Reviewer's comments
"I remember having started this level when it was first released, way back in the Lara's Home days, but not making too far into it. I never was one for Catacomb.WAD levels (with a few exceptions) but much to my surprise, I quite enjoyed my time here. Granted, I decided to use Gerty's walkthrough from start to finish to ensure I'd reach the finish trigger so I never wandered. The underwater maze was too big for its own good, and it happens rather early, but from that moment forward there were nice platforming sequences around large indoor areas. Nothing that breaks the mold, but still a fun and engrossing raid. 30 minutes, 1 secret. 02/21" - Treeble (28-Feb-2021)
"This is a very nice level catacomb with exploration, some enemies but not very difficult to get rid of, many platforms with very large rooms well built. It is well textured and illuminated, a pity that water textures are not animated. The only dark spot for me was this submarine maze. Recommended." - Drakan (16-Dec-2018)
"I quite enjoyed this older 40 minute Catacomb level from the early years. The enemies are the usual variations: skeletons, wraiths and beetles, but the setting is solidly crafted, and not too dark (I do hate stumbling around in pitch black areas for ages). A few small puzzles to solve, involving pushable pillars, plus an underwater maze (bit of a downer), use of the laser sight and some traps. Recommended if you're after an enjoyable raid in a classic setting." - Ryan (05-May-2017)
"Not a jewel of the custom levels but well playable this catacomb level with an old style. Sekeletons and mummies here and there but also the grenade launcher with ammo enough, some wraiths, some traps, some moveables, not clever puzzles but a lot of gymnastics and a lot of water rooms in the first part. There are some camera hints, even if the triggered object is very near, like at the end of the level. Take a try, 'cause it's entertaining if you like the classic levels." - Jose (19-Nov-2013)
"I found this to be a delightful romp in the Old School style of the Catacombs. At 8 years it must be considered an older level by LE standards, yet I had a great time playing it for the 50 minutes or so that it lasted. The environs are scenic and well lighted. Everything progresses quite logically, and helpful cut scenes abound, but I was still assisted by Gerty's workmanlike walkthrough. As astute observers may have noted, I'm playing and reviewing these levels in reverse order of their scores, and there are many older gems in that vast storehouse of levels rated between 7.0 and 8.0. Give this one a try if you don't remember having played it before. Recommended." - Phil (30-Nov-2012)
"Although by no means a classic, this is one of those polished little adventures (and there are many of them out there) which provides 45 minutes or so of good all-round entertainment.Everything is standard Catacomb, but used rather well: enemies attack at generally inconvenient moments;texturing is effective and rather creative;atmosphere is potent and the architecture is often quite beautiful. In fact,it's worth playing this (and drowning several times in a rather confusing underwater labyrinth) just to experience the beauty and grandeur of the final two rooms, which also incorporate gameplay ingenously into their geography. Progression is pretty fluid provided you look around thoroughly, and this is altogether a thoroughly pleasing (if standard) Egyptian experience." - Orbit Dream (21-Jan-2008)
"Here's a nice traditional catacomb-style level. Spikes skellies boulders - the usual suspects - plus quite a lot of swimming some of it very challenging (or at least I found it so). I got stuck for a while because I failed to spot a vase to shoot - you really need to look around most carefully once you get the revolver and laser sight. If you like a more traditional raid then this one should suit you very well." - Jay (18-Dec-2004)
"A good and atmospheric catacomb level. The author proves to master well this Wad with the use of expanding platforms two block platforms animating objects raising blocks etc... and also the use of the trigger_triggerer and flipmaps. It was fun the time it lasted (45 minutes) my favourite moment was when Lara is chased by an angry spirit and has to find the bird statue after a series of slopes and traps. The other enemies are no great threat though as three grenade guns can be found. Only one easy secret it's a shame as there was room for more than one in this good environment. Solid building and texturing although the texturing and lighting can be improved but they are minor complaints. I recommend this level its course is entertaining." - eRIC (13-Dec-2004)
"A nicely designed catacomb level with good lighting and atmosphere. The gaming is smooth and won't hold anyone up for very long unless you overlook one shootable object like I did thanks to the walkie for opening my eyes. The only downsides are that the one secret was practically impossible to miss and there were three grenade guns to find so skeletons and mummies were no bother though the two wraiths had me running wildly for my life. For a medium raid this is a really good place to look but if you want something that is a little more challenging this 40 minute level may be one to put away for a rainy day." - Sash (29-Nov-2004)
"Catacombs level seem to be very much in fashion again and this one is also very solidly built and provides 40 minutes of not so taxing entertainment. You get several grenade guns (one of them the only secret near the start) to deal with the few skeletons and have to deal with the usual boulder and spike traps pushable objects wraiths darts mummies and so on. I absolutely hated the underwater maze area but the huge room later and the path around it was good fun the waterfalls are effectively placed to create a decent atmosphere and the water flip effects are interesting." - Michael (22-Nov-2004)
"Another level by Gerbil where you do not need the revised wads for this to play. A simple catacomb level although not that simple if you get my drift. Getting the Portal Guardian is your main goal here. A nice warm up for all the other catacombs levels that will be released in January. I liked this one and although I drowned a lot the underwater part wasn't too bad as long as you could find some air holes. I liked the room with the waterfalls the best. Found three Grenade Launches that is a bit of an overkill though. 07-11-2004" - Gerty (21-Nov-2004)
"I thoroughly enjoyed this catacomb level. Everything was laid out very nicely and well placed lighting and textures were superb. The most difficult bit for me was the water maze so I drowned quite a few times in getting to where I supposed to. Puzzles were fairly easy to solve but you come across a few enemies like skeletons mummies and a few wraiths but luckily you have the grenade launcher and plenty of ammo to take care of the skeletons. I'm not sure how many secrets there were as I only found one but I completed the game without looking at the walkie so finding all the secrets didn't really bother me. It's a fairly short level but well worth the d/load so thank you Gerbil for another great Lara adventure." - Gill (20-Nov-2004)
"This is an enjoyable catacomb-style level with the types of challenges one would expect. The hardest parts are keeping Lara from drowning especially after a significant pickup. The author has shown great progress in gameplay and stability. Though the author uses lighting well there still the tendency to apply textures without a sense of design. Many rooms have different textures applied to adjacent squares which looks like a quilt rather than architecture. Congratulations and I am looking forward to the next one." - Duncan (14-Nov-2004)
"This was a very fun level. Here we are in a catacomb environment with nicely designed large rooms with plenty to do some good puzzles here and there too. This level is quite linear but it was still fun with nicely textured areas enemies placed in the right places and the same goes for the traps. It was a pity though that this level ended in just under half an hour and I do wish that it could have been longer. Seeing as how good this level was I'm sure that Gerbil's next level will be even better." - Relic Hunter (11-Nov-2004)
"It's been a while since I have played a nice Catacomb level :-). Puzzles are fairly easy to solve. Lara only needs to find the portal guardian master a few traps and a water maze. Sound and Atmosphere came across well. Enemies were mainly skeletons and a few mummies. Gaming fun was solid and you can easily play it through. :-))" - Engelchen Lara (08-Nov-2004)
"I like catacomb levels and this was one of the nicest I have played. The atmosphere is great the puzzles though might not be so great but are nicely done and the enemies which are skeletons mummies and small beetles were placed in the right areas. There is a portal guardian to find some objects to move and do take your time to look around. Definitely the best level the author has built so far in my opinion. There is one easy secret to find but there were some nice places to hide a couple more. I'd say keep up the good work I am sure the next level will be a big hit." - Kristina (06-Nov-2004)
