Level 1: A LEGACY FROM THE PAST
After sliding down to an underground area, turn right and run toward the E opening to awaken three screeching bats. Continue around the corner to a deep pit, hang from the edge and drop to land on a slope. Slide and grab, shimmy right around two corners, drop and bounce off a few slopes to land safely on the ground below.
Pull up E and search the sarcophagus for a NEFERTITI BUST for SECRET #1. Revolver ammo and a first aid kit also appear in your inventory. Exit, locate the long NW ladder and climb up past a wall crack to an alcove. Turn right, grab the higher crack, ledge jump up and pull up near a N opening. Take a running jump slightly NE down to a corner ledge, pull up N and search the near corners for 2 x shotgun normal ammo and flares. Pull down the NW wall switch and continue N into an open area.
Run through the small garden to trigger a cut scene hint, go to the NW corner and climb up W two times. Stand jump to grab the N crack, shimmy right around two corners and pull up into a triangular opening. Flip out the other side and hop down two times next to another opening. Crawl into a small room and push the floor lever to lower a nearby gate. Pull up S, safety drop from the other side and enter the N passage between the statues. Turn right into a small room similar to the other one and search the sarcophagus for an IBIS STATUETTE and SECRET #2 (no extra goodies this time).
Exit to the passage and continue N around a central obstacle into the wide-open spaces of the Temple of Achetaton. Go through the W opening near the fountain pool into a market district, turn right past the well and near the palm trees in the next area, hop up twice onto the rock ledges and pull up E in front of an opening. Ignore it for now, pull up S, hop SW and take a running jump W to grab the jutting ledge. Pull up, hop down in front of the W opening and crawl to pick up the revolver ammo and thus avoid the blade ball that drops from the ceiling. Push the wall button ahead and watch the flyby.
Exit to the previous area and Lara will look up E. For now, head N to where the doors opened and grab the shotgun normal ammo. Face W, jump to grab the swingpole and use it to get across the gap (note the ladder for later). Continue to a ledge overlooking the fountain pool, turn right and drop to a lower ledge for a cut scene hint. Push the nearby pushpiece two times N, hop down to the ground and go around to the companion pushpiece at the SE corner. Push it two times as well and watch the flyby.
Shoot two black panthers from the safety of the ledge, hop down and loop around through the E passage. Pull down the wall switch on your left to hear the chimes of SECRET #3 and a nearby block lowering. Pick up the first aid kit in the SE alcove (but don't fall over the far edge, it's a long way down) and go back toward the W fountain pool area. Turn right at the entrance, climb onto the statue block and pull up onto the E ledge. Stand at the NW corner and take a running jump over the palm tree to grab the opening in the N wall. Pull up and follow around to the other end.
Hang from the edge, shimmy left around two corners and drop down to a short passage. Go past the door that you saw opening in the flyby and get past the scissor blade trap. Turn right at the cat statue and light a flare. Slide N down the slope and jump near the bottom to evade the pursuing boulder. Turn right into the E treasure room and Lara will look up at a wall design. Pick up the nearby REVOLVER and LASER SIGHT clumped together, combine them and shoot the green gem in the wall design to lower a block. Search the sarcophagus for a small medipack, go around it into the short E passage and push the wall button to lower an underwater grate.
The jars are all empty, so exit this room, hop over the hole into which the boulder dropped and find that the S slope has been converted to steps. Climb up to the previous room, get past the scissor blade trap and safety drop to the fountain pool area. Go across to the E opening, climb onto one of the statue blocks and pull up onto the ledge above. Take a running jump S to grab the wall crack and shimmy right until you can pull into an opening. Crawl around to the other end, hang from the edge and shimmy right around two corners. Drop into the passage where another door opened and get past the scissor blade trap.
Target and shoot the scorpions skittering about below. Climb down the ladder, time standing stands past the N and S scissor blade traps and push the wall buttons to lower another underwater grate. Climb back out, return to the fountain area and jump into the water. Swim into the N passage, turn right through the E passage (the words "Challenge of Horus" appear on your screen) and continue to a circular blade trap. Time your way past it into a room guarded by two crocodiles, swim across and pull out to deal with them. Note the ladder in the S wall, jump back in, time your way N past a second circular blade trap and pull down the ceiling switch to lower a trap door that was blocking the ladder.
