Reviewer's comments
"Not a fan of home levels myself, but this one does have a few things going for it that are unique and hence make it worth a look. Mainly the surprise that the hedge maze has been replaced by a boat ride and the introduction of a few new moves that you get to practice in the gym. But aside from that, it is your usual "run around and press buttons and find keys"- experience that gets old pretty quickly and the looks are really rather too basic with very little care giving to texturing and even less to lighting." - MichaelP (14-Mar-2024)
"This manor has some approach I have seen only in this particular version, so I think it's quite underrated (I guess it's because of the visuals, huh...). Try it." - DJ Full (11-Nov-2023)
"It’s no secret I love mansion levels, so much so I made 3 of my own back in the day. I have to say this is one of my favourites, whether it’ was nostalgia or just a general like for this type of setting I thoroughly had a great time playing this level. It’s based on the tr 2 home level but so much better, I really liked finding all the secrets and learning Lara’s new moves in the gym, a lot of the gameplay is finding keys and buttons to open doors but don’t let that fool you! there is so much more to this level, trying to complete the The obstacle course in a specified time was challenging at least for me lol, the trip to the roof was a pleasant surprise as was the aquarium but the Venice style boat course area was just to die for, I was expecting another standard hedge maze behind the gate but this just blew me way, great balance with enemies as well for a house level, if your a mansion lover like me then please check this out I believe it deserves more credit" - John (07-Apr-2021)
"The environs in this house level are rather crude compared with other TR4 levels, but the gameplay is reasonably well laid out. The builder has provided his own walkthrough, which I found rather murky in spots, so I followed Doggett TV's video walk in which he does a few things out of their intended order. It's pretty dark in certain areas, but sufficient flares are provided. The boat ride (not timed) near the end was a refreshing change of pace. You also have the ability to lock Winston in one of the rooms to keep him from following you around. A pleasant enough raid that takes a half hour or so, but there's nothing really memorable here." - Phil (26-Jan-2021)
"This is okay as standard home levels go, but largely a remake, so really not too much to write home about else than that the Venician part is rather nicely included, despite some serious texture issues in the underwater hall. Secrets are easy to find but I still liked the hideout of the last one. Gameplaywise really not much else than what you'd expect, finding keys, using levers and pushing some boxes in the attic... as said, okay, but fairly unexciting. Finished in 20 minutes." - manarch2 (09-Jan-2021)
"At first glance, this is a classic mansion level, pretty much up to the point where you visit the aquarium, only to find it’s been modelled on the Maria Doria. I must admit that made me smile. Also, the erstwhile race track is now a rather fetching Venice themed speedboat ride, presumably to match the equally charming Venitian roof garden. A trip to the gym is also definitely enhanced by Lara’s new wall jump abilities. It’s a decent enough debut level and an imaginative attempt to put a fresh spin on an old (and frequently done to death) genre. A builder to watch, I feel." - Jay (07-Jan-2021)
"Another mansion level without nothing special, except the ride with the boat; there are some new features like the use of the harpoon gun with the sight but nothing really noticeable except the new moves to climb walls. The gameplay is similar to another mansion levels, explore, explore and explore looking for buttons and keys to open doors. The areas in the boat course, in the attic and in the basement are too dark, but at least I found enough flares. Nonetheless I think it's a good debut and this builder has a good potential to bring us better levels in the future. Looking forward for the next levels of this adventure. Cheer up mate!" - Jose (07-Jan-2021)
"This might be called a ‘re-imagining’ of TR2’s “Home Sweet Home” in which you get to meet a only a handful of baddies, and only at the very end (and even then, they’re not very forthcoming about doing battle); so to all intents and purposes it is just another home level, with all the shortcomings in the gameplay department that the concept usually entails.
The builder sought to enliven his hackneyed template in a number of ways, among them the introduction of two new moves, which are required, however, only a couple of times in the early part of the level. The animations look rather wadmergery, but the main thing is this: Lara’s range is far and wide enough as it is; as a builder, you really have to go out of your way to prevent her from reaching spots where you don’t want her to go. Mind that you’ve given a further boost to Lara’s range, and players will try those moves everywhere, not just where you want them to; this is bound to cause trouble, especially for a builder who seems to have overlooked the fact that half the gym is redundant, as you can reach both switches with simple jumps from the same ledge. There’s no need to ever touch the bridge or the monkeyswing.
Another change to the template, more successful in my opinion, is that—regardless of his storyline—the builder does not stick too ‘faithfully’ to the TR2 mansion. He has in fact created a TR2/3 hybrid, in which TR2’s dreaded hedge maze has been replaced by TR3’s quadbike course, but it’s been flooded, and you get to use the TR2 Venice motorboat there. The subterranean aquarium has been imported from TR3 as well. This works much to the level’s advantage, as does the novelty of shooting out a high-up window with the harpoon (of all weapons).
Less interesting are the standard tasks. Of course you have to do the assault course, but it isn’t timed (there is an on-screen timer, but it is of no consequence). The only task that is actually timed (run from attic to basement) is very forgiving. Much of the built-in back-and-forth remains, and you can never be sure that you haven’t missed something, or where you’re supposed to go next (you acquire the Roof Key very early, but you get to use it only near the end). The third act has some helpful camera clues, but generally speaking, the level (like any home level) would have benefited from more linearity.
