Reviewer's comments |
"Two levels of prologue are way too long to prevent it from dragging, even with all variations of gameplay included. Then we get the core level and I feel like the entire ending level was missing since I got a glimpse of new asset but the game just ended. Also missing is the feeling of progression - again despite of various interactions I felt like the curve was flat linear instead of made of buildups, climaxes and changes of pace - still, the mask itself felt important enough. On one hand, maybe I played it on a wrong day. On another, I don't feel like replaying." - DJ Full (15-Nov-2023) |

"This is a visually very impressive reimagination of TR2 Golden Mask. Texturing, lighting,
the way of using colors and room geometry are all amazingly well-done. In the first two
levels, gameplay was repetitive at times including plenty of items to find and switches to
activate. Third level was more engaging gameplaywise, containing some cool puzzles and
platforming sections that gave a nice adrenaline rush. I particularly enjoyed the high
temperature rooms filled with liquid gold where you need to perform sets of jumps quickly
before you burn. Overall, it is a great custom game surely worth playing." - Samu (10-Oct-2023) |

"A adventure fun to play and immersive. Lighting and atmosphere are excellent and the display
of the hints on screen were quite appreciated, this works better than a diary imo.
Some of the new gameplay features were put to good use (icy water , burning heat) , and i a
bit surprised that the new move (jumping up to reach upper blocks) was not used more.
The skeletons you can kill were a good diversion from the guards. The second level was maybe
the one i like the less, there are some good traps (fire burners, hammers) but too maybe
warehouses to explore and these warehouses are filled with too many crates. The level plays
well, outside help is not much needed here. Excellent work." - eRIC (29-Dec-2022) |

"An amazing reimagining of TR2 Gold by PhryneCroft that's inspired by, but very different
than the original. While the score it has isn't bad, this set of levels deserves a much
higher rating than it has in my opinion, but sadly like so many other great TRLE's it just
didn't get quite the score it deserves. A must play, especially for fans of TR2 Gold that
want something similar but different." - Lorax (23-Feb-2022) |

"Apart from that close-up camera of Lara that pretty much distracted me and annoyed me
most of the time, this adventure was built very cleverly and the environment was just
too pleasing to look at. The lightning, textures, setting... everything was perfect. The
gameplay was very well balanced, it was interesting and intriguing, although the last
level was kinda boring in my opinion. The mortal skeletons were an excellent idea, and
the author was so generous with pickups. Nevertheless, this project was fun to play
through, definitely would recommend it if you want to focus on this level set for a
couple of days, maybe even less. BTW, I got 7/10 secrets, was very pleased with myself." - Rad (24-Jan-2021) |

"The game in my opinion started off a bit slow. But once you got past the first few obstacles, you get invested. I enjoyed the
mixture of close-quarter combat and bits of stealth. Another creative bit I really enjoyed was the mixture of different
official TR games (TR II, TR A, and TR L) being intertwined into one game. Being the music and a lot of the textures and the
theme of the last level. The platforming wasn't very difficult but requires some skill to do it right, especially in places where
added stress factors where incorporated. Even though the map got a lot larger towards the end of the game, it was still
clear what had to be done and the direction of travel. I enjoy that a lot. I suppose my only true gripe I have is her animation
when running. It bounces the camera and some people may get motion sick from it. And the swim animation was awkward
to me. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more levels from the author!" - g12STL (20-Jan-2021) |

"This year's Advent levels have proven to be a bumper crop, although most of them have
nothing to do with Christmas. Nevertheless, they have all provided top-flight entertainment,
and this three-part release ranks up there with the best of them. The environs are darker
than I prefer, but I never had any trouble seeing what was going on around me. Plenty of
flares are firepower are provided, so no complaints there. I agree with JesseG that the
second level had a bit too many warehouses that all seemed to look the same, but the
gameplay in these areas more than made up for that shortcoming. The third level in the
golden pool rooms was the most complex and action-packed of all, and it would have done just
fine as a stand-alone level. I spent much more time here than the rest of you, as I was
writing a walkthrough along the way (and undoubtedly missed some of the finer nuances), but
I consider it to have been time well spent. Recommended." - Phil (08-Jan-2021) |