Pull out, climb the ladder, shift right or left and drop onto the ledge. Jump over to the E opening and go on through to trigger a flyby through the room ahead. Run through the swirling sandstorm, pull up onto the E ledge, grab the wall crack and shimmy right around corner(s), ledge jump up to grab the E crack, shimmy right around the corner to the S opening but don't pull up. Drop to grab a lower crack, shimmy right, ledge jump up to grab an opening and pull up into the alcove. Turn around, stand jump to grab the column, pull up and fight the strong wind to take a running jump and grab the N wall crack. Shimmy right to the corner and pull up into another alcove.
Hop up SE onto the broken column, pull up S and fight the strong wind once more to jump and grab the broken column ahead. Make your way over to the SW alcove by using the wall cracks and face the blade traps that are making all that racket. Save your game, make sure you're at full health and time running jumps onto the jutting ledge and into the NW alcove. Save again when you get there safely and jump to grab the E crack. Shimmy right around the corner and pull up into another alcove. Stand at the NE corner, grab the E crack and pull up two times. Time a running jump SE past the noisy blades and push the floor lever to open a large door elsewhere and deactivate all blades.
If you like, stand jump SW with grab onto a corner column for shotgun normal ammo and flares. Return to the ledge with a running, make sure you're properly lined up and either jump or dive E down into the pool far below. Pull out, enter the W passage and pull down the wall switch to open a nearby trap door and release a pushpiece. The grate to your left remains closed, so go around the pool to exit NW and make your way across the ledges to the W opening. Turn right into the next room and save your game. The two pushpieces need to be moved onto the marked tiles such that they face each other, but if you don't do it properly you'll find yourself stuck and will have to reload.
Move the nearer pushpiece onto the marked tile against the W. So far, so good. Go to the second pushpiece but don't pull it S. Instead, go around and pull it E, then go around to the other side and complete its clockwise circuit onto the other marked tile. Exit this room, turn left and jump down into the fountain pool. Pull out, enter the N passage where the door opened and take the EYE OF HORUS from the alcove plinth. Jump back into the water, get past the S circular blade trap and swim back up W and S until you can surface and pull out in a familiar fountain area.
Go toward the E tunnel, climb one of the statue blocks and pull up onto the E ledge. Stand jump to grab the swingpole and use it to get over the deep pit. Go through the sandy passage toward the large open area and continue S past the well to a room with a fiery fountain. Turn right through the W opening and take a running jump over the lava pit to grab the other side. Pull up and run up the steps to an outdoor area with a central pool. Jump into the water and swim into the W passage to find an underwater lever that lowers a gate elsewhere.
Pull out and go to the ladder in the N nook. Climb up, shift right and drop onto a ledge. Hop over to the adjacent ledge and pull up for revolver ammo and a first aid kit. Return to the pool area and enter the S nook. Pull up onto the ledge, grab the W wall crack and ledge jump up to grab a higher ledge. Pull up, hop to the adjacent ledge and pull up for shotgun normal ammo, revolver ammo and flares. Take a running jump S over the gap, grab the edge and pull up to awaken a quartet of skeletons. Make short and explosive work of them with your revolver and pull up into the W opening. Wait for the flames to subside and run forward to activate the reach-in switch.
The S door below opens, so go on through and note the warning temperature bar that appears on your screen. Run toward the far wall and turn left into a side room where it's cooler. Pick up the flares and first aid kit and go around the lava pool to the W opening. Run down the steps and time your way past the flame blowers (or crawl underneath them) into a high-temperature room. Run to the far left corner, note the closed gate, pull up onto the ledge, turn to grab the E wall crack, ledge jump up and pull into a cooler alcove. Take a running jump N, pull up higher and take another running jump N to grab and pull into the higher alcove. Pull up left two times, take a running jump S with a right curve to land next to a pile of sand, loop around right and use the N reach-in switch to lower the W gate down below.
