Reviewer's comments
"This was one of those CITY levels with surplus paper-thin walls and spacious rooms almost devoid of anything special. Some indoor areas where lit as bright as day, and some outside rooms were pitch-black. Also, the loopholes inside this level could cause serious gameplay issues for the player, such as getting trapped in the small pool below the first motorbike platform (yellow one), as there were no ledges for Lara to be able to climb out. Not recommended. Thanks!" - Mehrbod (29-Mar-2022)
"The long, 90 second opening flyby (I counted) only serves to show all of the stretched, dodgy texturing, thin walls and a rather mess city environment altogether. The gameplay is nothing exciting, revolving around throwing a lot of levers, shooting a lot of guards and going through some quite hefty backtracking. I also had a bit of trouble taking out the sentry gun using the LaserSight, so I had to backflip off a slope and take it out using my pistols. A couple of brief bike rides slightly alleviate the monotony, but overall this level didn't really do anything for me." - Ryan (30-Oct-2018)
"This city level has some repetitive textures, others missing and this city simply doesn't look good. It starts with a long and slow fly-by, showing all the places you have to walk through. I found the uzis, crossbow, grenade launcher and revolver to kill the guards and dogs. I liked the explosion of the helicopter and how the room turned into a bright yellow color, though it took me by surprise. In the place with the blue doors I had to use a crowbar, so I looked for it but I didn't find it. Then I read the walkthrough and it was hidden somewhere near the beginning. I couldn't go back there so I had to dozy to get the crowbar and finish the level." - alan (09-Nov-2017)
"Level has many big and empty rooms. I found shotgun, uzis and grenade laucher so seacrets are easy to find. Your mainstyle to progress level is killing SAS-groups and put switches on. Beginners level." - vienna (15-Sep-2016)
"This was the builder's debut level and I'm afraid all the loooooooong opening flyby managed to achieve was to highlight that fact, showing up all the wafer thin walls and rushed construction. It's a shame really, as the city wad can be so atmospheric in competent hands. Gameplay is pretty routine also, not much going on apart from killing soldiers and throwing switches, although there is of course some compensation in the form of motorbike riding and you do get to take out a sentry gun, which never fails to please. For City level fans, I have to say there are far better options out there." - Jay (08-Jun-2015)
"When I saw the initial flyby I thought: "mamma mía!!!", but even so I decided to play it anyway. I found what I supposed: simple architecture with huge and empty rooms, bad texturization, black rooms, paper walls, no cameras when you pull a lever (well, perhaps a flyby near the end), few musics, SAS and dogs as enemies and a very poor gameplay consisting only about pull floor levers to open doors. Well, there are also some rides with the motorbike, a swing with a rope near the end and some climbing and monkeyswing but nothing entertaining. Not recommended." - Jose (07-May-2015)
"A very entertained level which I enjoyed although is quite easy, enemies are well placed. The thing I HATED is the initial fly-by, it last too long I almost fell asleep. All in all a nicely done which I think it could have been better" - Gonxii (08-Oct-2013)
"The Flyby's are badly done, the town looks unrealistic, one sees constantly stretched textures and the black horizon is also not so nice. Moreover has disturbed me the Fixcam at the long monkey swing. The ways were too long and all rooms were bald and dull. A few rooms looked quite good and the exploding helicopter was a nice effect. But all together it was badly dull. Only the motorcycle distances felt well more or less, but it was this already." - Scottie (17-Feb-2010)
"Although this level was quite fun, it was a little bland. The scenery looked as if it was rushed with only 6 or 7 textures used throughout. I also noticed a few design flaws in the guise of wafer-thin walls and platformss and even some untextured tiles. That said, there was enough to keep me busy and there were a few gameplay ideas that i hadn't come across before so all in all, this was an entertaining romp but could have been a lot better if more effort was spent on the implementation of the design." - Necro (27-Apr-2008)
"Let me be honest, it's a fun level to play. But it isn't very well designed. The gameplay was quite straightforward. There were a lot of levers to pull, but every time I had no idea what to do. The enemies were from CITY-wad, so nothing original. I didn't understand where that sentury-gun appeard from, out of the blue ball? But never mind that. There was 1 secret I found, it wasn't too difficult. The atmosphere was the standard one. There were not many sounds to hear. I haven't seen many cameras as well. The lighting was strange: at one place it's dark, but 1 meter further it is absolutely light. The textures were almost all the same. It was a bit boring. But still, if you like the shoot 'em ups, it is a really nice level to play." - Danja (29-May-2007)
"I have to say I do like these city levels especially if there is a motorbike involved. Therefore I was overjoyed when I came across one very early. Then I was disappointed to have to leave it. Imagine my delight when I found another! Overall I enjoyed this level although it was fairly straight forward nothing challenging for experienced raiders. The textures were nothing new but I did like to see the helicopter. And as I said before I did enjoy running over the soldiers and the lions (yes lions!)." - Jez (09-May-2004)
"Watching the long opening flyby did not inspire me to play. It looked pretty dull to be honest and it's really the only useful camera hint you get anyway. A city level yes but quite simply put together. I thought ok it's an old level so give it a chance. And it's not that bad after all. There are two satisfying bike rides around the city and underground in a kind of sewer finding lots of floor levers and the crowbar. I liked the way you blow up the helicopter here and the last minute lasersight and the second helicopter that explodes all it's own just to save you the bother. There were a lot of big problems with textures enemies appearing out of nowhere a machine gun that appears under a blue ball to shoot the underpart of a 'ship'(?) waving in the water like hair and did anyone else see that contorted dog stuck to the ceiling? It's not bad at all but it's not great either." - CC (17-Sep-2003)
"I just don't enjoy levels featuring a city which Lara has to draw guns every minute. As you can imagine the SAS guards sentry guns are enough in this level. Again as you might have guessed there are switches to open doors bikes to ride and again shoot something or someone and so on. The textures are really not a good sight to look at being stretched and all. It was boring for me maybe other players that like this kind of levels will have more fun than I did." - Kristina (04-Jul-2003)
