BtB2020 – The Lost Monastery

By LaraCablara

Walkthrough by G&D Productions.

In this walk we’re NOT going to use the “True compass”, meaning the red needle is always pointing the way we describe in the walkthrough, just to avoid confusion.

Pick Axe.

Go down left of the bridge to an icy ledge and follow to those Flares in the back (E). Walk back a bit to the corner and run off so you can slide backwards down the slopes and grab the ridge, drop and follow the bank of the river to the W (jump over the steep part), where you’ll find a small cave with a camp fire to the right OR jump in the water and swim W, on the right you should see a small triangle. Swim in and get out the water or swim up and climb out and jump over the water.  Hop over the water and grab the Pick Axe. Go back along the bank of the river and jump onto the block in front of the cave entrance (E). Climb up into the cave and be careful going around the corner in the back, there are two boulders when you are going for the door in the back. Open the door with the Pick Axe and quickly grab the gurung bread off the pedestal (small medipack) before the mad monk harms you.

Freeze the River.

Run back to the river as an Ice Wraith appeared, run jump down onto the bank of the river. Run back to that little cave (jump over the steep part) where you got the Pick Axe, and hop into the water near the campfire. You can get out there… You have to be fast though as the water is freezing cold now.

Up to the Monastery.

We can now cross the river and climb up NW, left and hop over the rock pile. Be careful of the falling boulder as you make your way NE in the direction of the bridge. Jump to the bridge’s landing. Enter the tunnel, safety drop into the hole and follow the cave leading down to the Monastery.

A Torch, opening up Doors

Take a right at the stairs and in the corner on the right (SW) is an opening to a room, there’s a mad monk running about, so watch out and avoid contact. Left of the entrance is a Medipack, on the table is a Torch. You can ignite the Torch by standing in front of the stove SE. When you got the Torch burning, get out of there.

Two hungry leopards will ambush you as you leave the room, defeat them.

For a Secret: take the Torch to the left (E) side of the cave, to the left is an ice wall, stand in the middle and melt the ice. Grab Secret #1, a Buddha Statuette.

Take the Torch to the bottom of the big stairs and ignite the two bowls from standing on the ground. 4 doors open up left and right of the stairs. We have to visit each area behind them to get 4 Prayer Rolls, the order is random, but because we need a Torch in one of those areas, I went there first.

W Side - Left: Melt the Ice.

Go with the Torch through the NW doors, watch out for the icicles over the shallow frozen pool and hop up into the opening straight ahead (W), go through to a large frozen pool and go right to that small door in the S wall. Leave the Torch in front of it. Turn around and go to a block N, opposite the door. Run jump onto the low block in the N slopes and turn left, run quickly to the ledges underneath the floor E, as a boulder will come down. Grab up left to the floor and spot the big door. Run-jump N onto the ledge above the wall in the slopes, then make your way up and right to a small frozen pool in front of a cavern.

One part of the ice is breakable. First go all the way to the W and grab up to a wooden ledge to get the First Aid Kit. Go back to the small frozen pool. Face SW and hop backwards onto that breakable part and fall into freezing water. Swim W and right around the corner, just after the part where the tunnel goes up is an air pocket to the left (beam of light), go up and climb out to warm up. You could crawl to the next air pocket from here, or just hop back in and swim to the end of the tunnel and right from here. Climb up to the ledge in that small cave.

Climb up E and find a big snowball in that cave, push it out and safety drop down. Defeat the Yeti waiting for you. Turn right (E) and spot a push block.

For a Secret: Push the block to the E as far as possible and get on, run jump onto the top of the ice hill E and behind it in a deeper part, is Secret #2, another Buddha Statuette. Get back down to the block.

Push/pull that block onto the Buddha tile. The door opens up behind you left (In case you didn’t bring the Torch into this area, there’s a spare one up on the wooden ledge (W), which you can reach from the stone block. But then you have to go back to the Monastery area and ignite it and come back here). Go down the steps and pick up the burning Torch, go back up again and from the sloped block against the wall, hop onto the block W, then onto the wooden ledge and go ignite two bowls on the outcrops. The big bowl will tip over and melt the ice below. You can leave the Torch behind, as you won’t need it anymore.

From the NW corner of the wooden floor jump onto the icy slope and slide down, grab the edge and safety drop down to slide to the waters edge. Get into the deep part under the bowl and use the underwater lever there to open the door up E. Go NE up the ledges on the slope again and grab up to the floor, enter the open door and grab the Prayer Wheel 1. A Yeti will come for you, shoot it (you cannot harm him while he is pounding his chest). After the fight go through the swinging axes into the back and come to a double door you can push open (the door you hear, is the entrance door to this area re-opening in case you want to revisit). An angry bird will attack you on the balcony, defeat it. On the balcony go left (SE) and hop onto the red pillar in the corner, hang from the other side and drop grab to a crack below, shimmy left around two corners and safety drop. Get the gurung bread and go to the next area.

