Reviewer's comments
"I don't see any 'point' to this game. Maybe it was wrong to classify this as a joke level? I'm with Torry's comments on this one but without giving it his high rating. Just giving the 1 for lighting & textures. Couldn't really bother finding the apparent available end of level exit. Because Lucas is a nice person I gave that 1 for lighting & textures, sorry Lucas. Does that count?" - bERT (01-Oct-2022)
"Kill a bunch of dudes, find a hole, thats it really." - JoeTheCrazyGamer (03-Jan-2019)
"It's a nice idea, though the level wasn't very entertaining. Only shooting some ninjas. I challenged myself by making all of them fall to the holes once they died. But that was all the fun. To get out of there you have to look for a secret room in one of the holes. And that's it." - alan (14-Jun-2018)
"Kill some white ninjas trying to not fall into the pits to finally explore all the holes to look for an exit and no more. That's not my idea of an entertaining level. At least there's a finish trigger. Not worth to play." - Jose (13-Dec-2017)
"OK, it's a joke level so you're not expecting much, are you? Bounce across a huge checkers board (or draughts as Lara would of course call it, being English), shoot a small army of ninjas and disappear down a hole. Quirky, but not exactly hilarious!" - Jay (05-May-2016)
"Wow, that was short. Reached finish trigger in 1 minute. Gave a 3 in the second category as the ninjas provided a challenge. Not recommended." - Ryan (09-Jan-2016)
"You jump around what's supposed to be a checkers board killing off a couple of ninjas, before heading towards the finish trigger shortly afterwards. Personally I don't see the appeal, as I'm sure an actual game of checkers would be more entertaining and thought-provoking, compared to the likes of this." - Ceamonks890 (08-Dec-2014)
"You are black, who has to beat the white... literally. So either practise rapid killing with manual targeting, or do the 15-second speedrun to the finish trigger. It is placed exactly where it should be in checkers game, and that's one of two things I like in this level. The second one is: when it's all over, it restarts and we have an opportunity to play without the opponent. SUMMARY: Run or kill. Repeat it as many times as You want. A nice idea to mix checkers with TR, but, actually, anyone can build a level like this. Optional, but not recommended. NOTE: Texturing rating may seem too high for some of You, but I really think there is no need to paint a place like this prettier." - DJ Full (20-Feb-2011)
"Not many finish triggers can be reached in 20 seconds... this does. Apart from that shooting few enemies and searching for the hole; then wondering why this level is so short." - manarch2 (23-Oct-2010)
"Checkmate. The black won. It was too easy ..." - Oxy (01-May-2009)
"Does somebody here know the game "Checkers"? Unfortunately, I don't know, what to do with that. And it is the same with this level. The whole one looks like a colossal chess board. Indeed, all white fields are sunk and deadly. Around this chess board is still a narrow textured tape, the whole rest is untextured and black. Lara stands on one side. On the other side 8 Baddies jump around. If one has shot all baddies, nothing more happens. There come no new opponents and there is no end-trigger. If you have one or two minutes nothing to do, you can play this Joke level, but it is not so quite clear to me, where here the joke should be hidden. I think, only the author himself knows this." - Scottie (18-Apr-2009)
"The start of this level is as bizarre an opening as I've yet seen;a grey/black granite-type landscape dotted with square pits stretching off into the nocturnal distance, with a line of ninja's gradually advancing toward you. If this had been the start of a substantial surreal adventure we may have been in for something special indeed. Unfortunately, after shooting the ninjas and running around the pits for a couple of minutes peering into each one for the way out, that's it. It remains a striking (and promising) little excercise in individualism, however.(Shame about the out-dated and excessively complicated level installation process, though. All that was needed was a simple TR.4 file!)." - Orbit Dream (31-Jan-2007)
"I really liked the idea, but it took me 'ages' to install the level compared to the 31 seconds of 'gameplay', or rather said 'jumps'. Though there are some ninjas, Lara won't get hurt as she can easily get to the 'end' without being attacked. Nevertheless I really had fun - the whole half minute the level lasted. Maybe an idea for a mini-competition to see who is the fastest." - Catherin (02-Aug-2006)
"Not much to do here, all you have to do is jump from black to black tile & keep on shooting all the Ninjas there, the white tiles are fire traps. The textures used are arent so good either. Though I think Lucas had a good idea it would have been if good if the level was a little bit long" - Anurag (08-Feb-2006)
"Sash wrote: "Take a look if you are curious", which piqued my curiosity. So I took a look - and thoroughly enjoyed eight minutes of shooting ninjas on a checker-board and searching for the exit. What a novel little level." - Staticon (27-Dec-2005)
