THE LOST TEMPLE OF KOLOBAINE

The Story.

Back in the time of Egypt's Thirteenth Dynasty (1783-1640 BC) is when the story begins. We must start with Kamos, a powerful
and influential sage, who had the power to create energy, the like of which had never been before - powerful electrical currents
of energy that were capable of supporting a man's weight or of repelling the force of water. It was said that at one of his sermons, Kamos invited the crowds to throw stones and rocks at him. This they did, only to see them fall short, blocked by his magic. Kamos offered this energy to the people as protection and for many years there was peace. Then, on his deathbed, Kamos bequeathed to his two sons, Tuthmos and Kolobaine, the source of his great power - to Tuthmos, an ancient scroll and to Kolobaine, a blue crystal. Only together would these objects produce the energy, and it was together that Kamos hoped his sons would rule. But he reckoned without
Kolobaine, who had no intention of sharing this power with his brother. He and his followers stole into Tuthmos' house and murdered him, taking the scroll with them. Kolobaine and his men then disappeared and went to ground in a secret temple, avoiding the anger of the people.

However, Kolobaine's vanity was strong and he soon felt that the people should now kneel before him as a god. He decided to make them do this.

There was a war, in which many were killed and Kolobaine was one of them. The people now hoped that because of his death, the powerful magic that had for years protected them, would be returned. But Kolobaine's followers had other ideas. They collected his body and returned to their hidden temple. Dismembering his corpse they cast a spell that whilst Kolobaine's body remained on the Earth, his power would never fall
into his enemies' hands. They scattered his body inside his temple and sealed themselves inside, vowing to protect Kolobaine and his secrets for eternity. The temple was never discovered and the name Kolobaine was wiped from the pages of history.

Its location has remained a mystery for millennia ... until now.

The Walkthrough

OK, people, this is my second attempt at a Tomb Raider adventure and, like last time, I have decided to add a walkthrough for those of you who might find it a bit on the difficult side. The walkthrough will not only tell you how to complete the level (although I haven't included all pick?ups), where to find the secrets and your weapons, it will also tell where you are as you travel through the temple of Kolobaine, what room is what and what certain features mean.

OUTER CHAMBERS

You begin with Lara falling from a hole in the ceiling of the entrance hall. Apart from a smashable vase, there isn't really much else to do in this room apart from look around and say "Oo?ar, that's nice". After you've admired the decor, take a plunge into the pool and you'll find yourself being pulled along the tunnel. Once at the other end, climb out and make your way to either side of the pool and take the steps down to the ladder and then on down
to ground level. Once you've stepped onto the sandy surface, a figure will stagger out of the shadows, burping incoherent obscenities and waving its arms about in a threatening manner. No this isn't an English football hooligan after a few too many bevies, it's your genuine, bona fide, ancient Egyptian mummy,
complete with trailing bandages and excessive eczema. This is the guy who closed the tomb up after everyone else was inside (oh yes, I've thought of everything). Don't worry though, he isn't much of a threat and can be avoided by simply running round him, so do this, up the steps and over the rope swing to the other side. Passing through the door at the back, you'll find a pushable object. You need to manoeuvre this object around the central column and into the cavity at the back. However, once you've pushed the object into place, jump back twice to avoid getting a large spiky ball in the top of the skull.

You've now opened the door at the top of this room and can (after smashing the big vase in the doorway to get your laser sight) make your way up to the lever. Pulling the lever will result in a ghostly form emerging from the huge sculpted face in front of you, so turn around and make your way over to the statue under the shafts of light, move around this area until the ghost is sucked towards the statue and blows up. You can now go back to ground level and enter the middle chambers of the temple through the now open door.

MIDDLE CHAMBERS

Blowing up the small pot in front of you will reward you with not only some shotgun shells but also another mummy. The room to the right has some bullets to your right and, in the water, you'll find your six shooter gun. Don't worry, this underwater vent isn't on. Running through the doorway opposite you'll see a pole to climb. Ignore this room for now as you'll need a puzzle item to open the door.

Make your way down the corridor and make a right into the little alcove. This is here not only for those of you who had the misfortune to have smashed the pot over the scarabs nest, but also for those of you trying to find all of the three secret rooms in my level. Hang off the nearest side of the pit and you'll find that Lara positions herself into climbing mode, climb down, drop and grab the edge of the doorway, this will take you to secret 1.

Once through this, enter the room at the end and stare through the glass walls at the two separate elements of the required puzzle piece, but you can't get to them yet so it's down the pole and into the next room. In here you'll find a pushable item and two doors. The light coloured tiles activate the doors so move the object onto one of these two squares (note that once you pull the object OFF the light tile the door will close again). My advice is to take
the right door (if you are standing with the pole behind you) as this room has your shotgun in.

Once in here, make a quick dash to the right and through the fake panel in the wall for Secret 2. AVOID pushing the object onto the lightly coloured square in this room. In fact you don't need to use the pushable object at all, it's a trap to produce two skeletons. The way you get the block in the pyramid to rise is by smashing all five of the BLACK vases. The two orange vases either side of the door contain your shotgun and a small medipack. The room into which you've now entered contains two mummies and a vase. Smash this vase for an important puzzle piece and escape by dropping down the hole on top of the ledge. You are now behind the glass for the handle element of the puzzle piece. Pick it up, go through the door and down.

Move your push block over to the other side and slide down into this new room. A swift animation reveals a skeleton guard, so burst his cranium and hang a right down the little corridor. Pull the lever and this will now give you access to the pushable item (groan ? more pushing) This goes into the wall space and the door above will open, so up you go.

