Reviewer's comments
"A creative home level, but I really hated the maze part. The maze isn't very complex, but it got these rotating knives, which are very hard to pass without dying or getting hurt. This was in combination with some hard to find items you had to get there. There is a hints system, that shows arrows where to go next if you walk into the big yellow question marks. The hint system didn't help there. the hints simply lead you through the maze. Past the maze you will realize that you have to get laser sight and revolver (the last hint arrow points towards a lattice not reachable by normal guns). Now what do you do, spend time running through the maze, exhausting medipacks, and looking for what to do? I had to look at the WT really close to figure out that I actually had to walk into some trigger pads in the maze which I apparently missed. (The trigger pads open blocks somewhere else in the maze.) So I had to move forth and back through the knives again. The solution was pretty simple, but I got stuck (and subsequently confused by the WTs) badly enough that I thought I ran into a bug. I think this part is unreasonably hard, especially because the hints system suggests that everything is much easier in general. Some of the later gameplay was a bit obtuse and mean too, like the kayak, which is hard to control, but it's possible and easier not to use it. To be fair, the rest of the gameplay was much better, and it had some fun and creative ideas, also looking pretty in some places. So although I can't recommend this level because the maze frustrated me too much, I think this builder has potential." - tuxraider (24-Jun-2023)
"Here we have a 3 part level set with the first and third level set in a mansion and it grounds and the 2nd level underground in a secret area with quadbike friendly industrial tunnels and crazy kayak water rides! Definitely different for a mansion based game so well done for the variety in environments here, as for the gameplay? well that's a bit of mixed bag of both fun platforming puzzles, traps and tricky timed runs with some very annoying and tedious tasks (the hedge maze and the long push-able box task come to mind) The game offers helpful yellow arrows in quite a few areas to make sure you don't get lost and fed up but then totally contradicts this helpful approach later on with such obscure and unfairly hidden tasks and paths needed for progression (the hedge colored block comes to mind). The setting is on a stormy night with lara all dressed up for a event but unable to find the gate keys and so this is the mission for the whole game and when you find the key and get out the gate the level finishes. I found the visuals and atmosphere top notch here, absolutely gorgeous! especially inside the mansion itself, but the music leaves a lot to be desired with very repetitive AOD vibes. So on the whole i found this level very hit and miss in a lot of areas but its definitely worth playing for the fun experiences you do get." - John (29-Jan-2023)
"This was sometimes 10/10 and sometimes 0 because of perfect consistency in one places and perfect inconsistency elsewhere. We got a manor with excellent detail level, followed by a flat maze. We got a useful kayak followed by a totally useless quad. And we have good secrets mixed with crap secrets. I also counted some softlocks, with Winston in level one, and pushblock in level two. The biggest problem is the hint system: instead of making difficult puzzles easier, they rather make unfair parts spoiled. They also never deactivate, even after the puzzle is solved, so in no time the scenery gets littered with arrows. I mean: this level is still good if you decide to use the backseat system all the way, but in such case what's the point in playing. All summarized, it's another game which could have been a masterpiece if done more consistently, but it's still recommended to try at some point." - DJ Full (30-Oct-2020)
"This levels have a good design, but I'm not very agree with the confusing gameplay, with no entertaining tasks, only run and run from place to place pulling switches (the timed wheels are too tight) and looking for objects. In certain areas you think that you need to accomplish some tasks like in the room with the appearing and disappearing ledges or the small room with the jumpswitch and several movable crates, but after a lot of work the only thing you get is a single secret. I liked the arrow hints and the ride with the quad, but few more; about the kayak, it could be more useful if there were not several fallings where you miss a lot of health. The camera hints are good too, as the texturization, but the musics are not very aproppriate. Even so, a couple of levels worth to take a try if you like exploration." - Jose (24-Sep-2020)
"Winston, oh Winston! It's not my habit to say so, but unlike previous reviewers, I actually found this levelset somewhat tedious and I felt like the music and sounds, especially the AoD music, was getting on my nerves. Enemies are rats and bats and there's a whole lot of backtracking and confusion involved, fortunately aided by the yellow arrows feature. It can get very dark at times, although there are more than enough flares to help you there. There is basically no interaction between Lara and objects, such as being able to open drawers - none (of course there are some pushables and all that). Speaking of which, I have no idea what that pushing and pulling boxes by the attic was for, as I simply used the jump switch there and abandoned the task in the middle. Speaking of jump switches now, back in the caves, there's no need to push down the block to reach one, because it's perfectly reachable just by jumping next to where it is. The bike ride and the kayak ride were mostly pleasant. I enjoyed the overall design in some places, even though there was some feeling of emptiness throughout. I thought the blades in the garden were there just because. Sorry if I sound not as nice as previous reviewers, but that's how I felt. Still worth a try, it's a nice experiment with a large map and an ok design." - Jorge22 (03-Sep-2020)