"Lets get one thing straight before we go any further: this city is about as convincing as James Coburn's Australian accent in 'The Great Escape'. The pathway you need to navigate on 2 motorbikes is enormously contrived and the texturing is awkward to say the least. In fact I was well into the level before I even realised that I needed to go back and get the bike down off a tall building; a situation only remedied by loading a much earlier savegame which rather spoilt it for me. There were a few enjoyable acrobatic maneuvres to perform and a decent fly-by at the start but I was never very involved with this journey and indeed when the end trigger came into play I was still not certain that I had done everything the designer intended me to do." - Orbit Dream (21-Jun-2003)
"A Newcity-Wad Level with its known textures. I must say that it often shows a lazy work - stretched textures paperthin walls colour without any idea and even you see a cloudy night sky later find a lens flare-effect. You have to search the City - meet Soldiers and Dogs. Something is done by monkey swing. Not so much Sound and Camera - even if you have a flyby at beginning which really hurt my eyes seeing so many errors. Some very strange things - a sentrygun coming out of a hanging ball walls that move like water....Later see a wall without textures - too bad that the builder means not to like his own work.... ca. 40 minutes- if you do not play it you have not lost anything." - Miguel (31-Mar-2003)
"As you can see I played this more than a year later than it was released. Not a big fan of city levels and driving vehicles myself so I kept putting it off. It starts with a rather long flyby that will tell you where to go. The gameplay is running from switch to switch opening doors and of course there will be SAS men trying to stop you. Also some dogs and sentry-guns and a trap here and there. Also the bike rides yes there are two was more an ordeal for me than a pleasant ride. Liked to have more camera work to see what you just opened as I just ran around a lot figuring out what to do next. 15-10-2002" - Gerty (19-Oct-2002)
"Lara must find her way through and out of a seemingly abandoned city. I think the highlights of this level are the bits with motorcycles and as I'm not a big cycle fan that's not saying much. Am trying to keep in mind this is an older custom level and many greats have come after. Gameplay was not bad if you are a fan of shoot-em-ups. Many many streets halls and underground areas to explore and do things in. The usual SAS guards you come to expect and a few dogs. After a huge flyby in the beginning the author does not give us much help in that manner again consequently most of the time you are running blindly. I did encounter a swimming part where I swam straight through a closed gate and also through some walls to flip a switch that I was to otherwise access. I spent 40 minutes found 1 secret and used 1 medpack." - Momster (13-Sep-2002)
"As you can ascertain by the name this level is set in an abandoned city well it isn't too abandoned there is quite a bit of gun play in the second half of the level which really fit the eerie feel of the place well there are also a load of levers to pull which is primarily the extent of the puzzles. With a 90 second initial fly by a couple of exploding helicopters 2 separate motorbikes and again lots of levers to pull my only real trouble with it was that after pulling those levers you never get to see what is triggered apart from once but besides that this was quite an adventurous 40 minute level." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Not being so much a fan of City levels I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It starts with a neat 1.5 minute fly-by which takes you through the path you will follow later but already there it also shows you some of the stretched textures and paper-thin walls and actually goes through walls which does not look too professional. But then when you enter the gameplay the atmosphere of the city really gets you and there is smart use made of two motorbikes throughout the level (took me a while to figure out how to go back down with the first bike without crashing). A few more cameras would have been helpful with the many levers to switch. The helicopter puzzle is standard but solidly built and I like the fixed camera with the monkey swing and the huge explosion effect of the second helicopter. Towards the end of this good half an hour of net gaming time there is an automatic gun appearing out of nowhere which does not seem to work but at least it makes you jump." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"Another fine level. I do so love the shoot 'em ups. One tip: Explore carefully. I missed an item early that had me tearing my hair out because I needed it later." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"Well this level is great but its initial fly-by gives you a will to NOT play it. Also I could not finish it because I could not reach a lever which is blocked by a SAS dead soldier :(" - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"This level starts out with a minute long flyby that in my opinion only serves to show off the faults of the level - mainly the wafer thin walls and the fact that all the areas look almost identical and they all look fake. The plot here is nearly identical to almost every other city level I've played and has you basically running from switch to switch with a few soldiers dogs machine guns doors fire traps and monkey swings in between. The use of the motorcycles was fairly interesting along with a few good camera angles and the helicopter explosion but I think this level will appeal more to the city wad lovers - I just couldn't work up very much excitement over it." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"When I was at the accademy we had to watch a lot of independent/underground films from the 60s and boy there was some real dross to sit through but you learn a lot cause most of the time you can see what the filmmakers tried to do and where they failed (i.e. so you know how not to do it) whereas with a real master like Hitchcock Wilder or Kubrik their methods are so subtle the storytelling is so professional you don't even recognise the genius as you are so engrossed in the plot. So this level is kinda interesting for all level builders cause it illustrated rather nicely what one should avoid. The many levers (half of the time you don't even know what they do cause you haven't passed the door yet) the long uneventful runs the texturing that is rather monotonous and two-dimensional. You find weapons that you don't really need you can get stuck when you leave the bike too early the pointless fly bys the artificial atmosphere and the construction of this city that seems contrived and where every yard looks exactly the same. However there were two things I liked the backslide with the bike and the one location of the crossbow." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