"This is a truly immersing adventure, which
actually turns out to be quite head
scratching in places. Were it not for a
couple of minor irritations in the first
three categories (the last one is pretty
much faultless, as I will elaborate on
further down), I would have scored it with
four tens. But I shall deal with these
negatives first and then not dwell on them
any longer than necessary. The
backtracking in the second level got
rather wearying after a while and I am not
at all sure whether I grasped the logic of
the final crystal shooting puzzle. While
the hints may have been on the ceiling, I
still don't know whether they corresponded
to anything that I had missed while
travelling through earlier areas. I am
also still not a fan of Lara's latest
running animation as she seemed to move
rather sluggishly, although it didn't
impede her athletic ability too much.
Finally, the camera angle seemed a bit
disconcertingly close and when you drew
weapons it zoomed right in in a weird
manner, but again nothing game breaking.
Now onto the positives, of which there are
many. The visuals are absolutely
brilliant, there's no getting away from
it. The sceneries are striking, the
textures are immaculately placed, lighting
is just right and the builder gets the
usage of audio and cinematic flybys just
perfect, while the gameplay (aside from my
gripes above) is generally nicely flowing
and engaging. Providing you can overlook a
few minor niggles, there's some great
enjoyment to be had here." - Ryan (08-Jan-2021) |

"I really liked the first two levels (even the second, in which some claim it's all just
about finding keys and switches or so), even though they may have been somewhat puzzling
orientation wise. But the settings were great to look at, the entire atmosphere was
rather nice, and the way it unfolded was, in my view, quite good tomb raiding. The same
can't exactly be said about the third and final level, as I thought it was way too
convoluted (and a lot less nice to look at) and, to be perfectly honest, somewhat boring
at times. Yes, I thought the enemies were interesting (breakable and non-breakable
skeletons, for instance) and the temperature challenge, in spite of some lack of
orientation, quite well done. I thought this level set deserved a better ending, as it
was just sudden and that was that. All in all, it was pretty good, but not exactly my
cup of tea." - Jorge22 (06-Jan-2021) |

"I didn't like this set of levels as much as some. There was an over-reliance on linear
switch/key progression, but there was never a problem withwhat to do next. Secrets were
varied in their difficulty from easy to the need to break an unmarked window with the
shotgun and not the pistols. Timed-runs were not hard. Viewpoint camera was close
(interestingly the look key did the opposite of normal and zoomed out so you could get a
slightly better view) but I didn't think it impaired the ability to make jumps. Levels
varied somewhat in the degree of reality they portrayed. Although suddenly less realistic
the 3rd level had the best platforming of the 3 available levels. Sound was a little odd
with Lara being particularly heavy-footed. I felt the texturing was somewhat repetitive,
and whilst well fitted out a lot of rooms/areas had little to do in them which was a
missed opportunity in my book. Annoyingly the title load game page didn't allow you to load
all of the save games that the F6 screen did." - Adrian (28-Dec-2020) |

"There are very good things and very bad things in this game. The good part is the design: marvellous ambients and a beautiful atmosphere. I loved the insert of some steampunk objects. This author is very good in mixing styles. The gameplay is interesting enough, much focused on exploration. I didn't find anything difficult nor anything boring. The worst thing is the camera behind Lara. It's too close and really annoying. You can't even see her boots when she stands still. This is a problem when you have to perform certain jumps and it's also difficult to have a clear perception of the ambients with such a camera sticked to your back. But I don't want to lower my votes for this fact, I only hope PhryneCroft will reconsider this choice in the next game. Final thecnical note: The Load screen in the main menu and the one in-game are not syncronized because the first uses the traditional screen while the in-game Load/Save function uses the advanced screen with background Bitmap. This is annoying because only 15 slots are visible from the main menu, while actually you can save in more slots when you are in-game." - Teone (26-Dec-2020) |

"Another quite involved game in this year's advent calendar. This one impresses with top notch texturing and lighting with hardly anything to fault and some very impressively designed areas. Actually I would give full marks in the atmosphere section as well but two things downgraded it for me; one was that even long after some fights were over the action sound was still playing - in general sounds were well chosen though - and the other, major, thing is that annoying camera angle which negatively affected the gameplay experience because some jumps were pointlessly hard because of it (also because of some new moves). When you can trust on reliable mechanics like the classic TR ones, there is really not so much need of something fancy. Anyway. Gameplay is quite nicely flowing, with a lot of exploration and platforming to be done with a few smaller but rather easy puzzles and timed runs; the hardest timed run was the one to the final secret but only if you don't know the best route up. The first and especially the third level generally have more on offer than the slightly dull and tedious second one with one particularly nasty yo-yo-backtrack towards the end. There also were some smaller technical problems like the first text message not appearing where it should or flares not working in some places, but nothing serious. Despite the third level being my favourite, I must say that it ended somewhat sudden and unexpected after a total of 1:45 hours, with all ten nice secrets found. Recommended for some enjoyable progression in visually stunning sceneries." - manarch2 (22-Dec-2020) |

"I confess I'm a big fan of PhryneCroft levels since her first release and when I see the screens of this adventure in facebook I was looking forward to the game.
So when I see the adventure is available in the Adventcalendar of Levelbase I was like a kid in christmas morning.
Since the beggining to the end it was impossible to me to stop the adventure.
The three levels of the adventure are just beautiful with a great Golden Mask atmosphere.
The textures and marvelous and very well used.
The game is not very hard so even the beginners can play easily the adventure without real difficulties.
I also liked how the author recreate some of original aeras of Golden Mask but with a new gameplay and events.
Congratulations again for this adventure and I hope play another levels (or entire adventure) from PhryneCroft in a near future :-) !!" - Bigfoot (22-Dec-2020) |

