Reviewer's comments
"When reaching the end after 16 minutes , you meet a crash at the desktop ; until there , it was a straightforward course with climbing (Lara's climbing animation is very fast), double rope swings , blade traps, pole rope swings (not all mandatory) , and shooting SAS mercenaries from afar which is never a very exciting task. The looks are not very good and the course itself feels quite unventful." - eRIC (27-Mar-2024)
"I can definitely see the resemblance to the Tomb Raider Legend level, both in terms of architecture and gameplay. Starting with the latter, it could have been more engaging. Lara will be swinging on ropes and poles, and climbing up lots of ladders as she dodges (relatively harmless) blade traps and shoots at some goons before the level abruptly ends. As for the former, it suffers a bit from that "big and empty" feeling but it is a good start. Apart from some nice color bulbs, the lighting is pretty flat (and too dark sometimes), and there are a large amount of stretched textures. The draw distance unfortunately gets in the way of what could have been a nice view of the temple front; building that area smaller would have helped combat this, or maybe using a horizon with a black bottom half. 13 minutes." - JesseG (17-May-2021)
"Having never played Legend or any of the offerings from then on (as I consider them all sub standard and made to cash in on the character rather than respond to the player)this was quite new to me and not half bad. Sure, game play was rather simplistic but the environs were good. I did not like the horizon fade outs which should no longer occur in the next gen engine and also Lara's jumping animation was odd. Took some getting used to. As if she was posing in mid flight as it where." - Torry (24-Aug-2018)
"I have played the original Ghana level from Tomb Raider Legend many times and the builder has caught several aspects fairly well. Lara gets to perform that high dive from the cliff, the waterfalls are still present, and the design isn't generally too lacklustre. I felt somewhat shortchanged with the gameplay, as the traps are incredibly easy to bypass, puzzles are nonexistent, and the level ended after 20 minutes. Lara's grabbing animation threw me off too. Not too bad a level though." - Ryan (12-Sep-2016)
"In retrospect(having played the actual TR Legend game myself), this attempt at a remake of the Ghana level is a commendable one, if only how it manages to accurately capture how most of the rooms were like in the actual game, despite being relatively blocky and basic in design(which is quite impressive in itself, for a debut release). The inclusion of a faster climbing animation for ladders is gratefully appreciated, fixed cameras at certain points are used effectively(but not to the point of annoyance), background tunes from the actual TR Legend game fit as well as you'd expect them to and the texturing is decent for the most part. However, not everything was done as well as other features. Gameplay is unfortunately pretty simple and unchallenging, involving you just going down one corridor after another, avoiding easy to get past traps and shooting down some henchmen along the way, in-between some basic platforming. I also think the lack of objects used make the level feel a lot more empty, than it needs to be. And the lighting itself could have used a bit more work, in order to help towards contributing to the atmosphere. Overall though, this is still a somewhat decent attempt at remaking a level from one of Crystal Dynamics's Tomb Raider games and I hope we get to see more from this builder at some point in the future, as there's a lot of potential on offer here. Just don't go and download this release with such high expectations and you might find yourself having a fun time. I certainly did for the 10-15 minutes it took me to complete it." - Ceamonks890 (15-Apr-2014)
"Some parts of this level are really nice but overall it's boring remake of TR Legend level as there is not much of interesting gameplay here. Textures are rather ok and visually it's good but further the level it becomes less detailed and more blocky. Blades are placed badly, watefalls look awful compared to nice looking rest. All in all author did rather good job but would but compared to original level it feels really weak. Still builder showed that he got potential - I liked the way he did many elements of rooms." - Casual Raider (12-Nov-2013)
"The author set off to remake a Legend level in the TR4 engine and I think it came out pretty well, when you consider the differences between the original games. There are a number of issues here though, such as the inability of the engine to render the waterfall area and a quite clumsy flyby camera a little later in the level. Gameplay is almost non existent though, as you just traverse the usually boxy environments. The texture work was quite good, but the room design was a little too ambitious perhaps. 20 minutes, 2 secrets. 04/09" - Treeble (04-Apr-2009)
"The starting area looked alright, and the swan dive from the top of the cliff was fun enough, but sadly the rest of the level was just pretty boring. There are knife blades that do so little damage that they might as well not be there, swing-poles that sometimes serve no purpose, a door that is opened simply by climbing to the top of a ladder, stretched texturing, poor lighting and a few other things that I could have done without. Sure, some of the jumps were nice, and I was particularly happy with the new 'speed cilmbing' animation, (despite it being very jerky) although there was not much else on offer here that I could recommend." - Spike (20-Jul-2007)
