The Chapel of Montesiepi

"Galgano was a dissolute young man who after dreaming of St. Michael decided to become a knight. St. Michael during this vision led him to a strange trap. Something described only years later in the Parsifal. After a second dream, Galgano gave up violence and war, symbolically stuck his sword into a rock (a gesture symmetrical and opposite to the one of King Arthur), become an hermit and then, after his death, a saint."

With those lines this level starts – while you find yourself in a large outside area. Follow the N lane to a building, head far NW in this area and get up the hill using the winding path. At the top run SW to the church entrance where you'll get another text message. The door to the church is still closed, so head SE and follow the left wall of the church to reach a small hut you can climb on. The camera view changes; spot the jumpswitch down to your right and use it to open the doors leading into the church. Before going back there, you can follow down the hill to the S and pick up Flares in a darkish area, to the right of the other building. Now head back to the church and enter it. More text messages show up in here if you explore the church, but the game-relevant actions are getting two Hands of the Envious from the glass pedestal and the Abbey Key from the altar. Behind the altar is a Small Medipack. With those items picked up you can leave the church when you explored it enough.

The Abbey of St. Galgano, Into the Underground

Head back out and get down the E hills. Before entering the abbey, go into the NE area to the left of it and search it for more Flares. Now go around the building counter-clockwise all the way and eventually climb over block row to a courtyard with a well. Pick up Flares to the left and go further NE to spot a wooden door you can open yourself. Enter and go left to enter a smaller chamber where you can find the Lasersight and a Small Medipack. You can open the door in the corner of this room using the Abbey Key. Enter the main "hall" of the abbey and go right to place the first Hand of the Envious in the dark NE corner. A small earthquake starts and a hole appears in the floor in front of the altar. Don't drop down yet but search the area for a Large Medipack and Flares. Also, two text messages can be triggered. Afterwards drop down in the hole, landing on a slope. Slide down around the first corner, but don't drop onto the second slope as there is a crack above you – jump and grab it, shimmy left around the corner and enter the crawlspace for Secret #1, a Golden Flower. Now drop down onto the slope and slide down to its bottom. On the last slope it's better to backflip with a midair turn to let Lara slide down backwards, catch the edge and drop to not loose so much health.

Preparing the Path to the Sword

You land in a hub room with four passages branching off. Head into the S room and a message warns you about a potential bug and how to solve it (if the following puzzle doesn't work although the combination is correct, pull a block away from the right square and then push it back on it). Pick up Flares to your left and head into the far right corner to use a lever. You have to place the just raised blocks so that the sum of the numbers of all horizontal, vertical and diagonal rows are equal. There are only four pushable blocks, so all other numbers are fixed and this will give you a large hint how to solve this puzzle. To give you a last tip, the sum of all first nine numbers is 45, and there are three rows each. After solving this puzzle two blocks raise in another room. Exit this area and return to the hub. The raised blocks are located in the W passage, but going there would lead you to a dead end yet, so enter the E passage and come to a cave area. Pick up a Small Medipack to your right, then enter the passage in the far left corner, pick up Explosive Crossbow Ammo and get through the crawlspace. Follow the passage in another room, exit into the opposite passage and climb the block. Time the run over the two spike traps and place the second Hand of the Envious into the receptacle in the end. Return all the way back to the hub room; you can now enter the W passage.

The Sword and the Lion's Heads


Drop down the ladder and before climbing the blocks go S and look for Flares NW and a Small Medipack SE. In the middle of the S wall, enter a high crawlspace and crawl left at the corner to find the Crossbow. Notice a raised block in the right passage, then get back out of the crawlspace. Return N, then climb the raising blocks and jump to the ledge sticking out of the wall. Run-jump into the S opening, then follow the platforms doing run-jumps until you reach the open doorway. In the next room run-jump over to the middle platform (with another text message) and use the pole to get to the other side. The fires aren't tightly timed so they won't pose that much of a threat, but be warned that when saving on the pole and reloading Lara falls off it, so don't do that. At the end pick up the Sword and make your way back across the pole. You can shoot the lion's head high up S from here with the Crossbow (combined with the Lasersight) and any ammo, but you could also do that with one explosive shot standing on the platform at the other end of the rope. A cutscene shows a block lowering in the room where you placed the second Hand, but the other lion's head lowered the block in the crawlspace with the Crossbow. So after returning to the other side and run-jumping back to the entrance, drop down and re-enter the crawlspace, go right at the crossing this time and drop down to get Secret #2, another Golden Flower. Get back out. Now climb the ladder in the NE corner and thus return to the hub room.

Torch Madness

Enter the E caves a second time, get through the crawlspace and in the next room you'll find the lowered block. Enter the next cave area, go through the passage in the far left corner and climb up in another crawlspace. Crawl to the right, get up and find a Small Medipack in the small pool. Get out and through the other opening. Drop down into the next room and before approaching the Torches pull the wall lever to the left of the entrance. Now go picking up a Torch. Several rats come out of the hole in the rear wall, so you now need to be quick in order to not lose that much health, since the rats will follow you for quite a time. There are two ways to progress now:

1) Light the Torch using the wall torch, jump up the entrance and also over the pool. Throw it far through the crawlspace so that it won't land in the water directly behind it – it's best to throw it while running to the crawlspace. Now quickly get through and down, retrieve the still lighted Torch back and run through the caves, finally light the candlestick in the next room. A block behind the N passage leading away from the hub that you didn't visit yet lowers, so return all the way there.