Go back the way you came (the nearby wall crack makes it easier for you) down to the floor of the high-temperature area and go W past the opened gate (you're safe here, so you may wish to save your game) into another high-temperature area. Go around left and carefully jump the ledges (if you're too close to the edge you'll catch fire) to the floor lever that lowers an underwater block. Return to the safe area to minimize the temperature bar and continue through the lava area to exit N. Get down to the N pool, jump into the water and swim through the W opening where the block lowered.
Continue through the next opening, surface and pull out. Go forward into the Temple of the Scarab and after the flyby, loop around left and activate the jump switch in the SE alcove. Do the same with the jump switch in the NE alcove and search the garden area at the SW corner for shotgun normal ammo. Vault up onto the nearby ledge and go through the W opening behind the cat statue where a door opened. Turn right into the N puzzle room (the spear tiles are presently dormant) and enter the W side room for an onscreen clue. Note the symbols on the S wall, push the W floor lever to open a nearby door and return to the ledge with the cat statue.
The door at the NW garden has opened, so go on through, note the closed door ahead, grab the first aid kit a bit to your right and continue up E into the next room. A burst of warning music heralds the release a swarm of beetles. Run past them, hop into the SE alcove for uzi ammo and into the SW alcove for the ANKH, exit quickly W and find that the NW door is now open. Enter the next room, hop onto the NW block, turn right and take a running jump onto the higher E block where you'll be safe from the beetles. Jump up the remaining blocks in a clockwise direction until you can reach the S ledge with a running jump and grab.
Pull up, go to the wall switch and pull it down to hear the sound of a door opening. Get back down to the ground to find that the beetles have vanished, exit S and continue past the opened S door into the outdoor Temple of the Scarab. Turn right at the cat statue and loop around into the puzzle room you visited briefly earlier. Go to the NW corner and around into a passage where teeth doors are activated. Get past them and place the Ankh in the receptacle to trigger the spear tiles in the previous room. Return there past the teeth doors and find the pushpiece that has appeared at the SE corner of the sunken floor.
Remembering the wall symbols you noted in the side room, pull the pushpiece two times onto the tile with the bug-like symbol. You can walk safely through the activated spear fields, so move the pushpiece E and N onto the next tile with the same bug-like symbol. Push it one time N onto the bird symbol, then pull it back again. Go around, pull it one time E and push it two times N (through a spear field) and the N gate will open. Go on through and up the steps into a room with a central plinth. Take the SCARAB, exit through the puzzle room to the Temple of the Scarab and continue through the E opening to the pool room.
Jump into the water and swim past the lowered block, pull out of the pool with the central obelisk and continue through the E opening to the high-temperature area. Take a running jump from the higher left side to grab the ledge across the lava pool. Pull up, turn left in the next room and return to the area where you began the level. Turn left at the well and place the Eye of Horus and the Scarab in their receptacles to open the door between them. Enter the next room and trigger a flyby through the Sanctuary of Time.
Go forward to the NW corner and take a running jump to grab the crack in the N wall. Shimmy left around the corner and drop down in front of two sets of teeth doors. Get past them, pull down the wall switch to open a door on the other side of the room and return. Grab up W, shimmy left around the corner and ledge jump back from the next corner onto a ledge similar to the first one. Jump to grab the crack in the S wall, shimmy to the next set of teeth doors and save your game in front of the timed S wall switch.
Pull it down to open another door, reverse roll and get past the teeth doors, simply run off the edge at an angle (so you won't land on the bridge below) into the water, swim around the central structure to avoid two crocodiles and pull out onto the bridge on the far side. Climb the ladder on the structure, pull up next to the obelisk, turn left and jump up W to get past the timed door. Activate the jump switch to lower a block somewhere and climb back down the ladder on the S side of the structure. Take the time to shoot the crocodiles if you wish, enter the S room and vault up past the lowered block.