W Side - Right: Slay the Dragon.

Drop down to the pit and defeat the pesky spiders, a flare pickup sits right below where you entered from. Climb back up to the entrance. Walk to the pit and just jump down forward; go the pillar left in the back and grab up to the crack, ledge jump up to the higher crack and shimmy right around corners till you can drop onto a wooden floor. Pick up the gurung bread and follow the passage up some steps.

A Dragon will wake up.

Run left around the corner, to the corner of the room and jump up onto the mound, then onto the ledge and run right behind the pillar to take cover. A Big Lizard will come for you, shoot it. Behind the fence you can see a green sphere, we have to shoot 4 of those to get rid of the Dragon. Run S, loop left around behind the fence, dodge the statutes holding blades (which do minimal damage), and shoot that sphere (#1). Step into one of the alcoves W and grab up to the floor above. Go left to the SW corner to shoot sphere #2. Run a bit back to the middle of the room and shoot the Bell there (opposite the ledge to the rope, there’s another Bell in the other side of the room) to Freeze the Dragon. Looking into the room, you can see the rope hanging over the pit with the Dragon, run onto the ledge, jump to the rope and get down a bit to swing and jump across to the opposite side. Run left and shoot the sphere (#3) SE. Drop down in one of the alcoves S and kill a Lizard in that passage, shoot the sphere (#4) N. The Dragon will explode.

Go back S, left out of the passage and get down to where the Dragon was, jump over the blade trap that juts out the wall. Use the crowbar lever (face S) and see the doors in front of you open up. Climb the ladder on the back wall till you see a floor behind you; back flip off. Shoot the two Lizards and pull/push the two bells under the Buddha tiles on the ceiling (light a flare or use the binocular item).

The big doors on the N balcony opened up. Go back down the ladder, up in the NW corner of the pit, onto the ledge, behind the fence and up to the floor above through one of the alcoves W. Use the rope to get to the balcony N. Step through the doors.

For a Secret: Drop down into the hole in the floor and kill the spiders, go into the SE corner to find Secret #3, another Buddha Statuette. From the block on the other side of this pillar you can hop back up (N) to the wooden floor.

Jump over the gap in the floor and get the Prayer Wheel 2. Open the small door around the corner, go down and open the double doors. You know… left onto the red pillar, down to the crack and left around to safety drop down.

E Side – Left: Traps.

Walk up onto the wooden floor (I went along the right hand side) and side flip over that rolling blade, which will start as soon as you jump over, get clear of it, because when you are too close to those they will harm you. Run E over the red ledges when the Blades go left and be careful in the back passage up the stairs. Facing the room with statues holding swords, pull the switch to the left, which activates the generously timed door and traps. Time the Swords and run through when they go up (possible with minor harm). In the next room is a Mad Monk on a snowy spike floor; we have to kill him to get a Key. Shooting won’t do the job. Go up the stairs and step through the curtains S, go through the shallow pool.

Secret: Shoot the crates in the alcove right to find Secret #4, another Buddha Statuette.

Climb up onto the middle of the burner block and time the burners to jump or side flip over and repeat this to get to a chain pulley. Use the pulley to raise a platform above the spike floor. Jump back over the now harmless burners and get down the stairs, go right (W) and grab up to a crack in the wall. Shimmy right to the wide part under the platform and pull up inside, turn around and climb down into the pit where you can use a lever activating the Spikes and thus kill the Monk. Get back out of the crawlspace, turn left and pick up the Gold Key from where the Monk died. Pick up the gurung bread from the table under the light fixture.  Then go into the back (S) to open the door by using the Key on the W wall.

Go through the Teeth doors and around the corner in the back is a lever opening the big doors up N. Turn left and go carefully round the corner, rolling blades here…. Run after the blade and left into the alcove. When the blade is all the way to the right, run out diagonally and into the next alcove in the opposite wall. Repeat this till you are back in the main room. Go back through the spikes and loop left up the stairs, left to the far wall and there you can run jump over the fence onto that platform. Run jump and grab the floor N. Go to the Prayer Wheel 3 and pick it up, quickly run through to the back or you’ll have to crawl underneath the knives popping out of those balls. Carefully dodge the falling blocks that will shake and jut out from the ceiling as you make your way to the small door on the right. Run through the passage to the double doors, two more balls drop, but if you stay close to the wall, you can just run through. Open the double doors and go left to the corner, onto the gap in the red pillar (face W) and safety drop from the other side. You are close to the last quest.

