Reviewer's comments |
"By far the best tr1 level ever. The creativity for gameplay and textures on the last level is amazing. My favourite part about this levelset is that it manages to feel like an actual expansion made by core design. Thats how good it is. There are 4 levels that are all unique from each other. An amazing nordic adventure, i give it a 9.8/10." - Sabbath (18-May-2023) |
|
"This one should have been called "More Unfinished Business" as it feels exactly like playing an expansion. Four levels, all of them are great and yet totally different from each other. Elaborate vertical version of Caves, TR1 version of The Deck, amazing challenges of Thor who is finally placed in the appropriate mythology and a platform-based Atlantis. It looks almost as good as TR1 possibly can (apart from some occasional generic areas) and it plays amazingly. There's a lot of variety with tasks and clever puzzles and finally a good balance of enemies and items. If I had to look for the flaws, maybe there's too much water throughout the levels, but fortunately there's not much of the underwater gameplay, so that's another well-balanced aspect of the game. If you can stand TR1 engine, then this is a must-play level." - Tolle87 (15-Jan-2023) |

"A fantastic adventure through an assortment of nordic ruins as Lara searches for Natla's
new hive which serves as a final level. The four lovingly crafted maps are a sight to
behold both in visual and design aspects. The camerawork and use of ambient soundtracks
always hit when the player is meant to feel intrigue or awe at special location. The
textures are of course, carefully placed on every surface to make the locations as
believable as possible. Every level you play through will have a unique theme and will act
as a memorable location on your journey. I never struggled to figure out where to go as
the author struck a perfect balance between linear and branched progression, never giving
you a too open level to get completely lost in. The puzzles were very enjoyable and fun to
solve, a certain number of them being unique and visually appealing. Secrets are well
placed and not obtuse...must I go on? I hardly have anything to criticize with this
release as this is some of the best you'll get with the TR1 engine. I would even recommend
this to players who don't generally play TR1 maps as there is definitely enough quality
content here to keep anyone entertained. If I did have any complaints they would be
nitpicks at best, and since the site doesn't allow me to rate in decimals, it's easily
tens all around. Very highly recommended. Incredible job, Feder!" - LuxQSD (22-Mar-2022) |

"This level reminds me of the OG tr1, same vibes same soundtracks and same feeling
overall, if you would tell me this is an official expansion I would've believed because
simply this level is well build in a professional manner. I enjoyed every level and
every minutes I spend exploring and finding secrets of this level. I played most of
Feder trle's and I was never disappointed, he always bring high quality level
production. Highly recommend it :D" - p1kaa (06-Jul-2021) |

"Another excellent, multi-leveled TR1 release from Feder that combines the BtB2013 environment textures with that of TR1's own assets, contributing to an overall package that's equal parts memorable and unique (with puzzles and combat encounters that are largely challenging but fair, even if the search for five cogs in Level 2 felt like a bit much with such a vast map to cover and a timed door permanently closing upon obtaining a rusty key within a flooded room in Level 3, could have been better telegraphed without coming off as a bit mean for first-timers as it is).
But despite those personal qualms and the audio triggers having a tendency to loop upon stepping on them again, this is one levelset that is well-worth playing through to the end. Highly recommended!" - Ceamonks890 (16-Mar-2021) |

"Absolutely brilliant! The levels are beautiful. Enemy and boulder scares, carefully timing
jumps-everything classic to a TR level. Love love love these levels." - kimmybambi (27-Feb-2021) |
|
"What a great level set. I'm really amazed how Feder pushed the limits of the TR1 engine
to make such amazing and beautiful levels. Everything is on point and polished.
Practically I don't have any remarks to this level set. Recommended for every TR fan
this custom will make you feel very nostalgic." - Mahetus (11-Feb-2021) |
|
"This is fantastic! Feder is a masterful builder, all of the levels here look very polished
and were a treat to play, with a great mix of puzzles, combat and platforming. If someone
had told me that this was a long lost DLC developed by core design themselves, I would
believe them in a heartbeat, such is the quality. Levels 2 and 3 are real standouts but
all 4 levels are very good. I personally found the difficulty level just about right,
constantly felt challenged but never in a frustrated sense. This is one of the first
TRLE's i have played, and what a great start. Will be playing all of feder's levels." - Passalaqua (05-Jan-2021) |
|
"Probably the ONLY level I played recently which is exactly as long as it should be. Aside of that, it nails everything which normally annoys me in other levels: 1) every secret is findable with enough effort invested 2) every jump, no matter how hard, is possible, 3) every fight has a fair margin, 3) you never run out of ammo and can utilize different combat strategies, 4) yet you don't need a single medipack without losing the sense of challenge. Then the game gives you much more than the standards, being innovative both in scenery and gameplay design, while keeping flawless chaptered plot. It also looks as decent as it can in TR1 engine, save for occasional missing contrast and a bit overdone texture blend in the final parts. The only thing I wanted but didn't get is the possibility to search the captain's cabin - something should have been there after that epic door was showcased in the middle of the map." - DJ Full (16-Nov-2020) |

