Level 1: INFILTRATION

 

After the opening flyby and dialogue between Von Croy Sr. and a browbeaten research employee in a control room, Lara begins during 1997 in a dark storage room somewhere in VCI Headquarters. Note that the Infrared Headset is already in your inventory. Hop over the crate to find flares in the next room, from which there's seemingly no exit. However, part of the ceiling is lined with monkey bar textures, which you can reach by jumping from the low N crate to grab the higher stack E.

 

Pull up, stand jump to grab the griddled part of the roof and monkey swing to the S wall. Release, grab the crack, shimmy left and pull into the crawl space. Crawl around to a larger duct where you can stand, continue to a drop-off and run off the edge. Slide down a couple of slopes and be prepared to jump over a red-hot grill at the bottom, using an arrow key to curve right or left to land safely in a corner. Hop onto the nearer block and shoot the grate in the W crawl space by jumping up and down while firing. Jump to grab the opening, pull inside and follow to a GOLD ROSE for SECRET #1.

 

Go back, drop from the crawl space and jump back and forth, curving right or left onto a corner block. The grates in the N and S crawl spaces won't shatter when shot, so jump to grab the E opening and crawl inside. Follow to a crossing, stand up and go right. Follow around to a floor hole and safety drop to the floor, using the crack halfway down to help break your fall. Emerge on a walkway overlooking a dark room.

 

Go S through a short passage and follow around to the other end of the walkway. Continue N and a door to your right opens as you approach it. Don't enter yet, but instead continue down to the floor to encounter a guard. Go to the SW door, which also opens upon your approach, and enter an armory with laser-protected alcoves. Go W into the side room and turn left to open another automatic door. Enter a room stacked with crates and move the S pushblock so you can use it to jump and grab the crates stacked in the NW corner. Pull up, turn around and jump to grab the S opening. Pull up, turn around, hop the gap and drop down into a laser-protected corridor.

 

Time a run into the first floor hole, stand with your back to the wall and hop out when the laser passes overhead. Run forward, jump over another floor hole and push the E wall button to open a door to the armory. Turn around and use the floor holes to get back W to the corridor where you can pull up S, drop down into the room with the crates and deal with another guard. Exit N and go straight across into the next room for the SEMI-AUTO SHOTGUN. Exit, turn left and go past the automatic E door into the earlier dark room.

 

Go across past the automatic E door and look to your right to see a sleeping guard in the adjacent glass-paneled room. Walk, don't run, around him and take the HIGH LEVEL ACCESS CARD that he carelessly left on the console. Slowly exit this room so he doesn't awake and turn right to face the E corridor. The section just past that gray strip is are unmarked (but detectable with the Infrared Headset) lasers, so take a running jump over the first one and take an immediate left into the N opening. Follow around to the automatic bathroom door and go inside to find shotgun ammo in the middle stall (the other two are empty).

 

Exit to the main corridor, jump W over the laser and go back W past the automatic door into the larger dark room. Go straight through the next automatic door, turn right and go up the steps to the NE automatic door you ignored earlier. Continue up to a receptacle for the Access Card that opens the door to a hallway. Go past the automatic door on your right and search the shelves for shotgun ammo. Climb the central block, face S and jump up to shoot out the grate. Stand jump to grab the opening and pull into the duct. Crawl to a ladder and climb to a higher duct. Crawl underneath some pipes and note the moving laser in the passage down below.

 

Wait until the laser moves past you to your left, flip out and duck immediately upon landing. Crawl E for a small medipack, go the other way and the laser passes overhead, stand up and jump over the red-hot grill. Run forward to the W wall and pull up twice into a higher passage. Follow to a marked floor that will collapse under Lara's weight. Slide down a slope and drop down into a passage with laser-protected openings. Go past the N automatic door to alert a guard and note that those wall panels that are slightly ajar are shootable.

 

Shoot the lower NE panel for shotgun ammo and use the crate near the automatic door to shoot the upper SW panel. Jump inside, turn around and shoot the next faulty upper panel, and continue in like manner, jumping back and forth until you can reach the top of the connecting duct. Enter the E opening, shoot the grate and crawl down to a room with a laser-trapped opening. Note that the lasers sometimes go out for a brief instant, so use that opportunity to get past them.

 

Open the floor trap door in the next room and drop down into a room with the drink machine. You can shoot the fire extinguisher in the other corner to open the glass door, but doing so will sound an alarm and alert two guards and a cyborg. The cyborg's ray gun is particularly deadly, so you'll need to shoot him while keeping your distance. He's slower moving, so your best strategy is to eliminate the two guards quickly with your shotgun, then run N up the stairs and past the automatic door into the upper room where you can turn and fire at the cyborg while he's coming up the stairs after you.