Jump into the pool ahead and save your game in front of the N underwater lever for a longer and more elaborate timed run. Pull it to lower some spears for a short while, surface and pull out to your right (E), hop up S and climb the ladder to near the ceiling (you can climb faster by holding down just the action and the jump keys). Shift right, drop down onto the block and run off NW onto the first of several neutralized spear tiles. Jump W to the next one, continue with a running jump to the W ledge, turn right and stand jump to grab the swingpole, swing around and jump off with a left curve to land on the next ledge, hop NW onto the adjacent ledge, grab the wall crack and shimmy right around the corner, pull up onto the spear tile and activate the jump switch ahead to open a nearby door.
Reverse roll, stand jump down into the pool below and pull out N. Return to the central structure and swim around to the N side. Pull out onto the bridge and go past the opened door into a sand-filled room where you'll be greeted by two bats.
Pull up into the N alcove between the statues to find a wall switch that opens double doors in a previous area. Before leaving, search the NW alcove for uzi ammo and the NE alcove for shotgun normal ammo. Return to the central structure, climb the ladder to the obelisk and jump to the W opening.
Climb the ladder at the end of the passage and back flip onto a high ledge overlooking the obelisk. Take a running jump N to grab the wall crack, shimmy right and around the corner to drop into the teeth-door passage, grab the opposite E crack and shimmy right to the far NE corner. Ledge jump back onto the entrance ledge and exit E to the outdoor area where the level began. Turn left at the fountain pool and find the opened N double doors. The steps ahead are guarded by an ahmet, but for some reason it won't come down after you. Shoot it without fear and run up past its dead body into a room with empty vases to finish the level.
Level 2: THE LOST CITY ACHETATON
Run forward into an outdoor area and trigger an onscreen message while noting that you have all accumulated pickups from the previous level. Pick up the nearby first aid kit and uzi ammo, continue S into a rustic village and loop right around the central building for shotgun normal ammo. There are jars and vases in this area that you can shoot, but all are empty. Continue S toward a tunnel opening and turn left before entering to find a small medipack and shotgun normal ammo between the small building and the E wall.
Go through the S tunnel to awaken a trio of bats. Jump over the deep pit and enter the business district. Continue S into the larger residential district and take a look around. At the far end is a closed ornate door that requires a key. Stay away from any awning-covered openings. If you pull or hop inside, you'll find yourself stuck and may have to reload (although I was able to side flip out). Look for a metallic door near the SE corner of the village that you can open. Enter for an onscreen hint, shoot two scorpions and the jars near the NE corner so you can pull down the wall switch and open a door outside (for later).
Note the closed door and keyhole, get on the nearby wooden slab and pull the block away from the wall. Climb up on it, jump up to open the trap door and use the N ladder to climb onto the roof of this building. Make your way with jumps to the SE building, locate the floor hole in the roof and climb down the ladder in the W face to the sand-filled and web-infested room below. Exit E (you may have to crawl) and run between the buildings toward an ornate wall. Lara looks to her left as she approaches, so go there and pick up the UZIS. Pull up N onto the ledge, slide down E and take a running jump with grab to land inside the short passage.
Push the floor lever to open the door to the Library of Achetaton. Go back the way you came and loop around left past the opened door into the library. Continue to a room with four statues and choose from three possible paths. Go first into the E room ahead, push the floor lever at the far end to open a door and return. Loop around right into the NE passage and follow to a hallway. Go on through and into the next room for an onscreen hint, pick up the uzi ammo to attract a ninja and pick up the small medipack he dropped. Take the LAPIS LAZULI KEY and the ANCIENT TEXT from the pedestal, examine the latter for a puzzle hint and return.
Shoot another ninja, pick up his dropped uzi ammo and go into the SE passage to activate two sets of teeth doors. Get past them and continue into another hallway. Climb the ladder to your left and pull up near a balcony with a wall switch on your left that opens the nearby E door to SECRET #4. Go there and shoot the vase for revolver ammo, flares and a first aid kit. Climb back down the ladder and use the Lapis Lazuli Key to open the E door. Follow the passage to a room with a central statue where three harpies are waiting.