"I have never been disappointed with Feder. His work is amazing" - TRaider1996 (21-Oct-2020) |
|
"This might well be the definitive experience of all custom TR1 levels (and maybe even beyond). These four levels are absolutely beautiful, and due to the limitations of the engine such as the color depth and general lack of moves, it's incredibly nostalgic while being a fresh take. It simply hits all the right notes. Sure, the author could have achieved equally impressive things with any posterior version of the game engine, but the maze with the moving walls near the end is one such thing that wouldn't be possible. The overall use of Atlantis enemies and environments would probably fall flat as well, so ultimately limiting this to the TR1 engine was for the best. Level design is impressive, with quite expansive layouts such as the ship inside the cave or the entirety of Thor's Hall which would have earned top scores from me even as a stand alone release. Most important of all, these levels are fun to play despite the somewhat overwhelming approach. I'm only sorry I didn't play them sooner! 2h20min, 3 secrets. 08/20" - Treeble (09-Aug-2020) |
|
"Excellent. I think the best TR1 custom levels I've ever played. I can't imagine what this talented builder could do with the new TR engines and much more features. This package captures all the essence of the old-time Tomb Raider games. A set of levels not just for nostalgists, but for all fans of author levels. Highly recommended." - Jose (27-Jul-2020) |
|
"This is problably the best TR1 custom level. Approaches the
original TR1 in terms of gameplay quality. Feder's work in
the texturing and architecture of the rooms is amazing. I
can only agree with what the other reviewers mentioned, and
encourage Feder to continue building levels of TR1, TR2 and
TR3. The Nordic Adventure certainly deserves a place in the
Hall of Fame of de TRLE. Highly recommended for all Tomb
Raider fans." - Mister-B (23-Jul-2020) |

"First things first: This was the first time, that I played
a TR1-custom level with the TombATI executable on Windows
10 instead of the Dosbox version and it's really
impressive how fine that just works. There are no loading
moments and the graphics look somehow more beautiful
(higher resolution, more detail in color). And well,
Feder's level itself is once again a mind-blowing
experience. This time he really put a lot of creativity in
it and payed much attention to the level design and
texturing, lighting etc. Or should I say: "even more"? I
mean "Ruins of the lost city" was already a great release
and I never thought, that any TR1-release would overcome
it this soon. So level design was magnificent, the
environments were magnificent, the TR1-music always is
magnificent and was used properly over the entire
adventure and there is even a new sort of puzzle including
a maze, that I have never witnessed before. And my humble
self was once again able to find all secrets, even though
I had to reload several times after seeing the level-end
statistics. And I have to say, that this builder really
knows how to implement secrets in his game in a "true Tomb
raider way". That makes it always worth to take your time
to look after the secrets for me." - Nuri (19-Jul-2020) |