2) Don't light the Torch here, but jump up the entrance and also over the pool. Throw it through the crawlspace – it will most likely fall into the water pool, so quickly get through and down and retrieve the Torch. Run through the caves, passing the candlestick you soon have to light and head into the right passage. Throw the Torch through the crawlspace, get in too and pick it up, throw it out of the crawlspace and crawl there, get it and head through the caves. Climb on the block with a door that has opened nearby, slide down the slope and at the end jump to the next slope, jump again and finally to the safe alcove where you can light the Torch. Drop back down, then throw the Torch back through the crawlspace like you did before and light the candlestick in the next room. A block behind the N passage leading away from the hub that you didn't visit yet lowers, so return all the way there.

Tower Puzzle

To the right of where you can enter this room, you can pick up a Large Medipack. Enter the left of the two passages in this room, along the way pick up Flares and head to the end of the passage. Climb up into a larger hall (here, the raising block once has blocked the way). Here, you are also safe from the rat swarm. The next puzzle might be a little confusing. There is a closed door on the E side of the central tower and a raised block on the W side. First of all pick up a Small Medipack SW. Climb the SW ladder to the top and enter a room with a floor lever. Use it and drop back down the ladder. The E door should be open now so you can enter and use the lever to lower another raising block somewhere else. To lower the block located on the other side of the tower, you now need to climb all other three ladders, apparently leading to the same room, but actually you are pushing different switches when you climb different ladders. When all four switches are pulled (by climbing all four ladders), the W block lowers and you can climb into the tower to find Secret #3, the next Golden Flower. Drop back down and finally head back into the NE hole, follow the passage back and this time go into the left passage at the junction. Follow it to the end, climb up (here was the newly lowered block) and head through the passage, when heading further you cannot go back anymore so if you're missing a secret go search for it now.

The Hydra Room

Enter the next room and before dropping down run-jump to the left pillar, then up the slope and use the button. This opens a door in the E side of the room. Drop down to floor level. Head N and suddenly two hydras appear. You might have noticed that you cannot use weapons in this room, so the only strategy is to dodge their fireballs and be as quick as possible. Climb the E block, then the N one and jump over the E spike trap. Enter the passage, push the button around the corner but ignore the ladder for now. Return, drop down to floor level again and climb back up the S ladder. Turn and jump back to the alcove where you pushed the first button; here a raising block lowered so that you can use a second button. This one opens a door on top of the ladder you previously ignored, so head back all the way there, climb the ladder and on top of the hydra room run-jump to the opposite side. Enter the passage, pick up a Small Medipack and push the button which opens the SE exit door (still notice a door N behind the hydras). Head back all the way, drop down to the floor and climb back the ladder where you came from once. Turn and jump to the near right pillar, then up into the open doorway and follow the passage. Pick up a Large Medipack in the larger chamber, then head downstairs and drop into the hole in the next room. Pick up some Flares and run down the stairs. In the next room jump to the central walkway, three skeletons in this room awake. Jump to the far walkway and use the two buttons. Now jump back over the platforms dodging the skeletons and head back up the stairs, to the left a passage revealed and you can find a Golden Flower for Secret #4. Return a last time over the walkways and head into the far passage. At the end turn and jump up to grab the ladder, climb to the top and a door opens leading you back in the hydra room – but you can see it is now rotated. The N door you noticed earlier is open now, so slide down, climb the blocks and swandive into the doorway (so that Lara will actually land in it).

The Mirror


Head up all the stairs and follow the passage into a large room with a mirror in the rear side. Look into it and see several spike tiles. The right lever is totally blocked, but the left can be accessed, so turn NE and while always looking in the mirror jump on the safe tiles, eventually you can use the sword lever. This raises a block in front of the mirror, so sideflip onto the large stairway, run up and climb the block. From here you can reach a higher passage where you can pick up a Scroll saying the following:

“To go on your own way, get superstitions over. Break old wives' tales and you'll find the light of a new day.”


Drop back down and you can take out weapons again. Read the hint and try to understand what it wants to tell you. OK if it is too cryptic for you, shatter – yes, shatter – the mirror. Before going through notice that no spike tile on this side of the destroyed mirror is active anymore so that you can safely use the NW sword lever. This lowers a block behind you, drop down and follow the passage to another mirror and a Large Medipack in front of it. Pick it up and then run through the mirror, at the other side enter the crawlspace and pick up Secret #5, the last Golden Flower, and return all the way back to the larger mirror room. Go through the remains of the mirror. The SW lever is and stays inaccessible, but the SE one (like the NE one) can be reached, jump over the obvious spike tiles. The lever is missing a sword and cannot be pushed, but since you have the Sword in your inventory, you can place it so that the lever is restored.

Outside Again

A trapdoor opens above the place where you found the Scroll, so head back, climb on the N raising block, up in the passage and finally up through the opened trapdoor. Pick up Flares NE and jump to grab the W ledge, climb up, then backflip with a midair turn and grab the higher ledge. Shimmy left if needed, then climb up and enter the crawlspace. Follow it into a larger cave with a unicorn. Ignore it for now and dive into the water, spot the W passage leading away from it. At the only junction, swim first right, pick up the Flares and swim back, swim into the last unexplored direction now and climb out in a cave with a tree at the end. There are many fruits lying around but only one isn't embed in the floor, the one W of the tree, so pick up the Apple and dive back into the E passage. Swim all the way back into the cave with the unicorn, approach it from either left or right side and use the Apple to be able to climb on it. Ride up the N slope and follow the walkways S up a ramp, which finally leads you outside again. Climb off the unicorn and when heading into the garden another text message shows up. Enter the chapel on the W side – doors are open – and head to the E end; another text message speaks of the holy grail possibly being found in this chapel. So approach the pedestal and pick up the Book... not really what we expected
;). Enjoy a final text message scrolling over the monitor, then head back outside and the level ends.