"This starts off in a very luxurious version of Lara’s mansion, although whoever designed her maze was clearly psychotic as it’s jammed full of blade traps and rats the size of Shetland ponies! You can find a kayak in the second part, but you don’t need it and since it’s never been my favourite mode of transport I ignored it. I did rather enjoy the quad bike ride to get back to the mansion however. This is a quirky level, with large yellow question marks triggering arrows to point Lara in the right direction from time to time. Overall, I liked it and it certainly isn’t your average tedious mansion level, but I have to say if I had to work that hard just to leave home I’d probably be even more of a hermit than I already am!" - Jay (10-Aug-2020)
"There are a lot of things to love about these levels, so I'll start with the two things I didn't like and get them out of the way. In the first level alone, there are not one but three of my absolute least favorite Tomb Raider mechanic: TIMED RUNS. In fact, I very nearly gave up on the entire game because of the very first one, right near the beginning. And as others have noted, the spinning blades in the hedge maze are unforgiving, even more so when you have to go through them backwards. That being said, first and foremost, these levels are absolutely gorgeous. I'm always a sucker for pretty houses in games, and this vision of Croft Manor is more beautiful than that of any of TR1-3 or Legend. It has a similar mix of light and dark to Anniversary (my favorite official Croft Manor) and is beautifully textured indoors and out. I also appreciated all the nods to the various official Croft Manors: the hedge maze from TR2; the gate to the assault course from TR2&3; the treasure room for TR3, thankfully easier to open here but still sporting a T. rex trophy... In terms of gameplay, it feels appropriately Tomb Raidery (timed runs and spinning blades included) while still mostly fitting its setting. There were times when it stretched believability and I had to wonder why Lara had allowed wolves to roam under her home, but by the same token, one must wonder how ancient Egyptian temples came to have so much ammo for Lara's shotgun, so that's not a criticism of the level so much as the whole TR paradigm. This was a really wonderful Croft Manor level that strikes a great balance of exploring Lara's home and actually having a game to play. Thank you to the creator for making it!" - donna (04-Aug-2020)
"This is a pleasant little diversion that hasn't received much attention due to the contemporaneous BtB competition. It begins as a house level, with Lara wearing her guns and not much else, but it quickly evolves into a sprawling adventure that grabs the player and propels him along. There's a nice feature of the question marks that trigger yellow arrows that guide the player from task to task, coupled with a generous 14 secrets that provide nothing tangible other than the joy of finding them. The last one is quite an exercise, consisting of pushblock routines in two separate but adjacent areas. I used Doggett TV's video walks in playing the two connected levels, and since he saw no need to use the kayak I didn't either. I had a good time here, taking a break from playing the Tibet levels, and you probably will as well. Recommended." - Phil (30-Jul-2020)
"Now, here's a home level with its fair share of twists, turns and challenges. The environment actually extends far beyond Lara's humble abode, right into some impressive ruins located underneath, rife with rats and dogs. The areas end up taking a fair bit of exploration and a few of the jumpswitches are concealed away quite sneakily, but you also have the rather nifty and considerate addition of hint markers to point you in the right direction in case you get turned round. The puzzles throughout are pretty nicely constructed (particularly the shifting colour coded ledge puzzle and the pushblock puzzle in the attic), but what I found a bit aggravating were the blade traps in the garden maze, in that they were detrimental to Lara's health if you tried to pass from a certain direction. It's also a bit too dark in places (although the construction is generally solid otherwise) and the kayak seemed to be a superfluous gimmick as everything could be done just as easily on foot. Having said that, the secret "scavenger hunt" was really enjoyable, as were the tasks associated with them, and as a whole I enjoyed this intriguing raid a lot more than I expected." - Ryan (29-Jul-2020)
"Here we have hidden jumpswitches to find, blades to dodge, and mice to shoot. Let's be clear, this is not a typical level of Lara's home. It is a 2-part level with Lara's mansion sitting on top of some ruins and a sewer system to explore for four puzzle stars. I appreciated the hint markers which point you in the right direction, particularly because I usually dislike searching for jumpswitches. I was not a fan of the blades in the garden maze, their direction of rotation made backtracking quite difficult. The doors are inconsistent, some open when Lara steps in front of them and others do not. Not as bad as when the action key is involved, but can still lead to overlooked areas. The kayak ride and quad were nice additions, however I'm not sure what the goal posts in the water were for, and the quad cannot go in reverse so make sure not to drive it into a corner. For the more meticulous raider, the secrets will be quite engaging: there are some nice puzzles to solve to get those, which I won't spoil here. The inconsistent texture sizing and somewhat flat lighting could use more attention, but they don't hurt the immersion too much. Overall a nice little adventure that sits comfortably between a house level and a more traditional raid. 1 hour 42 minutes." - JesseG (03-Jul-2020)
"A great Home Level from Melvin, It was fun exploring Laras home, however I was not a huge fan of the ingame hint system it is very easy to trigger accidentally and you have to reload if you dont want them. When i first saw Winston my first though was to lock him in the freezer alas this is not possible. The kayak and Quadbike were fun to control and it was great finding all the candy bars for the secrets. 35/40" - JoeTheCrazyGamer (26-Jun-2020)
