Reviewer's comments
"I remember Roberto's first level well and what I wrote back then that we might have had a new promising builder on our hands. So this was his second one apparently and intended to be one of a series of levels but unfortunately he stopped building after this one. Probably the reason you end this level with some items never used (or otherwise I was too stupid to find out where to use them). Ah well, I am glad that Roberto finally revealed to the whole world what I really knew already: the Croft woman is just a sick gold digger! Yes folks, we were tricked by Lara. Take down all those posters of her in your bedroom, she belongs in jail, period. Just go down and you'll see what I mean. And indeed, just like in his first level, you do have to go down deep but not in a museum but into the underground of her mansion. Apparently she is also a fan of Roberto (I think some of the photos on her walls are of him?) so they may be in cahoots to rip us off! Shame on you both! All kidding aside, it's a short level but enjoyable. The only 'puzzle' really that got me stuck for a while was to figure out how to get up again instead of down. But you'll figure it out. What I missed this time were his great use of camera's like in his first level. A nice in between level though for a nice stroll through Lara world." - bERT (02-Oct-2022)
"its nice to look around and explore around this mansion, i love the music, atmosphere, and colored lighting in the trophy room and some parts are intriguing like the huge treasure room underground, but apart the usual finding keys, switches and items to progress and a few pushable items theres not much else to do really, because its lacking in any puzzles, traps or interesting tasks i found myself a bit disappointed after it ended so suddenly in laras wardrobe" - John (16-Aug-2021)
"This may be a Mansion level, but don't all run away just yet. The standard gameplay format still applies here i.e. search for the necessary keys and switches then the subsequent open door, and the duration is rather brief at only 20 minutes, but the layout, construction texturing and lighting is really spot on and quite striking at times (the treasure room, introduced through familiar music, was close to a masterstroke) and the audio files are really well used. There are actually three secrets to find, all quite sneakily hidden and it's really just the duration that lets things down here. Otherwise, I actually found myself liking this one, despite me not being the biggest fan of Mansion levels." - Ryan (28-May-2018)
"It's a house level, but it's someone else's house. Lara has apparently spent the night but has forgotten where she left her shoes. So the 20-minute raid is for a rather mundane reward, but it's pleasant enough while it lasts. You begin with the tranquil strains of the Moonlight Sonata, and from there it's mainly an exercise of pulling switches to find keys to open doors, etc. Yoav uncharacteristically missed all three secrets in preparing his walkthrough, but they're fairly cleverly hidden. Nostalgic memories of Scrooge McDuck were triggered when I entered that huge treasure room. There are no shooting tasks (as in breaking windows, etc.), and the only enemies you encounter are a few bats. A nice little time-filler." - Phil (13-Aug-2016)
"On a search for a short level I stumbled upon this seemingly classic home type level that still has received decent scores. If you ask me, it's rather overrated but at least this is not a 1-to-1 copy and seemingly built from scratch. There are a few nice lighting effects, a rather nice large treasure room and overall a rather good atmosphere with nicely chosen objects, textures and sounds. There are also a few texture mistakes, a rather silent background audio and a not too great architecture either so at times the game felt strangely amateurish, while there are glimpses of a professional builder to be seen in other parts. The gameplay is quite what you'd expect in a home level - being fairly restricted to the usual key hunt - and the first half is completely uninspired because of that, the second one is a bit better with a few pushables (and quite nice hints for those) and said treasure room but overall the enjoyment is quite limited in here. Found three decent secrets in 10 minutes." - manarch2 (19-May-2015)
"I found this to be a pretty enjoyable home level. The gameplay was the usual find the key in the first room to get to the other rooms ort of thing. The home felt really nice and had good lighting. The textures were very good and I liked the red carpet down the stairs as well. The room with a lot of gold really impressed me but it was pretty hard to know where to for me. The outfit was lara's robe from TR2's home sweet home. Very good level and not too long. Give it a go." - afzalmiah (05-Mar-2011)
