THE LEGACY OF DOMINO by Dan the Jazzman

Welcome to the readme file for the Legacy of Domino. On your right is the scroll bar, useful for scrolling. Near the bottom is the startbar, unless you've moved it somewhere else. On your left is the rest of this sentence. If you're still with us then see below for useful information about the level you have downloaded. If you have not downloaded the level then you've hacked onto a server and nicked the readme file from someone, please return it as soon as possible and report yourself to the police, then feel free to download the level like everyone else. If you're looking for hints, please see the end of this document, which can be found in a downward direction (that's what the scroll bar is for).

Thanks for downloading my level. It's taken me months to complete, on and off, and it feels like time well spent so I hope you enjoy it. For the storyline press the red button.....................................(wait for it)....................... now. *Blip*

After returning back from defeating Natla, the true scale of what Lara had done started to dawn on her. She had destroyed the few remains of an ancient civilization which virtually nobody even knows about today, and by doing so had saved the world. Was Atlantis doomed to be cast only as a myth? The island itself had been destroyed when the scion exploded, now there was nothing to show of this advanced civilization where the forces of nature were played with as if they were toys. Lara felt that she had nothing to show for her achievement after all. How was she going to convince people for years to come that there once was such a place? Then it struck her. Atlantis itself may be gone, but she had explored three of its other colonies. They were still pretty much intact- well, mostly. Except the bits she hadn't left intact...

So she set out to find the tapestry in Tihocan's tomb, the only surviving record of Atlantis. Raiding just isn't the same when someone's beat you to it and left all the doors open for you, so she finds it fairly swiftly and folds it up into her Acme-patent-pending-really-useful-infinite-capacity-rucksack and takes it to study. Back at her mansion, she examines it and reads it through thoroughly. What she finds amazes her- she made a mistake! What she previously thought had read- "He tried to keep rule here in these barren other lands" actually read- "He tried to keep rule here in these other lands of Barran and... " What was that word? A smudge of dirt was obscuring whatever was written underneath. But Lara being the versatile woman she is manages to find.... a toothpick. She picks off whatever it was (looks like Atlantean chewing gum...) and read- Domino? That was the one word written beneath it. The other lands of Barran and Domino- suddenly what she is reading falls into place.

Up in her attic Lara brushes the dust off an artifact she had gained when she was much younger. A beautiful map she had recovered from a tomb early on in her raiding days. It must have dated back to about the fifth century, she had never known for sure. Reading it confirmed her suspicions. She searched for two points; one in Greece marked "Barran" and the other in Portugal named "Domino". Perfect. She had never known what these two were referring to, now she felt reassured knowing that there was still something left to explore, there was still a secret to be unearthed which could prove the existence of this great civilization. What would she find? Lara knew there was only one way to find out.

After travelling to the remote village indicated on her map, she can't find anything. No big tourist attractions boasting tours of an Atlantean outpost, no signs giving directions, not even any mysterious footprints to follow. Thinking the map may be wrong, she goes into the nearest shop for a local remedy for fatigue. If the sight of Lara Croft walking in with pistols strapped to her thighs didn't scare the wise woman who ran the shop, what she said certainly did. For she already knew of the local myth of Domino, the legendary colony of Atlantis. The local people did not dare to go beyond the water hole in the valley, because of the rumors the catacombs located beneath. Of course that didn't scare Lara, it was exactly what she wanted to hear. In the mean time she wants a cup of herbal tea, please.

Soon she traveled across the valley to the water hole, and searches for whatever she can find. Soon she sees something she recognizes- three inscriptions on a rock. A horse's head, a dove and an eye. Lara smiles to herself as she presses inwards on the horse's mouth, as she had done before. She grinned as she felt the ground shake, and gave a little chuckle when it opened up and swallowed her. She made a note to herself that this time, if she should find a scion, not to shoot it...

If you're still with us, congratulations, you got to the boring part where I tell you the important things about my level you need to know. I've been working on it since I got the editor a year and a half ago. Since then I started again on it because I thought it was rubbish, though I kept one or two bits, and also upgraded my computer. In all I'd say it's about 10 month's work you're about to play. It's been worth it, and I'm glad I have something to show for the work. I've tried to make it as good as an official level, I hope I succeeded! Yes, it's my first level, please don't hate me, it started off pretty rubbish, don't worry about that!