 

When all is quiet again, loop around left from the top of the stairs into the small storage area for a large medipack. One side of the central console has four wall switches. Pull down all four and watch the cut scene after each one. Two glass doors are opened, so exit NE and go downstairs into the W passage where the cyborg was posted. Continue around to the hallway you visited earlier and go straight ahead into the NW passage where the door opened. Examine the wall panel on your way to the next room with two closed doors and an elevator in the S wall.

 

Go to the N wall and left past the automatic door. Shoot the askew wall panel to provide access to a crawl space you'll use later, note the lasers blocking the S hallway and return to the elevator. Press the button to open the doors, go on in and activate the keypad to ride the elevator up to the next floor. When the doors re-open, get out and turn right to activate a flyby warning of a guard waiting around the corner. His back is presently turned to you, so continue forward and turn right into an alcove. Search the shelf for the CLOTH, reverse roll and walk (not run) toward the guard. Turn right past the automatic door into the next room and search the shelf to your left (the other one is empty) for the CHLOROFORM you need.

 

Combine the Cloth with the Chloroform to soak it, exit this room and tiptoe behind the guard. Bump up against him (he won't awaken) and hit the action key to neutralize him. Go past the W automatic door he was guarding and note the caged scorpions. Search the left locker for the CROWBAR. The right locker is empty, and opening it will release the two scorpions if you're looking for maximum kills.

 

Exit this room and loop around right to find a block in the hallway that you use to pull into the overhead duct. Open the crowbar door at the other end and come to a short hallway. The S side room has a chain that's protected by a flame blower. Face W, and when the flames subside run to the chain, jump up to grab it and quickly climb up before the flames return. When Lara's head is just above the top of the grate, back flip into the E opening where you see the flashing blue light. Go left along the walkway and turn left at the N wall to face a swingpole and a flame blower.

 

Take a running jump to grab the pole and swing around and around until the flames subside. Jump off and hop back, grab and pull back up where you're out of range of the returning flames. When they subside again, scoot around left and shoot the SW panel to access a duct and a slope that brings you lower until you can finally drop down to a room with inert shelves. Push the button to open the adjacent glass door, pick up the ACCESS CODE DISC under the hooded garment hanging from the wall and step into a control room where a worker is standing with his back to you.

 

Unfortunately, that cloth soaked with chloroform is no longer in your inventory, but the worker is too occupied with what he's doing to be concerned with you, so go past him to the E wall and use the Access Card you're still carrying to open the triangular door. Enter the hallway with the elevator, get in and ride back down to the first floor. Exit and go N, then left at the wall past the automatic door to that crawl space in the panel you shot out earlier.

 

Crawl through, stand up and shoot the guard patrolling the hallway down below. Hop down and go around to find crates blocking the NW passage. Climb over the crates, drop down and use the Access Card to open the door. Enter another control room with a preoccupied worker, ignore the empty shelves and find the NE receptacle for your Access Code Disc. Watch the cut scene showing a new hazard in the E room beyond the glass panel and go S just past the worker. Look up to find the ceiling trap door, face N and jump up to open it. Stand behind the worker and jump up facing E to grab the ladder in the ceiling shaft.

 

Climb up to the duct, hop NW into the adjacent duct and crawl around for a GOLD ROSE and SECRET #2. Get back to the ladder, climb back down and return over the crates blocking the previous hallway. From the crate against the E wall, take a running jump to the S bridge and continue with a running jump to grab the SW corner ledge. Pull up and open the crowbar door to a new duct and crawl space.  Follow to a room with a red-hot grill floor strip separating facing slopes and a flame-protected corner block. Save your game and jump to a slope so that Lara is facing the flames. Jump back and forth on the slopes, using the left arrow key to bring Lara closer to the flame, and make your curved jump to the corner block when the flame subsides. Run forward into the alcove and confront a closed door.

 

Turn around and time a running jump over the grill into the W opening. Follow to a wall switch that opens the door in the E alcove, jump back there and enter a short hallway. Go to the closed door, turn around and jump up facing N to grab a crawl space. Pull up and crawl around right to a cramped space and a passage protected by lasers. When the lower laser starts moving away, run after it and duck to avoid the approaching upper laser. Run forward and jump over the lower laser that's now returning. Pull up twice, safety drop to a lower duct and follow to a slope.

