Since the time of Alfred The Great (871 A.D.), until the time of Harold II, the Saxon kings had been bearers of a powerful jewel. It was said that this jewel, if bourn at the head of an army, would ensure victory against any adversary.

When William the Conqueror invaded Britain in 1066, and defeated Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, the Jewel was taken into hiding by the 'Keepers of Lineage', an order who had sworn to protect the gem, ensuring it was only passed on to those in line to the Saxon throne. They called the Jewel The Heart of the Saxons.