"Very solid and wonderful level. I can describe it like TR2GOLD remake. There were many
familiar areas which we saw in orignal but they were much more improved. I very loved
the athmosphere of two first levels. It was like frozen night far into north, which I
loved. We exploring in first two levels many rusty and old russian buildings which makes
athmospere even more. Third level is setted in Furnace of the Gods style level. Also
very athmospheric with exploring many ancient ruins, nice blue rooms and rivers filded
with gold. Texturization was 10/10, very good. Overally it's amazing TR2GOLD remake that
I highly recommending :)" - BlackWolfTR (19-Dec-2020) |

"A truly phenomenal job, this author has captured the way Tomb Raider 2 gold felt and
looked and has expanded beyond to achieve a truly perfect result, there are 3 levels
(as I do assume the author wants to pass the ball to the Forest kingdom level of
AgentXP) I am gonna review them independently, lets get started ^w^
Fool's Gold (10 10 10 10): Arguably the best level in the trilogy
offered by the author, the level consist in some nice exploring and quite easy tasks
easily connected and fairly easy to remember, the secrets I was able to find were
quite good, the ammo was quite a lot and the enemies were quite a lot too, all of
them dropping some goodies all the time. The Atmosphere? Top notch, really, I
couldn't help but stop every few seconds to look at the sky because of how beautiful
the horizon looked like! Overall the best level in my opinion and the one that kept
me playing the most.
Old Factory (9 10 10 9): Likely my least favourite levels among the
three, while this level does manage to look great and quite hook me up playing, I
quite felt a step down in terms of overall atmosphere, while retaining that top notch
feel, the lighting was quite too dark in some areas and that kept me turning on
flares until, you guessed it, I ran out!! The gameplay is also a step down, ditching
the fairly straightforward gameplay with a bigger and more ambitious map, it worked
fine indeed but when it came to some tasks either I was unsure on what do to either I
would have found myself redoing and retravelling places sure I had forgotten
something.
Furnace of Gods (10 10 10 10): This should win a price of best-est
atmosphere I have ever seen in a game ever. The caves filled with gold would make me
will to stop and just look at the detailed ceiling, the blue caves would make me use
my binocular to look around. The secrets looked quite interesting but I was unable to
find more than one, which was quite a shame if you ask me. Enemies were less but for
the best as this level is quite focused on platforming and small enigmas. I did not
quite liked two puzzles of the level because I found them quite nonsense, but
I am gonna walk pass that because I was able to understand easily where to go and I
did not get really stuck as much as the previous level.
Conclusions: Likely the best LB Advent Calendar I have ever played, this one
surpasses Mr.XY's Tibetan Winter Remake, for how crazy it may sound. The flawed
second level is really nothing in comparison to really what this level has to offer
and I really look forward to try AgentXP's Forest Kingdom to get the continuing of
this game ^w^. Totally recommended, quintessential as Himalayan Mysteries truly is.

"My enjoyment of this levelset was a valley: the first and last level were great, but I was not a fan of the second level, which had more of a negative impact than a positive one. There were too many keyholes, too many similar warehouse rooms, too few camera cues and too much backtracking, even a single ladder has Lara going up and down it at least 6 times. My other critique concerns the camera, which is very close to Lara, so much so that sometimes her feet are not visible which makes it hard to perform jumps. The camera also jolts suddenly whenever Lara comes to a standstill, which can cause a headache after a while. Despite these issues I would still recommend this levelset as there are plenty of enjoyable moments: Nice puzzles involving shootable targets or pressure pads, combat against horsewomen, goons and skeletons, and traps including flames, spikes, circular blades, boulders, timed runs, running through damaging environments...there is a whole lot of engaging content here. And that is paired with immersive visuals, from the gloomy factory windows to the vibrant pools of gold, and the last level is the best in the way it employs a good balance of red, blue and yellow lighting between the various areas. While the middle level holds things back somewhat, it is otherwise an excellent adventure. 2 hours 36 minutes." - JesseG (19-Dec-2020) |

"I've finished this adventure right now and I was very satisfied. The architecture and texturization are very good, there were enough pickups and the enemies were well balanced; some secrets were very easy to find but not all of them; the atmosphere was convincent and the lighting is very well worked. Really an adventure to enjoy with an old TR2 taste. Highly recommended for all those nostalgig players. Good work, PhryneCroft! Congratulations and many thanks for your hard work! I hope you continue building in the future. Recommended adventure!" - Jose (18-Dec-2020) |
