Reviewer's comments
"After almost 2 year break from playing custom levels, I've decided to give one of the first ones a try. The Base (v.2.00) by Tomo, a military base style level was a somewhat a good 'welcome back' experience. I'll proceed with caution with my criticism due to the age of this level, however, for folks to want to give it a try I want to share a few of my likes and dislikes. First off, I'm usually not a very big fan of military-style levels, but this one is relatively short and for less than an hour, I've finished the game. The whole gameplay style consists of going back and forth in this base, mainly finding and using levers that open their respective doors, all to find a crowbar. The action cameras showing which door a lever opened, were buggy, hard to follow in fact. However, given that the base is relatively short, even if the camera is buggy or non-existent (which did happen a lot, and even now after finishing the level, I still don't know what a certain lever triggered) it was fast to go through the whole base and find the new area. Overall the gameplay was not challenging, the enemies can be non-hostile, and you can decide not to kill them, but eventually, you'll come across a key lock, which can only be opened with a key that a guard drops. This can be a bit of a 'stuck' situation because if you decided to spare the lives of the guards, you might roam around unnecessarily searching for the keys. So yeah, kill the guards right away (they also drop some goodies). The lighting on this level was very good alongside the level design and textures used. To conclude, I wouldn't call this one an oldie but a goodie, but rather a short experience of the early levels of custom building." - Zhyttya (22-Jun-2022)
"Lara visits a snowy base for reasons unknown, and she seems to have some allies present as well. I'll start with my two main criticisms, one being missing camera cues, and the other being backtracking. It's the menial kind where Lara pulls a switch here to open a door over there, so she goes there to pull a switch to open a door where she just came from. The texturing is okay, but a bit eclectic, giving off a "quilted" look. What I enjoyed more about the visuals was the architecture, particularly the curious stone pyramid in the middle of the courtyard, which invokes a sense of mystery – was the base built here to excavate this ancient structure? The pyramid is topped with a sentry gun, which was satisfying to take out once Lara acquired the revolver and lasersight. The player could just choose to ignore it though, and there isn't much challenge present aside from the handful of guards (and the allies, if the player chooses to betray them). 39 minutes." - JesseG (17-Feb-2022)
"This is better than other base levels out there, mostly because it's set in a more open space and there's more exploration to do. The guards almost never will hurt you, but in occasions it's essential to dispatch them, even for the simple bullet you shot that is not directed at them, they'll get angry and shoot you. There's a lot of backtracking and at some point I couldn't grab a rope, no matter how straight I jumped at it, I had to try lots of other angles until Lara finally grabbed it. The cameras move out of the map quickly to show you what door opened, and it's kind of confusing. There are some swinging blades that don't really damage you, they just send you to the beginning if you're touched by them. The torch appeared too late because the level end was nearby so I just used some flares to light up the cave. So yeah recommended even if you don't like base levels a lot." - alan (15-Jan-2020)
"This is actually quite a decently constructed and well thought out base level of about average length (just over half an hour net gaming time for me) and it's actually quite enjoyable. It's very much in the style of the TR5 Russia levels and hearing those old audio files sent a shiver down my spine. It's predominantly filled with guards, some friendly, some not so friendly, and you may have to sacrifice loyalty for safety of they're obstructing your way, yet it doesn't stray into "shooter" territory. There's a huge moat to explore with a sentry gun sitting atop a huge pyramid that eventually you can take care of and thus continue on. The scenery is pleasing too and textures are well put together. The only niggle would be the dodgy flyby cameras that zoom through walls at too fast speeds, but otherwise, despite my aversion to base levels, I enjoyed this one. Worth a look." - Ryan (11-Feb-2018)
"I really liked the atmosphere of this base level, especially the ambient sounds. It's quite an enjoyable level altogether. There are occasional enemies (guards and dogs), but mainly the men inhabiting the base leave Lara alone. Plenty of exploring with a certain amount of back tracking, but I never found it onerous. Once the crowbar is eventually found, there are three crowbar switches to activate that you discovered much earlier on. Flooding a previously toxic pool enables Lara to access areas previously inaccessible or reached only by rope swinging, which speeds things up a lot. Definitely worth playing." - Jay (07-Jun-2016)
