Reviewer's comments
"Dreghfetgkhgh. That last secret was quite annoying, as well as putting a keyhole immediately after a closed door so if a player misses the item, he goes far back and forward again. The rest is a nice tribute however the abundance of pickups won't be useful since the game ends very shortly after gearing up. I think it would do much better with a second level attached. Still, you can give it a try, it won't hurt you... I guess..." - DJ Full (13-Nov-2023)
"This is an entertaining but not particularly memorable level that will take most of us the better part of an hour to complete. All of the action takes place in Arctic surroundings where guards and vultures and leopards must be vanquished with the ample weaponry that is provided, together with plenty of flares to light up the few dark spots. Treeble's walkthrough documents the three secrets as well as a torch sequence made more exciting by the appearance of a chicken monster. The snowmobile is made available for a brief jaunt, and everything unfolds rather routinely. A pleasant diversion for the Advent season." - Phil (08-Jan-2021)
"I must say, it was pleasant to return to fairly familiar territory, and this action packed addition to the Advent Calendar was an enjoyable one. The presence of enemies did provide a certain frisson to the proceedings while the appearance of the Talion Guardian monster was undoubtedly a surprise. The gameplay admittedly isn't entirely on the substantial side and there is a fair bit of backtracking to perform, but the snowmobile course proved to be an interesting addition and the three secrets offered an enjoyable side quest. Definitely worth a look." - Ryan (01-Jan-2021)
"I had originally hoped to play all Advent Calendar levels as they came along this year, but as usual, nothing went according to plan. This might be the only one I get to play in a while, even. Still, I am glad that I did. "It's not a christmassy level", they say, but it's still quite a gift, especially for those of us who enjoy The Golden Mask. While the inspiration for some of the areas is quite obvious, this is an all-new level with a rather clever design, when you take the wrong path there's always a quick way back and when you get the snowmobile the level design again proves to come full circle with its many icy slopes. Visually it's also quite a beauty to look at, which helped keep me glued to the screen from start to finish. I didn't find any of the secrets, although I spotted the bars atop the gong I never found my way over there, and also missed most weapons, having found the shotgun by accident, so that makes me eager to dive in for a proper, more thorough raid. Thank you, Astraf, and Happy Holidays! 45 minutes. 12/20" - Treeble (27-Dec-2020)
"The level has many paths you can take and it can be a bit confusing on where to go first. When I drained the water and still could not get into the underground temple, that really stumped me and was running around looking for what I missed for a long time. I had no idea where the key was until I read other reviews. I found it in the end but I almost gave upon this level because of this. They key is white so it blends so well with the snow and is super easy to miss. Other than that, this was a decent, TR2 inspired level!" - Raina Audron (26-Dec-2020)
"The calendar start very well with this beautiful entry who remember me Fool's Gold and Furnace of Gods of Tomb Raider II Golden Mask. The level is not very hard to complete and there are a very good gameplay with a fun snowmobile. It's maybe a bit a pity sometimes to across the entire level and see we have forget a key or important item and search it everywhere. But because the level is not really big, it's not a bad thing because the level is very beautiful. The design of the level is perfect with a very good use of textures and lighting like the original tr2Gold levels. I can just congratulate the author for this marvelous stroll with Lara. Recommanded for everyone." - Bigfoot (22-Dec-2020)
"Nice to play this short level with a TR2 taste. The gameplay is not very good, 'cause if you don't choose the route the builder intended there is serious backtracking. Also I discovered the uzis and the M16 too late, so they were almost unuseful. One of the enemies dropped a white key very very small, and over the snow it's very hard to see, so check carefully the corpses or you'll be doomed. I liked the outside environments and the old TR musics and objects; the texturization is good too. Not really a Christmas level but worth to play anyway. Good work, Astraf." - Jose (21-Dec-2020)
"Lara will mostly explore snowy Tibetan hills here, but also a small lava cavern and ruins. The texturing is good, but the lighting is a little on the flat side. Lara will spend her time riding a snowmobile, dodging boulders, and shooting at several goons as well as a giant bird monster. It's nice that the level structure lets you take the snowmobile almost anywhere in the level. There's not a lot of substance to this adventure but it's a nice stroll down TR2 memory lane. 34 minutes." - JesseG (17-Dec-2020)
"This custom level was really nice level from the advent calendar. It gave me lots of TR2 gold vibes which is always a good thing is do like the original TR2 gold. One thing i found a bit silly was i spent ages and ages looking for a gong hammer but then it turned you didn't need a gong hammer the gong was a push button that spawned an giant bird monster one that you fight in ice palace and the kingdom and nightmare in Vegas which is always a nice surprise. Finished this level found 2 out of 3 secrets and only found the Uzis but luckily there weren't too many enemies plus they can be killed easily with the pistols. I would definitely recommend this level as i had a fun with it also if your a fan of TR2 gold or even the original TR2 then I'm sure you will really like this level." - lokky99101 (16-Dec-2020)
"Here we have nice TR2GOLD styled level. Firstly we are in Cold War/Fool's Gold vibes and some time after we get to Furnace of the Gods style. We have some parkour, small puzzles and riding with snowmobile. Secrets were not easy to find, we need to search more carefully to find them. Not typically Xmas level but still here we have snow environment. Very good and worth to play level!" - BlackWolfTR (13-Dec-2020)
"A level that doesn't exactly fit into the Advent season, but is very good to play. The tasks that have to be mastered are not difficult but well thought out and varied. I especially liked the task with the snowmobile. Only the finding of a key could have been made a little easier, because it was so small and inconspicuous that it was easy to overlook. Otherwise, a level that is suitable for every player. Highly recommended." - nad (11-Dec-2020)