 

Slide down to a bridge, jump to the SE corner block and use the N swingpole to get past the lasers you saw earlier. Shoot the glass panel in the NE corner and jump to grab the opening. Pull up and follow to a crossing. The NW opening is blocked, so turn right (E) and climb down the ladder to a new area. Push the button to open the S door and face the lasers you recently passed. But first, go back to the E opening which appears impassable due to the red-hot grill flooring. However, the first block in the passage is safe, allowing you to take a running jump NE into the opening. Hop around the interior alcoves into the SE alcove and step into the shallow water hole for the BLUE MAINFRAME DISC. Go back the same way you came and through the S doorway.

 

Take a left past the automatic door just before you reach the lasers and find yourself back in the elevator hallway. Enter the SE passage and follow an earlier hallway to the S block next to the entrance door. Jump NW to the first opened compartment and follow around to open a crowbar door. At the laser passage, follow the laser and use the floor depression to duck as it comes back toward you. Run forward and slide down to a lower passage. Exit E past the automatic door, loop around right and go down a ramp to another automatic door that leads to previously explored territory.

 

Turn left, go down the steps and loop around right to the receptacle next to the N trapezoidal passage. Use the Access Card to gain entry, go past the next automatic door in the N passage and loop around left to find the receptacle for the Blue Mainframe Disc. Be prepared for a trap door to open at your feet and drop you onto a slope. Slide and jump over a fire grill on your way to a tall room.

 

For a secret, hand from the NW block facing N, pull up when the laser moves away and run forward to pull up higher. Drop down into a lower duct and grab the GOLD ROSE for SECRET #3. Go back, time the laser and hop down to the floor. Climb the W ladder between the blocks and stay left to get as far away from the laser as possible. When it makes a return trip to your right, quickly climb the rest of the way and pull up onto a ledge with a flashing blue light in the nearby corner.

 

Go there and stand jump E to grab the swingpole. Swing around and jump off to grab the corner block. Pull up, turn left and shoot the grate in the N wall. Hop N onto the slope, slide and jump off at the last instant to grab the crawl space in the N wall. Pull inside and follow the dark passage around to a floor hole. Safety drop to a lower passage as foreboding music starts playing. Step forward, shoot a guard and go through the S opening to find a shelf with shotgun ammo. Go through the W opening into a hallway.

 

Push the wall button to open the triangular door to your left and go down the ramp to a lower hallway where another guard is waiting. Continue past the crossing and turn left at the W wall past an automatic glass door. Grab the DESERT EAGLE + LASER SIGHT to your right and the glass door behind you opens. Proceed E, look left for desert eagle ammo, save your game and push the S button to fill the room with poisonous gas. Quickly draw the desert eagle and shoot five targets ahead as they materialize and move toward you. When you've done this, the air clears and the exit door opens.

 

Go down the hallway and turn left at the crossing. Climb over the lower crate and enter a control room. Continue around to find a small medipack and a wall switch in the N alcove that opens a kitchen grate. Return to the hallway, climb or hop over the lower crate and turn left at the crossing. Go up the ramp and through the triangular opening ahead. Turn left, go straight at the next crossing and up the winding ramp to an upper hallway. Go straight under two archways, but when you step into the hallway toward the button you can see ahead, the door just beyond it opens and a cyborg attacks.

 

Reverse roll and beat a hasty retreat to the ramp where you can turn and engage the cyborg in a more efficient manner, backing away and taking refuge around a corner as needed. When you've killed him, go back up, ignore the button for now and proceed through the triangular doorway from where he emerged. Loop around right and find flares on a corner crate (note all the cyborg suits hanging from the walls). Go back, stand at least a block away from the fire extinguisher and shoot it to open the floor trap door beneath it. Climb down the ladder in the N face of the shaft, release and grab the opening below and pull up for more flares.

 

Turn around and stand jump S to grab the higher opening, pull up and follow the duct to a crawl space. Crawl around left to face a group of dangling live wires. Carefully turn around and back up to the edge. Save your game, as Lara sometimes fails to grab the edge here when you lower her down. If you can successfully do so, shimmy right or left around two corners and pull up on the other side. An alternate way to get there is to time jumps NE and SE into the respective niches and then proceed. However you do it, crawl E until you can stand up, then run forward until you reach an opening left with a ladder in the far wall.

 

Jump to grab the ladder and climb down to the lower duct. Crawl W to face more dangling live wires. First, shoot the grate across the way, hang from the edge (this time Lara had no trouble doing so) and shimmy right or left around two corners to the other side. Pull up and crawl to a floor shaft. The grate to your left (S) can be shot, so do that and jump over there. Crawl inside and follow to a more open area with colorful floor strips. Find the floor hole, drop down and face N. Wait for the trio of live wires to go by to your left, follow them counterclockwise past covered buttons until you reach an uncovered button in the E wall. Stand with your nose against the wall and the returning wires won't touch you. Then push the button to lift one of the button covers and run around the perimeter in the same direction back to the niche in the S wall where you started (and where you see another covered button). Repeat this exercise three times until all four perimeter buttons have been pushed, the last one being opposite your refuge niche, then hop back and press the fifth button for a cut scene of the kitchen where you lifted a grate earlier. I suspect you just turned off a burner that was blocking the opening.