"Even when there are not great areas, this level is very well designed, very realistic. I found no puzzles, but the tasks are entertaining. The best is the good atmosphere created with the musics and flybys, even when the speed of the cameras is too fast, and the views go often out of the world (black). I found 4 secrets, and enough guns and ammo, but the secret revolver appeared too late, near the end of the level. Also I found and lightened a torch, but no use for it. Enemies are well balanced, but the friendly ones never helped me to kill the SASs. I found a missed UW texture, but usually the environments have a good look and they are very well textured. Recommended." - Jose (01-Dec-2015)
"This is a well-conceived and constructed compact base area laid out in a square, with a central moat of deadly burning oil (that eventually changes to water) surrounding a strange pyramidal structure. There are many switches to pull, and often when you do so a door is opened in an area far away with absolutely no visual clue for the player. And what flybys there are operate as if the camera were intoxicated, with the scene flopping this way and that until it comes to rest at the destination. Your main object is to locate the crowbar so you can activate three switches that are revealed during your adventure. This, along with the many switches, means a lot of backtracking in this level, so I finally activated the flycheat to save time going back to previously explored areas. This also caused the revolver to show up in my inventory, enabling me to get rid of that pesky sentry gun. Dutchy in his walkthrhough noted the same confusion I encountered, when using the crowbar in one of the switches showed a fire being lit with no apparent purpose. Possibly there was some gameplay (maybe a secret?) that he and I both missed, but for me the level lasted about 45 minutes from start to finish. Not a classic by any means, but worth the download and playing time." - Phil (22-Mar-2012)
"This is a classic base level and the gamplay consists of finding an all-important crowbar and in order to do so Lara has to do a lot of back and forward tracking between different rooms. I found the texturing, sounds and atmosphere to be the best feature. The enemies in this level are fairly easy; some even leave you alone if you don't attack them first. There is a real nasty machine gun, which cannot be disabled. I found a lot of revolver ammo and the laser sight but never found the revolver so Lara just takes a lot of health loss every time she passes by the gun. There are a couple of odd things in this level like Lara swinging into a metal crane and suddenly ending up on top of it. Also the flybys are rather speedy. Some were so fast that I reloaded just to see what's going on. Genenerally I did like the level, although the back and forward all the time was getting a little annoying. I somehow expected more, probably had my expectations too high after reading the ratings and reviews. Maybe base levels aren't so much my thing. 40 minutes, 2 secrets found." - Blue43 (04-Jun-2010)
"Not a bad base level from Tomo fairly simple just the usual find keys and levers to open doors etc. I like the look of this level it looked exactly like TR3 - TLA's Shakespeare's Cliff with all the textures. It's nice to play a level based on TR3 (as that's my favourite TR). The enemies weren't the same as TR3's unfortunately they were the guards from TR4. The only other enemies were a few dogs and a sentry gun. The good guards from TR3 were about too they had new outfits but were useless and didn't help when Lara was being shot up! lol There is a big poison pool in the centre of the level which (cleverly) fills up higher and changes to water when you pull a lever so that you can get the items you need to reach the end. I would have enjoyed it more if there were sutom tunes (a coastal sound didn't quite go lol). All in all a nice little level took me about 45 minutes and I found 3 secrets. Recommend it to fans of TR3." - Aims (05-Aug-2004)
"Well I must say this was a nice surprise even if there was a lot back and fro in this level. Finding lots of levers and buttons this base level opens up quite smartly. Some of the Guards in this level left Lara alone apart from the black ones so I hardly needed to shoot the enemy. There are however some dogs and two bees so don't get too cocky. There is some nice jumping to do and I must have done some 'illegal' jumping as at a certain point I couldn't get any further. So went back to a saved game and everything went smoothly again. Don't know if it was my download as I found 3 secrets and none of them were roses. The flybys were making me dizzy and I even reloaded to see one after the collapsible tiles to be sure if I saw it right. I jumped in my chair when that sentry gun started to fire as I hadn't seen it. And that underground cave gave me the creeps. 13-09-2003" - Gerty (13-Sep-2003)
