Reviewer's comments
"What a great setting and enjoyable environment to explore in! It really does feel like evening time set in exotic type of jungle by the coast with both TR3 jungle and South Pacific textures. I particularly liked seeing and exploring the part submerged aircraft in the water before we head further inland searching for more items and ways to progress into more underground, cave or lagoon areas. It’s here where we are slowly introduced to platforming and boulder traps with lava and fire making the ledge hoping a more dangerous task. After we emerge it’s some lovely looking large outside areas to explore, I say explore but these areas are a bit of waste as you just run through them to find an item and then run back again where you came from to place it, it would of made sense to have put some secrets in these places at least! The level then continues to swap between caves and lovely looking outdoor areas again before we actually get to climb some trees and explore the treetops and tree houses for more items etc which was fun. Boulders seem to remain the main trap of choice here in this level with some crocodiles and bats to contend with for the enemies section. Overall a bit more variety in gameplay would of been appreciated such as some puzzles, timed runs or different types of traps and I feel more enemies were needed as well but the environment and setting you do get to play in was so appealing that it always was a joy to explore around." - John (24-Aug-2023)
"This must have been a pretty good level back when it was released, and even in modern standards it is a solid one. The map design and jungle atmosphere keeps getting better and better as you progress, and the temple/hut sections here and there among the trees blend in well. The traps and boulders come in fitting times so they had a good balance. A couple of issues were present, the most problematic being unmarked death tiles, and at the last area you could fall through a wooden tile that should be solid. These are few and between so they don't harm the level seriously. Another minor thing was a tile in the temple section triggering the door of the crashed plane, two areas that shouldn't have a connection. I also experienced a bug which I could not repeat, the gate did not open when I picked up the first golden star which caused me to wander around half an hour. Anyway, all things considered it is an enjoyable and also pleasing level." - Nomad (09-Sep-2021)
"A good level with lots of exploration in a jungle environment, with some puzzle pieces to look for, traps to avoid and jumping on trees to do. As some have already mentioned, there are parts in the level that can be skipped or rooms that you can get through in an easier way than the author intended. Most boulders can be avoided easily by stepping on their triggers and then stepping aside. You can skip the lava room by jumping over a rock and there's no need to open the door. There were pits where you couldn't even get out of, I found very few enemies and pick ups. But I guess what stands out here the most is the good atmosphere and construction of this jungle... Also those few clothes that Lara is wearing in this adventure, lol." - alan (26-Jan-2020)
"This is a very eye-pleasing level, with plunging waterfalls, treetops and calm water pools. Luckily it wasn't too dark, so I could appreciate it more. Gameplay mainly involves exploration, jumping and finding necessary pickups, with very little puzzles, but I enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere all the same. This has stood the test of time better than most." - Ryan (26-Aug-2016)
"This is a most pleasant old level, with its pretty jungle settings and lovely waterfalls. Plenty of exploration and leaping about in the treetops, swimming, boulder traps and lava rooms. Enemies are sparse - the odd bat, crocodile and pig and there are no puzzles or timed elements, but it manages to entertain nicely for approximately an hour. A good example of an early level that has remained enjoyable." - Jay (09-Jun-2016)
"Another level without puzzles, a lot of exploration to find some artifacts and many gymnastics. This one has an old TR3 taste; a jungle with many lagoons with an error in the gameplay design where you can loose a good part of it, jumping directly to the top of a rock without trigger the flipmap to fill the room with water. A bit later there's a problem with a camera in fron of a crawlspaces I couldn't restore until I saved and reloaded. The environments are good, but textures are not well applied in small surfaces. I missed some more enemies and musics too in certain areas and found a single secret near the end. Playable but not very enjoyable." - Jose (01-Dec-2015)
"This level is approaching the ripe old age of eleven, but it still provides about a hour's worth of scenic and engrossing gameplay. We have a lush jungle setting where it's easy for one to get confused and hopelessly lost, so I appreciated having Lizard Queen's detailed walkthrough close by for navigational security (even though she has an apparent aversion to compass directions - sometimes it can be less than clear when you're told to "go left"). The lighting is very good, and the eye candy with the trees, the waterfalls and the native architecture makes the gaming experience even more pleasant. Recommended." - Phil (03-Apr-2012)
"A journey through temples , a lagoon with a sunk plane, caves , and jungle areas with a Coastal atmosphere that I enjoyed a lot. Texturing is not always perfect but the settings look quite good. At one point there was a stunning view on the lagoon when Lara faces the good direction. The game plays well with a good progression , not many enemies but good traps with rolling balls and some platforming action, nothing difficult." - eRIC (25-Oct-2008)