 

There's no need to leave this niche again. Pull back up to the room with the colorful floor strips and follow the duct to the crawl space. Jump to grab the ladder in front of the crawl space (one that you had no reason to note earlier) and climb up to an alcove with a wall switch that lifts the grate to your left. Crawl through and face more dangling live wires. You know the drill, but this time hang from the edge and shimmy right around only one corner to pull up into the W crawl space. Crawl forward, turn right at the crossing and turn right again into a duct where you can stand up. Proceed to an opening with the ladder in the N wall you used earlier. Jump to grab it and climb back up to the room with the aqualung outfits.

 

Go NE through the triangular opening and go all the way to the N wall. Continue slightly right down the ramps and in the hallway below take the first left through another triangular opening. Push the wall button to open the door to the kitchen and shoot the guard inside. Find the opening above the stove and crawl inside. When you can stand, follow the duct to a dead end and pull up left into a room with a floor hole. Jump into the water and find the GREEN MAINFRAME DISC on the floor of the otherwise empty aquarium.

 

Exit to the kitchen and from there to the hallway. Loop around right and place your disc in the receptacle to open the door to your left. Ignore the cautionary sign and follow N until you reach a walkway overlooking a room with at least one cyborg lurking somewhere below. Turn left into the S opening, follow the passage and loop around right past an automatic door for shotgun ammo. Exit and loop around right once again past another automatic door to trigger a cut scene in which Von Croy Sr. gloats over your impending doom.

 

Quickly draw the desert eagle as poisonous gas fills the room, hop onto the cabinet, reverse roll and shoot the grate over the door. Jump to grab the opening and pull inside the crawl space where the air is clear and wait before venturing further. The duct ahead is protected by a moving laser, so remain in a crawling position as the laser moves right and you turn left to go up the slight slope to a wall button. Push it to turn off the flow of gas in the previous room and return there. Hop onto that cabinet again and pick up the PROTOTYPE LASER WEAPON. Exit quickly, as a cyborg is making his way toward you (you can hear his clanking steps and random firing).

 

Return to the inner passage and continue around in a clockwise direction. Shoot the guard waiting on the walkway and use the passage for protection as you stalk the cyborg and kill him. Go down the steps in the NW corner. You can still hear what seem to be cyborg sounds in the distance, but they're caused by machine activity in the control room beyond the S glass wall. Go past the automatic door in the NE corner and past another automatic door at the end of the passage into a room with crates. The one in the NW corner is a pushblock, so pull it away from the passage it was blocking and go around it to find a wall switch that lowers the lift in the crate room.

 

Return there and find the crate with a crowbar door near the NE corner. Open it and pull the conjoined containers into the room. Move them onto the lowered lift and push the wall switch back up to raise them to the room above. Now go to the SW corner and use the access card to open the glass door. Go up the ramp to the higher room and move the containers into the S room and onto the large orange X on the floor next to the W wall. Go to the device in the center of the room, face W and place the Prototype Laser Weapon on the device.

 

Go back down to the lower room and pull the wall switch down to lower the lift. Move the pushblock there (pause between pulls to avoid a possible bug) and push the wall switch back up to raise the pushblock to the upper room. Go back up there and push the block two times E so you can get up on it and take a running jump to grab the upper walkway. Pull up, turn right and jump S over the gap to find a wall button that activates that weapon you placed earlier and blasts a hole in the W wall.

 

Safety drop to the floor and go to the wall hole you created. Crawl S, drop down the other side and follow the lower passage to a crossing. Turn right and grab the SERVER ROOM ACCESS KEY you probably saw earlier from the other side of the glass door. Continue along the passage and use your Access Card to open the door. Enter a familiar room and run across to the SW automatic door. Use your Access Card to open the next glass door and enter a room with a checkered floor.

 

Push the button to open the elevator door, get inside and push the keypad to ride to the next floor. Exit, turn left and use the Infrared Headset to detect the lasers in the hallway ahead. Crawl to the crossing on your right, stand up and jump over the gray strip into the area with the sleeping guard. Run straight ahead W past the automatic door and turn left in the dark room to go S past the automatic trapezoidal door. Use the Access Key to open the door to the Server Room. Grab the desert eagle ammo on the nearby crate and use the Infrared Headset to detect the lasers blocking the E hallway.

