them.  Your other option, of course, is to just kill the bastards.  Pick up two stashes of shotgun ammo and the LASER SIGHT near the waterfall,  and in the SE area you'll find flares and a large medipack.  The SHOTGUN is lying all by itself in the middle of the clearing near where you entered, exposed when you shot the first group of crates.

Don't restore targeting to "automatic" quite yet.  Jump into the water in front of the waterfall after noting another gated alcove in the N wall of the building.  Swim into the opening and wind all the way around until you come to an underwater lever.  Pull it to open one of those alcove gates you noted earlier.  Swim back and pull out of the water.  You'll find that the gates in the N wall have lifted, so jump inside and down into the room below.  More friendly guards.  Shoot the three crates near the NW corner and pick up the DESERT EAGLE.  The other crate near the opening isn't shootable or pushable.  Leave the pacing guards behind and return to the clearing.  If you choose to kill the guards, one of them leaves behind some desert eagle ammo.

Go to the N rock pile, combine your desert eagle and the laser sight, and shoot the wooden barrier to release a boulder.  It rolls down and falls into the hole you noted earlier, raising the gate in the W wall in the process.  Go there and hop down onto a ledge in front of a deep pit.  Take a running jump W and grab the rope.  Swing forward and jump to the far ledge.  Pull up into the opening and find three closed gates, each with a different Roman numeral above it.  Go right toward the Roman numeral I gate.  Pull down the wall switch to open the gate to an immense lava room.  Step inside and watch the extended flyby.

Run to your left and find the raised rock tip facing the sloped pillars in the lava.  From that rock tip, take a running jump N toward the nearest pillar, rolling in midair so that you land on the slope sliding backwards.  Grab the edge and adjust Lara's position as close as possible to the middle of the pillar.  Pull up while saving your game, back flip to the slope behind you, slide down to near the lava's surface and jump off toward the next slope.  The trick is to hit that slope and jump off so that you're facing forward.  It's not easy.  Curve to the right in midair and grab the edge of the next slope.  Pull up, slide down the other side and jump off onto a ledge jutting out of the W wall.  Save your game again so you won't have to repeat this procedure.

Step forward and pull up onto the block to your right.  Run W up the ramp (don't worry, no boulder trap here), vault up to the top and climb up to your right.  Follow the passage to a slope (not a ramp) leading back down to the lava.  Slide down the left side of the slope as a boulder comes tumbling down behind you.  Jump off at the very bottom (you have no room to spare) and land on another slope in the lava.  As you slide down this second slope, jump quickly over toward the right side, as the relentless boulder is still following you.  As you near the bottom, jump with a curve to the right to land safely in the side passage as the boulder rumbles by.  Run E up the ramp, vault up as before and climb the ladder on your right.

Pull up at the top, step forward and pull up into a higher passage.  Walk forward to the far end, where the camera angle changes.  Hit the look key to restore camera control, revert to automatic targeting if you haven't already done so, draw a weapon and kill two vultures that have been alerted by your presence.  Step forward to the edge and take a running jump S over the lava to grab the rock ledge ahead.  Shimmy left and drop down onto a ledge.  Take a running jump S to a lower ledge in front of a cave filled with poisonous gas.  Quickly turn left and sprint along the rock bridge to find a block with a floor lever on it.  Pull up onto the block and push the lever to open a gate high up in the lava room.  Get out of here fast.  Slide down to cleaner air.

Turn to face N, which is the direction from which you came.  Take a running jump and grab the block jutting out from the E wall.  Pull up, step forward and pull up into the opening in the N wall.  Turn around and jump back to the higher rock ledge.  This time pull up and run forward past the rock column.  You see a rope leading to the gate you opened just now, but ignore it for the moment.  Run W across the rock bridge into another poisonous cave.  There's another floor lever at the far end, so climb up onto the block there and push the lever for a static screen shot of the lower S area in the lava room.  Get quickly out of here and go back across the rock bridge.

Take a running jump slightly SW to grab the rope, swing forward and jump off to land in front of the opened gateway.  Go inside and push the floor lever to lift the first of two gates elsewhere.  Go back outside, turn to your right and go down the ramp.  Simply run off the end to land on the block below, hop back and you're at the entrance to the Roman numeral I gate.  Run inside, look to your right and you see the Roman numeral III passage with the first gate lifted.  There's still one more to go, however, so continue forward and pull the wall switch that opens the Roman numeral II gate.

