Reviewer's comments
"Yet another "remake" of the Caves, if it can be called that, since this doesn't have anything new as to be considered as a remake! It's all just the exact same layout as the original level, except there's no bear. But the gameplay remains the same. I'm waiting for something that actually includes some novelties." - alan (06-Sep-2020)
"We're back in Core's Mayincatec land; textures have been restored to their proper grey; the jackals are wolves again, and the extras are gone; the collapsible tiles are there, but the bear's still nowhere to be seen. Some sprites have been replaced by objects; there are texture sounds, but they're off (gravel sounds on solid stone floors; solid stone floor sounds on mud). It looks as though even the texturing errors of the original have been faithfully reproduced. As various reviewers have observed, this is about as close to the original as it could have got under the circumstances; so much so that it disappears in the black hole created by its own pointlessness." - Mulf (26-Oct-2019)
"A faithful remake of the original level with every asset present and accounted for here. The gameplay follows the same format and visuals are true to the original." - Ryan (26-Dec-2016)
"This is certainly a faithful and well made copy of the original TR1 level, but as we've seen it all before so many times it becomes rather hard to enthuse. I dare say when it was first released the mere fact of being able to see TR1 textures in a TR4 medium would have seemed quite a novelty. Regrettably, this no longer holds true." - Jay (06-Sep-2016)
"The same old TR1 level. No new rooms, no new puzzles, no new features. Evenmore, there are less enemies, very few cameras, no flybys and no musics to create atmosphere. I didn't found an extra weapon to shoot the wolves and the bats. Correct design and texturization, but nothing special for this remake with very empty rooms." - Jose (09-Feb-2016)
"Oh look, another TR1 Caves level remake. And from the same builder no less! Unlike the builder's previously released 'Textured' version of this level however, this version has most of the original level assets restored(although the familiar TR1 tunes and the bear enemy are still missing.) Much like I mentioned in my review for the 'Textured version', if you already own TR1 in your game collection, there is absolutely no point in playing this release, as it's the exact same level as the original, warts and all." - Ceamonks890 (12-Apr-2014)
"Hey, another remake of a level we've visited thousands of times before! One of the most-remade levels ever! I was so exited to play this level I could not wait for it! Oh - everything looks just as in the original! Ok, irony over now. I think I can play this level even if I were blind. Everything looks just as the original, and that can be the only positive point, as the builder didn't even care of better lighting than the mostly flat original. 6 minutes." - manarch2 (27-Jun-2011)
"This is the fourth remake I've played in as many days, and once again I find myself asking the question "If you're going to go to all the effort of crafting an emulation, why slavishly follow the original when you could throw in a bit of personal creativity here and there?" This remake is a case in point:in appearance,it's identical to the original in all respects excepting the absence of the Bear;and this includes the duplicate Gameplay. No surprises anywhere along the line, and that's a shame." - Orbit Dream (14-Jun-2011)
"After having just finished a hard and long level, I felt the need for something quick and easy to relax and this level is just what I needed. A quick trip down memory lane as you run down the caves just like in the first Tomb Raider. Everything looks, feels and sounds very familiar - except the bear is missing. I got stuck in the texture behind the door once - just a minor bug and easy to avoid. It is a short and simple level that manages to capture the spirit of the original perfectly. No hard-core TR fan should miss this one! (9 min, 3 secrets)" - Blue43 (15-Mar-2011)
"This is basically a remake of the first level of the original game so there isn't much of originality here however, it was just like playing to real thing only with better graphics. A lot of effort went into recreating this level and I enjoyed playing it." - Necro (20-Nov-2007)
"I'm honestly not quite sure about how to review this level. It is a carbon-copy of TR1's first level(as is the point of converting it), not one texture is displaced and everything is as it was in the original(minus the bear, which I stood around waiting for quite some time). The enemies, wolves and bats, are there in the exact same locations as you remember, the three secrets are the exact same and the bridge room, the collapsible tiles and the timed run too(although to me this seemed a bit tighter than it was in TR1). In other words, it's like playing good old TR1 again, apart from the fact that Lara is naturally looking like she did according to the TR4 engine. Short, sweet and easy as always, a remake true to the origin which is well worth playing." - Selene (21-Feb-2006)
"What can I say? This is close to perfect when it comes to a remake. All textures and secrets are there, 95% of the objects are in the correct place. Even the collapsing floor near the end (without sound though) I will rate this levels as a remake of tr1 and not in comparison with a tr4 level. Hence my high ratings. The author deserves it for this near perfect remake! I wish he will make my favorite level 'Atlantis' soon :) 2005-05-28" - QRS (31-May-2005)
"Version 8.5 brings us much improvement over the other version. Textures look better, the wolves look better, lighting is about par and Lara looks great. I like this version better cause it stays more true to the original and enemies are not randomly placed this time around. Nice job again, just a bit on the boring side because there's nothing new. If I had to give this level a grade, I would give it a C-, a low pass mark." - The Aussie Adventurer (16-May-2005)
"It's the exact same thing as the previous version only this time the caves are bluish and no bridges. Again we have two secrets and bats to kill and it took me three minutes this time." - Kristina (23-Aug-2003)