"Every player has more or less seen the mansion in every incarnation possible, and thus probably one time too many already, but this one, though mostly not all that different from the rest of the flock, is constructed very well, and has been given a new look as well as some new areas to keep you occupied, though it probably will take approximately 15 minutes at most to reach the end here. But as said - the house has a new neat look, especially the trophy room looks nice, and you find a new passage that leads to a huge treasure depository that could rival Scrooge McDuck's money bin. While gameplay essentially is nothing more than a fetch quest for a number of keys, with the odd switch and lever thrown in - thus jointly with the rather short duration resulting in the low gameplay score - it's actually quite a pleasure to play through. Every new key pickup triggers a camera hint giving you a definite direction to go, and it's a wonderful feeling to never be lost, even if the mansion already is stripped to some bare essential areas required for the illusion to work. Definitely a nice home level for the looks and less explored ideas, but would love to see where the actual series goes on from here on as well!" - eTux (27-Apr-2008)
"This is a short level, twenty minutes tops with keys to find and the crowbar to help you. There are no enemies, except from some bats and even though the house is retextured and interesting, there's nothing to do really. I hope the next levels will have good gameplay and puzzles to solve. I found two secrets which were one silver and one crystal skull." - Kristina (15-Apr-2006)
"A very well built house level, lots to do, this house level isnt like any other house level i have ever encountered, i felt at home while playing this level, and when it ended, it left me wanting more. I got a question answered aswell in this level, i always thought that lara must have gotten a lot of money from here travel, so where does she keep it? now i know. I suggest you go and find out too." - ColeMoles (15-Mar-2006)
"This is another Lara's Home level, yes, but it's not as we know it. In fact, I personally loved this reinvented manor, the textures make it look much more like a 'modern' environment. Basically this is a find key, open door level and you really shouldn't be expecting more, although you do get to see a most impressive treasure room (and one which suits Lara much better, although I'm not sure she should keep all that gold inside her house, maybe a fat bank account would be safer?), though I'm not sure why Lara would keep the key to her wardrobe under such heavy security area of her home... maybe so Winston wouldn't mess up with her underwear? Anyway, good fun and one that will please fans of Lara's home levels. 20 minutes, 1 secret. 02/06" - Treeble (23-Feb-2006)
"We're in the mansion. Don't all groan at once. It was probably unfortunate that I've just recently finished playing Night of Shadows, which is just about the best mansion level I've ever played, and this level suffered in comparison. It's very much from the 'find a key to open a room to find another key to open another room to find a key to...' school of raiding. I will say the treasure room is impressive - Lara must have more gold than King Midas - and the level in general looks very good. This is part one of a series, so if the gameplay gets a bit more sophisticated in part two we could be in for a pretty good raid." - Jay (06-Feb-2006)
"Although Lara had made alterations in her home, we all are very bored of Lara's home levels. No enemies, no secrets. What's all this big treasure for? I always think Lara wasn't so materialist. All this percorred distance and works only to put her shoes? You'll be all the entire level pulling switches and placing keys to open doors, where are the puzzles? A house with rooms too much big, but well textured, lighted and decorated; ambience is very good. I liked very much the music of the title screen too." - Jose (09-Jan-2006)
"As this is the start of a larger series to come I will forgive it the fact it is set around the mansion, but a really nicely refurbished one with a brilliant underground treasure room, and that the gaming revolves around finding keys to open doors. This though doesn't make it really a level you will probably want to rush out to download, and I personally would have preferred to have played this with the other levels to follow straight away and not as a stand alone. I finished in 20 minutes with one skull secret found." - Sash (07-Jan-2006)
"What a lovely introduction level to a new series. And if the rest is anything like this, then we can look forward to some lovely looking levels at least. Lara looks brilliant, I love the outfit, and I loved looking at her opening the top drawer of those tall dressers. This is basically a run around the mansion to find keys and switches, as Lara is a hurry to get going after reading in the morning papers about a previously undiscovered civilization. So, apart from admiring this beautiful mansion make-over there is not a lot to do. Well, at least now we know just how much gold this lady is sitting on, and where it is hidden in the mansion. I found two skull secrets, nicely hidden too. Can't wait now to see what level two will be like." - CC (06-Jan-2006)