You're now inside the burial chamber of Kolobaine's loyal priests (hence the copious amount o'coffins). You might have noticed that most of them are upand about, grunting and belching in that horrible way they d o. It's here that your shotgun will come in most handy, a well timed shot will send the crusty corpse a?tumblin' to the ground and buy you some valuable seconds to make a jump. Work your way up this room and, at the top, shoot the important looking vase to get the puzzle piece, then it's over to the hole in the corner and drop down. You can now pick up the head of the guardian puzzle piece (remember, it only becomes an active puzzle piece once you stick them together). You can now work your way back to the first pole that you saw earlierand go up it. Once there, place the guardian piece into the stand and the doorway before you will open, allowing you access to the power chamber.

POWER CHAMBERS

Go through the doorway on the left and you'll find your self in a bare room with two closed doors and a pole. Use your site to shoot the vase that's placedin the alcove near the ceiling and one of these doors will open. OH GOD, another bloody pushable object!!!! Push this object into the room and collect your grenade launcher, then pull the object back out. The reason you've done it this way is because if you pull it out first then a large spiky ball will dropinto the doorway and block it (Kolobaine was fond of his big balls . . . oo?er). Now check the ceiling out for the correct path to push your object to open the second door.

You now need to climb up the side of these chimneys and into the room at the top. It's in here that you'll find the main switch to activate the power for the inner chambers of the level. Once you've pressed it, head back down and you'll find that the doorway behind the huge column has opened. The column is carrying the power down from the room at the top and through into the rooms ahead of you. You can see the path the power takes by noting the direction of the blue floor tiles. Step through this door to enter the inner chambers of the Kolobaine temple.

INNER CHAMBERS

Ahead of you is a bridge made from the electrical energy referred to in the story. If the power hadn't been turned on, access to the inner chambers would have been impossible because of the pit below. But now that the power has been turned on, you've set off two skeleton guards who'll need their 'eads shot off!

Once done, crawl through the low space and take a left.

You have found the sacred alter where the Tuthmos scroll must be placed. In here you may also have noted that there is more of the electrical energy flowing from the ceiling, housing a water column! Water??? I hear the cry go up, how did water get in there after the power was turned on? Well run around to the altar at the back and look down into the water room below ? see them vents? Well when the power was turned on, so were those vents opened and they filled the area full of water to allow you to gain access to deeper areas of the temple. Press the switch on the wall to open the door to the room above.

Go back to the hallway and climb up the ladder into the top room. In here you'll be able to see a lever, a water pit and another of those large spiky balls, don't panic about the ball though, it isn't there as a trap as you'll find out in a minute. Leap into the water and take a swim down and up into the small room. Behind the pillar is a switch, so press it and you'll open the door that allows you access to the lever. Swim back to this room and use you grenade launcher to dispose of the two skeleton guards that have now appeared. Climb up the broken bricks and pull the lever to release the ball. As the animation shows, the ball drops from the ceiling and lands on the lightly coloured tile in the floor, thus opening the door back in the little room, but watch out, here
comes another of those blooming ghost things. Into the water you go and, avoiding the ghost, swim back to the little room and exit through the door. At the end of this corridor you'll find one of those statues that sucks the ghost in so hang around it for a min till old spooky disappears.

There are two levers in this room that you need to pull to open the door in the middle, these can be found either side of the inner part of this chamber.

Once the door is open, make your way into this central part and kill the skeleton guard. Now before you enter through the door, jump back and hang over the edge of the pit. If you are opposite the door you'll find a climbable surface that will lead you down to secret 3. After you've got the items from in here, enter through the door and down the pole.

You have now found the vaults of the temple where the Tuthmos scroll is kept, behind that door opposite. Jump to the platform in the centre of the room (avoid the middle of this space as there is a spiky ball just overhead. Shoot both of the two vases and return back to the pole side of the pit. The two holes in the floor have gone and you can now pull the big statues out of their little alcoves. Just behind these objects you will find a puzzle hole, so whack in your appropriate puzzle piece and head back to the now open safe door. Smash the vase to get the scroll. It's now time to head all the way back to the altar.

Once here, put the Tuthmos scroll in place and the mechanism will allow you entrance to the final chambers of the temple.

FINAL CHAMBER

This is the resting place of Kolobaine. Scattered about this hall are his bones, and these need to be smashed in order to open the doorway to the room that houses the Kolobaine crystal. You'll find the first two sets of bones in the room with the huge double doors. Make your way up to the room (killing a couple of skeleton guards on the way) and the doors will open as you approach. Kill the two guards in here and then smash the bones. Once you've destroyed them, push both of the wall switches to open doors opposite. But oh no! You get attacked by one of those ghosts again, so drop down the hole in the floor and you'll find that the doorway at ground level has opened. This room contains another of these suck?in?spookey?one statues which will relieve you of this ghostly problem. Climb back up and enter both of the newly opened rooms to find the last two bones of Kolobaine. Once you have destroyed them, the doorway up top opens, so make your way up.

You're now in the crystal room. There before you is the prize that you've battled though this level for; The Kolobaine Crystal. You'll probably be aware of a slight rumbling sensation when you pick the crystal up, don't panic, it's just that you've made the power source unstable by pinching the main element.

Make your way back out and you'll see that the door in the corner has been shaken open, that's the way out so get your butt over there (avoiding some angry scarabs on the way) and dash ? I repeat ? dash through this last corridor. You've done it, you are now standing in the exit room, the way back to the outside world. Why, I hear you cry, didn't Lara just use this entrance in the first place instead of battling through the temple with its traps and beasties? Well the exit is hidden from the world using extensive camouflage . . . and by putting it half way up a mountain. Nobody knew that Kolobaine's temple existed, so nobody has ever been looking for or ever discovered it before now.

. . . well almost nobody.

Ok folks, that's it, hope you enjoyed it and I dare say that I'll be getting to grips with another level soon.