 

Draw the desert eagle and shoot the red handle at the end of the hallway to illuminate the lasers and make life easier for you. Step up to the first laser bank and save your game. As before, the lasers shut off periodically for a split second, giving you the opportunity to advance to the next bank, and so forth. It would be advisable for you to save after each successful advance. When you reach the caution sign and approach the closed door, a triggered FMV acts as a transition to the next level.

 

Level 2: THE IRIS PROCESSOR

 

As the level begins Lara faces two closed doors. One is automatic, the other requires a keypad code. Note the warning of high voltage above the automatic door and proceed to a hallway that's riddled with lasers (as revealed by your Infrared Headset). Crawl until you're about halfway to the next opening you can see to your right, stand up and jump in front of the opening. Go past the automatic door and search the cabinet for another SEMI-AUTO SHOTGUN.

 

Exit, turn right, crawl and jump in the same manner you did earlier (stand just before you reach the shadow). Go down the laser-free S corridor and use your Access Card to open the door to your left. Shoot three guards waiting inside the next room and pick up the shotgun ammo dropped by one of them. Use the crate to jump up onto the NW walkway where one of the guards was posted.  (You can also pull up, but in my game Lara actually went through the walkway and grabbed the monkey bars in the ceiling before dropping down.) Go past the automatic door into a control room with a button that opens a grate somewhere.  

 

Return to the previous room, get onto the SW walkway and into a companion control room. In order to open the S door, you have to shoot the poor worker who's doing his best to ignore you. He cowers, the door opens, and then he miraculously returns to his duties. Go into an outer hallway and face the impassable lasers to your right. Jump up to shoot the grate in the N wall, pull into the crawl space and loop around left to get on the other side of the lasers. Shoot the grate, flip out into the hallway and continue around the corner to an automatic door on your left.

 

Enter the small office to find desert eagle ammo in the shelf. Exit to the hallway and step toward the E opening. Glass panels suddenly shatter to reveal two guards in the facing offices. Open the ceiling trap door in the N office and pull up facing S. Follow around to an opening and stand jump to grab the ceiling. Monkey swing N until you can drop down to a jutting ledge. Face the grate you opened earlier and take a running jump to grab the top of the duct. Release, grab and pull up inside the duct. Follow to openings on either side with a laser passing by overhead.

 

Grab up right, time the laser, pull up onto the slope, back flip onto the facing slope and jump to grab the opening. Wait for the upper laser to pass in front of you, pull up and jump straight up to grab the monkey bars. Turn around in place and monkey swing to the N wall. Drop, wait for the laser to move away, stoop to shoot the grate and crawl through. Follow around to a slope and slide down to a ledge. Drop down further and prepare to engage two guards and a cyborg. Take refuge during the battle between the rows of filing cabinets in this room. One of the guards drops shotgun ammo and the cyborg drops the VON CROY SR. ID CARD.

 

Go to the W door and look at the ID card for the numbers to punch into the keypad (2685). Then press the star key and the glass door opens. Enter the next room and take the IRIS PROCESSOR from the raised slab. Continue forward, drop down the floor hole and slide to the hub room below. Two of the doors are protected by lasers, so enter the N side room and note the multiple buttons. Push the only two buttons without a red dot (middle one W and right one E). One of the emerging cyborg suits spits out the WEAPONS CODE DISC.

 

Exit this room S and turn left past the automatic E door to a balcony. Drop down through the break in the railing and go past the N automatic door down the ramp to a room with crates. There's a small medipack on one of them and a guard waiting for you in the better-lighted section. Find shotgun ammo NW and a receptacle for the Weapons Code Disc NE. The cover lifts from the button behind you, so press it to lift the laser gun you surely must have noticed.

 

Go back up the ramp, use the crate to jump W and grab the balcony, pull up and go straight and right past the room with the multiple buttons to the next room N. Grab the large medipack in the left alcove and past the automatic glass door in the right alcove into a room where the laser gun has been lifted. Save your game before stepping on the pad for the laser gun, as doing so will attract a host of enemies. However, you have the advantage. Mow down the resistance, consisting of a number of guards and cyborgs, by swiveling back and forth while firing at them with abandon. When the enemies stop materializing, disengage from the laser gun by hitting the roll (end) key.

 

Run N, climb the central block and jump slightly NW to grab the duct. Pull inside, run forward to a ladder and climb to an upper duct. Follow to the other end, slide down the slope backward, grab and drop to the room below. Go to the left hand door and punch Von Croy Sr.'s code (2685) into the keypad to open the door. Run up the dark ramp to end the level.