"One of the first jungle levels, and certainly a superior early offering.Beta-testing back then evidently wasn't as meticulous as it is now,as there were numerous places I could by-pass or work my way through in a manner obviously unintended by the builder, but it didn't hamper the overall progression. There was a certain naivety apparent in quite a lot of the Gameplay ideas which probably wouldn't be acceptable today: a flipped room triggered simply by picking up a random object;spikes shooting up from innocuous leaf textures;doors opening because you crowbar'd something off a wall, not because you more logically used a key or pulled a lever;a water pit you can't climb out of should you happen to fall in.However, progression is generally smooth and pretty straghtforward (sometimes too much so,as elaborate areas have been created for no purpose other than to house a simple pick-up)amid well-crafted outdoor jungle/rocky surroundings. Not as good as this builders earlier 'Desert Dam' (an adventure I played years ago,but which has stayed in my memory) but a noteable 'early LE' adventure nonetheless." - Orbit Dream (15-Feb-2008)
"Jungle, you say? Right at the beginning, there's a swimming pool, well, if it's not one, it's definitely textured as one. Nevermind that, though, for soon enough you reach a crashed plane which I thought was very clever. Despite being very linear, you can skip a major part of the level with a simple running jump to the treetops area, thus missing the lava caverns and a couple of trade items along the way. In the treetops, you get both pieces of the Portal Guardian and get access to a final area, which is a bit confusing because you have to find the correct spot to climb onto the treetops (I found the secret by accident). Then you get a couple more trade items and a passage through a waterfall is revealed, then finally you get to place the stars you've brought all along. Texturewise there was an interesting mix, like I mentioned the swimming pool, but overall it worked pretty well and made a convincing jungle level. The boulders were overused, though, as previously stated by other reviewers. 45 minutes, 1 secret. 08/07" - Treeble (09-Aug-2007)
"Laguna Temples is a celebration of colours. 75 minutes long I discovered a fantastically designed area in Pacific style with nice gameplay all the way through (not always easy but fair regarding the traps). The author obviously liked rolling balls (especially towards the end of the level there's a dozen of them) and minimum clothing on our Lara ;-). One mistake: there was a ditch Lara couldn't climb out of anywhere in case she jumped in. Maybe she's still sitting in the water then. Who cares great simple fun level anyway!" - Rüdiger (03-Nov-2003)
"The jungle setting in this level is one my favourites so I really enjoyed playing it. Lara with her nice ponytail and very small top with 'hot' shorts has to explore the areas to find the portal guardian and a knot also pry two stars. The level begins near a sea of some sort and after the earthquake the jungle is revealed. The enemies are crocodiles wild boars and a few bats. Walking and jumping onto tree tops to find the items you need was nice and the jumps avoiding boulders and spikes were exciting. I found one secret and had a camera problem at some point which I solved by reloading a savegame. It's a good level worth playing." - Kristina (03-Sep-2003)
"Laguna Temples is a chaotic level; one has the feeling that Lara's lost in this huge ensemble of rooms: beautiful rooms by the way. The waterfalls the jungle and the tree houses are original but all is confusing. The boulder traps are a bit overdone; thanks God some of the boulders didn't activate so I could finish one of the slope races. No enemies (only a few bats and two pigs) no objects (only two medpacks) one secret (very well hidden: only found it with DOZY). The camera bug was easily avoided but after that moment the camera got stuck in some parts of the rest of the level. Lighting and textures are the best: the jungle is well done and overall the waterfalls. Is a nice level to see but really it's not entertaining at all." - Loupar (15-Jun-2003)
"This was a somewhat enjoyable 50 minutes in the coastal wad made to look very believably jungle-like. I sort of just kept falling into the right situation in this level. I probably should go back and replay it to figure out what I really did as it did not appear to have a lot of rhyme and reason to it at times. It was still an enjoyable time without very many enemies only some crocodiles and you will be obtaining 2 golden stars the 2 pieces of the portal guardian and a pharos knot. Much climbing and jumping in trees and some boulder traps one particularly difficult one to pass. There were some definite camera problems one that had Lara looking at a green wall no matter where she moved or how she turned. After a re-load it didn't occur again." - Momster (22-Sep-2002)
"Ok I guess in such obviously humid surroundings one might want to wear light clothing but in this adventure Lara overdid it a little - that bikini top is just too tiny - I did like the new hair though and still wonder what was written on the backpack. As for the hour long and actually surprisingly linear adventure (although it doesn't feel that linear when you play) you are treated to a beautiful jungle setting with lots of water and even a crashed plane which you get to explore inside for one of the two stars you need. Good use made of camera and music and I also had the camera bug mentioned by other reviewers but reloading a save worked fine. Jumping around the treetops was lots of fun and you get to find a gem a knot and a portal guardian for progression and I also found one secret (a big medipack). Definitely worth a look!" - Michael (23-Aug-2002)
