Reviewer's comments
"This was quite a pleasant little base level, albeit quite brief. The gameplay is linear with nothing too challenging or taxing (although I found the rope swings surprisingly tricky to get past), but manages to sufficiently entertain for the 38 minute duration and there is nothing too tedious to get through. Plenty of crawling and gunning down guards but nothing cumbersome. The atmosphere and layout is quite pleasing and the detonation of the hut and the gruesome find inside was a really neat touch, as was the fire trap descent that required speed rather than safety. Pretty good overall." - Ryan (02-Jun-2018)
"Short (just over 30 minutes) and pretty straightforward, it still managed to be entertaining enough. There's the usual crawling through ducts and killing guards, but those aspects weren't overplayed and if you like base levels, this one is very playable. It's solidly built and the avalanche flip map effect at the end was good (not to mention the blood soaked scene of carnage in the hut when Lara finally managed to reach it). Not bad at all." - Jay (01-Nov-2017)
"This is a pleasant base level that clocked in at 40 minutes for me. It's all fairly routine with some nice rope-swinging exercises that always prove challenging for me. Moonpooka has provided a comprehensive walkthrough, but she should have mentioned that the timed door upstairs doesn't open if you don't wait for the cut scene after pulling the timed wall switch. If it hadn't been for a warning in one of the reviews, I would have assumed that the run was impossible to complete, as the door was always closed when I approached it. After learning the trick and waiting for the cut scene to kick in, I made it on the first try. Aside from that glitch, everything here was fairly straightforward, and I'm still awaiting the mega release from this builder (Spring of Eternal Youth) that's been promised since 2009. Recommended." - Phil (07-Mar-2014)
"In the infiltration through this small arctic base, Lara will do some rope jumps, pull some switches, a timed run, some crawlspaces and gratings to shoot, a dangerous descent through a fire hole and deal with some SAS guards. There are some nice TR3 musics, correct cameras and good texturing. Playable, but nothing special." - Jose (14-Apr-2010)
"I remember having started this aeons ago and being stuck right in the first room (and apparently others have been fooled, too). However, this is a very straightforward base level and quite an enjoyable one I might add. There is one particular room that looks just like one of the areas in the TR2 Offshore Rig levels, but the similarities stop right there. I experienced one particular problem with a grate in a crawlspace (Lara went through it and got stuck offside the map), and gameplay was on the simplistic side but other than that this was a very nice adventure with a nice little touch in the end. 30 minutes, 1 secret. 05/08" - Treeble (22-May-2008)
"A rather well-done VCI level with some very interesting ideas from the starting 'I'm stuck on that high-ledge now what do I do?' bit to the expert rope swing to the secret in the rope room. Research wise, it's pretty straightforward with levers and switches opening access to other levers and switches while dispatching a good load of SAS on the way. I was a bit confused at the end though, since I could finish the level without the Data disk, which was the goal if I got the readme right, and couldn't get rid of a transparent case blocking the way to an obvious secret, no matter how long and thoroughly I searched. Settings-wise, it was clean and tidy as VCI base have it, but the high inaccessible hut had me wonder a lot about the working conditions of those poor Siberian guys. Not mentioning the restrooms only accessible via a ladder from the dormitory, better take precautions before going to bed there. Anyway and joke aside, those bits of illogism kinda spoiled the game for me, and I ended with a slightly enjoyed but a bit confused feeling." - Sutekh (03-Mar-2005)
"If only this hadn't ended so abruptly (intentional as it's the first of a two-part adventure) and had instead built up to a big Finale I would have loved it. As it is you have a superb and quite convincing setting (although the amount of Cola on display in this Arctic Base indicates a less than satisfactory diet on the part of the guards) coupled with an authentic freezing and desolate atmosphere. The gameplay starts out tremendously but gets rather predictable and (in the case of the ropeswings) not a little tedious. However the music has been well chosen and the pace (despite some backtracking) is smooth flowing and occasionally gripping. As a 40 minute Prelude to bigger things this works very well indeed." - Orbit Dream (18-Nov-2004)
