Reviewer's comments
"Yet another demo which never blossomed into the real thing, for better or worse. This won’t take up too much of your time even on a first runthrough and most of the level is pretty unremarkable - you’ll need to be on the lookout for some spiked boulders and a couple of pesky ninjas will try and steal a few pickups from underneath your feet, but other than that there’s nothing here that anyone other than a complete beginner can’t handle. Most areas are sufficiently textured if not particularly attractive, with the one exception being the underwater tunnels - it’s simply impossible to ignore how ugly they are as the builder decided to not do anything with the lighting in those areas specifically. I appreciate the cleverly-hidden secrets and there is a moment of originality near the end: though this may not seem like the intended path at first, it’s necessary to sprint through some spikes at least once in order to finish the level. I actually like this idea a lot but my goodness am I glad that the graphics in this game aren’t ultra-realistic, because I don’t think I could recover psychologically from the image of Lara reduced to a pile of fleshy ribbons…" - Ejecta (25-Oct-2022)
"‘Demo’ here seems to mean that it’s short and that it ends abruptly, not that the builder ever had any intention to expand upon it. Compared to his later releases, this looks rather rough around the edges: functionalist geometry with some stretched, squashed or distorted textures, sometimes mismatched; water surfaces not animated; the two flybys are gratuitous, both showing the bleedingly obvious (one of them triggered in the middle of a ninja attack, the effect of the other is described perfectly in Orbit Dream’s review). However, as far as 15-minute tut1 debut demo levels go, you could certainly do worse. True, it would have been much better had the Eye door been placed at the end of the level so as to provide a somewhat satisfying conclusion; as it is, you find the two Eye pieces and the door in such rapid succession and with such ease that it almost seems silly, and the level ends on a jarring note when it forces you to run through spikes gulping medipacks—but until then it is an entertaining, fast-paced adventure, without particular interest in the enemy department (bunch of scorpions, couple ninjas), but with some fun, easy-to-mildly-challenging platforming to do and boulder traps to avoid, plus two not too difficult, but nevertheless satisfying secrets (according to RaiderGirl, there’s even third one, which I missed)." - Mulf (04-Jan-2021)
"If I were to make a guess, I would say that the builder of this level didn't have the appropriate motivation to finish this level, even we know that it is a demo, but it had to be more polished anyways... A below average level. Thanks." - Mehrbod (09-Jan-2019)
"This has a very short duration, even for a demo, at only around ten minutes. It does manage to adequately offer enough gameplay not to get boring, with a couple of boulder and spike traps, a search for the Eye of Horus and some fun jumping, but at only ten minutes, it's hard to get too excited about. Not badly made though, although I hated the health draining spike run." - Ryan (23-May-2018)
"Pretty straightforward level, with an eye of horus to find as the only puzzle item. There is a ba cartouche as a secret. Lighting is good as well as textures, but there are rooms that lack of lighting. I didn't like that Lara had to run through the spikes but there were plenty of medipacks to use when she was about to die. 17 minutes, 4 secrets." - alan (31-Jul-2017)
"As a demo and as a debut release, the amount of variation in gameplay activities within such a small space is nonetheless impressive, especially for the time. And while this level does have its fair share of issues(including a couple of rooms which clearly received less attention than others in both texturing and lighting utilization), what's on offer here is adequate to say the least. Recommended towards players looking for a quick Egyptian level to raid during their off-time." - Ceamonks890 (28-Jun-2015)
"The same old tasks and traps and the same old Egyptian environment. Some ninjas and scorpions to shoot and some swims. Bad use of the cameras, they appear when you don't really need them and they don't appear when the doors are out of your sight. In the hall with spikes I was thinking about get the flares near the entrance without damage, but when I used the lever and I realized that I had to run over the spikes using often the "9" key to waste large medipacks I knew the reason why. In some levels Lara lose some health, but it's never good for the players force her to take a lot of damage like in this occasion." - Jose (17-Apr-2015)
"For a short demo, this manages to pack in finding a couple of artefacts, some swimming, shooting quite a few ninjas and scorpions, the odd boulder run and a spot of sliding and bouncing over spike encrusted floors. Not bad really." - Jay (15-Dec-2014)
"Nice level with some good textures, too short as it's only a demo. Gameplay is smooth and rather easy with couple of traps. There is nice placed secret at the beginning." - Casual Raider (23-Jul-2013)
"As a demo the level is OK. In the full level the level builder would have had to change of course a few more things. The spikes at the level end did not have to be. He could have removed that with a Trigger after one had used the ground lever. The lighting had he can make a little bit better. The riddles were ok. He had must still work on the Flybys. Thus the first Flyby was too hectic. The Spikeballs had no sound. If the level builder had still worked a little bit on the level, this would have become certainly a good level." - Scottie (15-Feb-2010)
"It's just a short demo, but very interesting. Good layout, nice rooms, with just a few streched textures. Gameplaywise it has jump sequences, traps, some fights, nicely done secrets. A promising first attempt." - Akcy (21-Aug-2007)
"This was my very first demo and I'm not too sure why demos are released. I'm guessing it's to give us a taster of whats to come but why do that? There are plenty of other levels out there that we could play until the full version of the level is released. Anyhow, this is a fairly short level (as it is a demo), but it is very promising and I would love to play the full level when it is released. I wasn't too keen on the "run through all the spikes whilst using up medi-paks" puzzle but everything else was fine. The level was designed really well and I liked the chambers. I also liked the diversity of the puzzles and how most of them were set up. Just waiting for the full level now." - Necro (28-Oct-2006)