"With a great environment that consists of caves jungles and waterfall laden lagoons this fantastic hour long level is full of exploration over almost every square inch including the many leveled treetops and a crashed plane lying in one of the lagoons. You won't find any enemies here instead there are some extremely deadly traps with which some you have to set off and interact with to pass while wearing the skimpiest outfit I think I have ever seen Lara wear and I noticed when I found myself in a really tight spot that maybe her top was a size too small - you go girl! The only problem I found with this level is that 20 minutes into the game you come to an area where you can go either of 2 ways and if you take the way that leads to the tree climbing area you cannot get back to go on the other 10 minute adventure but you can still finish funnily though the missed adventure seems to be taken to flood the room it branches from so that you can reach the other adventures route which isn't necessary." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"The scenery (textures) in this level is absolutely fantastic and I would have rated it higher except that towards the end of the level after you use the pharohs knot the level sorta dies as the camera gets stuck in one point and will not budge. Lara still moves but you can't see what she's doing or where she's going. Up until then the level was great and I really hope the author will fix this problem." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"A beautiful level with fantastic light effects. A wild style Lara has to find two gold stars and using other artifact run away from a jungle. The environments are fascinating there are temples caverns villages on the tree waterfall and a lot of traps but little enemies sin. I have ended the level in 1 hour and 15 minutes the difficulty is medium and I haven't found secrets but a few little bugs nothing serious." - Boris (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a beautiful jungle-level. Lots of trees swimming and tree-climbing even a crashed airplane. It feels though as if the actual gaming and puzzling had to stand back for the creating of the beautiful 'rooms'; no enemies but a couple of pigs hardly no pickups except for the 'keys' needed to proceed sometimes there are some traps but sometimes you just run through a big part. Sometimes the camera gets stuck so you can't see Lara move and the first time I played I missed a big part of the level because I went the 'wrong' way. But yet it's still worth downloading just because of the looks of it!" - G.Croft (21-Jun-2002)
"This level is a fascinating blend of superb environments deadly traps and tricky jumps. Taking at least an hour to play it made me think of two words: eye candy. Lara sports probably the coolest (and smallest) outfit I've ever seen her in while jumping through treetops swimming through lagoons and exploring caves all while dodging a few boulders and even an alligator or two. What can't this woman do! Overall not a hard level but be on the lookout for spikes and boulders. My only complaint is that at times the camera would get stuck and I would have to load an earlier save and play through again but no big deal. Also I couldn't tell where the end of the level was. I finally dropped down to the very beginning of the level again but I'm not sure if that was the end or not. What a great level though!" - Raider Girl (21-Jun-2002)
"First thing that hit me was Lara's tiny top. Oh well she has to do the running not me. Jungle levels my favorite and I was not disappointed. Not much to do in the shooting department but sometimes I like it like that. Especially if there is exploring to do and that you can do. As I got into the big lake and I wanted to go back to see what happened to a door I was interested in the camera got stuck in a major way. I hate that as I couldn't kept my guns drawn all the time as Lara had some swimming to do. So I gave up on that. A shame though. At other places it happened as well but reloading mostly got rid of that bug. Author didn't fix it and he had ample time as my review is written in the beginning of 2002. The atmosphere was great so it was a bit hard to give accurate points." - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"Jungle waterfalls rivers/lagoons caves temples climbing/jumping in tree canopies - a beautiful level full of exploration. The lighting and textures were excellent - the first pool near the beginning was amazing with beautiful texturing. Could of been a few more enemies and maybe some more pickups in those hard to get areas but this is not a big thing. The level just keeps you wanting to see what's around the corner. There can be a camera bug close to the end with a boulder trap if you step in a certain square." - Nutman (21-Jun-2002)
"Wow this was the greatest outfit I've ever seen in custom level. But this was not the only nice thing in this level. Very good lights beautiful textures and a really good gameplay gave me 1 hour of nice entertainment. I have no problem with the camera-bug. You could easily avoid it if you did enter a certain square." - Xxenofex (21-Jun-2002)
"A very good level a cool outfit for Lara great environments that never stopped to amaze me as I went further in the level. The waterfalls lagoons jungle areas are made very professionally even for that time when the level was released. The level was great from the start till the part when you placed the first knot it became boring for some reason later. Going through the same things again and again. The puzzles weren't too hard but I had a fun hour of completing them. Maybe the rolling balls were too much but the traps were quite well placed and thought out. I could find only one secret so either the rest were well hidden or I found the only one. About the camera bug I could 'fix' it with saving the game straight afterwards the bug appeared and then loading the level again. This level is worth to at least take a look at it if not play it to the end." - eTux (21-Jun-2002)
"A leverfree junglespree with a lot of cubic trees. For some reason I wasn't able to complete this on my first try which is strange as the level is not that difficult and though you have to backtrack in order to place the various items progression is kinda linear. There are hardly any enemies and therefore only a few pick ups but that's not a bad thing actually. I know it's awfully hot in those exotic places but Lara's outfit verges on indecent exposure but then again you won't meet any humans on the laguna. It's great fun to play and most areas summon up this rainforest atmosphere rather nicely however it's not one of the great levels cause I got the feeling the author was making this up as he went along. No overall concept as far as the course is concerned the boulder traps are a bit repetitive and there aren't many puzzles. It's more or less a matter of finding your way around but if you like this sort of thing you will have a wonderful time here." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