"The only thing I liked in this level that seemed like a demo, was the textures. Other than that, it's a darkish level with a few guys to shoot, some jumps and poles, ropes to swing from. I think the blades were way too many for no reason and were easy to bypass anyway. I found three secrets and I believe this level needs some more work. Maybe the builder should think about revising it." - Kristina (12-Apr-2007)
"This level anounced itself as an intereseting one, but it ended too fast. It uses the theme from the Tomb Raider Legend but with some noticeable flaws.Fist of all creating vast spaces using the Level Editor is quite trucky and the cascade from this area is not as it supposed to be. Then comes the problem with sounds wich at my computer keept interupting. In the pool, near a corner, is a water texture missing and Lara seams to be swiming in air.The area inside the temple is too dark. The fly-by had missing textures as well and the way Lara climbs ladders makes her look like a robot.I liked though the new moves from Legend that the author has incorporated. When the game ended it crushed to desktop. There aren't any puzzles to solve, just to take a walk inside a lost temple and do some jumping." - dya1403 (18-Jan-2007)
"I managed to nip through this level relatively quickly as it is rather short, but it has some really nice things to see and do. This is a aort of remake of the TRL Ghana level, and I think the author pulled it off very well as Lara makes her way through the temple to the top, tackling guards and traps, using horizontal poles and collecting secrets. We even get a blast of the TRL Ghana music while we Raid, and that was a really nice touch. There are a few issues however, the temple is virtually see-through and this spoilt what could have been a stunning view; even up close the walls disappear, and I'm not a builder, but I assume this can be corrected. Some areas such as the lake floor could have been more exciting, maybe a few plants and things to add feel to the place, and the textures were a bit tacky. The level also crashes to desktop at the end so I was left wondering for a while if I had actually completed it. But this is a great start, and I'd like to see a remake of this level with the corrections made if possible." - Moonpooka (12-Nov-2006)
"A short adventure which want to be a ¿remake? of one of the levels from TR Legend, easy to play. I've find some ilegal slopes and bad applied textures. Secrets are very easy to find. It's the first time I see Lara climbing walls more fast (good). In some places there are horizontal poles you don't need. At the end the game crashes. It's not a bad level, with some new features, but for me was very simply and without interesting puzzles to solve." - Jose (27-Sep-2006)
"This level suffers from being a remake of one of the most boring official Tomb Raider levels I ever played. (Where I come from, we say "aussen hui, innen pfui" = looking good but nothing apart from that). Admittedly, the first two minutes are nice. The builder has managed to create a simple TR4 engine copy of the Legend level, using the music and textures (which are nice, if a bit bland). The waterfall scene in the original level surely is beautiful and the remake captures that beauty in a simple, yet enchanting TR4 style. But then, the puzzles are not present, and it's all run through and shoot baddies, just as it is in the original. Gameplay is nonexistent. Not to blame the builder, again, it's due to the terrible original. Puzzles neither. I got mad at the two ropes, which ,as ever, present a formidable obstacle when you have to turn slightly and realign. I haven't played the original since April, but I thought there was more to the Ghana level than what I encountered here... As for enemies etc, what a bore. Atmosphere could have been good if the level had been spiced up but alas, it wasn't. So I give the sound, lighting, and textures six of ten, because that's all actually quite nice. Note to the builder: I know this is your first level, and you seem to have the capability of looking closely and creating a nice surrounding. I am very much looking forward to a level of yours where you don't use the "Legendary Flop". When I had finished, all I could think was: Is that it?" - Manymee (02-Sep-2006)
"For the demo is not too bad and few moments with nice surrounding. Area of Ghana is beautifull. Little boring with camera and angles. Water is very nice element of game and only maybe need some animal in the water. Just for relaxing Lara. Secrets i found and weapons for gun, but gun probably will be in full release of game. Good Work." - Ivan (27-Aug-2006)
"I must confess to never making it as far as Ghana in TRLegend, having lost the will to live shortly after arriving in Tokyo;but if this level is an accurate recreation, then I clearly didn't miss much. It does indeed successfully emulate the style of Gameplay of TRLegend,in that there isn't any;and the construction and texturing is absolutely fine, and occasionally rather effective.Far too many pole somersaults are included (Lara can usually jump the gaps under her own steam anyway),the extra tinkering (altered animations,speeded-up movements, bizarre Fly-by)shouldn't really have taken place, and it all ends at an arbitrary point. It's rather good to look at though, and you'll be through it in absolutely no time at all." - Orbit Dream (26-Aug-2006)
