Reviewer's comments
"Another day, another catacomb level I'd left behind. This is a rather standard adventure so while the setting is still not exactly growing on me, I enjoyed my time here thanks to the gameplay in itself. I could do without the underwater maze, but fortunately it's rather short (when following Harry's walkthrough), and I like how backtracking is kept to a minimum, you run to side areas for some puzzle items or levers but find yourself back where you were shortly, so good pacing there. Towards the end there's an inventive jump switch concealed halfway down a slope to prevent you from being crushed to death, and there was one hallway with an assortment of different traps which only highlighted how the hitbox of the spikes is messed up in the TR4 engine, but otherwise it's all good fun. The simple lighting was pretty effective and I even thought some of the locations were visually gorgeous — and, again, catacomb.wad. Madness, huh? 35 minutes, 3 secrets. 01/22" - Treeble (13-Feb-2022)
"Here's another enjoyable, traditional Catacombs level from the early years. It's a fun 40 minute journey through a classic environment to locate the "last" trident of the title. You'll need to be alert to outwit deviously placed spiked balls, fire traps and dart traps as well as skeletons and harpies that are baying for your blood. A pleasant trip down memory lane." - Ryan (17-May-2017)
"This is a surprisingly entertaining one-hour romp through an Egyptian environment. The highlights involve boulders and spike balls. In one segment you have to negotiate a boulder gauntlet that's not as easy as it looks at first. When you trigger them all safely and throw a switch, they all drop into a trench so you can shimmy back to the entrance. Near the end is a difficult slide and jump to reach a jumpswitch that nullifies another boulder that would otherwise squash you after you've reached the bottom of the ramp. The burner room, also near the end, was too much for me. I was able to jump safely to the middle of the room, but I wasn't able to shimmy past the burners to the other side without being set aflame, so I played the last few minutes engulfed in flames (courtesy of god mode). Harry Laudie has provided a walkthrough in which he noted the considerable difficulty he had with a torch toss. Go figure, I did it successfully on the first try, but maybe that's only because Harry told me where to stand. Anyway, this is a well-crafted level that will give most players a good workout." - Phil (26-Mar-2015)
"It seems to me that this Catacomb level , with the usual suspects but with also some different enemies (harpies , ninjas, fire wraiths) has exactly the good duration, not too short , not too long, and it is quite entertaining the time it lasted. There is also a good balance between the puzzles , the enemies and some action, nothing too difficult , but some places require a bit of observation. The setting is solidly made although not very impressive and with some mistakes (invisible blocks in front of closed doors). The highlight of this author's (good) first level was a good torch puzzle." - eRIC (18-Oct-2007)
"Most of the level has spike, fire and boulder traps. Also it has a nasty bug in the area where you have to raise a block. There is a gate nearby but if you don't open the next ones like I did because I forgot a lever, then you are trapped and can't proceed. Other than that there is an underwater maze, a torch puzzle and skeletons to get rid of. The setting is standard catacomb like with a fairly good room design. I found three secrets in the thirty minutes it lasted." - Kristina (12-Apr-2007)
"This is one of those generally linear levels that goes from moment to moment. You know the kind I mean: largish room with platforms, closed doors,a few flames perhaps, and seemingly inaccesible switches;work out where to go and what to do in order to open the exit door which leads through into the next largish area which contins more platforms, switches etc, etc. Each of these areas are perfectly entertaining but it does get a little repetetive over time, particularly the underwater maze. However, every so often the builder includes a really nifty gauntlet which requires dexterity and occasional contemplation. I defy anyone to accomplish the final challenge without at least a dozen attempts. Elsewhere it's all pretty standard.Quite adequately constructed, but nothing too inspired. It's all very 'Egypt traditional' in appearance, but for 50 minutes you'll definately be entertained." - Orbit Dream (26-Jan-2007)
"This level was a nice surprise and quite fun. I am not a fan of the non-English script, but I stayed positive and thought, "hey, I can learn how to say 'load game' in German!" The level started off nice and bright with a very obvious secret and I thought to myself, "well, this one's going to be easy." Um, not so much. Usually when I see a skeleton in a level before I have a way to destroy them, I get all fussy and sometimes bail out before giving it a chance. Thankfully, I found the armbrust with explosivammo soon after so I was settling down and ready to learn more German, uh, I mean play the level. Nothing here was too difficult, but a few traps needed careful examination and skillful maneuvering. I love the Legend Lara and she fits nicely here. Not too many enemies impede Lara's way, but thankfully, there is just enough ammo so you never feel cornered. My biggest complaint was a torturous underwater maze near the end. Thankfully, it wasn't too long and winding, but when you inevitably swim yourself into a dead end, you can't go back to the only air hole without taking damage from spikes, not that I would even attempt that. Beings that was the only area that ruffled my feathers, I can't complain too much. This was a fine first level from this author and I really enjoyed working my way through it. I hope to see more from this new builder!" - Shandroid (19-Nov-2006)
