Reviewer's comments
"Simple raid rather well built with a bit of backtracking. The 2 or 3 enemies are well placed , at least the shotgun taken from the nija was useful to kill a scorpion. 5 minutes, included the climbing back of the slide at the beginning to get a big medipack. Too bad we haven't seen something else from this builder." - eRIC (21-Feb-2022)
"A literal run back and forth, providing around 5-10 minutes of gameplay depending on whether you want to find the Uzi's. This definitely is a demo. I enjoyed seeing the big room with the doors for the star. but that's about it, wouldn't recommend unless your just playing TRLE levels one by one." - ColeMoles (19-Feb-2022)
"Gameplay? What gameplay? You run, then dive, then shimmy through the handful of rooms of which this tiny map consists until you reach a door that requires a Hand of Orion. A nearby lever (highlighted by an overly helpful flyby) triggers an underwater gate half the map away, so you go back there and retrieve the Hand, then return to the door to use it. That’s the level. It’s just backtracking, all of it. You go the same route three times, bogged down by a shimmy you have to do each time.
This brief ‘preview’ of a level (which is all there is of it) is another very early, and dare I say premature, effort. Its best bit comes right at the start, but it’s optional (retrieving a big medipack). The secret hinges on an unmarked climbable wall, so it’s uninteresting, and going back up from there is a tedious affair. The texturing is good for the most part (though textures are distorted on triangles, and stretched precisely in those places where you’d expect), and there’s lighting, but it’s inconsistent and not particularly atmospheric. The level features some interesting room geometry—not a thing you often see in debut levels—, and three reasonably well-placed enemies, but, well, it’s Tut1.
After a few minutes the level ends as you enter a hallway decorated with shootable vases. You can’t reach them because you hit the finish trigger as soon as you’ve made a few steps inside, but you can shoot all four from the entrance. They’re all empty. I might have been impressed if the builder had placed an interesting unreachable item in one of them." - Mulf (09-Jul-2021)
"Another pretty short TR4 level with tons of big rooms without anything specific to commend. Gameplay and puzzles were poor, as finding The Hand Of Orion was piece of cake, nothing to think or worry about. Very few decorative objects and enemies were found. Atmosphere and sounds were not appreciative at all, especially the sounds, because all of the SFX files were cut short, in order to reduce the level's file size, and you can realize it yourself by taking the camera into a water room, and you'll hear a jumpy water loop sound. But, I was satisfied with one element within this game, and that was Lighting and Textures. To be honest, lighting and texturing job was done nicely by the builder. Last but not least, this level is recommended for players who are not looking for anything special, nor for a long gameplay, actually. Thank you!" - Mehrbod (07-Aug-2018)
"Another very short level with big rooms but very few tasks to do. The only interest here is to find the lonely secret. The tasks are only pull a switch to open a door, shoot a ninja and two red scorpions and take a swim to get the hand which opens the exit door. Nothing more. The lights are well worked, but the textures are usually elongated. Only a flyby to create ambience and the shotgun to pick up. I think the author only wanted to take a try with the level editor." - Jose (06-Nov-2017)
"It's a short demo level so there's not much to be expected here, but I still enjoyed myself. I liked how the Uzi was hidden in the place you would least expect (although it was painful to climb all the way back after!), and I liked figuring out how to get the medipack in the corner of the starting room. The gameplay was easy with few traps or enemies to be found, and there still definitely could have been more here, even for a demo." - Ejecta (04-Nov-2017)
"A short demo level with some nice surroundings and well used textures, I especially liked the ones underwater. Gameplay is about shimmying in a tall rock, pulling a lever, swimming and finding a star to the level end. Enemies are scorpions. Found the secret uzi." - alan (01-Jun-2017)
"This may only be a (very) short taster, but I felt there was potential here, even if it didn't quite come to light here. Gameplay can't be scored highly as there is very little of it, but the sole flyby was well done and there were no noticeable texture errors. Looking at the 16 year gap between the release date and now, it doesn't look like the full version will be forthcoming any time soon. Ah, well." - Ryan (09-Aug-2016)
"It's unfortunate that this level creator's track ended so soon after it started, because there was some obvious potential in them. While being their only level, the preview for the Lost Tomb of Ormaez displayed competent lighting and a decent atmosphere. Each room felt unique, but never out of place. The level's weakest trait is probably the lack of diverse gameplay, but it's difficult to pump a lot of that into only 5-7 minutes of raiding. Overall, I'd say this was an excellent start to a beginner's level. It's just too bad that it hasn't reach completion as of this review nearly fourteen years later." - Xela (15-Jun-2014)
"It's a shame that this builder only made this brief (7 minutes) demo level and then apparently lost all interest in building because his potential shines through even in such a short taster. There's little to do apart from a brief exploration and shooting a ninja and two scorpions and it ends just as Lara places a Hand of Orion and enters a new area. There is a generous Uzi secret to find also, but of course you won't get the chance to use it. I should very much like to have seen more." - Jay (05-Mar-2014)