E Side – Right: Platforming/Traps.

Around the corner climb over the crate left and get onto the next, face NW a bit and stand back, start a run jump into the back of the passage with a left curve as soon as you see that blade in the back corner so you’ll land there when it is on the other side of its track, quickly run or jump left.

A door will open; step out into a ruined arena. There are two leopards here, shoot them on your way over to the far right (NE) pillar, which is sloped. Ledge jump up to the top of the pillar. Do a sliding backwards jump with a reverse roll to grab the pillar behind it. From that pillar jump, jump to the next one, then grab the crack in the wall in front of it, or alternatively, directly the pillar W, go left around. Do a back jump and grab the crack, go right and pull up in the crawlspace. Crawl left and left onto the pillar, hang from the W side and do a back jump/grab to a lower sandy ledge (you can ignore the trench with the rolling blades). Grab up to the red pillar W, slide and jump to grab a sloped pillar, drop/grab to the crack, go left around and back jump to grab the next pillar. Ledge jump up to the top and jump/grab the pillar N. Go left around two corners and drop on a sandy ledge, run jump E from there and grab the crack, ledge jump up and shimmy all the way left around and along the wall to the next pillar (in this crevice is an ice wall in the back that has to be broken first to get to the Secret). Run jump and grab E, pull up. Use the monkey bars to get to the crawlspace in the corner on the right, get in there. Icicles block your way forward, so jump into the windowsill and shoot the windows. There’s a lever on the right hand wall, time the blocks on the ledges and pull the lever when they are inside the alcove.

Run out onto the first ledge and jump the rest of them to the other corner. Hop up left into the windowsill. Go down into the passage to find rolling blades, run after the blade and jump up left into the windowsill. Now run down between the two blades and wait a bit for the second one to move away, run after it and jump left up into the windowsill. Now you can run jump out over the second blade and run to safety.

Open the double doors around the corner and find a big Gong on that floor and a gurung bread in front of it. Push the red movable block off the balcony so you have a shortcut to get back up there. Open the double doors N, run to the end of the passage and get the Gong stick from the chest. Back out of this passage to the Gong and hit it….

Back into the N passage where the ice wall and icicles are now broken, step onto the block right. Hop forwards to grab the pole and swing to the next, then jump off onto a slope, slide and jump to grab the last pole, swing and jump into the crevice. Crawl left and hang out at the end, back jump onto the short pillar.

Turn around and grab up to the ledge N, walk over the pole to the opposite side and use the crowbar lever to open a door next to the Gong. Safety drop down NE and go back through the passage to the Gong, into the door on the left next to the gong and follow down to where you can pick up the last Prayer Wheel #4. Defeat spiders that come for you, and open the double doors behind it (SW) and go left on the balcony, over the red pillar to drop down.

Detour for a Secret:

Go back through where you obtained Prayer Wheel #4 and re-enter the gong room. To the right, under the rightmost window, is a cracked pillar, slide down it and grab its ledge, drop down to the crack below it and shimmy left to the alcove, which no longer has an icy wall covering it, crawl in and go down along the blocks to the bottom of the pit. In the back (N) is Secret #5, another Buddha Statuette. You’ll also get a "message from the builder" in the inventory with text thanking the player for playing and dedicating the level to Neal Boyd, who was a level designer on Tomb Raider 1 and 2. Get back up the blocks S, through the crevice and safety drop down, leave W and run after the blade, using the space between the crates for a pause.

Alternative route:

If you pushed the block off the balcony, enter the arena area again, from the bottom area, if you pushed the block off the balcony, climb up the block, jump and grab the closest broken pillar that you used before to make your way up and across. Platform your way to the alcove you saw on your way up there that was covered by ice, the ice should now be broken, crawl in as explained above and obtain the secret.

The Glowing Talion.

NE, just next to entrance to the area you just visited are two receptacles for Prayer Wheels, two more are found in the NW corner of the area. The Monastery opens up and a big Hammer Guy is protecting the entrance, go take him on, just jump around a lot, constantly firing at him, until he explodes.

Inside the Monastery is a Glowing Talion in front of the Buddha Statue, get it.

Lara: I better make my way back to the camp.

Go out of the Monastery, down the stairs and straight up into the icy cave, defeat the three leopards who await you, climb up S and slide down the slopes in the canyon with the broken bridge. Go down a bit to the right and cross the river, grab up to a ledge SE in the S slopes. Go up S, a bit right and from there, jump W so you can grab up S again and when you finally reach that end of the bridge where you had started, the adventure ends…