"Here we have a shortish level that will only take about half an hour at the most. It's basically a level that the author tested to show his ability as a first time level maker. It may not be pretty or fancy but it does have a challenge rating that I miss you other tombraider levels. It's basic and has a series of challenging jumps runs and dodging boulders to make this level quite enjoyable. It's a pretty good effort from the author since it's the first level. If you haven't played this level before than give it a go. It's got some good bits and it's thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish." - The Aussie Adventurer (13-Nov-2004)
"That was quick only seven minutes. There is only the Eye of Horus and then ninjas and spike balls. Well there are some spikes and levers too to open the doors and proceed. This might be a demo but it's full of stretched textures and no action. A bit of swimming and that's it the level ends with Lara approaching some double doors and heading for a big medi pack. Will we ever see the full version I doubt it most of the time we never do." - Kristina (07-Apr-2003)
"This is a shortie - about 12 minutes. But even though - you can find some rolling balls baddies scorpions teeth spikes a jump-slide-shimmy arena and some artifacts. Textures are well placed - known Egypt atmosphere. The final music comes early - but you can go on a bit.... Not so many cameras but in this short time it doesn't matter. For a beginners work nice - maybe there will be more." - Miguel (02-Apr-2003)
"Here a level (demo) carried out with the tutorial wad. This one finishes fast 10 minutes for fastest... I found a secret and I appreciated the cameras rather well... on the other hand textures were not too well applied except in some very beautiful rooms. I advise you despite everything to play this level when you need a small break. It should slacken you even if some balls will be put on your way as well as slopes and beautiful points (of which one made me well have patience! lol) Good continuation for this author." - Neso (13-Jan-2003)
"This under 10 minute level consisted of collecting the 2 eye pieces to open the door and make your way to the exit. You have a choice a couple of times between picking up a medipack or an otherwise important thing get the medipack first otherwise a ninja will beat you to it and as I learned later you'll need those medipaks (ow ow ow). Basically linear gameplay pulling levers and advancing some swimming involved a horde of scorpions at one point (ok maybe a slight exaggeration). A decent jumping/sliding sequence over spikes to open the last gate and then try to get to the door." - Momster (23-Aug-2002)
"I never expect too much from demos but I was really happily surprised with this one. Only lasting around 15 minutes it seems each of those minutes was used to its fullest potential so it seemed longer. Set mainly in small rooms that you sometimes come back to via holes in the ceilings this level was not difficult but a final sloping block jump that leaves you precariously trapped by a carpet of spikes had me puzzled until it dawned on me just run....OUCH!" - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Even though this relatively short Demo has only 25 rooms and can be finished in less than 15 minutes I think it is worth the quick thrill. No real bugs in it and quite a fast pace with some neat traps around and I even found one secret. Actually the final deadly march through the spikes took me a while to figure out so try it for a short piece of classical TR entertainment." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a simple little level that will keep you occupied just under 20 minutes. There are no real challenges here but it is a smooth level that will take you away from the world for a while. My only complaint is that some areas were way too dark and there were insufficient flares to cover this which in my opinion the author should have provided." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"This 15 minutes demo is great! We usually don't expect big adventures in a demo level but this was different! It has an incredible unexpected gameplay. The author also shows good use of textures and well placed objects. I am looking forward to the complete level." - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"Most of the time a demo is released the full level never comes out which will be quite unfortunate in this case. Though only 15 minutes long I had a great time playing this level and though it was fairly easy it was never boring. Collecting and using the two halves of the eye piece gives you access to the next part of the level and both parts are filled with surprise attacks from ninjas and scorpions falling spiked boulders and either spike pits or a spike puzzle with some great jumping/sliding blocks. I found plenty of pickups as well as three very well done secrets that included the uzis the shotgun and the Ba Cartouche (although I never found anywhere to use it). Though this level is set in the same Egyptian environment we've seen many times the demo has great potential and I really hope to see the completed level." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"I like the ideas Alex has. Although this is a demo and it didn't take long to finish it was great to play. Nice boulder traps and a spiked trap that had me baffled. I hope he will finish it one day though." - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"The problem with the Tut1 wad is that it's become so predictably familiar. At one point in this level Lara picks up the 2nd piece of the Eye of Horus and the player is immediately greeted with an epic fly-by showing the nearby circular stone door zooming into a dramatic close-up of its eye emblem lock. Does this mean by any chance that this is where the eye piece is supposed to be fitted? Can it be true that I've been getting it wrong all this time?! I have to say however that elsewhere in this level the designer has shown some refreshing ingenuity particularly when it comes to design. There are plenty of 'so this is where I've ended up' moments and the gameplay (for all its short duration) is always fun. The final spike trap is a real and original challenge!" - Orbit Dream (21-Jun-2002)
"I played a great many of these easy and straightforward 20 minute tutorial mini levels recently and yet this is somehow different. Maybe it was just the jump combination with the subsequent run through the spikes that made it so memorable; or the nicely hidden secrets. True you won't find anything unusual here but it's quite interesting how many thrills you can cram into such a short adventure." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