"Doing something a little different, I've decided to delve far back into the early beginnings of the TRLE community and work my way up from there, in-between droughts of new releases in the alphabetical order of builder names. To start off, this first(and only)level release from Anthony Sherratt, doesn't really offer anything special by today's standards, lasting 5-10 minutes at most with it ending rather abruptly, after backtracking to place a hand of orion in the appropriate slot to open the tomb doors and proceed forward. Texturing and lighting is competent for the most part however, but the gameplay itself is rather dull and unremarkable. Although, if you're looking for a quick level to satisfy your tomb raiding cravings, than this will most certainly do the job for you. But it's probably not gonna rank among many player's most memorable raids." - Ceamonks890 (05-Mar-2014)
"I was searching the list upside down for something short, and this was pretty much an apt choice. The whole thing doesn't even last five minutes, and only because there is some reasonable backtracking involved in the latter half. There's not much to write home about here, but I'd like to say that the appearance of the level is rather solid and apart of the deep pits (with streched textures) the looks are decent enough for such an early release, there's even a short flyby and a secret for the enjoyment. Still, the gameplay is fairly boring with using a lever and finding one item, plus the mentioned backtracking, but this game's not unentertaining for the restricted time it takes you to finish." - manarch2 (25-Jan-2014)
"As a level it's boring and short, but as a preview level it's not bad and it might be good beginning for something longer." - Casual Raider (17-Jul-2013)
"The preview part of the title should've been a dead give-away, so I'm not sure why I was surprised by the abrupt ending 5 minutes into the game. Maybe it's because the long hallway with the vases promised for there to be so much more to come? Either way - the 5 minutes are not anything memorable by nowadays' standards, but are actually not that bad too. Besides some wall-papering and stretched textures, the looks are done competently enough for a tut1 experience, with some nice initial attempts at lighting and crafting the areas. The gameplay sends you back and fro through the small area - first to open a door, then to get a hand of Orion, exploration for some goodies if you're so inclined, but ends in the said hallway where you use the hand. Maybe it would've been a better approach to release the entire thing when the author was done with it, but then again - maybe this whole preview shenanigans was just an excuse to ditch the project (and hobby, judging that this is the only thing we've seen from the author 11+ years into the level building scene) anyway?" - eTux (21-Oct-2011)
"A debut level. With 10-minute playing time very short. There is not much to do. One must swim only a little, pull a lever, find the Hand of Osiris and open with her the door at the level end. Opponents were two small scorpions and a Baddie. 10-minute playing time, however, even because I have gathered everything what lay about there. If one does not make it, because one does not need the things like Medipack, weapon and ammunition anyhow, the playing time decreased itself to 5 minutes.
Here the level builder has given effort himself with the first work. No stretched textures, no gigantic rooms and attractively built. What more could one wants. Well, ok, the level could have been quite a little longer. But everybody starts sometimes. And this beginning is not so bad at all." - Scottie (09-May-2011)
"Really only looses marks for length here. There's some nice large creative spaces throughout the level, with the lighting and texturing being pretty good throughout. Completed in around 9 minutes, but enjoyable never the less." - TheStig (16-Dec-2009)
"This is a nice little level and it was a shame that it was short. At first, I thought that the level had crashed. i wasn't expecting the level to end when it did. This is basically a short quest to find a key for a door but there are some nice ideas and it seems to me that this may be the authors first attempt and so I could be forgiven to suggest that he is testing the editor and seeing what you can do with it. Everyone's gotta start somewhere and if his future levels are like this and if he implements some great puzzles, then I will certainly look forward to playing them. (Just noticed that on the website it says that it's a preview so its all understandable)" - Necro (20-Nov-2007)
"It's dated 2000, so now it will never be finished, too bad because the author did an okay job. Good use of textures, a nice jump series at the beginning for the medipack. If only it wasn't so short." - Akcy (19-Nov-2007)
"Even though there are only 11 rooms, and this preview is five minutes long, I nonetheless found it promising. It would've been nice to see the full version, but this preview shows that this level has some potential. Enemies consist of two scorpions and a ninja, I appreciated the shimmying sequence, and the textures were well-applied. I didn't find the secret (the hidden uzis, according to the readme), but I managed to obtain a medipack, flares and a shotgun. The goal is to find the hand of Orion, but after the player opens the door, the level ends suddenly. I would like to know what is beyond the room with the four vases." - Sakusha (04-Jun-2006)