"I admit that this level is very interesting and well built. The base is beautiful with the water nearby and all the areas well connected. There is much confusion though and you will have to sweat to get the crowbar. Everywhere you turn there is a door that opens with it so make sure you remember them or at least some of them. The buttons and levers are many along with SAS and dogs to shoot. There was a rope that gave me some trouble until I managed to catch it and swing to the opened door and one slope that was hiding an area behind it had me running around clueless for quite some time until I found it. I found three roses and definitely recommend this; it might be the best base level out there." - Kristina (12-Sep-2003)
"We're in a well constructed and textured base level much more realistic looking than a lot of base levels. Inside the base is a central snow-capped pyramid topped structure in a lava 'moat'. Good ideas of the crane with the rope a very long shimmy while a machine gun is firing on you - you get to blow this up soon enough cleverly disguised spike trap/breakable tiles. I jumped back and forth along the slopes. Passing floor switches that need the crowbar but you haven't got it (now this reminds me of something oh yes Blue Sphere). You get the crowbar very late in the level and again you have to remember where all the floor switches are. I got lost a few times couldn't remember what doors I had opened. I was on the point of running to the forum a few times when I found something else to do. And this is how the whole level keeps you going right through. I could move a dead guy but got nothing from him! The flybys were a joke. It's almost as if the author wanted you to see where you are going then changed his mind. Again in this level only shoot the black SAS guards the other ones are your friends. I really liked the lighting and atmosphere of this level. It's a fast moving level from switch to switch the only slow part was trying to pass the swinging blades. Great stuff." - CC (15-Apr-2003)
"This may join my list of all time favorite base levels. The base itself is centered around a huge pyramid that's sitting in a pool of deadly water and one thing you must do is retrieve the Guardian key from inside the pyramid so that you can open the door that presumably leads down into a secret underground chamber. Gameplay consists mainly of locating switches and the doors they open finding the crowbar to activate a few more switches getting around some deadly collapsible tiles killing a few soldiers and just getting safely from one area to the next and the atmosphere and textures were so great that I really enjoyed exploring this level. This one ended too soon for me. Secrets found: 3" - RaiderGirl (09-Feb-2003)
"The base is a very nice level and easy to play. There are not too many enemies and all the puzzles are 'don't forget where opens a door when Lara activates a switch'. In the beginning of the level you need a crowbar that you'll get almost at the end. Finally I got 3 secrets (of 4 I think) in 1:15 hours of enjoyable game. Only two faults: the camera flyby when the switches are activated is very fast and it is difficult to see where the next door opens and some parts of the scene are a bit poorly textured." - Loupar (05-Jan-2003)
"Well I must say this is the most colourful base level I've ever played and I enjoyed it from start to finish. There are a couple of really clumsy fly bys but everything else is done very professionally and with an eye for detail. I admire the way how Tomo employs my ever present fear of having missed the crowbar somewhere along the way and you will be surprised by the very dramatic and unique placement of the sentry gun. There is a lot of running to and fro and more levers and buttons than I like to see but it makes sense somehow and for the 60 minutes I spent in the base it never became tedious as you generally get all the clues you need. Thankfully there are no crawls or boring climbs so this adventure is rather fast paced. I found three secrets (the UZIs were a bit wasted though) but I'm pretty sure the was one crowbar lever which I didn't come back to. Maybe next time." - Dimpfelmoser (01-Sep-2002)