Sorry about the big download, but so many audio files take space- don't listen to them before you play, you'll spoil it! I think they were worth including even though they were big- I've created the music myself based on themes from TR1. I'm taking a Music GCSE course, I'm hoping to submit the music you'll hear after the earthquake, what do you think? Thanks to Nathan Mcree for giving me something to work from on some of the other tracks. I want your job! No, really, I do! Look out for TR26, it might have my name in the credits...

I've tried to recreate the same atmosphere and style of TR1 as much as I could, so I hope I've created a "traditional" Tomb to raid! You'll see a few surprises along the way, look out for Atlantean Lara! Of course, I couldn't help putting in a few flybys and triangular blocks and things, but I hope it adds to the effect. Also, you won't have to use any moves which were added since TR2, such as climbing walls, crawling, that sort of thing. Don't bother looking for any climbing walls, there aren't any, I guarantee! Even the spikes behave more like they did in TR1; i.e. you can't kill yourself by brushing past them like you usually can in TR4. But remember you can't safety-walk through them. Eventually I hope to make an actual TR1 version if/when TRWad releases a version of flooredit which can do that...

Installing- Audio (wav) files go in the Audio folder, The domino.tr4 level file goes into the data folder and the script files (english.dat and script.dat) go into your main Trle folder. That is, the one with tomb4.exe and winroomedit. You can delete these files after you play the level if you want (you don't have to though, unless you're emotionally scarred by playing the level and want to remove all trace of it from your computer, which is more than likely, come to think of it). None of the original audio files are overwritten, unless you've made your own audio files and put them in those slots. Just copy them into the folder, don't worry about overwriting anything.

Bugs- I don't think there are any bugs in my level. I did have a few problems with the flipmaps (the editor kept changing them around for some reason) but they seem to be ironed out now. My level did start growing out of control, but there shouldn't be a problem any more, since I deleted things I didn't need and managed to reduce the size of the TR4 file by about a megabyte! Incidentally, it had to be downloaded as a compiled level because some of the sound files were changed. Only the sounds you need are compiled into the level, I took out any which aren't necessary to reduce the download. If you've played TR1 you might recognize some of them... Everything should be fine, but believe me I never thought I'd get rid of some of the problems I had! If you do find a bug though, please let me know at Dan_the_Jazzman@myrealbox.com

However, I just need to tell you about one leeeetle thing that a few people seem to get wrong. After you exit the globe/egg room (you'll know it when you come to it) the boulder trap after that is a bit evil, even by my standards. Just keep going past the switch and make the jump ahead of you. Otherwise the boulder will/should crush you if it doesn't flush you out of the corridor. Don't stand there like a lemon and hope the boulder goes past you- it IS possible to stand in a certain way against the wall to get it to roll past you, but it's far more difficult and I've never managed to do it. Some people did that and missed half the level! Just make the jump ahead into the next room and everything will be fine. If you're finding it hard there's another small hint at the bottom. I probably didn't need to tell you that, but some people made that mistake so I thought I'd better point it out before you do. Just don't lose any sleep over it in the mean time.

I don't have any problems with my graphics card viewing even the darkest parts of the level. It's a TR1 level, so I didn't put any flares in! But there are no pitch-black areas at all. If it's too dark for you then I'd recommend you adjust the gamma settings on your video card to make things brighter (Go into control panel, click display properties, the settings tab, then click the advanced button). Failing that, adjust the settings on your monitor, though gamma is probably what you're looking to change. There shouldn't be any problems though, and you probably won't need the flares you start with.

Also, if you want to extract any of the objects in my level for your own wad files then feel free, but please e-mail me first. If you want to host my level that would be great, though again please let me know :-)

If you're still with us then I assume either you found a bug and was looking to see if I already knew about it (I didn't) or you have nothing better to do than sit here and read the readme file for a tomb raider level (or DO have something better to do but don't want to do it). If you're still stuck and are looking for hints then carry on. There's also a complete solution for the first boulder/crumbling block puzzle since it's so hard ;-). There are 6 secrets to find, though I bet you won't get them all! I'm telling you, you won't! Let me know if you do, maybe I should give you a prize or something. Also, look out for medipacks and uzi ammo because often it is camouflaged with the floor, I doubt you'll get all of it so use the pistols where you can.