"For a preview level, this is very short indeed. It took me about 10 minutes to complete and felt like I wanted some more cause it had a lot of potential. However, it has not been made since and thus, left unfinished. Since the level is so short there's not much to comment on other than it had nice texturing, some gameplay elements, too fewer enemies and not enough of anything really. I could really only recommend this level if you only a had a few minutes to play and didn't want anything complex or ingaging. If I had to give this level a grade, I would give it a D, a fail mark." - The Aussie Adventurer (07-Mar-2005)
"I am positive I have played the full version of this the opening gambit was just so familiar. OK as stated this is but a preview and as such takes only five minutes but if it is the start of the level I am thinking of why is it still in the list of downloads? Surely it should be removed. Other than that it is a very simple five minutes that has you locating a hand of something or other placing it and ending the 'preview'." - Torry (26-Jan-2003)
"For someone's first level this is very very good. Nice textures and lighting. I look forward to more from this author. Find a star and open a door. Very short but good quality." - Doug E (01-Dec-2002)
"It's harder than it looks being a Custom Level Builder you know; and The Lost Tomb of Ormaez proves this. After all the demo was built 18 months ago and it would appear that the designer has given up. You need to sit at your PC/Mac for many weeks if not months simply to have someone come along play your level and write 'give this one a miss' in their review. I ask you! It's a tough hobby indeed as Anthony Sherratt clearly discovered. To give myself a frisson of excitement as I played this I decided to complete the entire level without saving. Not even once. Wasn't that a daring and outrageous thing for me to do? Well it was; because I can't tell you exactly how long it took me as there were no 'save' statistics to handily refer back to. I estimate around 7 minutes. And there's not much more to say really. The textures were ok and the gameplay pretty much non-existent; so don't worry Dimpf. This is one Jury member who won't score it highly." - Orbit Dream (23-Sep-2002)
"It's the August of 2002. This preview for a putative Tutorial adventure was released on the 22. December in the year 2000. Well I have to say the production of the full scale level takes an awful lot of time as we haven't heard anything since. On the other hand we've seen more tantalizing demos than the Lost Tomb of Ormaez. You get 11 rooms two scorpions one lever and five minutes of gameplay. The underwater room was nice though. I find it kind of alarming that a member of the Jury has awarded the non existent gameplay with 7 points. Can someone explain this to me? Have I missed something? Is this one of these levels were by accident you can stumble through the exit without having experienced any of the wonders tasks and traps that this level has to offer?" - Dimpfelmoser (16-Aug-2002)
"I almost feel guilty reviewing this 6 minute level but it is on the list LOL. What a shame this never came to be a complete level as it looks promising. Very nice atmosphere and textures. Lots and lots of pickups which would be fun if you were going to use them. A good puzzle and a shimmy to flip a lever and end the preview." - Momster (13-Aug-2002)
"The only reason this level got such a low rating by me is that it is only a preview and is over in less than 10 minutes but it has a great organic feel with the nice use of large mountainous mounds of dirt inside and greenery underwater. All I can say is I look forward to playing the full level." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"It almost takes longer to install than to play with its 5 minutes of net gaming time but the texturing and lighting looks promising. This could have become a great level but as far as I know never got beyond preview/demo stage. A pity really." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a very short preview level (10 minutes) and Lara has to find her way out of the tomb. The texturization is good the few objects placed were well hidden and nothing else. I am waiting for the full version of this level!" - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"Like the creator says this is just a preview and therefore very short at around 10 minutes playing time. However I think it shows a lot of promise and hope to see a full level by this person. There were nice textures used throughout the level and few but nicely placed enemies. The read me file with the download has a list of all the pick-ups found in the level and I had a lot of fun finding all of them. He's very good at hiding things - the uzis especially were hidden in a very clever place." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Preview the word says it all. A teaser. Fun was the get all the goodies the author put in his read me file. I would never have looked for the large medpack or the uzi. So now we'll wait for the full level and I hope it won't take long." - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"It was indeed short less than ten minutes as it was expected. The author explains at the readme file that it is only a preview and the title also indicates it. From what I could see though it was a good start with two baddies and two to three scorpions plus one puzzle. All you have to do is find the goodies if you want all of them and shimmy to another area with a lever. That action opens the way to the hand and as Lara is getting ready to smash some vases the level ends. It has a nice atmosphere and good textures in an Egyptian environment with a little bit of a cave in it. Take a look at it." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