Go across the room and find a triangular opening at the middle of the W wall. Go on through and save your game before jumping into the water hole. Stay low as you swim along the passage to avoid collision problems with the overhead grate. Turn right or left at the wall and go around to the other side to find an underwater lever that lowers the gate to SECRET #5. Swim back the way you came, pull out of the water hole and go across the statue room into the E side room. Lara will look up at the ceiling, so step only on those tiles underneath the guy with the pointed head and the gate in the NE nook will lower. Grab the first aid kit, revolver ammo and an extra REVOLVER in the secret SE nook, then go over and pull down the wall switch in the NE nook to open a door elsewhere.
Return to the statue room, exit N and climb the ladder in the hallway once more. Turn left when you pull up and follow the passage to a music room. Continue clockwise, pausing at the balcony for shotgun normal ammo, until you reach the opened E door and activate a set of teeth doors. Get past them and search the sarcophagus for the SAPPHIRE KEY. Go all the way back to the ladder, climb down and exit W past both sets of teeth doors. Continue through the room with four statues to the rustic village, go across and crawl past the W opening into the basement area.
Climb the W ladder, pull up to the rooftops and make your way over to the NE floor hole. Climb down to the room with the pushblock, pull down the NE wall switch if you didn't do so earlier and a nearby door opens. Exit S, turn right in the alley to see the opened door and drop down to an underground storage room. You'll find the AQUAMARINE KEY on the floor between the crates near the E wall. Return to the room with the pushblock and open the W door with your new-found key. Follow the passage to a small room and crawl E into the adjacent room. Take a TORCH from the SE cart and go to the NW crawl space. Take a step back, toss the torch onto the crate and go back through the other crawl space.
Retrieve the torch, exit to the outdoor village and go to that ornate door at the S wall. Open it with the Sapphire Key and enter the next area with torch in hand. After two brief cut scenes, locate the nearby flame and light your torch. Toss it down the floor hole, drop down after it, pick it up and go to the NE corner. Light the end of the fuse and wait for the explosion that blasts a gaping hole in the S wall. You're done with the torch, so leave it here and crawl through the opening to find a small medipack, the SHOTGUN and shotgun normal ammo. Vault up S into the Sanctuary of Achetaton.
Step forward and deal with two awakened skeletons. Vault up onto the raised slab ahead and jump E to grab the wall crack. Ledge jump up, pull up to a higher ledge and slide down E to the room below. Turn left to engage two ninjas and pick up the uzi ammo and small medipack they dropped. Go through the NE opening to alert a third ninja, pick up his uzi ammo and continue into the next room. The way ahead is spear trapped, so grab the crack in the N column, ledge jump up and pull up onto the column. Take a running jump up NE and follow to block steps leading down to a treasure room guarded by a scissor blade trap.
Enter and pick up the uzi ammo and shotgun wideshot ammo near the NE corner, search the sarcophagus for a small medipack and activate the jump switch to neutralize the spears in the previous room. Get past the scissor blades, climb the block steps and return to the ledge overlooking the previous room to find two more waiting ninjas. Drop to the ground, pick up 2 x uzi ammo dropped by the ninjas and climb up E over the neutralized spear tiles. Drop down into the next room, step forward to activate a set of teeth doors and time your way past them. Shoot the vases for a small medipack and shotgun normal ammo, then save your game before going through the SE opening.
Prepare to do battle in the next room with two harpies as well as Seth himself. Hopefully you've kept sufficient high-powered ammo in reserve to deal with them, although you'll find 2 x uzi ammo and shotgun normal ammo scattered throughout the room near the walls. When peace has been restored, enter the E side room and push the elaborate pushpiece one time to open the S door in the previous room and release two more harpies. Go back, enter the S side room and collect a first aid kit, uzi ammo and shotgun normal ammo. Search the sarcophagus for THE BOOK OF AMUN RA and save your game before leaving.
Prepare to deal with three ninjas and a soldier. When you're done with them reinforcements arrive in the form of two ninjas and a soldier. When you've cleared the area you can raid the corpses for a small medipack and shotgun normal ammo, although the need for either no longer exists. Go back N through Seth's lair and past the opened door to a ladder in the far wall. Climb to a short passage, run forward and pull up several blocks toward the bright sunlight, and the level ends as you run toward the waiting vehicles.