It's dark in here, so keep those flares lit.  To begin here, take a running jump from the right side of the ledge onto the block.  If you're lucky, you'll be able to target and take out two snakes that are slithering about down below.  Once they're dead, hop down and walk carefully SE.  There are deadly spike pits scattered throughout this area, but if you walk to the left of the pillar and hop into the hole, you'll trigger SECRET #2.  Pick up the shotgun ammo and the MP5 ammo, then pull out of the hole and go back to the N wall where you jumped down.  Near a spike pit you'll find a couple of TORCHES.  Pick one up and stand a couple of steps S of the block where you hopped down after dispatching the snakes.  Hop up onto the block, walk forward and take a standing jump forward into the Roman numeral gate area.

Run across through the Roman numeral I gate, turn left or right and light your torch using one of the flaming snake heads.  Return to the Roman numeral II area and carefully make your way SW to the shallow lake.  Splash across the water to an alcove near the NW corner.  Face S, back flip onto the slope behind you, jump off without sliding and keep the jump key depressed to back flip off a second slope onto a platform.  Turn around and run forward to find two unlit snake heads.  Light them both to open the gate between them.  Drop the torch and enter the N passage.  Push the floor lever to open the second gate in the Roman numeral III passage.

Retrieve your torch to give yourself some light, then retrace your steps back to the Roman numeral gateway.  Toss your torch here, as you no longer need it, and enter the Roman numeral III W gateway.  In the next room pick up the ornate KEY on the raised tile, then turn around and kill two guards who are trying to sneak up on you.  Pick up the small medipack dropped by one of them and the MP5 dropped by the other one, and return to the main hall.  Continue across through the E opening, hop down onto the ledge and jump to grab the rope.  Swing forward and jump to the far ledge.

Pull up into the E opening and hop down into the base camp area.  Head SE and enter the E opening into a familiar area.  Take a running jump E to grab the pillar, pull up and turn right.  Take a running jump S down to the platform and return to the area where you began this level.  Locate the keyhole in the E wall and use your key to open the double doors to your left.

Enter a maze of sorts.  Turn right at the entrance and then turn left to follow a long E passage.  Ignore the first left opening and take the next left.  Follow the winding passage to a junction.  Turn right and continue to a SW opening.  Enter and turn left, then take another quick left.  Follow to the LITTLE STATUE at the dead end, and a cut scene shows the area where you moved the cage earlier.  Retrace your steps, reversing the directions provided in this paragraph, and you'll emerge through the double doors into the beginning area.  Turn right and run up the N ramp until you reach the flooded area.  Jump NE to the slope once more, slide down and grab the edge, shimmy left and back flip onto the ledge with the cage.

Pull up onto the central pillar, and this time face NW and take a running jump into the alcove between the flaming snake heads.  Place the Little Statue among the little candles to open the gate to your right.  Enter the next room and kill the tiger.  Note the dead body and pick up the nearby large medipack and the UNLUCKY ADVENTURER'S NOTES.  The notes can no longer benefit the corpse, of course, but you may find his message to have some value for you.  After pondering the somewhat cryptic language, push the floor lever on the right (as you face it).  You hear the sound of a restless boulder, but don't worry.  Run across the room and pull down the wall switch in the middle of the E wall (not the one right next to the other floor lever).  A trap door falls down in the alcove to your left.  Now push the second floor lever to release the boulder and open the N double doors.

Ready your favorite weapon and slide down N.  When you reach the bottom, commence a grueling battle with the other-worldly BOSS.  Believe me, it takes a lot of firepower to bring him down.  When you finally do so, you see the gem on the pedestal that he was guarding, but your way there is still barred by numerous flames.  Turn around and find that a gate has lifted in front of the W alcove.  Enter to turn off the flames on the near NE block.  Hop up onto it and carefully take a running jump over the flames to the E wall.  I found that a "walking-running jump" accomplished this on the first try.  Have Lara walk forward, then depress the jump key while she's in her walking motion.  Take the PERIDOT from the plinth and jump back over the flames.

The N double doors are open, and a headache-inducing earthquake has begun.  Run along the rocky passage until you reach a dead end.  Looking over the edge, you can see a pool of water far below that looks impossibly far away.  To reach it, take a running swan dive (with the walk and jump keys depressed) and you should make it quite safely.  Swim W and pull out to meet a pair of decidedly unfriendly guards.  After you've killed them, mount the handy motorbike from the right side and drive it forward as the earthquake continues to rage.

Turn right at the wall and stay left at full speed to clear the deep pit.  Follow the narrow winding rock bridge and emerge E.  Continue driving forward at full speed as two boulders come tumbling down.  Jump the banks of a river and continue forward to hit the finish trigger.