Disclaimer thingy I have to put:

Acknowledgements due-

To Core design for keeping Lara safe and not putting her in any dangerous situation where she might be killed, and making sure she didn't get trapped under a pyramid and change her personality or anything daft like that. I think I'll play TR4 next.
To TRWad for Wadmerger and Turbo Pascal for StrPix
To Tombraiderchronicles.com and to trle.net for hosting my level (and to Justin at TRC and Michael at TRLE for support and letting me update!)
To James, William and Sam for the inspirations and for keeping me raiding
To everyone at www.tombraiderforums.com and the Eidos Forums. You people are great!
To Josh, for being there and for testing. Never thought I'd appreciate some of those comments :-p Thanks for everything you've done for me, I really appreciate it all.

If you're still here then you just read a list of acknowledgements. Duh!

Finally, see below for some hints on some of the puzzles and a solution for the first mad dash at the beginning. It's a hard level in places! Mwahahahaha. Feel free to e-mail me if you want another hint or solution- Dan_the_Jazzman@myrealbox.com. Don't send me adverts trying to sell me double glazing. I'm not interested in double glazing. I have enough double glazing as it is. No I don't care if the queen chooses your double glazing, do I look like the queen? Shut up, I didn't ask you for your opinion. Well okay, I did but I'm not interested. Do you even know what double glazing is? I thought not. So stop harassing me, okay? Wait, you're not the blonde tart who usually tries to sell me double glazing... Oops. Sorry.

Now go forth and raid! I hope you enjoy my level, let me know how you get on!

Okay, here goes. You can't get past those crumbling blocks? After doing it as many times as I have to, I can do it every time now :-p. I'll try and describe a safe method to you. When you gain control of Lara, jump onto the first set of crumbling blocks. You don't have much choice, really. Keep running and on the third block roll and press action to grab the edge. Hang there until it collapses and then jump off that sloping bit you land on (sneaky, that!) and turn in mid-air. Okay, so that move wasn't allowed in TR1 but like I said this is the easiest method. Land on the block and do a running jump onto the next block. You should aim to land right at the front of it so you can do a standing jump onto the next one, and then do a running jump onto the last platform. You don't have time to set it up, just go for it! Then you can jump and grab the switch ahead of you (look up and ahead) to open the door, and the boulder will roll on through the door and you can relax. Phew, you made it. Btw, if the boulder gets to the door before it opens, don't worry, you can just wait for the boulder to stop, open the door and jump over the boulder. If you get to hear the end of the music then you probably made it :-) Also there's a fairly important pickup right near the beginning which would be very useful, keep a look out (it's not vital but it is important).

If you're trying to jump up and grab the ledge after opening a door in the wall, then just use action and forward. Jump and action doesn't get you quite high enough for some reason.

In the switch room, have a look around. There's a link you may not have spotted. Also note that there's a closed door underwater at the back and you need to open it somehow...

In the room with a thin film of flesh (ugh!) have a look. Does anything stand out?

If you've just met Atlantean Lara, try to kill her. (Hello, I'm you. Die!) There's a rather obvious trap in that room to kill her with too.

After you fill up the room with lava all over the floor, which knocks the pillars over, you need to make a tricky jump. (This is a solution since so many people get stuck here. I hadn't even intended this to be a puzzle at all!). Stand on the square you entered the room by, and hop onto the pillar which fell over on your right. Then turn left and face the pillar which is still standing. If you look just behind it there is a block that fell off another pillar when it fell over. You can make the jump from this pillar onto that block. It's a bit tricky, but you can do it.

Then in the globe room- if you've played TR1 you'll know there are Atlanteans in those globes. And the globes are situated over the pressure pads you need to open the door. So somehow you're going to have to get them out of those eggs...

And the boulder after this room is the one where you must jump straight ahead. What I find helps is to start running and press look, so that the camera follows her slightly closer than normal. That way the boulder doesn't obscure your view and you can see the ledge. You must jump right at the last minute, right on the end of that ledge. If not she won't make the leap and grab the other side. Just press jump right at the last minute, even leave it slightly later than you might have imagined, and she should make it. Just as long as you don't stay in that corridor when the boulder flushes you out.

In another room with pillars sticking out of the floor (this was the first room I ever built, I just had to put it in :D ) you'll need to make a tricky jump and get to the other side of that pillar with two slopes on it, so you'll need to turn in mid air. Try grabbing the left edge of the first block.

When trying to slide down the slope and jump through those clanging teeth, it's a good idea to SAVE before you slide down so you don't have to do the whole shimmying thing again. Also note that you should jump quite late so you get through them.

If you're still here then you're pretty stuck. Wow. Drop me a line if you want. Either that or you just wanted to read the whole readme file. Honestly, my level IS more interesting than the readme. Don't look at me like that, it is! Now go play!

Okay. Class dismissed.