"I was excited to see another Feder game released, and I
wasn't disappointed!
Gameplay and puzzles: Many unique puzzles, one of which
literally had me saying "Ohhh!" when I figured
it out. Many new challenges and some old ones from
original game, like boulder traps, that were placed
tastefully throughout the level and always keeping the
player on their toes.
Enemies, objects and secrets: A great amount of effort
was devoted toward objects, both from TR1 and
new, and were placed throughout the levels pretty well. I
loved Thor's hammer and how it played a
different role than the original game. Secrets felt
rewarding to find. Enemies weren't overdone and
complimented the gameplay. There were a lot of "big open
rooms", but they were mostly pits below that
the player would fall to their death if they weren't
careful.
Atmosphere, sound and cameras: I actually had chills from
some of the places where the music was
placed so perfectly. Each level had a unique atmosphere
that was truly brilliant. Cameras were used
effectively to offer clues or introduce a new area from a
unique perspective.
Lighting and textures: I believe the textures were
borrowed from the TR1 HD texture pack. They looked
very nice in these levels and helped to create stunning
environments. Lighting was overall pretty
good, but perhaps the first level was a bit brighter than
it should have been in the caves, though I
may be sounding a bit picky on this one.
There are two other miscellaneous suggestions I have.
First is some of the ledges, particularly in the
boat level-- the room where you place the cogs-- some of
the ledges Lara would not grab onto very
easily. I had to position her just right and do a bit of
messing around with keys to get her to grab
onto it. My second suggestion is the **SPOILERS** rainbow
bridge. I absolutely loved this (doesn't it
nod at Bifröst in Norse mythology?) I only wished there
was more to it than pull a lever and use it to
reach the door to the next area. It looked stunning! I
would definitely have it play a larger, more
dramatic role. :)" - dragooncroft (13-Jul-2020) |

"Here we have Atlantis goons to shoot, boulders to dodge, and Nordic ruins to explore. This set of four levels provides an entertaining balance of platforming, combat, traps, and puzzles. Despite the limited geometry options in the TR1 engine, the architecture was quite good. There was something about stumbling upon the large ship in particular that gave me a feeling of excitement, that was my favorite area to raid. The rainbow bridge was also quite fitting and very unique. Some areas were a bit too dark for my tastes, but nothing severe. Some of the jumps may be difficult for some players (grabbing during a forward jump in TR1 is delayed) but other than that I would fully recommend this adventure." - JesseG (14-Jun-2020) |
|
"This is a highly nostalgic four-level adventure utilizing
TR1 engine. I enjoyed every moment of exploring the
underground Nordic ruins and halls and the shipwreck that
are crafted with great care. During your playing time, you
will be completing several timed runs, do some item
hunting, solve push block and switch puzzles, etc. I also
liked very much fighting against enemies from TR1, which
was definitely more challenging than the usual fights seen
in custom levels. I had completely forgotten how tough the
enemies are in TR1. To put it briefly, I highly recommend
this nostalgic set of levels for everybody and especially
for those who like TR1-style atmosphere." - Samu (08-Jun-2020) |
|
"I'm really not a TR1 expert, so I'm not sure I'm rating
this four-level set adequately. I must say I wasn't
expecting that much and I really didn't want a lot of
Atlanteans to show up. Well... From where I stand, this
brings me back to Lara's first steps on DOS (sure, I can
recognize the textures, the sort of atmosphere, the
enemies, the traps, that funny-looking lava included) and
I actually thought it was a great job. I never got bored
and I liked it all, even the Atlanteans, in what I'd call
a rather creative adventure. Perhaps due to something in
my keyboard settings, perhaps due to something in the
engine itself, I had occasional problems with the jumps
(didn't Lara actually jump at times or was it that
dreaded delay people talked about?), which became an
issue especially during timed sequences, as well as Lara
sometimes not grabbing up to certain edges unless I kept
trying and trying. The final battle and traps sequence
was a blast. Loved it." - Jorge22 (25-May-2020) |
|
"This is a nicely made and accomplished TR1
set of four levels. Gameplay throughout is
mostly balanced (aside from a couple of trap
combinations and jumps that could be
surprisingly difficult), with a goodly array
of puzzles, traps, gymnastics, exploration
and enemy fights, with the final Natla
encounter proving quite brutal to Lara's
health. The scenery throughout is quite
attractive and you get a nice variety of
areas to visit, with the final level
boasting some impressive architecture and
the secrets are well hidden throughout. The
only odd glitch is that the audio triggers
more than once if you step over certain
tiles again, but otherwise, great enjoyment." - Ryan (25-May-2020) |