"It is a house level and it is even grander that we normally see. But the gameplay is looking for keys. Look specially in the dark corners, and you will even find the one secret I found. By the time Lara finds her clothes and shoes, the level end. Now hoping that the girl can have a real adventure starting from this point. 17-12-2005" - Gerty (23-Dec-2005)
"A nice little teaser. Yes, it is a Lara's Home level and I usually hate those, but this one looks different in a very positive sense and a lot of attention was given to details in texturing (like the hints for the pushables and the crowbar door and some nice objects are thrown in as well, not to forget the impressive treasure room. Once you get started, ie find the crowbar and the first key, things will flow well, thanks to camera guidance at literally every step and it is over after just more than 20 minutes and leaves you wanting to see more of this upcoming series. Found three skull secrets along the way." - MichaelP (21-Dec-2005)
"It's Lara's mansion,Jim;but not as we know it. This is a thoroughly delightful little exploration level, steeped in atmosphere and with a wonderful selection of appropriate music (including some little-heard Star Trek soundtracks). The re-design of the Mansion works well (including the breathtaking Treasure Room - made all the more effective through use of the TR1 soundtrack)and the textures and objects are placed well. However, the relative lack of Gameplay, together with a paucity of enemies, lack of secrets,a door-bug near the end if a lever isn't pulled, and rather short duration all mitigate against it and make this level little more than an enjoyable Demo. But as a prelude to a much larger series,it's very encouraging indeed." - Orbit Dream (20-Dec-2005)
"This level even though it was very short was very well thought out. In Lara's home there really is so much that you can do and i think burt_ie fitted it all in. The level lacked enemies but the puzzles were good. The textures i thought were marvellous and i liked the scratched texture to show the block was pullable. I will look forward to part 2 and hope you can do just as well maybe better. This is a level well worth playing WELL DONE." - Cory (20-Dec-2005)
"Here is the first part of a series of levels to be made by this builder. It takes place in Lara's home, and it is a very simple level. It is very short and doesn't have a lot to do. You basically go from room to room, claiming a key or pulling a lever, until you get the final key to access her wardrobe, where her raiding outfit is. There wasn't any challenges at all. No timed runs, or even having to work out where you need to use a key or what door opened when you pulled a lever. There is a camera shot of your next door everytime. The thing that kept me intrigued was the whole look of the mansion. You wouldn't even think it was her home, it looks compeltely different, it looks so nice! Pretty much everything is re-texured, and I myself haven't seen most of the textures before. It is the nicest looking lara's home I have ever seen, and I wouldn't mind living there lol. It looks like a house from the olden times with all the fancy wooden doors and walls. Every room looks different, everything is changed. In tr5 when Lara searchs a chest of drawers, you search the drawers of an old wardrobe instead! There is even a huge treasure room with piles or gold! As I loved the look of the mansion so much, I can't resist giving it top marks for textures. There are some nice new items as well, like the wardrobes, bookshelves, and the furniture. So that gets a high mark too. There are only a few custom tunes in the game, but it is a short level after all. The use of the camera was quite good too, but it did make it too easy as I said. So the only thing that lacks is the gameplay. If it was a bit more challenging, and had more to do id rate it higher. It is a big download for such a small level, but nevertheless, it's not a too bad level. Id definetly recommend it, just to see the look of the mansion. If burt can make the gameplay of his next set of levels anywhere near as good as the look of the house, then we will undoubtedly have a brilliant set of levels to look forward to!" - Aims (18-Dec-2005)
"In this one Lara has been given a new look that is quite sharp and doesn't show the flaws that many custom looks have. Lara is alone in her vast mansion, and doesn't know what she did with her keys and she needs to find her shoes! That's it to the gameplay. This mansion setting is nice, and I thought the treasure room was fun. It's a nice Xmas time level, as there are no enemies but some bats, but there isn't much to do. This probably should not have been released until parts 2+ were ready. The author has genuine talent, and I look forward to the next part." - Duncan (18-Dec-2005)
