Description/Story : This is a modified wad containing object simular to those found
in the original Tomb Raider's first level. Textures were edited
to make some of the objects more like the original. This WAD
set now features the ORIGINAL TR1 dog! (See History of "The Caves"
WAD for more information) This zip file is the companion to "The
Caves" versions 8.5 and IS REQUIRED if you wish to play that level.

Additional Credits to : Theresa for the wonderful web site and forums, The EIDOS Level
Editor forum, and everyone on the forums. Without you, I'd still
be stuck on several things! Stefan Schneider's (author of Jack!),
Turbo Pascal (author of Room Viewer and StrPix), Michael (author
of WADMerger and TR2WAD), Mike (author of TRwest), Roy (author of
TRItem), E. Popov (Author of TRViewer) The Vagrant for hosting and
listing UnOfficial Editor Tools, Henk Eland for supplying me with
Version 1 of "The Caves" and CORE for making Tomb Raider so great
in the first place!. Special thanks to Trebble for beta testing
			  this version.

Beta Testers : Several people from Theresa's forums, the TRediting Zone and
Treeble. Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Development machine : 500mhz AMD K-6 3D Processor w/88MB RAM

Known Bugs : There are now two bugs that I know of. The dog, which is originally
a TR3 dog, barks when displaying the animation for it to howl. And,
you may see Lara jump into the air when crossing from one bridge
object to the next. This is very rare and you may never see it
happen. I have no idea how to fix either bug. If anyone has any
                          ideas, please let me know.

* History of "The Caves" *

About the dogs at the beginning of versions 1-6: No, they are not there in the PC version.
They came about when I started to get bored while testing the level. I just had to have
*something* to do. So, I put them in. When I released the first version, I forgot to take
them out. I didn't realize this until I started to get comments back. By then, it was too
late. They were there, people knew about them and I didn't want to confuse anyone. At the
time, I didn't think there'd be another version. Thing's like TRwest, WADMerger and StrPix
were thought to be impossible (Boy, was I wrong :). Having played it over and over and over
again, I've just gotten used to them being there and haven't bothered to remove them. I know
it's keeping it from ever being exactly like the original, but none of it is really. Anyway,
they have been removed for version 7 and will make a return in the "eXtras" version.

Version 1 - First version, not released. Initial creation, de-bugging, testing, playing.
This was mainly my testing level and was never to be released. However, it was
released very briefly, one day to be exact. After realizing what I did, I quickly
prepared version 2 and released it. Some people actually still have this version
and it is reported to be still available on at least one site for download.
Version 2 - First released version. Finnished applying correct textures. Fixed bugs.
            Object placement is incomplete.
Version 3 - Another unreleased version. Re-texturing started with "new" textures from texture
sets supplied with TRLE. Testing of several theories, some worked some didn't.
Version 4 - Second released version. This was the first re-textured version and used
textures from the textures sets included with the editor. I got many complaints
on this so I re-textured to the original and released version 5.
Version 5 - Third released version. This is where the "Original" version and "Textured"
version started from. The only changes are the textures. The "Original" version
uses the textures found in version 2 and the "Textured" version uses textures
found in version 4. This was done after many complaints about version 4 both in
            e-mail and on Theresa's forums.
Version 6 - Third released version. This when TRwest first came out and is the first version
to feature an edited WAD and WAD Textures. This solved several problems including
the switch bug that plagued the level from the beginning (the one where the
switch for the timed doors didn't reset and you had to throw it twice to open the
doors a second or third time, depending on if you made it or not). This one also
addresses the shading and lighting, which was totally absent (save for one
corridor) until now. I also managed to get just about every object correctly
placed. As of this version, the only objects lacking are bears, the three bridge
objects (flat and two tilts), the two poles and ropes that "hold" the bridge up
and the crumbling floor. In addition, the "Textured" version's texture set has
totally been re-done. This gives it a completely different look from the
            original.
Version 7 - This is a total rebuild and may be a bit different than all previous versions.
The reason for a rebuild is simple. My entire computer died and had to be
replaced. I lost everything and had to start completely over. I also realized
that there were several problems with V6 and, rather than drop "The Caves", I
decided to rebuild and fix everything I possibly could. That, and a little
encouragement from Treeble, brings you the second to last version of "The Caves".
This version features the removal of the "Five Dogs" at the beginning (look for
them to make a return in the "eXtras" version, correct room shapes and
dimensions, correct textures placement, correct object placement and a new WAD
set. This is the most faithful recreation to date. No extras have been added and
very few substitutions have been made (some objects that were in V6 will make a
return in the "eXtras" version). With this version, I also dropped the "Textured"
version(s). This was done so I can save time and get the next level(s) completed.
Version 8 - The main differences between version 7 and version 8 is the lighting and shading.
Version 7 didn't have any and version 8 does :). The only other difference is the
opening fly-by. I just re-worked it a bit. The fly-by will be removed when
version 9 is released. Oh, and I removed several objects from the wad set and one
from the level itself (see below).
Version 8.5 - The differences include the removal of the opening-fly by. The image previously
seen here is now part of the load screen and is triggered at the close of the
	    level. New SCRIPT.DAT, ENGLISH.DAT, STRINGS.H, LOAD.BMP and UKLOGO.PAK files have
been created (see below for more info). These are now REQUIRED and will be from
now on. Oh, and the ORIGINAL TR1 dog is now included in the WAD set (see below
	    for more info).