"Ok..running arround a huge "3d" type of checkboard killing about 10 enemies and escape. It took 5 minutes.. 2 to kill the enemies and 3 to find the exit LOL!. Not much more to say about this." - QRS (12-Dec-2005)
"This level didn't make me chuckle but it was interesting to see a TR version of checkers. I have seen a few custom levels with chess boards and this one is pretty interesting. The author made a pretty good effort trying to recreate a checkers game in the form of a custom level. So it can be called a joke level because it demonstrates a certain idea. Therefore I gave a 2 for atmosphere (sounds and cameras are absent. So I can't give a higher score than that). Lara has to kill eight baddies and find a hole in one of the white tiles which would lead to the end of the level. All the other white tiles would burn Lara to a crisp. The lighting is at R 128 G 128 B 128 and the textures are suitable for a checkers board even though they lack variety. Since there are only eight enemies and nothing else (concerning objects and enemies) I gave a 1 for objects." - Sakusha (28-Oct-2004)
"I don't know what 'Checkers' is a board game I do know but that's all. But what I'm looking at here is a series of large dark green blocks with what looks like ice below. There are about 7 ninja jumping about ahead of me on these blocks and they fall into the ice when shot. Had a look in each ice hole and one has an opening in the floor. Jumping down to this end the level. That's all there is to it." - CC (10-Oct-2004)
"1 and half minute experience on a checkers board shooting a bunch of ninjas and finding the exit hidden somewhere on the other side of the board. Well it's a fun idea but only good for testing your jumping skills (well not really but falling down on the burning white squares is not pleasant) and shooting the ninjas without dying or using a medipack offers a small challenge. Try it not a bad idea at all." - eTux (29-Apr-2003)
"The layout of this very small exercise is actually quite appealing and I would love to see it incorporated in a full scale adventure. As Lucas states in the read me this level took him three hours to build and it will take you approximately three minutes to finish. I had some trouble locating the place to drop down to though. Oh well make it four." - Dimpfelmoser (11-Aug-2002)
"What can I say! This is simply a large checkers board where Lara must shoot some ninjas and find an exit which all in all takes around 2 minutes. Take a look if you are curious but don't expect much." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"This is just a 2 minutes net gaming time experiment the first half spent on eliminating the baddies and the second on finding the exit. It is quite fun to see the enemies jumping around in sync and if you like shooting them try this level out for some quick action. As the author includes the PRJ file you could also use this as a basis for developing something of your own." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"Sorry but I just do not see the point to this. Shoot the baddies jump from tile to tile find the exit. Now my hand-eye co-ordination is quite fine but I suppose those of you that have trouble in this area will find this level stimulating." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"This level is by far the most original I have played. It is not in the traditional tomb raider style. All you have to do is avoid the "white squares" and shoot the baddies and leave in a very small level. But credit should be given because it is unique and an interesting use of the level editor." - TrueRaider (21-Jun-2002)
"It was a neat idea even if it wasn't a long level." - Scott (21-Jun-2002)
"I can honestly say this is a totally unique level. Made up of a giant checkers board your objective is to jump from each black square to the next while dodging and shooting some ninjas. Then all that's left to do is find the exit. It almost took longer to install than to play but it was interesting and fun to look at. I really didn't like the textures used though." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a novelty that's for sure. Watch the ninjas or shoot them jumping from black square to black square. Found even some ninjas in the white squares but don't go there yourself. 30-05-2002" - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"A large checkers board. If you don't kill the enemies and know where the exit is you can complete the level in less than 15 seconds. It was a fun idea though." - Magnus (21-Jun-2002)
"Well a large checkers board a cute idea. Keep on the black squares and avoid the white ones. Watch or kill the bunch of Ninjas jumping around (nice thing too) and get to the exit. There are no extras in this level but you don't need them anyway. A very short and simple level but ideal for a quick game in-between." - LaraFan (21-Jun-2002)
"What a great idea! Pity this attempt isn't complete. It's just what the title says a game like checkers but you can't play what you can do though is kill some baddies that jump around you and find the exit. Keep your eyes open or you might miss it. Unfortunately I have to rate the textures enemies etc. and not the idea although I did gave a higher mark at gameplay and of course that was very poor practically none but then again it does deserve something for the effort." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