"I played this as a stand alone level but you can play this together with Siberia 2/3 it is well worth it. Although I hit the finishing trigger I am a bit puzzled as in some reviews I read that I had to find the Warhead Data. Going back to a saved game I completely overlooked the opening in that ice hut. You don't need the Warhead Data but it is nice to find it. This level takes place in a base environment and the only thing you do is switching levers. There is a hard rope jump to do and you better do that in the evening as it is quite dark. At a certain point you even see an helicopter waiting but Lara can't reach it. The only enemies you see here are guards and one (or was it two) sentry guns but the later hardly bothered Lara. After you trigger four explosions go outside and you see that you triggered an avalanche. Found 1 secret in the rope room. 01-03-2004" - Gerty (28-Mar-2004)
"Standing on a tiny ice ledge high up tried for climbable surfaces all round died each time. Then I read Michael's review about using the pistols. Through the ice wall to a base that looks very like the Offshore Rig in places. Perfectly textured and lighted. In the huge room with walkways and ropes I loved the use of the camera very realistic you feel like you are actually there and I liked those rope jumps. After that it's finding switches. And I'm afraid that's about it to the end. Such a big download for so little gameplay. I'm off now to play the next level." - CC (18-Nov-2003)
"Another level with snowy setting and Lara in her camouflage outfit I like that. Unfortunately the great environment with the toxic waters ropes kitchen etc. is a bit wasted because the gameplay isn't that great. There are many switches and jump switches to flip that open doors somewhere else most of the time you get a camera view the backtracking is inevitable. No items to find apart from guns and it gets a little boring soon but it's not very long and the next part might be better. It has happened before when there is an introduction level and the sequel is much better. I would say to play this level along with the other part." - Kristina (07-Feb-2003)
"An entertaining but simple level. I enjoyed this level because I loved the TR2 Offshore Rig and it has some rooms copied from the original. It's a good level that's worth playing." - Loupar (22-Dec-2002)
"This 40 minute adventure was quite tough in the tricky bits department. Some of the rope jumps you are required to execute are the toughest I have come across. Not only does it take you innumerable tries to conquer the three rope obstacle to arrive at the passageway and flick a switch you then must do it all over again to get back. The textures and atmosphere of the level were very good and some of the rooms very convincing. I found the jump switch in the crapper quite hilarious. I wonder what use that is in there? There was a little too much back and forth covering ground you have already traversed for my liking but all in all a good level." - Torry (14-Oct-2002)
"Big Trouble indeed as from the very first second I was stumped where to go standing there lonely on an icy ledge high up. But what are pistols for anyway. From there it is actually more an inside Base than an outside snow level. Very credible setting very nice textures and good lighting. Good use of fog music and objects placement although it became a little old quickly as they repeatedly showed up. There was an interesting camera in the rope room. Gameplay unfortunately falls a little short as it is basically about pulling levers and crawling through air ducts and make sure you wait a moment after pulling a lever or the action might not be triggered! The triggered avalanche that gives you access to the 'Warhead data' that the poor dead bloke must have dropped and then the end of the level is definitely a highlight. Already over after 40 minutes with only a few SAS as enemies and no secret found but the next levels of the series are standing by so on we go..." - Michael (02-Sep-2002)
"This is the best level Walrus has made so far and even though it took me 40 minutes to play I still wish it had been longer and can't wait to play the next part. Lara is exploring a base that reminds me of a combination of the offshore rig levels from TR 2 and the Antarctic levels from TR 3 with the outfit to match. There are a few soldiers but this is mainly a level of exploration with a few tricky spots thrown in the hardest being the rope swings that will probably have you reloading a few times at least. I found the shotgun and saw the uzis down a crawlspace but never figured out how to get to them - maybe someone will enlighten me. I highly recommend this level - it's fun and a refreshing change from all the Egypt levels out there." - RaiderGirl (29-Jul-2002)
