Reviewer's comments |
"Not a bad maiden release for this builder who has since improved much further (at least
based on the scores for the subsequent levels that I have yet to play). What you get here is
a 20 minute raid in a TR2 environment with the usual TR2 bad guys to battle, including two
flamethrower guys. The bigger challenge for me though was that I did not have a health or an
oxygen bar visible (maybe my own config setup?) and there are two very long swims to master,
so I had do these 2-3 times until I got them right (without actually knowing how close I was
or not). I also had one game crash, but it did not reoccur after reloading a save. The three
secrets were a good addition (fairly easy to find) and while there is solid camera work,
maybe one more would have been useful for the final backtrack. I liked the barrels near the
end and looking forward to see further work from this builder." - MichaelP (13-Feb-2024) |

"This level caught my attention, as I LOVE the Offshore Rig setting of TR2.
The only problem is that, well... it feels more like a test-first level of thewolf:
Graphical glitches here and there, giant boxy rooms, enemies here and there, random
gameplay.
I mean, it's not boring at least, since it's extremly short. Still had my little fun.
Overall, thewolf brings a very basic debut level, it seems more like an Editor-Test more
than a proper fleshed out level.
Would love to see more from the author and see how he improves. The bases are there.
Recommended? No.
Difficulty? Easy
Duration? Approx. 20-30 minutes." - TombExplorer (09-Oct-2022) |

"A good number of reviews begin with the phrase - not a bad debut' or variations thereof,
and whenever that happens, you don't have to be the most perceptive indivual to hear the
heavy footfalls of a big fat but heading your way. Yet there's nothing aggravating
in this brisk 25-minute adventure, which takes place in an "Oil Rig" environment that may
not look particularly inspired, but is competently constructed (bar a wafer-thin wall or
two) and textured (bar a few that are stretched, and the animated water texture on Lara's
butt). There are a couple of neat ideas ( - swimming againt the fan', oil drum stampede) and
three good secrets, the backtracking is kept within reasonable limits, and, crucially (for
this is a TR2 level), the combat is handled quite well and given an extra edge by the
scarcity of medipacks. Working so hard to acquire the M-16 may seem a bit like a wasted
effort, but it did come in handy when I had to get rid of the second flamethrower guy
(they never managed to set me on fire, which always makes me happy).
I have to file an obligatory complaint about the magic doberman that materialises in your
back at the end, and about the forced health loss you have to endure at one point. I'm
also prepared to admit that the fact that the boss you have to defeat at the end of the
level turns out to be a stack of pushable crates may be a little disappointing, the more
so since the builder decided to use the end of the world against you (Lara could simply
jump on top of the stack if the room didn't end immediately above it); but on the whole I
enjoyed this little escapade rather more than I expected going in. Unlike certain other
reviewers, I experienced no crashes, encountered only a single room which was dark (flares
are provided), received occasional camera hints (though none were really necessary), and
could see my air bar depleting very clearly when I was about to cop it; so on this one,
I'm with DJ Full and against the motley crew of its detractors." - Mulf (23-Feb-2022) |

"Short but a very nice and enjoyable level to play, finished it in 17min, found 3
secrets, not too hard.
I ll give it 8/10, Recommend it :)" - p1kaa (29-Sep-2020) |

"This is a very brief TR2 raid in an oil
rig setting. It's not too badly made, but
it's a bit too basic and rather crudely
textured in places, so the visuals were a
bit too unexciting. Gameplay is very
simple, with one fairly large backtrack
and an admittedly rather neat underwater
fan sequence, but otherwise there's
nothing really standout and the health
robbing fall was just unnecessary. I also
encountered a crash while in a swimming
passage, but the air and health bars were
perfectly visible (albeit small) in my
game." - Ryan (04-Sep-2018) |