* History of "The Caves" WAD *

Version 1 - Companion to versions 5O, 5T, 6O and 6T of "The Caves". This was released after
TRwest v1 was released and, therefore, only objects from the WADs released by
EIDOS were available. Some of the objects were re-textured to match the originals
using StrPix. The objects used came from the angkor, catacomb, cleopal, coastal,
karnak, library, and settomb WAD sets.
Version 2 - Companion to version 7 of "The Caves". TRwest v2 and StrPix3 were both released
between these two as well as several versions of TR2WAD and WadMerger. They all
opened up several possibilities. TR2WAD was used to convert TR1 (*phd) and TR3
(*.TR2) files to TR4 (*.WAD) files. TRwest V2 was used to extract objects from
*.TR4 files and the converted TR1 & TR3 files. StrPix3 was not used as I have no
experience with CAD programs. Hopefully some kind soul will be willing to help me
	    edit a few objects soon.
Version 3 - Companion to version 8 of "The Caves". The only change is the removal of several
objects that were left over from my "Textured Version's" experiment. You will
still need this version for version 8 of "The Caves" as one object in the level
	    was removed.
Version 4 - Companion to version 8.5 of "The Caves". It should also work with version 8 of
"The Caves" as well. The one and only change is the addition of the ORIGINAL TR1
dog. How it was accomplished: This is the strange part. I went all this time
thinking I'd never have the true TR1 dog. It was then pointed out to me that I
was WRONG! In TR2 Gold the original dog was used, right down to the meshes,
textures and animations! However, there were problems. I converted it to a WAD
file using TR2WAD and extracted added it to the level it using TRWest. It worked
perfect...Except for the sounds! It sounded like it was using a door opening
sound when it died. Yikes! So, I decided to try out the extract/import mesh
funtions of STRPix3. I then imported them over the original TR4 dog. Perfect! It
even fixed the "barking during howling animation" problem! I them had to extract
each texture and import them with WADMerger. I then opened to instances of
STRPix3, one with each wad open, and applied the correct textures. And now, we
FINALLY have the original TR1 dog. I hope you all enjoy!

* History of the "L01-VxS.ZIP" File *

Version 1 - The file included in this zip file are SCRIPT.DAT, ENGLISH.DAT, STRINGS.H,
	    LOAD.BMP and UKLOGO.PAK. The SCRIPT.DAT, ENGLISH.DAT and STRINGS.H files are so
you won't have to do any re-naming of files and to provide the correct name for
the level (seen only on the load/save menu). The cheat has been disabled and a
load screen as been created. These files are REQUIRED and will be updated as more
levels are converted. The LOAD.BMP and UKLOGO.PAK are optional and were created
to give the feel of the original Tomb Raider game. No updates are expected at
this time for these two, but will remain in this zip file just incase.