"Feder has given us yet another solid retro-style adventure using the first Tomb Raider engine. It almost feels like a 'Gold' add-on to the original Core Design 'Gold' package.
The atmosphere and objects are very well done, with custom items and well-placed textures in the form of murals and carved surfaces tastefully applied throughout the environments. Lighting was also well done. The engine is limited but Feder does a great job using the tools provided and I'd say that all things considered what you see here is as good as it gets.
I had an issue getting the music pieces to play properly. The secret chimes worked, as well as the moody, ambient background track, but none of the different music clips. Feder is great at making use of camera panning at just the right times and places to create a sense of wonder or trepidation. The light touch with an excellent flair for the dramatic, the pans and angles are never annoying or detract from the gameplay in any way. The overall experience is pleasant to behold and immersive.
Gameplay is demanding and of moderate difficulty, with some trap sequences requiring a few tries to successfully navigate. There is nothing here that will have players 'stuck' overly long with the exception, maybe of the maze in the final level. Play is mostly focused on exploration, platforming, use of key objects and pulling switches. In other words, classic. The traps are pretty unforgiving, mind you. Small margin for error. The third and fourth levels are my favorite in terms of play, with a varied mix of tasks to accomplish.
Some of the secrets are tricky, and I missed 3, overall. This one is getting shelved in the favorites folder on my hard drive, since I know I will be replaying!" - Chel (25-May-2020) |

"I've picked on this builder over the years because of his
insistence upon confining his considerable talents to the
obsolete TR1 to TR3 engines. I see, however, that he has
elected to embark upon a legal career, so he must of
necessity be a nice guy. I wish he would at least take a
stab at a TR4 level before he hangs up his level building
hat, but I guess that's his business. I'll reluctantly drop
the subject with the observation that this is not unlike Leo
Tolstoy deciding to write nothing but nursery rhymes
throughout his literary career. Once I got Nordic Adventure
to play on my computer I had an immensely good time
navigating the crude TR1 environs from the first level to
the last. What I did was to download a simple TR1 level
recently submitted by a first-time builder, then I
substituted one data folder for the other and wound up with
a 42 MB download instead of one with considerably more
bloat. I had to do without the music files, and the level
names were the same as in the TR1 original, but to me those
were negligible sacrifices. I found the four levels to be
satisfyingly invigorating, with a nice mix of puzzles,
jumps, enemies, secrets and environments. Each one takes 30
to 45 minutes to complete, and by the time you reach the end
you feel like you've been the beneficiary of a creative
raid. Recommended for those stuck in a 20-year rut." - Phil (25-May-2020) |

"When I first started this TRLE, I was expecting just
another TR1 short level. What I found was a 4 level
masterpiece that resembles so much the original TR1
nostalgia that I would add it as an extra sequel for the
original core design game.
Gameplaywise, the level has a bit of everything. Gorgeous
areas to explore (the ship was my favourite), lots of
beautifully put traps, various types of enemies (some
that were a challenge! I like challenges) and not least
important, INCREDIBLE puzzle areas.
Secrets were smartly placed.
I only got stuck once in this trle, on the ship area
where I managed to find the secret rather than the cog
wheel first.
The cameras, sounds, atmosphere, completely enhancing the
TR1 feel to the trle.
The lightning was perfect, not too dark, not too bright,
and the textures incredibly put together for the first 3
levels. I did felt the last level texturing was a bit
rushed and lacking the "nordic feeling" from the rest of
the trle, therefore giving it a 9.
In conclusion, a must have on anyones TRLE's collection.
I greatly recommend it to anyone." - LOTRKingluis (17-May-2020) |

"In the last TR 1 level from Feder I said that using the TR 1 engine might not be a very good option due to its limitations, but this one proves me wrong. A complete and really amazing levelset is what we get here, very nicely using the BtB'13 textures and also a few objects and great atmosphere. Yes the missing one shot triggers for the audio is annoying as well as a few rather dark spot as flares aren't available, but most of the areas, especially in the third level, are stunning to say the least. The gameplay is fluent and diverse throughout the whole 1:25 hours this game lasted for me, and the TR 1 traps and puzzles are creatively implemented in this game. I did not so much like the timed swim in the third level where you are stuck for good if you miss it the first time around, as well as a few booby traps and puzzles without hints (more puzzles where the players can/have to work out something by themselves would be great), but generally this game is very enjoyable. Enemies are well placed and the 10 secrets were a nice addition although again the game ended with too much ammo left in the inventory. Anyway, this is hands down the best TR 1 adventure out there and one not to miss." - manarch2 (16-May-2020) |