"Granted that this is the best level so far with the theme of Ghana and apparently it is a level from Legend but as I haven't played Legend and I probably never will it doesn't mean that much to me. I found it very dark and I had to use the binoculars a tad too much for my taste. Flares didn't help as the textures that are used in here are absorbing the light. I saw some missing water textures and I had no sound with the knives. The spikes coming out of the ceiling were a bit weird looking. I am not at all a fan of new movements Lara makes when using a swing pole or the fast movements while climbing. Fixed camera's in here served no purpose at all and only made me very queasy. Can't even remember quite a lot after playing as the only thing that stands out are the loads of swinging poles and half of them you didn't had to use. There must be a bug of some kind in here as swinging on a pole, Lara was up a ladder in no time and that didn't feel right at all, followed with a dizzy dingeling fly by that could use quite a bit of tweaking." - Gerty (24-Aug-2006)
"I wondered just how long it would be before elements of TR Legend turned up in custom levels. Here we have the music and some of the gorgeous waterfall backdrop from the official level and the author has had a really good stab at recreating one or two of Lara's new moves. It's a pretty good attempt actually and it's a debut level so that makes it even worthier in my book. It's very short and not at all challenging but it's a good beginning and let's hope to see more from this builder in the future." - Jay (21-Aug-2006)
"Well, this is almost a copy of original Ghana level in TR Legend despite author hasn't built every places you can find in Legend and some of the tasks are different. Of course they are different because it's impossible to build some of the things in Legend with Level Editor. There could be still harder and more interesting tasks in this level than simple jumps to complete and few traps to avoid. Cameras are quite nice if not counting the only fly by in this level which isn't very good. Visually this level is much better than it is technically. Areas look pretty good despite there are many stretched textures in this level. This isn't bad level at all but there's still one more thing I don't like very much. Author hasn't used his own imagination to build this level because it's a remake of the original Ghana level and I would have liked to see more author's own imagination. This is the reason why I usually dislike remake levels." - Samu (15-Aug-2006)
"Not sure what the fascination of Ghana in TR Legend is (have not played Legend yet), but this is already the third attempt at a remake and in my opinion so far this is the best. It uses some great objects (like the horizon), adds cool Lara animations (like the fast climb) and the choice of textures is excellent. On the downside it shows that this is a debut level, as the rooms are rather square, the textures often applied stretched or squashed and looking much like wallpaper and one flyby is really badly desgined. The blade traps seem rather overused but maybe that is the same in the original (?). Enemies are only a few baddies. Found three secrets and it lasted about 20 minutes for me." - MichaelP (14-Aug-2006)
"I know it says it's a remake(and it's very evident at that) and I do feel I should be encouraging seeing as how creating a remake of an original TR level is a very bold move(and remakes very seldom, if ever, turn out to be as good as the "real thing"). Zolee is a first-time builder and there were typical beginner's mistakes to be found here(missing horizon mostly and at one point you could actually see through the entire complex even though Lara was standing in the middle of it in an enclosed room). Lighting is a bit flat and unfortunately the same goes for the atmosphere. The sound is very good though, taken from TR:Legend, but at times it cut off so suddenly that the whole thing felt a bit unnatural. The camera angles were good, with a variation between fixed cameras and the regular ones, but never so much that it became stressful. The re-production of the main hall of the temple with the four guards was skillfully made, but it did seem a bit too simplistic. I loved the ropeswinging part though and the horizontal bars were a nice touch, although some of them appearantly seemed to have no function at all and at one of them Lara even got stuck in her Supermanistic jump pose(like a sort of frozen DOZY movement). The mentioned jump-movement alone is worth seeing though, as well as the speedy ladder-climbing. The enemies were a bit too few and easy to take down and there was a massive overuse of slashing blades(for most parts they were easy to get by, but some were also placed quite cleverly). I found one secret, but would also have loved to see some more pickups. The ending was also quite unsatisfying, as it crashed abruptly to the desktop right when Lara was about to enter what would be the cave with the wheel and statue mechanism in the original game. As said before I have to credit the builder for the ambitions and boldness and I must say I've seen a lot worse, both remakes and new levels. It could be a promising start, but unfortunately it never turns out to be more than a lukewarm copy. If you've played the original Ghana level, you can play this one too with no trouble whatsoever. There are no puzzles and no actual thinking is required, this is more of a straight, perfectly logical run that lasts about 20 minutes or so. Easy and absolutely suitable for beginners, more skilled raiders might miss more of a challenge though." - Selene (13-Aug-2006)