"There was something really nice about this level for me and although gameplay was straightforward with the player just needing to search for wall levers it still kept me really interested. Set in an RX Tech mine you have to locate the 'warhead data' which was wonderfully placed at the end of this 35 minute level in a room splattered with blood and a poor dead soldier lying in a pool of his own blood. There were 2 places in this level that I felt I would never get past the first was from the very first second this level started as you are perched high on an ice ledge and there seemed to be nowhere to go and the second was an extremely tricky rope to rope jump that I must have tried 30 times or more before I suddenly made it and nearly let go because of the shock but apart from this is a smooth playing level. And thankfully unlike Walrus' other works it doesn't seem to be a replicated rendition of an original but the size of the download for such a short level is still just too much." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a quite fun level with some tricky areas and a lot of levers. The texturing is good and the lightning too even though it could have been a little darker in some places (darker brighter some people are never happy). When you pull a lever (and you will pull a lot of levers) make sure that something happens by standing still after pulling it. Most times a camera will show you what happened. If you don't stand on the square beneath the lever for a couple of seconds after you have pulled it the door that should have opened may not have done so (believe me I learned that the hard way). Other than that a nice level." - Magnus (21-Jun-2002)
"Few enemies to get to grips with and the only puzzle is to sort out your route. Switches flicked and more often than not you have to work out where to next (This adds to the game play). Some tricky rope jumps in the middle took some tries to succeed. The graphics textures and cameras were very sound especially liked the camera anglers in the rope room. (Was there anything on the top walkways - never bothered to really look. Worth playing although you just get into it when you reach the end. Scenes 2 & 3 hopefully are a bit longer (or all 3 should be done together?)" - Whistle (21-Jun-2002)
"This level is a pretty good mix of enemies jumping skills and some (but not so much) puzzles. The rooms are carefully built and textured and remind to the TR2 (Oil Rig) level. The gameplay is not that absolute non-plus-ultra but that is perhaps a matter of my taste. Concerning the download size you'd surely expect a longer level but it's rather short with about 40 minutes of playing time." - Sheevah (21-Jun-2002)
"Good level but much too short. Also quite lot copied from the TR2 oil rig enemies only sparsely placed but otherwise fine. He worked a lot with grates and added a few elements from TR5. I especially like the flipmap with the avalanche." - Silent Viper (21-Jun-2002)
"They drink FizWiz Cola in Siberia. Terrific I thought at first finally a level where you don't stumble over a large Medi-pack every time you step on a rusty nail. This starts quite promising. New outfit no dark corners no spikes and a lovingly textured base right in the middle of nowhere. The ideal setting for a great level. Unfortunately as the (rather short) story unfolds the main action revolves more and more around the classic push-a-switch-here-and-a-door-opens there-routine and the compulsory guards with machine guns thrown in for good measure. Well not what I call a puzzle. So for me the biggest challenge came right at the beginning. Maybe it's unfair to jude Siberia this early in the game as apparently it is only scene one. Let's hope there's a bit more suspense and diversity in the scenes to come." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
"Big Trouble in Siberia by Walrus is a very fun level (3 so far)! Has a good bit of Siberian-snow-ice texture which Winter-type-level-lovers will enjoy although alot takes place indoors. The Lara winter-camo suit looks great & there are a couple EXTRA TRICKY areas which ups the anty in the difficulty rating! Also has tricky rope swings. (Hints: 1. Floor grate in Scene 2 that leads to scarab beetle infested tunnel: must position yourself just right for Lara to lift it open! 2. Scene 3: SHOOT the 'red engine' alot until starts operating! It has good atmosphere textures & snow-suit clad enemies which I like to see but aren't too difficult to kill. Are plenty pickups & alot of special places to get to & figure the ways out. Overall a VERY ENJOYABLE project with the view of a GREAT overall level series-game in progress! I just hope Walrus continues this story w/more wonderful sights & sensations." - IndyDallasJones (21-Jun-2002)