"One of the best TR1 adventures I've played in a really long
time . I am in complete awe with what Feder managed to pull
off . Great atmosphere, puzzles and platforming . Definite
replay value, well done !" - Zuxuna (07-May-2020) |

"What a simply wonderful excursion into Tomb Raider 1 territory. I enjoyed every minute here even if some of the areas were very tough to negotiate. Secrets also were very hard to find. I found none in the first and last level, two in the second level and only one in the third level. The hunt for the five wheel cogs in level two was fantastic. Honestly, I cannot praise this highly enough. A wonderful effort that should be applauded. I played using the tombati exe and had no problems whatsoever. Thank you Feder." - Torry (06-May-2020) |
|
"Fantastic level in the TR1 engine! When I played, my jaw just dropped. Awesome atmosphere, wonderful architecture, beautiful textures, lots of clever puzzles. A lot of new objects that also suprised me. The music was awesome. The first three levels are in the Nordic style, and the last level is in the Atlantis mishmash with Nordic. To sum up it's an amazing custom that is worth playing. I would also like to see another custom on the TR1 engine of this author someday. Well done!" - BlackWolfTR (06-May-2020) |

"This is a four-level Tomb Raider 1 set, and as the name suggests, it's Nordic themed, with good use of the BTB Northern Legend texture set. It mixes in various TR1 texture sets (including some HD versions) as well, and they fit together to create some quite unique themes. There's also a nice shift in the enemy and object use to fit with the evolving setting as you make progress. The lighting does what it can with the limits of TR1's engine, but a lot of the BTB textures do suffer from being a bit monochrome with TR1's white lighting, as they are greyish and can get a bit repetitive with no coloured lighting to play off of. The other themes mixed in do help though. There are also a lot of impressive large-scale areas, with a high level of detail despite that.
Gameplay is probably the most involved in a Feder set so far, and it does what it can with TR1's limited moveset. There's a mix of linear obstacles and open exploration areas, and the levels offer different styles, with the difficulty ramping up well to some brutal trap gauntlets and combat. While a bit tougher, the way the progression works fits right in with TR1 itself to the point it almost feels like a lost section. In the second level there was a odd moment where a secret seemed simpler to discover than a key item, but that's the only progression issue I had. There's also a bug where reloading saves makes music triggers replay, but I guess that's an engine problem. An excellent set, and the way it progresses is worth finding out yourself. Probably the best TR1 set out there." - Mman (06-May-2020) |

"There are no words for describe this incredible adventure.
And build with the TR1 engine.
This level can easily be a Gold version of tr1 Gold.
Each levels are beautiful but I think my personnal favorite is the second level in the big ship. Just WHOUAAAA !!
I also really liked the viking/nordic atmosphere with the Greece objects and elements. Nice and perfect choise.
Congratulation Feder for this adventure and I hope play another one very quickly." - Bigfoot (05-May-2020) |
|
"A nice little TR1 themed custom level with enemies, traps
and difficult puzzles to solve. I would recommend you play
and download this level for yourself. The traps
sometimes take a few attempts and the secrets are really
well hidden 36/40" - JoeTheCrazyGamer (04-May-2020) |
|
"Again a great multi (4) levels game by Feder , very well balanced between discovery and action , somewhat inspired by TR1 (Peru , Greece and Atantis), rather easy in the first two levels , a bit more challenging in the last two with some original ideas and technical achievements. Finding all secrets is difficult , and sometimes you need to do some extra gameplay to get a single pickup (i like this approach
of objects placement). In some places you can hear again the same audio if you stand again on the same spot which i found strange and anticlimatic (aside from this detail the atmosphere is pretty good). The looks are quite good for a TR1 game, the textures of the BtB Northern Legends package fit very well in here. Quite a satisfying and well done raid, and one that does not really need a walkthrough (except maybe for the secrets) given the fluency of the progression." - eRIC (04-May-2020) |

"Excellent adventure set in TR1! Feder has brought us another
great game that they are always a pleasure to play.
Recommended for those nostalgic for the originals! Thank you
Feder ..." - McRaider (03-May-2020) |

"This is a really good level. It has some nice unique ideas i'd like to see in more custom levels. Apart from some minor issues like ridiculously placed spikes I had a lot of fun playing this series of levels." - Raildex (01-May-2020) |