"With a superb looking environment set on a base but a base with a difference as the game play takes place in a huge square building encircling a monolithic pointed structure with toxic liquid separating them this level just took me on a ride and never let up until the end. Along the way you will come across 2 different types of men but only one will attack so make sure you leave the others alone although I was a little surprised to see the 2 kinds mingle in one room without fighting each other even though both were packing guns there's also a couple of giant wasps and 4 secrets. The only thing that was badly done were the fly bys as they just flew by at supersonic speeds making my head spin so I took a point off for that otherwise this was an extremely fun and well designed 50 minutes level. Here's a hint you may feel like you have missed a crowbar pick up early on as you come across 3 crowbar levers but you will eventually find it so don't worry." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"I always love that camouflage outfit and the desert eagle is one of my favourite weapons. Beyond that this level offers 45 minutes in a Base like environment with SAS a few dogs and two wasps to battle some cool textures which are not always too well applied a really neat bathroom many levers to pull and a bit of back and forth progression. I found only one of the alleged 5 roses (secrets) but missed to go back to two other crowbar levers so I guess these may lead to two more. The flybys in this level need a bit of work the rope swing can lead to interesting (buggy) jumps and I found an invisible door block. Also the script files did not quite work ok for me but I could play the game anyway. The cave area near the end was a nice surprise." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"As soon as I loaded this level up I remembered playing it in the early days before I commenced reviewing and I am happy to have found it again. The base is terrific to play in and explore and if you think early on that the crowbar has been missed be patient you will find it. The toxic liquid is instant death but you don't really have to traverse it more than once or twice so make sure of those jumps. Lara's new cams look great and I really do love the Desert Eagle. All in all a very worthwhile download." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"Great! This is another level made by Tomo that kept my interest until the last second! It is a greatly designed and textured base! Lara will have to push lots of levers and buttons open doors and even enter some rocky caves beneath the surface. Though there were some doors that didn't open I was able to finish this level in 30 minutes. And believe me they were not wasted. Lara uses the TRC Russia camouflage and through all the level her body was in shadows - this means excellent lighting! If you liked the TRC Russia levels especially The Base you will love this! You will even find a similar bathroom! It's surely a must play!" - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"After the effort of placing the sound files where they belong you are rewarded with a brilliantly designed level which is impressive through its great atmosphere textures and buildings. Gameplay is quite linear and difficulty just about right. The camera flybys are a little too fast for my taste but the giant mosquitoes which I had not seen before were great - more of these!" - Qwendo (21-Jun-2002)
"A quite enjoyable level with a lot of running about. Some of the doors don't need to be opened and you need a good memory for where all the doors are as the switches/levers to operate them are some distance away. This is in effect both a criticism and praise: if you like figuring out how to get somewhere only to have to return again having opened a door you'll love this one. There is one bug. When swinging on the rope under the crane over the oil-water Lara can actually swing up and *through* the crane to land on the top (I suspect she's meant to swing to the side and grab the edge but this is a harder move to make). Overall it's quite tricky and I have to admit I completely forgot where the levered switches were so that when I eventually found the lever I only did one of the switches." - David (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a very good level indeed. Wonderful textures and object placements (I loved the Coke dispensers) and well-designed gameplay. My only complaint is the roughness of the fly-by cameras which spoilt an otherwise polished appearance. It's a bit of a run-around (and a good memory is neeeded) but an enjoyable one for all that." - Orbit Dream (21-Jun-2002)
"I think this one was pretty close to the original Tombraider Levels. A really great level with unusual 'gimmicks' like the cool custom outfit a special look for Lara the desert eagle of tr3 and big beetles which I never saw before. The puzzles were also very well done. They weren't too easy but I didn't really get stuck. The fly-by cams were a bit fast and confusing. This could have been done better. But all in all I think those who liked levels like 'Area 51' in TR3 will enjoy this one too." - Surekill107 (21-Jun-2002)
"Wow a great City-Level. The base-textures are very good and the puzzles of medium difficulty. I liked it. The enemies are only dogs and soldiers. I only found the uzi and I found health-packs a lot. I was playing 1 hour and I had a lot of fun. But I found one bug. At the end of the level I found the crowbar and I couldn't open the second and the third door. Only the last door to the end I can open. But this is not bad I ended the level with the blue object." - Andi Croft (21-Jun-2002)