"Well, what a pleasant surprise this was! Don't ever think "oh no, not another catacomb level", because this is definitely not just another run around in creepy underground places. The textures are the usual catacomb varieties, but it all looked very nice with well decorated rooms. I had no problems with lighting or massively dark areas, and flares are well supplied if you do need them. What I really liked about this level was the built up from a simple start to more complex game play. Lara begins outside the catacombs, and there are a couple of ninjas to greet her. Once inside, she'll meet the first of many skeletons, but will find the crossbow soon enough to take care of that problem. More ninjas (of the blue and red variety) arrive later, plus those ever demanding skeletons and crocodiles, and a wraith will show up later in the game. Game play was of a high standard and I never found myself getting bored. Lara first searches for the crow bar and a star. There is a nice little object puzzle, some fabulous jumping about to do, and spike traps are nicely placed. Later on the torch will be used, and I liked the puzzle to get the torch to where it needed to be. There is a small water maze which dropped the appeal a bit, but this is only a personal gripe seen as I hate mazes at the best of times, and loath water mazes even more, but saying that, the maze is small so all was forgiven. Eventually Lara finds the Trident and here the level ends. All in all, this is a fabulous level which gave me over an hours worth of game play, and I really hope we see some more of this builders work as obviously a lot of thought went into this little gem of a level." - Moonpooka (12-Nov-2006)
"Not too bad and not too long for playing. Traps are okay and can be better, sometime with few reloading finished parts of level. Sounds are correct and in almost every good action scene available. From one small room to other big room, and from one small room to one big room, but all are diferent what is most important and made some tension to continue to play. In next levels of ZIP will be more and more better and better levels, because last trident level is good enough to continue to build with more creativity and prosperity." - Ivan (11-Nov-2006)
"This is a very well executed catacomb style level that I played a while ago but I forgot to make a review. There is nothing wrong with playing it for a second time so while it was drizzling outside, I sat cosy behind my computer. It is a little gem so I would recommend it to give it a try. There are some nice traps in here, so do save at certain points. Had quite a problem with throwing that Torch through that small crawlspace and I probably was very lucky to get the floor lever to work in the end despite the spiked ball as I never got to that jump lever, but the idea was a good one. Hope we see more from Clemens as I had a great time" - Gerty (23-Oct-2006)
"Another catacomb level with a lot of switches to pull and a lot of traps. Gameplay was good for me although there are some tricky tasks there are good puzzles too. I found few ammo, flares and MPs but enough to finish the level without problems. The same old catacomb textures but well applied. A very playable level, you'll enjoy it." - Jose (09-Oct-2006)
"A basic but enjoyable catacomb style level of 45 minutes that starts and ends with a small outside area. Not sure whether I really liked the Legend outfit here. Gameplay is fast paced, you encounter the usual enemies (skeletons, crocs, mummies) and somehow the ninjas seemed out of place. Textures and cameras are solid and lighting almost too bright. There is a nice little push puzzle and a 'gauntlet room' that was fun. You even get to use a torch briefly and the level ends just after you reach the trident. Found 2 of the 3 secrets and wonder if the third has to do with the jump switch af the last slide." - MichaelP (30-Sep-2006)
"If you're a catacomb fan, I can certainly recommend this one. It's got all the ingredients, nicely blended into a fun raid. It's a bit of a shooter so you'll find the demands on your health somewhat challenging, but otherwise it's reasonably straightforward (although reaching a jump switch from a series of slides took some perseverance), and, yes, it does end when you find the trident. Yet again, a very creditable debut level (and I'm beginning to feel like an echo, but we really have had some good first time builds lately). Do try it." - Jay (25-Sep-2006)
"This level has been out for over two weeks, but it hasn't been reviewed yet. I really don't understand why. I can see why people don't feel like playing the difficult Japanese levels or don't want to review the really horrible levels, but this one is a pretty good first effort, and is actually better than I thought it would be, judging from the lack of reviews. Granted, it's a fairly standard thirty-minute level, but it's still worth playing. The gameplay is quite varied, and the texturing is decent, with no stretched textures or anything. It's never too challenging and is pretty linear, so you don't need to worry about getting stuck (though there was one fire trap I had problems with). Overall, it's a good level by a new author, and there's no reason why you shouldn't play it." - Magnus (16-Sep-2006)