Designwise, the builder successfully sought to imitate the TR2 look (TR3 in places), to the extent that I quite forgot that I was actually playing a TR4 level (Hey, wait a minute…there were no ropes in TR3!). Unfortunately, this means that in TR4 terms, the level looks quite bad. The texturing is atrocious, and lighting mainly makes itself felt in the form of murky darkness in some places (attic) and pitch-blackness in others (basement). Secrets (dragons) stand out among the otherwise low-res objects. Sound is fine, only a few samples are missing (like those for the push-down lever).
Finally I’d like to note that it’s a quite sizeable download for a simple home level, due to the many audio files in .WAV format (very few of which were actually used); and to the choice of ‘outfits’ that the builder thought the player should have (each requiring a separate .TR4 file). This is not a service I expect my level builder to provide.—P. S.: The level crashed on me whenever I tried to go to title screen (hence also when the game was finished), though I didn’t consider it a big deal when playing." - Mulf (04-Jan-2021)
"Overall i must admit i really did enjoy this level is always different too see a new areas in the croft manor like where the hedge maze and quadbike course would usually be you have a speedboat there instead and tbh its a lot of fun exploring it. There's also new areas in the actual manor itself and even the gym has had a redecorating which is really good as it just shows some new moves that have been added too this like the wall jump. this TRLE is one that I would definitely recommend especially if you are a huge fan of TR2. Found 3 out of 3 secrets with some nice rewards and really cant wait too see what is in store next for the legacy of Xian." - lokky99101 (28-Dec-2020)
"I decided to award Gameplay slightly higher marks than perhaps this level deserved, simply because the builder (in their debut,no less) tried so very hard to ring the changes on such an oft-used theme. All the elements that make up your average Mansion level are present and correct;but this time there are actual gameplay challenges that need to be undertaken (shooting a window with the help of a laser-sight;rope swinging;navigating a motor boat) in order to progress through the oh-so-familiar environments - and these are welcome additions (and,in the case of the aforementioned boat, quite unexpected). A few twists have been creatively added to the map;the progression is interesting (those wall jumps take a bit of practice);there is the hint of a developing storyline toward the end;and the level builds toward some sort of a proper Finale. I was entertained for an hour, and am looking forward to more from this new builder." - Orbit Dream (28-Dec-2020)
"I must really admit that I started up this game with the lowest of expectations, having played the recently quite terrible entry from another author that was set in the same house, I was afraid I was gonna get such an experience twice. Luckily for me, that was not the case, at all!
Legacy of Xian is a sweetly ambitious game that serves as a nice distraction and a quite unique homage to tomb raider 2 (that to those who don't know is my faved game), while providing some quite meh texturing during most of the game with visible repetition, odd mixing of old and HD textures, oddly stretched for no absolute reasons, other parts of the level do provide some good texturing that quite save the boat, not gonna lie. The atmosphere is what caught me the most, maybe it is the fact I grew up to tomb raider 2 that I felt such a nostalgia, but I also really adored the Easter Eggs put inside of the custom, the "Tomb Raider 3-like" boat ride (instead of the quad ride) is a truly remarkable one, not to mention the unreachable medipack (reachable with corner bug tho) and the roof being now partly modified to put a secret in there, it is stuff like this that does elevate the level and that truly made my expectations grow!
The game was of course enemyless but it still had all the objects we needed for a tomb raider 2 feel, I gave praise to the golden secret but I have to, at the same time, point out that it is required to use a bug to reach it so it does make it a secret reachable only to those who know how to reach it. Overall the object putting was pretty standard, I really don't have anything against of that, so I am still gonna put an 8 there.
The gameplay? Heh, is quite the weakest in the bunch of course, while I do praise the little differences that made this a different Lara's Home, the game still implies running around Lara's manor looking for stuff and sometimes fighting stuff.
Beyond this the level is still worth mentioning and trying out, because it really, really is a pretty ambitious entry and tries its best to be as similar and revolutionary as it can, BigMedPack is quite on the right track! My advice is to keep on with this, because they have proved to be quite creative with this entry, so I do really look forward to see what they have in mind next ^w^. I do quite recommend this, especially to tomb raider 2 lovers, they'll be pleased! Wolfy Regards :3" - Wolf7 (27-Dec-2020)
"First things first. For a debut offering, this is a decent enough effort. It's just a shame that it doesn't go far enough to deviate sufficiently from the gameplay format of Lara's classic mansion and as a result, you have a general feeling of "been there, done that". The new wall jump manoeuvres (unusual indeed in a TR2-styled environment) are nicely put to use within the gameplay, although they did take a fair bit of practice to execute correctly. The secret quest was an enjoyable addition, the object placement was decent enough, but I did find the texturing rather crude in places (although the builder presumably wanted to emulate the original TR2 game so I won't complain too much). Aside from searching for a bunch of keys and battling the occasional bunch of enemies, there's not a whole lot to elaborate on here. As a scene setter for a possible full length adventure, it works OK enough, I suppose." - Ryan (26-Dec-2020)