"Although it is the first level of this year's Advent, it not a typical Christmas one. You may wander in a snowy, icy environment, but bloodthirsty enemies are lurking around. You will be attacked by snow leopards, vultures, spiders, armed people and even by a huge yeti as well. The puzzles are nice, not too hard, although the Gong made me thinking. This level is very similar to the Tomb Raider II: Golden Mask. You will be provided with plenty of weapon and medipack, although the latter was not necessary for me.This is a very enjoyable level, the puzzles are not too hard, I warmly recommend you all to take this adventure! The level contains three secrets, finding them is an extra task. Hungaian walkthrough, and savegames: https://treditor.hu/trle/treditor/2020/goldenm_emories.htm" - Obig (08-Dec-2020)
"Overall a charming TR 2 Gold inspired level, not particularly Christmassy but still a nice present to the players. However, I found the gameplay to be seriously underdeveloped in this one. There are no puzzles to solve (except of a simple "push boxes out of the way" one), no real platforming, no tasks, only exploration of the map and despite some nicely interconnected areas, even this is not done in a very flowing way. More than once I followed a long path only to find that I am missing a crucial item and had to return all the way or reload an earlier save. Even following the intended route the backtracking is a problem here. The usage of the snowmobile is a nice but only deviation. The level is also overloaded with almost useless ammo and health pickups, especially since you can drive over many guards, and many passages only lead to more pickups instead of something important. Too much time wasted here that could've been spent in interesting tasks. The looks are rather solid but there are many texturing issues and the end of the world is more than obvious in the first outside area, especially at the very top. The three secrets are nicely hidden, one hardly hinted but still agreeable. Finished this game in 25 minutes." - manarch2 (07-Dec-2020)
"I doubt there are many people who can hear Nathan McCree’s wonderful themes without feeling a frisson up the back of the neck. Certainly it set the scene for me right from the start. This is a feel-good nostalgia fest and, whilst not a Christmas level per se, certainly has a suitably wintry atmosphere. It’s not a long level, but it packs in quite a lot, with a fair old bit of exploring to do, plus a fun snowmobile ride." - Jay (07-Dec-2020)
"(10) Gameplay & Puzzles: Exploration is the main focus here in this medium-difficulty level and it is so much fun, from start to finish. There are no timed runs or tricky platforming, however uncovering new areas (and seeing how different areas intertwine) was always thrilling, as is the combat and of course the snowmobile ride. Now, normally I am quite critical if a level lacks puzzles. While there are no standard puzzle rooms here, figuring out how to get the snowmobile to the area you need it to be is a wonderful puzzle in itself, so I'll cut Astraf some slack in the puzzle department :p There's some backtracking, but not an annoying amount. TIP: you might think the gong needs a mallet, but it doesn't. You can push it like you would a button. (9) Enemies, Objects & Secrets: Since this isn't a "standard" peaceful advent level (due to the fact that there are combat and traps), I do not think I am remiss in saying that I would have liked to have seen more trap variety, beyond loads of giant white balls and a small amount of spike traps. The enemy selection always felt fresh and interesting, with an excellent boss fight about half-way through the game. Object decor was lovely, and while not a secret, I especially enjoyed the hunt for the grenade launcher. The golden bars secret was superbly designed, although I felt that the golden skull secret was unfair and not within the realms of what a player would think is logical. (9) Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras: Aside from the exploration, I think the level's other strongest point is the map layout; in other words, how the builder cleverly intertwines all areas. This was wonderfully done. I enjoyed the classic TR2 sounds and the flybys did a great job of setting the scene. My only suggested area of improvement for this category is that some natural areas look too boxy. An example is the red cave with the gong; the cave walls are entirely straight and rectangular; it just doesn't look organic. (7) Lighting & Textures: Lighting was fine, and there are adequate flares for the few dark areas. I don't think the texturing quality is close to the texturing polish of EotS, the builder's recent release. I spotted some ugly cracks in the walls, and the use of the icy blue texture especially wasn't very pleasing to the eye. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how engrossed in this level I became, despite it lacking challenging platforming, which is what I generally gravitate towards. The gameplay gets my highest recommendations -- give it a go, even if it feels a bit different to the types of levels you normally like. 10/9/9/7." - nerdfury (06-Dec-2020)
"Unfortunately, the only Christmas related thing I found in this level was the slightly visible decorations on the snow boulders (or one of them, at least; I'll believe I may have seen it in more than one). It's a TR2 adventure, built with the TR4 engine, and quite cleverly designed, perhaps a bit too cleverly at times as it can get get really cryptic at certain moments, one of which is that small key a baddie leaves in the snow - it may take you ages and many kilometres before you find he actually left something there, the good thing being you may discover ammo and secrets as you run around like a headless chicken, searching for whatever may be missing. Why exactly did Lara have a hard time in order to empty a pool that could have been left flooded? The word mazy springs to mind, albeit in a good way. I found it mostly enjoyable, hence the eights, not a bad rating at all." - Jorge22 (06-Dec-2020)
"I really enjoy TRLEs based on the classic TRs especially TR2 and TR3 so this was an exciting level for me, the level was cleverly designed in most parts except one area where if you do not do the right thing with the snowmobile there's no point of return which surprised me a little bit, also you get a lot of shotgun ammo and M16 yet the guns are not easy to spot/find, the sound was beautifully placed and selected and I found the level atmosphere and lighting pleasant, I wish the level was long as overall I enjoyed it and brought me so much nostalgia from my favourite TR2 gold level. Well done and I hope to see more of your content in the future." - Lara_Shin (04-Dec-2020)