"Short TR2 level of around 20 minutes that will have you shooting thugs, crows, dogs and those flame thrower guys. Unfortunately the level crashes often in the underwater sequences and compatibility mode just makes it worse. So save often and reload the game and try again. Not a bad little level but could have been expanded with a few puzzles as except for right at the end, there were none. Textures had the usual fade outs and some paper thin walls are in evidence but this seems to be the norm for these TR unofficial levels unfortunately." - Torry (01-Jun-2018) |
|
"Another oil rig-level where Lara attempts to escape. To be
honest, this one didn't entertain me much, because there is
nothing special about this level. It's very short and has
basic, boxy rooms with short amount of decoration. The
secrets were too easy to find. I was surprised when I
already found the 3rd secret after 10 minutes of playing.
The gameplay was also a little bit boring, because the
puzzles are easy and quickly solved. Texturing is the same
as in all other oil rig levels, nothing special." - Nuri (18-Mar-2018) |

"I'm happy to report this is a fast paced and quite enjoyable base level, although base type levels are not what you might call a fan favorite. There are a few issues, such as wafer-thin walls, stretched textures and low invisible ceilings, but generally speaking it's a very straightforward romp in which you run back and forth after a few levers to open doors and proceed until you eventually make your escape from this place. 20 minutes, 2 secrets. 12/2017" - Treeble (29-Dec-2017) |

"If handled with creativity,it IS still possible to
construct complex and evocative TR2 levels -
unfortunately, this isn't one of them. True, there are one or
two new ideas present (the 'swimming against the fan'
sequence;and the lung-busting swim without the air bar
informing you when you're about to cop it);but (with the
exception of an amusing jump over massed rolling barrels)
they weren't particularly inspiring.Everything else is all
about running, shooting and backtracking.Textures have been
applied efficiently, but the architecture lacks any
complexity;and darkness is plastered on indiscriminately.
It's decent enough for a short nostalgic journey into TR2
territory, for those who simply can't get enough of flame-
throwing heavies and dogs...at least we were spared the
hideous frogmen!" - Orbit Dream (06-Oct-2017) |

"Not bad. All basics covered, meaningful rooms applied plus
some interesting battle combos added, maybe except that guy
with his dog when you pull out of a water hole - a boosted
variant of 40 Fathoms ending. The flares could be less
missable since the following location is entirely dark, and
there could be definitely less repassaging through this
level - runtime needed is at least 50% too long. For me the
game had a soft crash in the last underwater corridor but
I'm not sure if it's a failed map setup or my PC. Also
there's a text editor to customize all text lines, it
doesn't have to be named Fool's Gold anymore. Anyway
a very promising thing, I'm glad we got so many TR2
builders recently." - DJ Full (28-Sep-2017) |
|
"This is a fairly classic TR2, replete with thugs and dogs as Lara runs and swims her way through a series of rather dull looking rooms. It's an easy enough raid, with not too much boring backtracking and certainly a decent debut, but it's unlikely to stay in your mind for very long after you finish it." - Jay (25-Sep-2017) |

"Not a bad debut but in comparison to some previous unofficial levels there is still much work to be done to create an all-round nice game. All the areas are quite simplistic and mostly boxy, there are paper thin walls present, the lighting is barely touched and the texturing also leaves a lot to be desired (actually it's not that often to see streched textures in TR 2 levels but here I found some). Some reviewers already mentioned the texture bug on Lara's butt... ;). Still the areas don't look unbelievable and it's visible that some care has gone into the design. There are also attempts to create some interesting gameplay, some of which work better than others. There are a few okay platforming sequences, but things like the long drop causing you to lose a lot of health or the very long swims (in particular, the one fighting some very odd currents) coupled with the bug with the missing health and air bars that occurred to me as well didn't quite leave a nice taste. The three secrets are actually rather well hidden and I liked the enemy placement as well, never being unfair to the player (except, maybe, at the very start) but still providing nice additional challenges. Overall, not bad for a start as I said, but there's still way to go. 14 minutes." - manarch2 (20-Sep-2017) |
|
"Not a bad debut level although it did get a bit boring to have to do the long swim again and again. Not many pick-ups and I special in the medipacks department. That almost lethal drop serves no purpose in my opinion. Found 3 secrets and I still hate the flamethrower guy. The huge fan is also not on my wish list as that part is pretty hard and specially when medipacks are scares. But there is for sure potential here." - Gerty (20-Sep-2017) |
|
"Not a bad debut. The level is very short with few and simple tasks; the only interest here is to look for the secrets and take care with the health, 'cause there are few medipacks and many enemies to shoot. It's possible the player reach the room with the very long drop without medipacks, where Lara loses almost all the health and can't continue playing, so the large medipack should be at the top and not at the bottom, or place a ladder to safety drop. Anyway a level worth to play and a promising builder. I hope this architect can continue building in the future." - Jose (19-Sep-2017) |