"(v8.5) I have played all the previous versions from this conversion, and indeed this is the best remake up to date. The bear wasn't available yet when this level was released, and probably that's the unique thing you really do miss. It will be put in version 9, which will be the final one. Even the lighting is very identical to TR1 - you feel like there isn't any lighting, because the whole level is flat (as opposite to v6.0 Textured), and TR1 was just like this! I can assure that because I played recently the whole TR1, and it's still the best TR game yet! Artimus lost all his work and he started from scratch AGAIN everything, since version 7, and it's getting each time better! Remaking a level does take a lot of time and effort - and Artimus is very devoted to get through all this hassle!" - Treeble (21-Dec-2002)
"For the PC players it is a shame that it is very hard to get TR 1 running, as for us Mac players we are a bit more lucky. This does indeed brings back memories and I have to admit that some of the textures I liked better than in the original. For the rest nothing new. Only complain I would have that although there is a txt file it still is a bit confusing if you don't understand anything about where to put what. It was for me and I played more than 300 levels at this time. Glad I got it right, as this is my third attempt. 16-09-2002" - Gerty (23-Sep-2002)
"This is a very interesting, precise and well built version of the first level of the first TR game. Textures, rooms, atmosphere and objects are the same as in the original. It's all here, except for the bear. This is even so a very good work, and a good example of that we can do with good use of all the tools of the Level Editor (I mean of course official and unofficial tools). But I'm not sure how to rate this. This level isn't a personal and original creation. The most weird thing for me is that KingSpyder has made 8 versions of this? Just for nostalgic people (not a pejoratif property in fact) and those who have never seen the first emergence of that, it will become a great, great classic!" - Chris LP (22-Aug-2002)
"Another remake of the legendary Caves and you have to ask yourself if you want to play both versions by the author in a row so that you can compare them, or do you let 4 months go past so that you have forgotten all about the version you played first and it might seem like a new level to you. I opted for the latter and still I managed to make it through this in 7 minutes. And that's with the secret and pausing on the bridge to shoot the dogs. I recall that there were more medipacks the last time around. What else is there? Well, the all too familiar setting, quite believably done, the one timed gate, the collapsible tile. Not much else, really." - Dimpfelmoser (15-Aug-2002)
"Not as authentically textured as The Caves (Textured Version) but it makes up for the difference with some more dogs that at the start will take you by complete surprise. Apart from that there is nothing new here, except of course Lara looks a hell of a lot better than she did in the Core/Eidos version." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"This level offers what it says: a replica of the TR1 Caves level. So it is basically a reminiscence of the old days and probably as close as it gets to a copy of the original. Very impressive work, but from a gameplay perspective nothing new, of course. I found 3 secrets on my 15 minutes trip, loved the collapsing floors and the timed door at the end. There is one missing texture I saw and a door placed the wrong way round." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"Except for the fact we have all played this level a dozen times in the original game, it was a superb remake. I would have scored it higher but as a true remake, there was nothing new in the gameplay. Textures were marvelous and if you want to re-live the glory days in fresh bright textures, give this a go." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"I have to admit it's hard to review this level. It brings back so many great memories from my favorite Tomb Raider game. The creator of this level, KingSpyder, did a brilliant job of recreating the first level of Tomb Raider, almost exact in every way. The only differences, no bears or breakaway tiles, were not his fault though - just not available. It was a little more trouble to install, but it was worth it. No new puzzles or anything here, but it looks almost better than even the original - and this time you can crawl through that first set of wall darts! KingSpyder - if you read this, please do the rest of the levels!" - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"The caves was one of the levels which I completed very quick, it took me about 13 min =). The enemies are exactly the same, the white wolfs who jump on me, definitely not for a bone of snack. They want Lara herself, no way... Modeling and texturing done great. Keep on converting !" - Yasin (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a exact replication of the first level of the Original TR1-Game. Well -almost. There are some strange doors or levers, which are not those of the Original! The wolves are replaced by dogs (TR4-Style). Also the bear is replaced by some dogs. The breakable floor is missing. In summary I wish that the author would continue his good work and adds all the things that are strange or missing! The 2nd Level 'City of Vilcabamba' proves, that it is possible." - LaraFan (21-Jun-2002)
"I love TR1, it's still my favourite official TR game, so I had to try this remake. And I'm so glad I did. My first impression was one of amazement - the attention to detail is stunning. Almost everything is exactly the same as it is in the original. There's one notable exception of course: Lara looks infinitely better. Anyone who has already played TR1 will obviously not find anything new here in terms of gameplay and/or puzzles, hence the low rating there. The same applies to the rating I have given for enemies and secrets. But that doesn't mean that this level isn't superb - and of course it's fantastic to be able to crawl and climb around corners this time! KingSpyder has done a terrific job, and I can't wait for the rest of the levels to be completed." - Bex (21-Jun-2002)