"It's a good start for this author, he really knows how to
handle the basics of the unofficial editor, but there is
still a way to go. I didn't feel like it has too many
enemies, but they are placed in spots that can do a lot of
damage (like when you get out of the water), but that could
be fixed with some extra medipacks. You have to be careful
with the very thin walls because they take away credibility
to the atmosphere. I see some interesting ideas like
swimming against the current that being a little better
applied would've been more fun (it was very difficult
because I always run out of oxygen, but it is an original
detail). It also brings a lot to the environment the music,
which could be added in the next installment as well as
renaming the original level by yours. It is good to see that
there is a lot of interest lately in the TR2 engine and I
hope to see more soon! I found the 3 secrets and finished it
in 15 minutes." - Feder (16-Sep-2017) |

"For a debut level, and a TR2 level at that, this one isn't bad at all. I managed to get through all by myself, with no available walkthrough or stuck thread for help, in a little less than 30 minutes. There's a bit of backtracking involved, but the cut scenes tell you where you need to go. If there were any secrets or additional weapons, I didn't find them. It's somewhat dark in spots, but you have enough flares to find your way. Not a barn burner by any means, but certainly playable." - Phil (15-Sep-2017) |

"For a first level a fair result but it's very obvious that the level is made by someone unexperienced with many beginners'
mistakes. I had some problems with the game ( that are maybe only for me ) with not seeing the health bar, so it was kind
of harder to play, but won't be counted in the rating. The architecture is very basic with not much work on the light and
with not much imagination. I could call it a ËstraightforwardË level creating pattern. Sometimes rough, stretched/wrong
rotated texturing with thin walls catched my eyes. Also, the gameplay was very basic, sometimes feeling like playing a
polygon raid and not a real tomb raider game. There were no camera hints so it's always a guessing game after pulling any
switch. Too many enemies for my taste… really too many … right at the beginning I was shocked that I got ambushed by a dog,
a soldier and a flamethrower guy that killed me instantly. Maybe adding a bird would complete the party. I don't know why
most first level releases have this overuse of enemies … maybe compensating for other disadvantages ? ËIf the player
doesn't enjoy the view, at least he should be distracted with enemiesË. Also, there is a lack of medipacks and a lack of
flares. I had to use my pistols too often to light my way in dark corners and areas. Lara's butt had a weird error with a
transparent water texture. Overall, a short nice first level from the author showing us that he mastered the first steps of
level building and that he is ready to explore the editor. Widen his horizon. Hopefully, he will decide to use modern NGLE
because I think that maximum potential can't be achieved with older engines. Waiting for the next released and hoping he
won't complain in the forums ( Ëhow can he say I don't have the imaginationË, Ëit's a tribute, can't be rated under 8Ë).
Joke aside, I actually had fun playing this level, it was relaxing, easy, short … good work, but there is huge room for
progress. I recommend carefully reading all reviews that the level will receive and take more time in creating the next
level ( more work on room design and light ). Important not to make mistakes like some authors with levels submitting every
week. Recommended only for hardcore TR2 nostalgic players." - Gorty (15-Sep-2017) |

"Much like the title implies, this is a brief half-hour run through yet another oil rig(with competent handling across all design aspects).
And aside from one potentially lethal high drop into an arbitrarily dark room filled with a couple of rats, alongside swimming against the strength of an underwater fan, avoiding presumably the entire oil drum production on the rig at once and an incredibly easy pushable crate puzzle, gameplay isn't anything too interesting overall.
So in conclusion, an okay first attempt by a new builder at the end of the day. Might wanna look into fixing that water texture error on Lara's posterior for next time though." - Ceamonks890 (15-Sep-2017) |
